Thank God we are not running at El Mirage this weekend. Right now the temp is 33 F. with a wind chill of
22 F. The wind is at 19mph with gusts up to 40mph. So far only 0.08" of rain. Or should I say snow at this temp.
Tom G.
-
Waitaminute, Tom. Sounds like big horsepower, no dust and what direction is the wind blowing? Starting to load up the car, meet you there this weekend!
Stan
-
It was Elmo horsepower but might be a little muddy

Yes we have a very wet lake out here.Hard rain for about 3 hrs.I will get pictures soon.
-
Awesome news ! ! !
-
At 1:00 PM Pacific Standard time, a huge cell was producing heavy rains directly over El Mirage. Even more impressive was the size of the cell producing heavy rain in and around the adjacent mountains.
-
There should be a new update on the link above at 2:17. They Got .20 recently but the cell is a big one and we should find out how big in an hour.
-
So I'll ask the question of the rest of you -- who else, besides me, appreciates the SCTA "stationing" Tiny and his girlfriend at EM and making sure he's on the internet - so we can the nice up-to-date reports we're getting?
Thanks, Tiny.
-
Yes it is raining at present time here on SCTA property I put up rain gauge and will let you know how much.Tiny at wet El mirage :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
Hey Jon not girlfriend wife of 38 years :-D :-D  :-D :-D
-
Well, I hope to heck she's your girlfriend too, in that case!
-
that was just the pre-game show today. hail, lightning, tornado alert, roads and bridges closed. long beach has cars parked on the street up to their hoods in water. i smashed my finger and my wife drove through the worse of it to take me in for stitches. freeways were flooded in areas.
the 'big one' is on the way...
-
Pat, sorry to hear about the finger Glad the Banquet isn't this weeekend :-o
-

Here's a photo of the lakebed. I got this this morning - guess Tiny can't easily post photos from the Blackberry to this Forum. Anyway --
-
Might get a bunch more today.
-
It has been raining & windy out here for at least 2 hr's. Jon I will figure it out soon just takes an old long time.

-
It is alake & getting deeper :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
Happy happy joy joy :-D
-
No big hu-huu, Tiny. You take the photos and either post them yourselves - or send 'em here and I'll get them on display.
-
Looks like will be running the 222 in May. We wouldn't be running again until it got flooded good.
Now we can worry about drying out :-D
JL222
-
Let's hope the BLM keeps the gates closed to the lakebed until it is completely dry. Last thing we need is huge 4 wheel drive trenches across the lake bed.
Tom G.

Is the lake bed completely filled, like up by the main entrance?
I wonder if the the BLM takes depth measurements? Tiny get your canoe and tape measure :-D
JL222
-
how about a picture.
-
I wonder if the the BLM takes depth measurements? Tiny get your canoe and tape measure
Canoe! That's a good one. As long as it has a one inch draft you should do just fine. I don't think more than two inches at the deepest point.

Wanna bet? :-D
JL222

I would bet it's at least one foot in the center of the lake bed and it goes shore to shore.
-
I KNEW I could get a response out of somebody! Didn't take a tape measure either.
-
Guess we will have to ask Calloway.
-
Guess we will have to ask Calloway.
Just spent some time on Google Earth checking on the El Mirage Dry Lake. G E shows an area that is shaped like an arrow head pointing South East. The long dimension is approx 4.7 mi long. The widest dimension is approx 1.5 mi wide. This whole area is shown as being at 2838 ft elevation. SCTA property is at 2848 ft elevation. Sheep creek starts in the San Gabriel Mt and drain's North to El Mirage. I don't know how much rain from the mountains gets all the way to the lake. Depending on how much time it takes the water to percolate into the ground. It would take a lot more rain and snow melt to get a foot of water on the lake bed. I suspect the surrounding area would not drain much into the lake until there has been enough rain to saturate the sand and cause runoff.
-
There is a lot of water. No way to know how much without causing a mess of the smooth lake bed.Wind moved water around today and pete flew cover in gyro said it looks good.
-
Tiny, you need to get your own gyro so you can fly around with pete. Doesnt that sound like fun? :|
-
Mike,
Here is what Tiny needs. He could check everything out pretty fast with this. And it would be fun too.
Tom G.
-
Watch it Tom. Anything with a prop is liable to cause trouble. :-o :-o
Pete
-
Pete,
ROTFLMAO, I thought it would be OK since it is a boat.
Tom G.
-
There is no gyro big enough to haul me around. That airboat looks great. :-o  :-D :-D
-
George Calloway sent me a note and said the wind is moving the water around the lake bed. This is good. Chance of more rain in the next couple of days.
-
Wind moved water toward the East yesterday and now has moved it back to this end
-
That's is exactly how the surface cures itself. We need it to move and dry; then do it again........
-
El Mirage is getting some rain today as well, so far about .36. So my question is how much is too much? Should we start praying for sun and wind in the desert? :?
-
We bought some paddle tires for the two-day May meet.
-
Well, I'm doing my part to assist global warming ...
Tech question: If you put 2 wheels on a Yamaha jetski, would it be "naked" class or partially streamlined?

With the water we have got, how well do you think the coarse will hold up in May each day?
-
Depends on how slow it dries.
Tom G.
-
How many car on avg start in the rookie line?
-
In one weekend I remember we had 23 rookies and had run out of log books...sometimes only 5 or so..
John
-
Not much rain today. How bout some sun and a little wind.
-
Hold a AA license on the salt But will start all over at El Mirage,Just tring to see if it might be posible to get a second run on the first day of the May meet.Don't get me wrong I have no problem making a 150mph run or less. Just tring to come up with a game plan.

I believe the first top 25 run first then the 200mph line and rookie lines get to rotate in. Everyone gets at least one run in, before anyone gets two. If the course is great and the wind is your friend, you may get two runs in a day.

Just a note from my rookie experience in November.
I waited until my number came up and got into the rookie line. Once I was in the line I was told I could make a run and get right back in the rookie line right away for another run. I was only able to stay for Saturday but was able to make two runs and could have probably have made three if I have wanted to.
Everyone was great and John N. was a big help.
Nothing but positive things to say about the SCTA and the volunteers who run the meets!!!
Good luck and have a great experience,
Buzz
-
A friend of mine flew out from N.C to ride my Norton at the May meet in 2008. He rode out of the rookie line and got four runs in the two days. Had we pushed it we could have got a fifth run in.
-
Its been a long time simce I was a rookie, thanks for letting me know how it really works. My mistake. :-P
-
How many car on avg start in the rookie line?
From my observations, the May meet the last few years seemed to attract the most Rookie Drivers/Riders of any meet, except for maybe the November meet. They don't start taking people from the rookie line until after the first 25 numbered cars have run, then the starter will take them at random and let them make a pass. You can get back in line, but will not be able to make a next pass until all cars have made their first run. I have seen two day meets called the first day just after a couple hours of running due to wind, then the next day run all day long, and vise versa.
Just remember you are dealing with Mother Nature, and if you are luck you might get 4 runs, and if she is cranky you might not get any. It is the desert and the weather can change in a heartbeat.

