Well,, we have 39 days to go before our season starts up again.
Who is ready now ? Who has work left to be done ?
Myself, I can't wait to get back to the track and see everyone and all the cars and bikes... my sad news is that it is looking less and less likely that the Stude will be ready for the April event,,, I surely underestimated how much time and $$$$ this project would take... I also don't want to do any thing half AST... so I am about to face the reality that the Stude will not make it out to play until June...
Charles
-
Bah, lots still left to do and so little time!
-
All I have left to do is finish the cage mount the seat mount and plumb fire system finish installing the engine ,trans, all the pluming, wiring, break in the engine. Set up the new enclosed trailer. Order fire suit, window net, helmet. Get my lic. Not much left :-o.
39 day wow better stop typing and get back at it.
-
57,
I am ahead of you,,, I already have my fire suit and helmet,,, LOL..
Good luck,,,
Charles
-
My machine work is complete and the head should be back at the local shop any day now. Then the engine gets assembled and I take the bike in for the engine swap. I think I am ok on schedule at this point.
-
Now for some bad news -- I'm back and I wrote down my password this time.
-
I broke my trans on Saturday . A new trans was in the mail on Monday .I got a trans for 100 dollars from a newer bike. Should be ready to tune on the 1/4 mile track next weekend.
-
Crap. It's already March.
-
Yet again I won't be able to finally get out there in April. I have to be in Raleigh for the 30th's redeployment ceremony... :x
-
I guess we're lucky to have over 60 days to get ready, because we're gonna need it.
-
New timing wheel to install, redo AEM setup, re-tune, Dyno, change all the fluids, install automatic Fuel pump cutoff, go thru ALL of the Stuff for the Trip, trailer etc... It better warm up this weekend......
-
So far behind, so not ready... but that's just me personally! hahaha
It's March & I haven't even made the appointment to get my taxes done let alone being anywhere close to done with my books to have our taxes done. Ick!
Luckily the team is on track!
:-D
See ya real soon!
-
38 days !!!
The Firecracker still needs the dash, instruments and roll cage ...
:-o

Charles (a/k/a Cajun Kid):
Your recent post about underestimating the time and dollars required for a project -- gives definitive proof of the line we tell most newcomers about planning: Figure the cost, double it, then add 100% or so. Ditto for the time required.
And after you're part way through the build -- start allowing lots more money and time. Not that I'm hasslin' you, Charles -- just pointing out the basic truth of land speed racing. We sure do look forward to seeing the Stude (and the Vicky) at Maxton.

You left out the part where you add even more time and even more money!
Or you pack up your stuff and go run in Texas where they require very little in the way of safety equipment.
-
How many fatalities has there been at Maxton?? I know of two MC riders killed there in the last three years. I have been going to The Texas mile for four years and no fatalities.
-
My response was about required safety equipment, there is no comparison on as far as what is required to run at the events. And I am not complaining about it, I appreciate the intent of the rules. But I know full well 90% of the cars I have seen run at Texas would not pass tech to run 200+ at Maxton.
-
im ready......my bike isnt!
may just come down and say hello!
RUNT
-
Fred and John, this topic was about Who is Ready for Maxton ?
Not about past accidents at any venue,,, let's not Piss on any LSR Venue PLEASE. We all need to get along and promote LSR and each event. Bonneville, El Mirage, Texas, Maxton, Loring,,, Miami (if they sanction), and events accross the big ponds as well,,, If I left any LSR venues out,, please add them to the list...
Not trying to police the forum,,, just keeping the peace !!!

Jon (aka SSS),
I have done many build and understand the time and money Formula,,,, Heck we Built the Vicky from scratch in 7 months and came in only 4 weeks past the target completion date and a few Thousand bucks over budget.
I am very structured and detailed,, But MAN did I screw up on the Difficulty, Time and Money needed for the Stude,,,
From the inception the goal for the Stude was to tech to run at least 225mph,,, it takes a lot more work to Tech to 225 than it did for the Vicky teching to 175...... everything has to be built bigger, better and stronger and lot's of stuff is custom or "one off".. heck have you every tried to order a full containment racing seat for a 6ft tall 375lb driver ?? It sure don't come off the shelf...or cheap...
I am not complaining,, it is a labor of love,,,some tell me that I am to picky, some say I should not pay so much attention to the fit, finish or overall appearance,, and some even say it's a waste of time and money to have a nice paint job..
But, If my name is on the car,,, it is going to look like a car show trophy winner, it's going to be safe and it's going to go FAST.... I am very cautious NOT to say it's going to get a record.. As I know the records are well earned and hard to get,,, all I can say is I am going to try.... But I want my cars to look fast sitting still...just in case they can't get out of there own way at the track..
Charles

Charles you aren't the only one, but your rides make the whole track look better.