From the Mayor (George Callaway) this morning:
The wind is doing its JOB, over the weekend, the wind blew out of the west & the "standing" water was moved completely out of sight (to the east). This morning, I have "Lake front property" again. We had gotten little or NO rain out of these last storms. As long as it stays cool, there will be less loss. The water seems to be all down on the west end, sure hope the BLM is/are doing their job & keeping the people off the dry spots on the east end.
-
The BLM & Hi Desert Racers are doing a great job.Have not seen anyone at this end on lakebed. It is looking good out there.
-
Been out of town for the last week,Thanks for the info.It has been 20 years sence I have been out there.I remember what it was like then but I know things change.I am looking forward to getting back on the dirt. One think I know is about rolling the dice with the weather you never know.
Thanks

Tiny at SCTA property El Mirage

Got a note from George Calloway regarding the lake bed. There is still some water in one area. The lake is still closed until this week end. That of course depends on more rain. Geo said it looks good in general but a little more rain will help with the cure. It's getting close to the first meet. George and Tiny will keep us posted.

Here's an email I got from Callaway this morning:
Greetings, We did get some rain (not much), I am seeing standing water along the south shoreline. As soon as the BLM Vistor Center is Open, I 'll call down & recommend that the lake be closed. We are still having strong COLD winds out of the west. They are having "The El Mirage Clean-Up" May 1st. George
-
any one that can ought to make it to elmo for the clean up day.... since we are the major user of the lake bed we should be the major players in keeping it clean...
Kent
-
Yes that would be great to have a big showing from SCTA at clean up.Like George said just enough rain to help with healing of lakebed.Remember breakfast & lunch on cleanup day looking forward to seeing you all.

-
Do you think it will be dry by May?
Before you can answer that question you have to ask "When will it stop raining?" Check back in April.
2.57 inches at El Mirage since Saturday. More coming Wednesday. A lot more.
-
According to rain guage on fence on SCTA property 1 and 3 quarters since Sat.And is raining now.Way we are socked in probably rain most of day.Tiny Lke front Property and drive in rivers to get here.

I remember a song that said
It never rains in Southern California.
Maybe the composer had never been there.
FREUD
-
Either the composer was never here or he's a dreadful liar. We keep hearing of how "the big one" (earthquake for non-residents) will cause California to separate from the rest of the U.S. and drift off into the Pacific ocean. With all this rain we just might FLOAT off into the Pacific.
-
Well Rain all day out here at Lake El Mirage Was just checking rain total non 3 inches since Saturday
-
The National Weather Service station at the other end of the lake bed is at 3.98 since Saturday. Still way more rain scheduled for today. And it's only December.
-
Hey Dean, can you post that weather link again. Thanks
-
OK 11:30 out here on scta property we have #.94 inches rain so far.It has not rained for about 2hrs.The lake is really full up in bushes about 10 feet from Lake Bed.Actually Sun trying to poke out.

I have been trying to find national weather service out here at El Mirage and closet I can find is at George AFB.I have been reporting how weather is at SCTA property And where SCTA puts on events but it seems others know more than I do so I won't waste your time anymore with reports from west end of lakebed
-
Tiny, Please waste our time. You ARE our El Mirage weather station. NOAA is fine but you are right there. How much more accurate can the weather be than from you?
-
Tiny,
A rain guage can only tell how much rain has accumulated.
You can step outside, hold out your hand and tell it IS raining.
Keep up the good work!!!!!
Tom
-
Tiny! We would much rather hear it from you. There is a NWS rain gauge at the other end of the lake bed that can give us rain amounts. Only you can look out and say "WOW! It's a lake out there."
Go Tiny! Yea! We appreciate pictures too.
-
Tiny,
take a look at this website and scroll to bottom of page.
it has the local live website/weather stations listed
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=92301
You may find one closer than the airport, for instance, I found one just a 1/2 mile from my location here and monitor it.
I seem to remember last year we were praying for rain, now, let the sun shine and the wind blow!!
John
-
Tiny...only you can wade out to the starting line and measure how deep it is :-D
JL222
-
Tiny the weather bureau cannot give us anything but guesses. They also do not keep track of how much water is on the lake or if it is drying out. Only YOU can give us accurate visual information. Please keep it up YOU ARE THE MAN also have a very Merry CHRISTmas
Geo

Tiny:
This "weather bureau" is the US N O A A site, and their forecasts are about as good as you'll get. They are the only ones that have satellites, for instance, and operate the biggest weather radars. I like the site also because there are no advertisements - it loads faster, and at least for us up here -- the forecasts are surprisingly accurate. When they say the snow, for instance, is going to diminish after 1PM -- by damn if it doesn't start slacking off at, maybe, 12.45. They're good.
So anyway, I've put "El Mirage, CA" into their little blank box at the top/middle of their page -- and this is where it took me. I don't know if "10 miles WNW of Adelanto" is where you are -- but you can get a good idea this way. I haven't figured out yet if there's a way to enter G P S coordinates - which would allow you to zero in very accurately.
Here 'tis -- check it out: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=El+Mirage&state=CA&site=SGX&textField1=34.6022&textField2=-117.63&e=0
-
NOAA can't walk out the front door and look around and give us an accurate report such as,,,," Oh Shik,,that waters deep,,,,and cold too!" lolololol Keep up the good work, and the personnal touch Tiny, we love it! Merry Christmas to you and Yours!
-
Ther is lots of water.Wind blowing easy and lots of waves out there. Now mud patrol has lots of work these Holidays and they have been doing a good job.Merry Chrirtmas everyone will be gone 2 vdays will have a report Sunday with pictures.   :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
Tiny does a great job keeping us posted on the El Mirage. I want him to keep it up, let's all be fair as he lives on the lake bed and knows what he is talking about.
BTW
You can also look at the SCTA web site and click on El Mirage and Then weather. It's up to date and spot on.

THANKS loads, TINY.
Hang in there.

A satelite is what, 20,000 miles up in space. Tiny is right there. Who are you going to belive? I'll take Tiny's word over a satelite any day. Thanks again Tiny and Merry Christmas.
-
Tiny,Thanks loads and Merry Xmas. I did Mud Patrol the weekend of the clean up. Things are looking good and the only thing I saw on the lakebed was George and the BLM checking it out and 2 ultralight and a twin engine private plane. They split pretty quick. We just might get lucky!
-
With the rain Christmas night we had a total of 4 !/2 inches here on west end of lake El Mirage. As soon as my daughter comes out I will have pictures for you all.
-
Hey, folks -- lighten up. I acknowledge that Tiny is at the lake -- and is a resource that few groups or organisations have for giving on-the-spot weather. Now I'll suggest that you read my post and see that I was suggesting that the NOAA weather is - if nothing else - the forecast site that will load fastest because it isn't loaded with commercials. As for the satellites that are 23,000 miles or so in space -- they give a better view of the weather patterns than any local TV stations weather radar will show. Tiny, I thank you for being willing to let us know what's going on there.

Well, about #90 == I didn't work my way back through the stuff, but I've never figured out on the NOAA weather site where to find current/recent precip. totals. On the local site, for instance, I'll try to find how much we got in that downpour yesterday -- and see a trace here, .01" there -- no totals, no summaries. If there's a total column -- I haven't found it.
-
Slim:When you type in a city you get a "point forecast" for the city center. It is never a weather station, but a computer model of that point. You can pan on the map displayed and click anywhere for a better forecast of a particular point location. The map shown is a point several miles south of the lake bed.
On the link you posted scan down the right side under Current Conditions near the current temperature.
Click on More Local WX:
This gives you a list of the weather stations around the point location.
There is a link for the El Mirage weather station. It sits 5 miles southeast of the SCTA building and 3/4 mile north of the entrance station.
It gives the 3 day summary for that location. In the upper left corner is a link for the 7 day summary.
This works for any location. Not all stations collect rain data.
If you return to the main page go further down to Additional Forecasts and Information and click on Hourly Weather Graph. It gives detailed hourly temperatures, wind and rain graphs. It's going to rain starting 10pm Tuesday night. For El Mirage the graph for wind and gusts is always helpful.
-
If you go to this one from page 1 it gets you right to the El Mirage weather station data. Data in this format is only available where an automated reporting weather station exists.

The weather sucks here in Utah. Way to much rain. The yearly rain fall is about 8". We got got that in two days last week and now it's raining again (all day) and snow that will turn into slush tomorrow. Sure hope the river is going to handle all of it. :-P

Hey Glen, where exactly you at? I truck through SW Utah over to Richfield, then head for Fallon,NV via US50. Was good when I left yesterday, but I heard it was snowing this morning.
In Phoenix right now and its been raining since Kingman. Been looking around for an old dude with a beard,a funky huge boat and a grip of livestock..........
-
Hey Rifleman. Glen's down South but I'm just outside of Richfield in Salina. How often do you get up this way? Wayno
-
Well heavy wind overnight pushed water to eastern part of lakebed now it needs to work back to make it smooth
-
Hey Rifleman. Glen's down South but I'm just outside of Richfield in Salina. How often do you get up this way? Wayno
Bout twice a week. Usually Sunday night/Monday morning and around Wednesday/ Thursday.
I run for DP Curtis.
-
Rifleman, just outside of St.George. I can PM you my phone # if you want to get together sometime.
-
That white stuff in my yard ain't salt :-o
-
Thanks Tiny. They're sayin wind for the next day or so. Lets hope we have something good to run on this year.

Won't dry in time to make any runs this year, perhaps in 2011?
(Stan put me up to it I promise)

I'm old and decrepit and forgetfu...............crap! I can't even remember that word!

but it is SNOWIN' on the lake right now!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

Yes lots of white stuff & it is not salt :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D    :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
Tiny, You sure the white stuff isn't salt? If it is salt it will save a long drive in August.

PICS WE NEED PICS. I'VE NEVER SEEN THE LAKEBED UNDER........................SNOW??
-
I will try to get pictires on soon.I have to get daughter to show me how.Just learning computer taxed me hard.Need to get some locals out here for pictures.
-
Somewhere in here I've got a photo or two from a year or so ago - when there was enough snow at El Mirage to make for pretty photos of the entrance sign being snow covered, at least. I can't in a quick scan through, find said pictures -- but I can attest to the fact that there has been snow there -- and not all that long ago, either.
-
Back in the 80s Cagle and I woke up to snow on the lake bed and two hours later we ran. There were a few freeze plugs blown out the night before. It was very cold that day but that didn't stop us.
-
Jon,
I saved those pictures. Not the lakebed, but the entry road.
Tom
-
Yes, those are the ones. Thanks.
-
WOW, I knew it spinkled snow there but not that much?
-
Maybe we could start a snowmobile class. I bet Jon has one ready to go. :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
I know it's not what you'd expect, what with Nancy and me living in a "destination" for snowmobilers -- but we don't take part in the sport. Don't own one, don't even borrow one. For whatever reason -- we just haven't got around to being interested. I've ridden 'em once or twice over the years and I guess that it's my lack of desire for sporting in the cold that keeps my needs at bay. I could see getting a woodsy ATV long before a snow mobile. The ATV wood be handy on our property for exploring the way out back - as well as for chores, like bringing in firewood. But snowmobiles? Nah -- just bring yours up here for some primo fun, spend lots of money with the local merchants, then go the heck home. We'll be here next year.
-
Yeah I had soo much snow in phelan had to use my rhino (ATV not animal) to get around. Tiny, we are going to gu kayaking and rafting on LAKE this week and will post pics soon.
Ed :-o
-
Please stay off the lake bed...
Happy New Year..

John, I said LAKE not LAKEBED, I don't scubadive so I can't get to the lakebed ! ! ! I race on the same lakebed as you, so why would I do anything to damage the racing surface. Besides I don't have enough oooomph to paddle out from the edge (yeah it is that full) to the course.
Ed
-
Let the flaming begin......
-
Nobody has been out on lake & done any damage. You could bring ice skates early in morning. :-D :-D :-D   :-o :-o

Hey Tiny,
Got word from Denamark yesterday, they still want to come down for the meet in May. We will have the roadster ready for that meet. Looking forward to seeing you again, say hello to your son and the others,

I got this today - from Tiny, I expect. He sent it via phone and didn't sign it with his name -- but I've got my suspicions. . . Thanks. Sorry it's kinda small -- phone camera, you know.

Doubt if it looks like that today. About 60f and clear as a bell. We @ High Desert Racers are going to be doing alot of mud patrol for the forseeable future!

I was near Mojave riding my dirt bike 10 days ago and the snow on the ground was pretty much gone.
-
Yes the snow is gone that picture was Jan 3rd.I will send you picture in morning Slim from phone will get attachmernt for camera soon us old folks are slow
-
Tiny, go easy on that "old folks are slow" talk. I don't think you're all that much older than me, if at all, and I sure don't need to start thinking of myself as old. Why, my first Social Security check hasn't even arrived (but is due next week).
Don't worry about sending camera-phone pictures. I'm glad to have them to post.
-
SLIM, No need to worry about money. I will be sending you some $$ at the end of the month when I get my SS check! I haven't forgot, thanks again, Lance

Buzz

As long as it had appropriate speed rating

I would think it would be open season for a bazooka test. :-D

No Glen you don't need to shoot my dog, he wasn't out far enough to hurt the course

Not your dog, but anything mobile even with a pontoon that would leave a rut. Even a prop driven swamp thing. lol

The fence BLM put up so they can charge entry.

How could they?
JL222

JL222,
I think only the lakebed itself is closed to use when it is wet. The rest of the place is open and accessable.
-
How do you get around, over, under, past this?

Stupid question, but what is the maximum depth of water when it peaks during rain?
Anyone know?

JL222,
I think only the lakebed itself is closed to use when it is wet. The rest of the place is open and accessable.
I know they don't close the the whole desert, but the environmentalist have closed a lot.
Dean's foto shows my question :-D

-
One, the gate is open you just drive in and obey the signs warning you not to go onto the lake bed if it is wet.
Two, the fence does not yet enclose the whole property.