Terry,
Thanks man,,, see you in April.
Charles
-
Keith Turk once told me ... "to get over 200 mph in Land Speed Racing takes more horsepower than you think and more money than you have".
:-D
-
Great quote!
-
Steve,
Thanks for relaying Turk's quote,,, he is right on...
I have enough HP to go over 200 with my bigger motors,,,, But getting over 200 with a small NA "E" motor is the challenge,,,
The elusive 200 Club is even harder than going 200.... ya gotta get a record too !!! That's the tuff part.
See ya in April....
Charles
-
Bike is in pieces still! Won't be ready for the April run but I will take time to come down and meet everyone / learn the routine. I wouldn't mind getting my bearings straight and learning the ropes before I lug down the ole BSA and make a fool of myself.
I'm coming from Greensboro NC if anyone wants to car pool or meet up!
-
Hoping to tune at Twin Jugs in Fredericksburg, VA next week, if all goes well I will be ready for action in April. Can hardly wait, it's going to be an exciting year I think :-D -Dean
-
holdfastgreg,
I've go a Brit bike too and hold the fool record. That record will be harder to capture than a "2" club hat!

We're ready for you! Agreed on the exciting year!

New trans is in and engine is assembled . The dyno broke in the pistons some .The compression is up slightly in both cylinders  . New jets and ignition map done all new fuel lines and the body is on.
I sat down and looked at the bike and could not think of anything to do for now. Next step is to run a 1/4 mile and feel out the new seating position . (I can shift now without moving my whole body).
-
New engine parts have been shipped and should start going in at the end of next week, hoping to have everything ready so I can head down to Dupreeville in Florida to install near new 18K generator (890hrs) for the bus as my old one bit the dust in Tombstone, AZ, do all of this before coming back up to Maxton. Entry already mailed in.
See Ya there!!
-
Eric, Is that new body work on the 250 or a whole new bike? Dale Earnhardt once said that science had proven that air flows faster over black!
-
Todd tells me that my old nitrous bike, known as "The Icebreaker" thanks to the paint job, may be ready for the April event - if only for a couple of test and tune runs. This'll be fun. I haven't been on that bike since I blew a rod out the side of the case back in '06. Even if I just run on motor -- it'll be the first time the new motor complete with the billet stroker crank will run for more than a minute or two. See you there!
-

Same bike but everything is different. It has been a long winter
-
Same bike but everything is different.
LOL !!
:-D