Way back up in shadow Mountains.Down here at our end so far nobody has got close .When it will be bad is weekend nights after most water has gone away.
-
OK,did Mud Patrol Saturday. Lake still has ALOT of water on it. Our racecourse is still submerged all the way from about access rd #3 all the way to Calloways. Its starting to recede from the north and south shores.
Didn't see anybody near the water, but several vehicles were running along the edges. I called the BLM comm center and was told there were no LEOs in the area. Apperantly there was a big rock crawling event near Lucerne and they were all over there. So basically,my time was wasted. At least from my position (MM#3/access rd.#9) I saw no incursions of the lakebed. When I left,I found the gate wide open.
On top of that,I helped a hispanic guy get his UNREGISTERED Chinese quad running. His group had a total of 6 people(Two adult males, two teenage males and a boy and a girl in the 8-10 age range riding quads that were WAAAY too big for them). 4 of the quads were Chinese and were displaying no Green Stickers and the two Japanese quads the teenagers were riding had stickers that were 4 years outta date. I commented that the younger kids were on quads too big for them and the reply as "its OK,hes been riding since he was 2". They also made comment about having been hassled at other parks,so thats why they come to El Mirage.
Its nice to see that the hundreds of thousand of tax dollars spent on a visitors center and that the personnel are doing such a great job of enforcing the rules on everybody else like they do on us. I feel all warm and fuzzy to know that the portion of the 1/3rd of my paycheck that I 'voluntarily' give the government every month is being used SO efficiently along with the time I spent there trying to protect the lakebed with no LEO backup.
Gotta love that bureacratic efficiency
-
Rifleman...Bvillercr was there friday, not sure on time, but gate was shut. Do you drive thru gate to come in and was there a ranger there to take fees?
Whats a LEO?
-
I stopped by El Mirage on Friday about 11am and drove past the first and second entrances and then turned around before the dirt road. Both gates were shut at that time, not sure if there are more gates elsewhere? No rangers where in site at that time and a few trailers with quads and bikes were coming in.
-
Whats a LEO?
Law enforcement officer?
-
Rifleman...Bvillercr was there friday, not sure on time, but gate was shut. Do you drive thru gate to come in and was there a ranger there to take fees?
Whats a LEO?
The gate I speak of is the one east of the main road on Colusa. It is closed with nothing more than a bungy cord. A LEO is a Law Enforcement Officer I.e. a ranger. When we do mud patrol we are nothing more than underglorified security guards whose duty is to observe and report. Problem is there was NO ONE to report to.
-
I opened that gate so I could get acces to Lake Rd and the area I wanted to use as an observation point, then closed it when I was through it. At the end of the day when I left,I found it open, the bungy cord dangling and a passle of dirt bike, quad and UTV tracks. Alot of vehicle entered the park before the visitor center opened. If their passes are supposed to displayed openly,I never saw one.
I am very appalled at the BLM's lackadaisical attitude. Especially when I spent a whole day off(and I only get a day and a half off a week)doing MY duty. The idea that I call the BLM comm center and get a blasé "oh,nobody out there today",really p i s s e s me off.

:-D :-D Hey I just got back from the lake, and had nice chats with 3 Rangers (leo's), and the mud patrol guy, the lake was under close supervision, I was only there for 4 or 5 hours though, here are some fresh pics from today. the water has gone down about 6" but still has at least another foot or so to go. First pic is looking down course, #2 looking south, #3 looking north. Enjoy, Ed

Today at El Mirage it has been windy no rain and lake bed is drying out even have seen dust on this end.
-
Thanks Tiny. We had some rain down here. More to come. Hope it doesn't make up there.

Soooooooooooooooooo, What are the chances of our coarse drying out by May?? I wanna race!! Cant wait till June or July,
-
Looks like 0.15 rain since 8:26 last nite...

If you go to this one from page 1 it gets you right to the El Mirage weather station data. Data in this format is only available where an automated reporting weather station exists.

Jim had posted this site before (thanks Jim!) it gives the actual rainfall, not just the %chance of rain. A lot more useful.
Tom
-
The conditions can change pretty fast in the desert. Still have two months for it to dry. Sure hope they can keep everyone off of it until it is dry.
-
Agreed, the bigger challenge will be keeping people off till it dries. There's still time for it to dry I'd think.
-
Wind has been blowing hard today not much rain last night.Muddy water going all over & people are doing a good job at keeping everyone off lakebed.
-
Had rain and snow here last night in Adelanto. Biggest hinderance to the lakebed drying(besides more rain)is that it is now saturated and the only way for the water to leave is through evaporation. Wind will definitely help(and it moving the water around has a nice polishing effect),but we are gonna need some heat.
Everybody is doing a great job keeping folks off the surface. Just need a really strong and aggressive BLM LEO presence with fresh citation books and sharpened pencils doing THEIR job.
Fingers crossed and looking forward to the new season!
-
So, Do I take the chain drive off the sidecar and fit a jet ski drive?
-
We got 1/4 inch this weekend wind will help remember we have 2 1/2 months before May meet

Thanks Tiny. You're way ahead of a satelite guestimate!

At least there aren't any giant ruts.

At least there aren't any giant ruts.
YET. Been told that all the LEOs are gonna be at the Barstow office. If we see somebody on the lakebed,we have to call Dani at the visitor center, then she'll call Barstow and they'll send somebody out IF ANYONE IS AVAILABLE. :x

Chino would have been closer!

I would recommend that she stop performing tricks and use mouth wash.

ONE PUDDLE LEFT, down by the visitor center. Now we just need for it to dry down deeper so the SMOOTH will last ! ! !
-
SO? How's it looking?? can I race in May? CAN I CAN I CAN I??
-
I was told they will make a decision as to open the lakebed on monday. It is dry down about 1 inch or more, but a little damp under that. It wouldn't hurt to let it dry out some more though. I will try to post what I hear on monday.

P.S. I think you will get to race in may! ! ! ! ! ! :-D :-D :-D
-
If it isn't ready to run for May lets postpone it and run a two day in June. We've had poor surfaces to run on for a few years now. Why risk the surface for one meet?
-
It's the BLM that decides whether or not to open the lakebed. It is dry enough for us to run on, but it's the IDIOTS that go out and tear it up that is the problem.
-
Why make a decision on a May meet in early April? Things tend to change over a period of time.
DW
-
Well for what it is worth, for better or worse, the BLM opened the lakebed at 8 am today. Let's just hope the IDIOTS stay off our end.
-
i think it is a big mistake to open the lakebed at this time. the ground is still very soft and i know that there will be those people that will feel the need to go out and tear up the lakebed. the BLM should have kept the lake bed closed until the meet in may so it would be perfect for running on. just my two cents.
-
Lake bed open = $$$
Tom G.
-
Tom you're right!
Let those $$$'s be spent on some enforcement rather than someone sitting up at the new Visitors Center.
Isn't "Management" the last part of BLM?
Tom
-
I don't know that $$$ enters the equation.
Years ago they shut down a campground in Yosemite at Badger Pass to save money.
I got to thinking about that and couldn't see how shutting down a revenue generating source saved money.
So I asked a ranger. He said that the park operating budget wasn't tied to the income. By shutting down the campground they saved money on expenses.
I asked him why they didn't shut down all of the campgrounds and save a lot of money. He just gave me a dirty look. Gotta love our government.
-
I keep seeing more and more movie/commercials/TV shows with Elmo as a backdrop.
Is this because I'm noticing it more, or is commercial use of the land increasing?
Could this have an effect on when the lake opens?
-
As an aside, but sorta related -- Michigan has just announced the closing of a half-dozen campgrounds around the state - as a cost-saving measure. The campgrounds, though, are self-pay - campers are on the honor system to take one of the tags, write name and such on it, put money in the envelope, and drop it into the pipe/lockbox. I guess I can see that there's some expense - but these are sites way the heck out there -- woods, mostly, and access only on foot. Not like EM, for sure.
-
Pat, this has been going on for years. Geo Calloway has lots of stories about the movie shoots and the mess they sometimes leave.

so has any official decision been made? Are we gonna have a May race?? I'm ready, the bikes loaded up and ready to go!!
-
Normally the SCTA president (currently D3) goes out to the lake bed a week or so before the event to make the "call" on if we'll race. This will be posted on the SCTA web site & I'm sure forwarded here.
See you there!
-
I was out there yesterday and it is really NICE :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
and what were you doing out there ED?? and fri
-
The lakebed looks super but what a person could do is come to El Mirage clean up day May 7 then you will see for yourself.
-
As far as what I was doing, we were checking the grip and stability of the surface at speed,(also the car). it seems to be PERFECT.
I ALSO SIDE WITH TINY, EVERYONE NEEDS TO COME OUT TO THE LAKE FOR CLEANUP DAY ON MAY 7. OUR SUPPORT IS MUCH NEEDED AND APPRECIATED.

It's a strange forecast, but remember it is the high desert....