200 club takes setting a record----don't forget those pesky "minimums" as I set a record our first year at 209.9--- 17 mph over existing, yet minimum was 210,.!!! Went back out with new clutch and went 219!!!!!
-
No minimums at the ECTA, Just make a new record at/over 200! ;)
-
JUST at/over 200? This from a woman who went 212+ through the traps and hit the ground at what 125 or so? You so rule Deb!
-
JUST at/over 200? This from a woman who went 212+ through the traps and hit the ground at what 125 or so? You so rule Deb!
Well yeah but that still wasn't good enough for a hat (or a license! :-P )
But I was the fastest Woman on 2 wheels until they cleaned up my mess! :-D
ahhhh yes... good times!
-
Deb is absolutely correct .. the ECTA has no minimum speed requirements for the 200 MPH Club, all you have to do is set a new record at/over 200.
Easy (not!)
FYI - I think it is the Lakes that has minimum speed requirements.
-
The Bonneville 200 MPH Club has established minimum record speeds required for entry into the Club. They're different for the various classes, and of course -- if there's an established record the "minimum" is to break said record.
I'm not sure about the EM club.
-
I've seen the t-shirts, but how do you get into the 200 lb. club?
-
Eat a lot of donuts!!!
John
-
The important part to ALL the above re: 200 mph club is - "set a NEW record"!!!!
-
30 days, including travel day. We got 14 items left on the punch list. I am totally jazzed about getting there. Had dinner with some folks last night and talked about the event. They race dirt track....eyes glazed over in arout 1 minute. Realized it is something you can only experience, not describe.
-
Got the new window net in today - got to mount the lower mount bar and she's ready to go!
-
Got to mount the ...... and she's ready to go!
That's what they all say !!
:-D
-
The important part to ALL the above re: 200 mph club is - "set a NEW record"!!!!
Not sure of which organization you are talking about but for SCTA that is not true. To set a record you only have to average 0.001 mph greater than the existing record. You can get a record but not entrance to the 200 Club. For the 200 club, some of those records have to be exceeded by 10, 20 or greater MPH. The exact amount varies by class. Those minimums are not capricious but are based on careful evaluation of existing records in similar classes.
-
Saltfever, I think IB was saying you can't get in a 2 club unless you set a record.... True in all of them as far as I know. While the Bonneville 2 club has minimums, it has nothing to do with the scta. And any 2 club record that is exceeded will get you in the club at Bonneville.
-
Wife says I've got 14 more punches left on her item list. Maybe the eyes glazed over is one of those "If I have to explain it...." things.
-
It has been a long and painful winter. Electrical Gremlins have run wild. The good news is I think they have all been chased away. We will know soon. Opening the 26-28th at Texas. If it stays together we will see you in April. We are also breaking in a ZX-10. Bone stock at this point, but hope to start building soon.
-
Well it seems I will not make it in April. We were testing in Florida and had a serious oiling problem. The 636 has to be torn down again. Looks like May for us. Hopefully that will be the 636 and the new 10. Hope April is a blast for everyone.
-
I am going to miss seeing you .Good luck with the engine .Like Burt Munro said ."When it all goes to bits. You just dive in and make it better."
-
Thought I was Ready, well I was, but my Wideband o2 died on the Dyno, found a small oil leak also, has to stop testing, was grinding the tires off, couldn't tie the truck down had enough to keep it from slipping. Guess I have to depend on the Concrete dyno for numbers. :-D
-
Mike,
I agree,,, the real test is on the track... see you in a few weeks.
Charles
-
Went by the shop yesterday and they still haven't put the the new/used/built motor together to do the swap but at least the bike is mear the bench! I told them if they don't finish it in time I will just have to chose something else from the floor to run, like Ali's 12 for example! 8-)
They seem pretty confident it will be ready next week though.
-
Car doesn't run yet. It should be all done this weekend though. See you all there.
-
Bike was on the bench but the motor wasn't assembled and swapped yet. Down to about a week so I may be in trouble if the new/used/rebuilt motor doesn't run and they have to put the original back in but I don't expect that too happen.
-
I am ready.
The bike went 14.4 sec in the 1/4 mile last weekend. That is the worlds Quickest 250 ninja pass ever. :-D
Now I have the bike set up for the mile. Just need to get my stuff sorted and packed.
-
10 days to go ...
:-D
-
Got the final oil fitting and dry sump belt for car #2 yesterday. Got to dyno it tomorrow and it should be ready to roll.
-
Really getting down to the short strokes... New Tiedowns for the Trailer and I'm finally going to work on making the Tach right.
-
Have fun without me guys. I won't be making it this year!
May come down and Help Joe T. if he needs it but no racing.
-
Got the final oil fitting and dry sump belt for car #2 yesterday. Got to dyno it tomorrow and it should be ready to roll.
You think it will be ready to make a pull tomm?? There is still a good bit to button up before we can fire it. I am going to start working on it after lunch.
-
Is anyone planning on going for one of the Hot Rod Magazine Top Speed Challenge jackets in Super Street or Street classes this meet ?

My Vicky is street legal.. It has license tags and insurance... I can put the headlights back on....
would I be able to run super street ?
Charles

.
-
Charles-
Look at what the past winners have run. Why let others have all the fun? Slap on what the rules call for an "come on down"!!!
I'd give up (some) body parts the get my car in HotRod. (Hummm , maybe not)

I will consider Super Street,,,, not sure if they go by Enigne class too ?
My lil pump gas moter in my areo brick may not be able to compete with them faster super street big blocks etc...

Bill,
As you know in ECTA you are able to run up in engine classes for cars and bikes.
Congrats on your awesome runs last week!!
Good luck at Maxton..

I know, but I wanted to know if Stan was throwing stones from his glass scta house.
Thanks John and good to hear from you. Havn't seen you on thr boards lately.
Bill

Yeah. But at least I was standing outside.