The wind will be a factor
-
Whats the allowable max wind to allow racing?
-
Depends on the direction of the wind. 15 mph is max. I used to stop them at 10 mph with a direct cross wind. BTW 22 mph wind predicted for tomorrow.
-
Radar shows a large thunderstorm over the lake (4:30 PM PDT) right now. There was one at about 2:00 PM also. Is any of it getting to the ground Tiny?

I can't tell you what happening out there right now,but last night an hour or so before we did fireworks a real old fashioned gully washer moved through the area and here in Adelanto. Hope the BLM evacuated the lakebed of we might have had our racecourse destroyed yesterday :-(

Not were it rained :?

copy 34.6344, -117.5489 into google maps

Not sure if this is the same station.
MEMRC1 is locacted about 3000 ft north north west from the visiter center on the east side of lakebed.
try www.wunderground.com
scroll to bottom of page for El Mirage and it shows all the reporting stations near.
These coordinates show location 34.634514,-117.54884
put into google maps search and use satellite view.
John
sorry for the dup info
-
The National Weather Service station / Wunderground station at El Mirage is 5 miles from Tiny's location.
Not surprising that the rain gauge there didn't show any rain and Tiny shows 3/4 of an inch. The storm was very compact and violent.
Ton of rain if you were in the path and nothing right outside the path.
-
The other detail about watching the weather stations is virga.
While the radar shows percipitation it may not quite make it to the ground.

There is definately a lot of water on our end.Talked to Don Ferguson & he will come out in morning
-
Hi guys guess what this picture was taken at noon TODAY. There is also high humidity, and more rain is expected :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( Only about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep, but thats what didn't soak in already. Not very hot, or windy

With that much water alone not to mention the possibility of more before the meet I am resigned to not running this weekend...looks like I get to spend time with my visiting mother in law... :-o

You guys can cut and paste all you want, but I live here. 138 is closed, phelan rd. is closed, hwy 18 closed, all from running water, to be open soon. EL MIRAGE...... NOT A DROP today. The lakebed has it's OWN weather conditions, so if you aren't right there on the spot you can't know, only guess what is going on. I happen to live right up the hill (7 miles south) of the lakebed, and have a GREAT view of the whole course and don't have to speculate. Yesterdays rain drenched the WEST END ONLY, the east 60% is bone dry.But if there is even 1 puddle left the BLM won't open the lakebed. But don't worry Mud Patrol has already been taken of if we don't race this weekend. So stay tuned and I will try and keep you posted with the drying.
Ed :-D :-D :-D
-
Don Ferguson said he will post on the SCTA web site as the only official info as if it will happen or not. He is going tomorrow to look at the lake bed.

hope that the racing goes off as planned.

sorry if some of you got the idea I was posting "Official Info", I was just saying what I see, same as I tell D3. from now on I will keep it to myself and you can drive down here and look for yourself.
GOOD-BYE
-
Ed, your info is as legit as it gets considering that you're our forward observer. I think the comment about official info coming from D3 is in regards to whether or not we're going to have a meet, not what condition the lake bed is in. Stick with it man and keep the info coming. We all really appreciate it.
Many many many years ago they ran a meet from the east end heading west. I wasn't there (don't think I was born yet) but I have photos of it. I guess if you really want to have a meet you make do.
-
NATHAN, I really want to have a meet!!!! If we do look me up I have something for you.

Nathan,
You are not suggesting a penalty for running out the back door........are you??
I already put the mud prop on the Mastercraft for tow/recovery duty.

Not looking good for next weekend forecasting wet stuff for late friday-sat and Sun in Clovis area.

Mr. Fenn says that as of yesterday it's damp on the east end with a few puddles but dry on the west end where we run. The lake bed is currently closed. Weather forecast still calls for a 50% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday. :-o

i gotta say that ed fenn clued me in on something veeerrrry interesting. if you all will remember the september meet, we had a major electrical storm coming right for us. i figured that we'd for sure get dumped on and ed says, nope, it'll go right around us. i says huh are you crazy look at those clouds!! and he says it'll split right over the lake bed and half will go that way (east) and half will go that way (west) and the lake bed will be fine (he lives up on the hill in phelan and sees this happen all the time apparently). and sure as shit the storm clouds split and went right around the lake bed and we still had our race.
i checked that link for the weather and it's for adelanto. adelanto is definitely not el mirage dry lake bed and after seeing what i saw in september i know that the weather can be very different across a relatively short distance. the weather forecast is predicting a 1/4" of rain on saturday in adelanto. let's hope ed is right again and whatever comes over those mountains splits over the lake bed and goes around us.

I'll be ready to take on all comers in the B/GRMR class!

i checked that link for the weather and it's for adelanto.
No, read it again. Adelanto is the nearest community, and it clearly states 10 miles WNW.
Hmm . . . What is 10 miles WNW . . . The lakebed!
Nathan I tried telling people for 4 years that the weather station is not out here any more
The active weather station is 3/4 mile NNW of the BLM office
Latitude 34.6344; Longitude: -117.5489

dean you're entirely correct. pardon my oversight.
stupid question if anyone knows: is that "point forecast" a prediction based on direct weather info that's being gathered? i'm thinking that it isn't since tiny commented that there is no longer a weather station near the lake bed. so it's probably a forecast based off of weather data collected somewhere else, yes? can any one who logs onto that site pick a spot to be point forecasted? pretty cool if that's possible.
either way, dean's weather page says (as of 2 am this morning) highest chance of rain is friday night with it quickly dropping off on saturday. forecasted rainfall is a tenth of an inch or less.
-
forecasted rainfall is a tenth of an inch or less.

Until 2009 I had only attended Bonneville even thought it has now been 126 times.
But when I first walked on the dirt I had a feeling of at last experiencing the real deal.
Chicken skin, a lump in the throat and tears on my cheeks.
I was alone with history and I was humbled.
After all, racers ran on the dirt years before any hot rodder ran at B'ville.
HEROS emerge from the dirt.

Also, I thought there were plans to install a web cam in the same area. Any news on either of these?

Mike Manghelli told me they were working on it and needed a couple of items to complete it. Maybe over the winter they can finish the install at the property.

No just kidding. I am not in the know but, I understand that some talks are under way with BLM and the other users(Friends of El Mirage) to control the traffic. Maybe look into some method of grooming. We all know that not much can be done with the natural dirt surface. Hopefully, something can be done.

Hey Tiny, it's easy to take humor as criticism when posting on the web. I know from experience that when it comes to racing we all get a testosterone rush which outpaces our common sense.
I don't think anyone posting on this site is out to humiliate or upstage one another, we just all want any race to happen: right now, right on time..................
It's going to be a long winter, let's all lighten up and enjoy each day as if it's our last............. it might just be.......... Bob

It just missed El Mirage. Valyermo 30 miles west measured 3/4".

I was out there Saturday for pot hole duty and it was fine. Surface looked good for the track but there was still a little moisture underneath so we may get some potato chips by this weekend. The shutoff area looks about as usual, heavy breaking will loosen it up. No rain on the rain guage yet and if there are no thunderstorms today or tonight none is forecast for the rest of the week.

Radar on the internet shows big thunderstorm cell hanging over the east end of El Mirage right now (2:40pm, 9/10). Been hanging there quite a while. Nothing showing on Natl Weather Service "real time" weather conditions as of 2:26pm regarding rainfall. What's happening out there Tiny? Rain on the east end from what you can see from the west end??? Hope you are mending well from your tumble off the stairs.

This e-mail from George Calaway, Mayor of El Mirage just poped up this morning.........
"I was out on the lake yesterday, Had to pull Ed Fenn out who was stuck over on Lake Road. There was standing water along the north shoreline & Ed (before he got stuck) said that the east end was flooded. I would say that Course Prep is probably off for Saturday morning, I was in hopes that Lonnie would come up early today & my the call. Peggy of "The Friends" made the call to close the lake yesterday, as usual there were NO BLM out here. As far as the Oct meet, my suggestion is to CHECK the SCTA Website before coming out next weekend" George

What time does tech open Sat morning? I'm not gonna make it out till late fri. We spent the off season building a new motor and this is what happened this past Saturday while testing.

Faded, the ventilated piston design has been tried many times with out success. Hope you have better luck.
-
when does tech open on friday?
They are shooting for between 11:30 & 12:00

The tech guys have to haul in a ton of stuff and get it all set up, then they can think about teching your vehicle.
If you can get there early and help them set up, then they might start earlier.

Ah, two strokes.
ALWAYS carry that bottle of muriatic acid to etch the aluminum off the cylinder walls, slap a new piston in it, and go back racing.

For some reason the link under El Mirage does not bring up the property site. It brings up El Mirage Recreational area, which is different.

So for now until they get it fixed use the link I provided. Or on the Home page of SCTA under where it says our next event, click on "Weather Station at El Mirage" and it will take you to the right page. Or just click on this link,

I found the National Weather station by entering 34.634361 and 117.548889 at Google Earth.
4500 ft up the road from ranger station and about 41/2 miles from start.
After finding site, find ruler on header bar and you can maneuver the mouse for distance from different areas.
Don't enter latitude or longitude or you get shanghaied to China :-

If you use the link to the SCTA weather station I have posted in previous posts, go to the bottom of the page and where it says "view page units as" change it from Metric to US Imperial and it will give you the rain total in inches.
Or here is a new link for the display in inches, for those of you that are interested in bookmarking this site.

I hope this helps eliminate any confusion. Also don't forget there is a Summary button at the top of the page for your viewing.

I think it is as that end always is the last to dry up .

If the lakebed is dry but the entrance is muddy, wouldn't the creation of an alternate entrance seem logical? Probably been suggested/explored before, huh? :dhorse:

Back in the good old days, I used to go in by George's house. Saved a few miles since i am coming down from the north. It was great as far as I was concerned. But didn't work for the BLM. Didn't fit the rules.

There are alternative entrances. This was discussed. If its wet/muddy or damp (and judging by the rain we got down here El Mirage could well have got rain overnight) it better to close the lake to everyone rather than have some looney 4wd chew up the lakebed because its cool to play in the mud.

-
I want to see a picture of this mud spot that kept us from racing while (from what I've heard) 99% of the lake bed was dry and in good condition. For many, many, many years the policy was always that the lake bed was closed where ever it was wet. It wasn't but a couple of years ago that we had a meet where a big wet spot on the east end was coned off and we (along with everyone else) were allowed onto the lakebed. Now, it seems if 1% of the lake bed is wet then the entire lake bed is closed. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. Unfortunately, I think some of the upper powers in the SCTA convinced the BLM operators that closing the lakebed if wet anywhere during the winter was a good idea which I think they've come to adapt as their policy all year long which is RIDICULOUS. I'm F'ing pissed off and I want some GD heads to role... or at least some heated yelling/screaming. The BLM is all but too happy to close off the lake bed, close up the visitor center and go home. F(you fill in the blank) the BLM!!! While there's been a lot of focus on saving the salt, it might be time we put some effort towards saving our dirt.
-
Yep and now we have to pay our way in, what a crock of sh*t that is.
-
From the SCTA Facebook page
"MESSAGE FROM THE SCTA PRESIDENT – 5/16/2015
The reason for the cancellation of the El Mirage May Meet this weekend was due to the BLM Rulebook and Procedures. It states that if the lakebed dirt is wet enough to scrape up into a ball it remains closed until dry. With the amount of moisture and rain in the area, Katrina Symons of the BLM (Barstow Area Field Manager) would not open the lakebed.
Thursday I stayed the night at the lakebed to report any and all activity as soon as possible that could shut down our event. Things looked positive while I was there that we could proceed with our event. At 6:30 a.m. on Friday I met with Katrina and we toured the lakebed and in my opinion it was 99% dry. The location of the mud is at the east end by the Visitor’s Center. There is a spot where the dune brush removal from the past is a little low and Katrina was able to scrape up enough lakebed material and form the mud into a ball. She then explained to me in order to maintain the preservation of our beloved El Mirage Lakebed, it would have to remain closed.
I would like to THANK the Board of Directors, Club Reps and Membership at Large for working together to spread the word of the closure of the lakebed and cancellation of the May Meet.
Your Concerned Race Director & SCTA President,
Bill Lattin"
I might add, we all knew it would come to this when the BLM began to put up the fence.
-
Its amazing one percent of the lake bed is damp so the entire area is closed that's just not right. Looks like the time has come to work towards a more intelligent solution to such a small amount of damp ground being used as an excuse to keeping the entire area off limits.
I doubt I will ever make it to Elmo for a run being close to 3000 miles away on the East coast however when I see a wrong it just makes my blood boil. Time for some protest bring back the sixty's.
-
I know they're getting lots of bucks off us competitors -- open or not. But they're losing lots not selling the one-day passes for spectators. And we know they're into making money -- like with salt mining permits, grazing permits, etc.
I guess it's easier running a place when it's locked down and no one is there.
-
I have Called, I have sent Emails, I have contacted Board Members and fellow racers
But if we want to be able to continue to race we are going to have the get racers all across the WORLD to get involved a start LOBBYING
the US HOUSE and SENATE the next thing you know we will not be able to get on it if the wind is blowing!! IF we are going to be able to continue to race -
-The 200 CLUB is the most logical --
-WE BETTER PULL our COLLECTIVE heads out of the Salt, Sand and and get organized!!!
Want to do something about it: it doesn't get any better than this:
The head of the App. Subcommittee is:
Rep. Ken Calvert R
CA CD 42
his office is right beside I-15
Riverside CA
Guys here is your Chance less that 3 week ago the BLM made their pitch for what??? More money of course!
All racers from ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD of B'Ville or El M. Go to his website and sign up for his news letter
Also on his website they list a number to call if you are having a problem with a federal Agency 1-951-277-0042
Call them---at 1-951-277-0042 ---BE POLITE-- but let them know that you have been going to EL Racing for years on PUBLIC LANDS that is a designated off highway recreation area and you feel like there was a WRONG CALL!!
IF you want to do something about this and I can get 100 folks that represent at least 20 states I will get more involved on my part in coaching and doing MORE!! Guys it time to fish or cut bait as the RED NECKS might say---Let's gitter done!!
signing off and going over to Rep. Calvert's web site to sign up!

I'm a couple of thousand miles away - but wonder, still, if anyone went to the lake to see what the conditions were/are like. We know that BLM said hexl, no, and that SCTA followed the BLM requirements -- but how about individual racers? Did any of you go out there for an in-person look? I wonder how bad it was - especially maybe on Monday after the even would have ended. I know that BLM said no admission -- but maybe you could walk in from whatever gate there is and see what's what.
-
On the road from the highway there is a 2" berm on the roads edge. It was darker than the rest of the dirt. Looking from the visitors center out on the "lakebed" I didn't see anything that remotely resembled moisture. It was only a 1,000 mile round trip for me. Mursick drove considerably further. I was there Friday morning at 9:00 or 10:00. Personally, I think we've been had. :x Wayno

Wayno..... we were.
Slim, Thursday & Friday the rain was heaviest in the SoCal area but the mountains to the southwest held back the majority of the weather/rains form El Mirage. There was a short rain burst on Thursday that only kept the dust down. The storm due late Friday early Saturday slid down south to the San Diego area and never became a threat.
Some pictures from Holly Martin & the SCTA of the west end of El Mirage (the end we race on) showing the lakebed Thursday, Friday, & Saturday.