Yeah. But at least I was standing outside.
I think the point is that if I or some one throws it back, it either hits you or the glass house behind you.

you've been around here long to know that 90% of what Stan says is sarcastictly funny or not. :-D

The glass house behind us is actually a greenhouse where we grow decorative plants for our ivory tower.

we have to excuse Stan sometimes,,, He is a nice and knowlegable guy,,, but has a hint of Smart arse in his replies,,, I think it becasue he has lived in the Peoples Republic of KaliforniA to long

Hey Bill, Are you back in business and ready to run next weekend? Slap me with a slab of Mahi Mahi if you already declared your race status earlier as i didn't spot it!
Stopped by RNR today to check on my bike and found they needed to order valve seals yesterday but they still think we are ok and on schedule! :-o
Ali told me he is out for this event. Bummer as they have been working hard on the 250 but at least I can be reasonably sure they aren't working on his versus mine! :|
See everyone in a week regardless!
-
Bill, isn't this event some kind of anniversary?
-
Yes I am.
Laid low for the winter
Started early and still don't have everything done
Bike is loaded in the trailer and just about ready for next weekend ("it is what it is")
Hide the women, cause I'm coming naked baby 8-)
Pray for good Maxton weather when you're in church Easter Sunday.
Bill
-
Bill, isn't this event some kind of anniversary?
Not that know of. If it is, please tell.
Bill

Bill, with all due respect -- I don't think any of us will need to hide the women if you are there naked. Maybe hide our giggling, though. . .

Tom,
I am not sure about his engine size or his gearing,,
But if he could run up in motor class and was geared loe enough to get up to speed quick,,
I would imagine 3 to 5 records "may" be within his reach.. assuming he can drive on paved surface

Yeah, it looks good for racing this weekend -- but the "isolated thunderstorms" for Friday might make for a miserable day of setup and inspectifying. We'll see you at the track -- maybe even Thursday afternoon, Charles.
-
SSS,
I would rather have an "Iff'y" Friday for Teck and setup if it means a great Sat and Sun...?
Yep call me on Thurs and we will figure out things from there.

Car and tools are loaded.

I think I got all the little details finished on the bike. Just had a couple of 1st and 2nd gear runs on the street in front of the house; it seems OK. Hopefully I can use the Maxton Dyno to make the necessary adjustments and get up to speed this weekend. I will load the trailer tomorrow and Wed. and leave Thurs. morning

My Honda CRSF250 is ready except for still putting on some graphics on the new paint. It has a new fiberglass seat/tail combo I designed and built over the winter. Of course as we all know when you change one thing it affects many others. Thus the exhaust would not clear so I made a whole new one. That changed all the jetting. But now it seems happy at least running on the country lane in front of my farm in Maryland. But it sure isn't quiet.
Not sure my 1954 Parilla 175 will get sorted out in time. Still has shifting issues as well as a new larger carb to adjust and jet. It is a massive 24mm Dell'Orto unit.. Try putting that on a Busa. But the new clubman bars, tires, and exhaust pipe are ready.
And then there is that thing called work which seems to cause my alarm to go off every morning when it's still dark. Really gets in the way. So do the lamb deliveries that just started over the weekend with 2 sets of triplets. But they make me smile just as much as the sound and feel of my bikes accelerating. And both items need feeding...
-
At least your alarm is nice and goes off - so it won't awaken you. Just think how much your sleep would be disturbed if the alarm went ON.
-
SSS,
Don't quit your day job !!!!

Car and tools are loaded.
Andrew, glad to see you are coming on down. last time we talked, I was not sure if you would make it.
See you this weekend,

Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend. Stay safe on the highways, remember...there are CRAZY people on the public roads and they have no problem trying to prevent you from getting to the track on time!! Have a wonderful time while you're there and have a safe journey home!!
Stay safe...Go fast....Stay upright!

Just came in from the shop. Vicky has had all her vital fluids changed, the valves adjusted, the lugs checked, the suspension checked, tires checked and air pressures checked. All nuts and bolts checked and rechecked. Fire system checked, seat and seat belts checked, door net re installed and checked.
Packing list for gear and trailer printed out, will lay everything out on Wednesday and pack truck and trailer and load car on Thursday.
So just about ready... hmm better check my lists again,,,, I did forget to send my money for the banquet.. so I guess I will miss the festivities Sat night. So I have to put that on my Checklist for next year.

Well, I am glad the forecast looks great so I won't get to hot and bothered volunteering. The intake cam from Mega isn't going to work with the fancy three stage head job from Fast by Gast and I don't believe it will run well enough with the stock intake cam to be worth the expense of assembling and swapping the motor with the original still on the bike. I also don't see much point in running the original motor assuming it is still intact on the bike though I could probably get the lightened flywheel on there in time for some change. I wasn't home to get the call so I will see in the morning.
I have an appointment to fix the rv generator next Monday down there, otherwise I would probably stay home and get drunk and save the money it will take to get a working combination in time for some later event. Fast by Gast had the cam specs so it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Megacycle did warn about piston/valve clearance with the cam but I am not sure what their solution is. Maybe I can turn the spare motor into a sculpture and sell it! Don't worry, I'll cheer up once I hear, smell and see something running this season!
-
Milt,
"stay home and get drunk"? You are home at Maxton.