Bill Latten was on site Thur. PM till Fri. AM, see the message from the president on the SCTA web site.
-
I saw the message from Bill L. and know what it said, and I'm not disputing at all what he said. I was asking if anyone took a good look later - Saturday or Sunday - to see how the racing surface was when the event would have been happening, not the day or two before. It's not Bill than I'm questioning in any way. I'm wondering what other racers saw.
-
I suppose we should be grateful that a governmental official has been handed a clear cut, predefined, inarguable, demonstrable definition of a go/no-go situation -
". . . if the lakebed dirt is wet enough to scrape up into a ball it remains closed until dry."
But I get the sense that SCTA has raced on wetter lakebeds before.
-
Good comment, Chris. The "ball of mud", while certainly not scientifical in nature, seems to be a very realistic way to quickly determine if the conditions are such. Not saying that a ball of mud is the wrong or right stuff for racing, but that at least it's a signpost that's easy to check when an "official" is trying to make the go/no go decision.
Now if the requirement were something "a ball of mud no less than 2.54" diameter and weighing at least 75.19 ounces, and with a measured moisture content (measured by verified equipment) of 26.3%" -- then it'd sound more like an "official" requirement. Let's stick with a plain ball of mud.
-

No problem Slim, I don't think any racers hung out until Sunday just to see that it looked like the pictures I posted. George Callaway lives on the western edge of lakebed next door to the SCTA property and it has been reported by him and others that live nearby the the lakebed was dry throughout the weekend.
I think three things need to be remembered...
1) It didn't rain on the lakebed this weekend.
2) As Nathan pointed out the BLM has put cones around the low spot on the east end of the lakebed where the perpetual dampness is. We race 5 miles away from that point.
3) There are other access points to the lakebed.
I will say this; if they let the racers on this weekend they would have had to let every other user on too. If it would have rained while we were out there and couldn't load up quickly enough we would have had to leave our trailers on the lakebed until dry enough to remove them. This has happened before.
In the end we didn't race, and it was dry. Maybe a missed call of judgment. Maybe politics. The BLM rangers get paid whether we race or not, less work for them if we don't. The State gets any $$$ for entry fees etc.
-
Well, I'm not completely above cynicism.
I realize California has more microclimates than a lot of similar sized countries, but in a state where it's now illegal to sprinkle your lawn, where camp fires are forbidden in state parks, and water districts bicker about whether or not to irrigate the almonds or the lettuce in order to grant municipalities access to drinking water, where the hell in the high desert did a government official find a mudball?
I will say this; if they let the racers on this weekend they would have had to let every other user on too.
That's probably the best rationale, right there. If you put yourself in the BLM's shoes, how do you tell a bunch of ATV guys they can't go onto the lakebed, when they're seeing a stream of LSR guys dragging trailers out?
-

Not criticizing you Chris but......
It rained two weeks before our event at El Mirage and there is a spot near the east end entry that the water collects at.
I understand you and others from out of state have NEVER been to the dry lakes so your question is valid. I'm am answering it for you.
-
Is there a possibility the June event could be changed to a two day meet?
-
Is there a possibility the June event could be changed to a two day meet?
They're working on it. Friday nights SCTA board meet should shed some light...
-
I thought I would TRY and shed some light on the layout of El Mirage for our friends who may have never been there.
Below is a map of El Mirage dry lake.
The red line is the paved access road to the El Mirage Visitors Center/Ranger Station which is circled in yellow. The blue line is the main access path onto the lakebed where the gate is located. There are many other access paths but the BLM has fenced off most of the lake now requiring access $$$ through the Visitors Center. The pink circle is the low point of the lake and this is where water collects. If there is little wind and low temperatures it can take weeks to evaporate from this area.
Remember the racing area is 5 miles to the west of the low point
-
Makes sense. I'm starting position 177th!!!! Hate to get the car dirty for just one run on a single day meet.
-
The good thing (in a way) is that the call was made early enuf (and transmitted immediately) that most of us weren't at the gate waiting to go in. Kudos to Bill Lattin for staying on top of the situation -- a situation he could not control.
-
I understand you and others from out of state have NEVER been to the dry lakes so your question is valid. I'm am answering it for you.
Thanks, Michael.
I have actually been there, and while it's been better than 20 years, I'm not familiar enough with the topography to know how it looks during different weather events.
I think I'm just bellyaching about a lost event on the calendar. Seems a lot of us have been beat up by the weather the last few years.
I know Wayno had a bit of a haul to get there, and seeing as he and Gus were so gracious in helping me out last August-September in Utah, I'm disappointed that they - and all the other competitors - missed a chance.
Yeah - it goes with the game, and to your point, if it DID start raining during the event, and they weren't able to get out on a timely basis, that would be a real mess.
Next month . . .
-
While there have been some valid ideas posted, I think it is time to let our various gvmt representatives know what our position is on this. Just talking with other racers won't change BLM actions. The BLM is slowly transforming from a public lands caretaker role to one of controller of the public lands. If we all want to insure the future of this activity of turning time and money into speed we better be proactive in letting everyone know who might carry some influence with BLM policies. Politics is not as much fun as working on a racecar but politics might be necessary to keep racing. Refer to Sparkys references for government representatives to contact.
-
Its been already said that to open the lakebed for the SCTA meant the BLM would have to open it to everyone. What would have happened if some dingbat on a quad or a truck or a bike decided the cone off mud would be ideal for a bit of fun? Who would the BLM look at first? The SCTA. Losing one meet is an annoyance at best. Losing the lakebed would be a tragedy. Ever since the incident in Johnson Valley the BLM have been on the edge. It may be public and and we may be the public. But the BLM have the field and the ball. June will be here before you know. Kick back with a beer, look at your bike or car and imagine how fast you will go.

I don't think anyone ever suggested that they only open it for "us". Who is "us" anyways? I know we're racers and we'd be too busy racing to go screw off in the mud. But there are a lot of a-hole spectators that come to our events to "have fun" (aka get blitzed, race around the lake bed at 2 am on the loudest dirt bike in the world, ride through mud holes, etc). IMO those idiots aren't "us". So yeah, open it up to everyone. The BLM can't reasonably blame the SCTA should some a-hole decide to go mudding. They can only blame who ever does it themselves. If the BLM would do their f'ing job and post someone to monitor the mud hole then it wouldn't be a problem. But instead they want to be up our ass about wrist bands and how many feet exactly is the staging area. The SCTA puts on the absolute SAFEST event on BLM land in the whole country. They're hassling us just to hassle us.
If they keep closing the lake bed because 1% of it is wet and muddy, then we are effectively losing it. There has to be some middle ground here otherwise we might wind up back at Rosamond or Harper.
-
Do we have any racers in AZ, CA or ??? who are registered as a Democrat or Independent?
We have two members here in AZ who are on this committee who oversee the BLM?
I would like to furnish for someone with Talking Points, names and phone numbers. Between the two states we have 5 of the 14 members. I we want to keep racing this is something we HAVE to do

I have no problem getting in touch with anyone to keep our venues open but the name of this subject is "Rain at Elmo" and it's where we all come to see the weather or a report so how about moving this to it's own subject...Thanks

Nathan, My apologies. The talk of opening the lake bed for the SCTA and doing that meant the lake bed would have to be open to every one else was on another forum. CRS, the sun was in my eyes, the dog bit me.........................................................