My first trip to Maxton was the Oct 09 meet and I got bitten hard by the GoFast bug...So, I'm really ready for this weekends meet...My question is, whats the odds of being able to get all the way into the pits ...Seems like theres gonna be a HUGE crowd and the possibility of having to park along one of the local roads & hike in... That ever happen?
My old age knees don't let me walk for as far as I used to ( go figure...)....The Oct 09 meet wasn't crowded & I drove all the way in & parked ...did take my bicycle and was just the ticket for getting around...
Thanks,
Stan
-
Ed Brace and I will be leaving with the 260 modified roadster tomorrow morning.
-
There should be no problem getting into the pits at all.
Mike

This 'looks' to be the best weather I've seen in April at Maxton!!
-
Hey Cajun, You can use my Banquet ticket if you want. I am staying in Lumberton so it is a bit of a hassle heading back afterwards. I gave a few thoughts to making some T/O passes with the truck but will save my money for the bike work and will be volunteering. Better now than in the 90+ weather in June!

Milt, thannks for the offer,,, Donna has my ticket at the Trailer.
See you this weekend.

Turbo26t/Stan--you can drive anywhere but to the staging lanes, but there is parking AT the start line/staging lanes, pit area and even some room down at short shut down if you want some pictures there. Hope we do have a big crowd but there's lots of space.
-
There will again be a large group of Bluebird folks down on the return road at short shutoff to show you what has been announced by the tower as your speed on the chalkboard;

Please stop by and join us, we have a campfire every night that the weather permits, so that looks like Friday, Saturday and maybe Sunday if the track allows us to stay over night before we head for Myrtle Beach as a group. If you want to take a tour of the buses, just ask we like to show off our 'Birds as we call them.
-
Glad to hear the "Birds" are migrating back again !
:-D
2 days to go ...

.
-
Why are you shouting at us?
-
Yeah, I got my hearing aids on. :-D
-
Well it looks like the weather will be good. Maybe a tailwind Sunday. Beat of luck to all. Fast and safe passes. We hope to see you all in May. The engine on the 6 is coming along after the failure. The 10 should also be ready for May. Post some speeds. Wish we could be there.

All of us west coasters still have a few weeks to go for the Lakes meet. We all wish you East coasters a fast and safe week end. Looks like you will have great weather.

Hi, my name is Christy Jeffers and I am coming to Maxton for my first time to spectate and get some rule clarifications, I was wondering if you can bring a golf cart or atv to cut down on some of the walking over the two days? I am already hooked and I haven't even been to an event.
-
Scott --
You're right -- shouting is all caps, yelling is bold face.
Stan
(Bold face caps is when you think what you're saying is very, very important.)
-
Snicker..snicker.. :-D
-
Sprintcj / Christy, yes some folks have golf carts, some lilttle scooters and some 4 wheel atv's.... Just keep the speed to 10mph around the pits and people... and I think 20 to 25 on the return road.
Stop on by our pits and say hello... Big Red Chevy Dually with white encolsed trailer..
Venable Ronds and Racing on the Sides of trailer..
Welcome to the Addiction.

Today was a busy day, some work on the Stude this morning, then loading the car and gear in the trailer.
I had a nice 90 minute or so break this afternoon,,, Jon and Nancy stopped by my house/shops for nice break and tour. We had a pleasurable visit,,, Both Jon and Nancy gave me some good insight into Bonneville and what to expect. We shared stories and just had a relaxing visit,,, they needed a break from driving and I needed a break for work !!!!
See you all around 12:00 to 1:00 tomorrow.

I'm AWOL/over the hill this trip but the 260 is headed your way. I gave 'em instructions on finding Mac's for the liver mush :-D
Everybody
Hope you all have a good meet and banquet, stay safe, have fun, and go fast.
Hope to get back in the groove and be down in Oct.
Take care,
Ed

RR / Ed,
Sorry you will not be at Maxton with the 260 Crew,,,
I will make sure me and Robbie (and his Mopar crew) let the Brace crew know where Mac's is,,,
Ed, can't believe your missing this great weather...
Take care,
Charles

All I can say to the Maxton event is;
HAVE FUN.
Also, go find Todd and Deb and sign the foto "What would Dave do"?
It will serve a great purpose, so if you are an East Coaster and had any respect for Dave Owen, sign that foto.
I've only experienced Bonneville and the Lakes so I have no first hand knowledge of Maxton,
but racers are racers, wherever they are.
It is my privilege to extend the most sincere wishes for great, fast, safe results for your first meet of the year.