Sparky,
President Bill Lattin went up last Friday and helped to lay out 5 Beautiful, Awesome courses. That should last us
for the rest of the season.
Lakebed dried fantastic after all the rain we had and you can hardly see, where we ran on it earlier this year.
Bill says it dried without putting to much of that flaky/chip like surface on the top. Nice and hard all the way.
So, you better have your car ready and come out Sparky.

 we are getting out our small tires then---hopefully my boy can hook them up!! :-D

Attention All !!!!
El Mirage Lakebed got some rain last night.
There is not much standing water, but there is enough moisture in our pit and pre stage area, that the BLM has closed the
lakebed for now. Looks like there might be a chance of more rain later today.
We will have a couple of board members up there all day and keep an eye on it.
Bill Lattin will go up there tomorrow morning and check it out for himself.
Will post more info as it comes in,
Mike

Thanks for the updates, Mike. We all appreciate them. :-D :-D

Yep. Nothing on the Scta website yet. Heather got it up on the FB page, but she is at work and in meetings.

EL MIRAGE UPDATE – 9/9/15
Well, Mother Nature is not being very nice again...El Mirage received some rain
yesterday and the starting line is under water. There is a very strong chance that the meet
will be cancelled. Bill Lattin the SCTA President/Race Director will be going out there to
check out the situation and give us an update asap.
Will keep you guys posted.

Here is the update as was just posted on the Scta FB page:
Attention ALL Racers, Workers, Crew, & Spectators:
The September Meet @ El Mirage is a GO!!!
Everyone will have to access the lake bed off of Colusa, which is the second entrance past the Visitors Center.
We cannot camp on the shore line at the West End. Most of the lake bed should be dry by Saturday -
If it "r..ns" again we will have to reevaluate.
*****YOU MUST STAY OUT OF THE MUD & ANY WATER*****
-
Sounds like we might have gotten a little leniency with the mud balls this time. :-D
-
Add a little time to your travel plans. The north road in is rough. We used it (in May?) during clean-up day. And, it's sorta entrenched, so I can't see how it would not be wet. No way to use the Countyline Road?
-
Are you required to have a special pass to get on to the lake bed for this weekend?
-
When will SCTA announce if the event is still on. Web site says the lakebed is closed.
-
Event is on!!!
-
Yep, John is correct.
THE SEPTEMBER EL MIRAGE EVENT "IS ON"
Here is what is posted on the Scta website.
LAKEBED IS CLOSED !!!
See info in Red Box:
EL MIRAGE UPDATE – 9/11/15

-
So -- on Saturday, can we use the usual entrance and just avoid cones?
-
Stan and others, after you go through the BLM checkpoint at the BLM building instead of proceeding straight towards the dirt, turn to the right and go up about a quarter of a mile and the entrance will be open and unlocked on your left-hand side. It will be well marked for those of us that can read and write and see. Should you see any mud or what appears to be loose soil please stray away from it and proceed towards Callaways or the starting line area of the lake bed as it is dry.
Noonan
-
Will a small car make it in on the north lake bed entrance? Is it worse then the regular entrance? Need to know before drive up!
-
Jerry I just drove a dually with a 15,000 pound trailer attached and was able to access the lake bed without any problems, a small car will do just fine stay off of any areas you see that are wet coned off or muddy.
We came in the entrance that is normal however passed up and went further towards Colusa road and then you make a right on Lake Road go to marker number two and make a very hard left then proceed down the road and make a right and go towards the SCTA building or Callaways.

Stan, are you a little porkier than usual?

On Mon, Nov 16, 2015 at 11:27 AM, I emailed NOAA regarding the automated weather reporting station at the east end of the lake bed,
Hi,
The weather station at El Mirage dry lake ( EMRC1 ) has been
inoperative for more than a month. When can we expect it to be on line
again?
Jim Dincau
Their reply today at 10 AM,
Hello Jim,
I finally reached someone with news on the El Mirage weather station. Funding has run out for maintaining that station and it is officially dead. Sorry about the bad news. We're sad about it too. I have requested that the observation will be removed from the forecast web pages.

Friends of EL Mirage show the lakebed closed !
-
On site weather stations show traces of rain. My son and I had course prep duty this weekend, from the SCTA property at the west end it looked fine, there were campers and trailers out there with ultra lights taking off and landing. I checked SCTA and Friends of El Mirage Facebook and web pages but as of 8:00 AM there was no notice of closure. We learned after driving out there that course prep was called off.
-
So it's dry and open now or.....? :?
-
I spoke with Russ O'Daly today and he says there is standing water on the lakebed.
-
Talked to Pat McDowell. Nothing official yet but we should know something in the next 24 hours. We're moving forward as if we're going racing.
-
From the SCTA Facebook page;
"El Mirage Lakebed is still closed. BLM will examine again on Friday morning and let us know if they will reopen for the weekend."
-
An Email from Pat said we would know on Thursday. Friday for most is cutting it close even if you are prepared.
-
BLM will allow the lakebed to be open tomorrow morning, Saturday AM. Not today. But we're good to go for racing!!

Even without the ruts, it looks like last weekends event would have been cancelled due to rain this past week.
We are running about 10 degrees below normal, and rain is still way above normal for May. I hope things dry out before the June event.

Not good News !! See below from Fakebook ....
May 31, 2019
Attention Racers:
Bill Lattin the SCTA President made a trip to El Mirage today.Due to the unsafe conditions from the stress cracks on the
lakebed, the June Meet has been cancelled. There is no return road and the stress cracks between the course and return road are severe and unfilled. (See Pics below)
Thank you,
SCTA Board
**Unfortunately when we had the recent rains and the lakebed was closed, there were people that came and got onto the lakebed.
They were caught doing donuts, and destroying the lakebed. Many were caught by law enforcement, but there comes a time when people just have to take responsibility for their own actions.
This really saddens us, we really look forward to these events. FOEM is in the process of repairing the unnecessary damage that was done to the lakebed.**
I'll see if I can add pics in next post.

Saturday was a beautiful day at El Mirage. A better turn-out than October as I understand it. The morning started a little chilly with a nice tailwind helping the early runs. Lotsa records with, it seemed to me, a bunch of well-prepared vehicles. The day continued with bright sunlight, a temp of about 62 that felt 70s, the wind going away and turning into a headwind in the early afternoon. Everyone was offered the chance to make 3 runs. They were begging for vehicles until they closed the day at 2 P.M.
Don't know anything about today's activities.

rained 1,46 in Sat may 21 between 4:30pm & 6:30 pm at weather station & far end of lakebed.
End of course under water when driving back from Adelanto where we went through a torrential downpour
and major flooding on Chamberlan Rd . Start and middle of course light rain and not muddy. Sun not muddy.
Race was cancelled and racerers were advised to exit west through the SCTA trailer shed gate and make a l
left turn and follow signs to EL Mirage RD,
Some didn't get the massage or ignored it and went out the regular way and got stuck.
Way out was washborded as HELL and caused problems.

We ran 2x Saturday, left the bike and trailer for maybe another run Sunday. It rained. Picked up trailer etc Sunday AM. Hadda go around the lakebed using a road around the "top." Used a pathway to get back down to the lake bed. Some wet areas we managed to avoid. Some cracks we took care while driving across.
Picked up the trailer and left using the "road" near the SCTA buildings.
Thanks to The Hoogerhydes for critical directions!
All in all ... an adventure.
Hopepfully see ya'll in June.
