Title: scattershiled missing SFI tag...still legal???
Post by: Hans Blom on November 09, 2009, 05:33:45 PM
I can't find the answer to this although I'm sure it's been asked a hundred times...I have a lakewood bellhousing with block plate , no cutouts or any damage but it is a few years old and the foil SFI tag is long gone for a repaint or whatnot. It's not one of the new cheap 'non-SFI' bellhousings you can get these days, just well used. Would this cause any hickup at tech? It's in a proven car, just changing tranny setups. thanks a ton. Hans

Contact Lake wood, they may be able tohelp you.  I have an older McCloud belhousing and they gave me a new sticker.  You MAY have to send it for inspection, I live not too far from McCloud.

Has not been an issue on my car. My blowshield is where it can be seen. So it has no cut outs and they can tell that. They don't time out. So I would say your good.

Neither of mine have stickers. One McCleod and one Lakewood. Many guys have cut off the bottoms and plated them to run smaller diameter flywheel/clutch combos and inspection has not been a problem.

Good Luck

I wouldn’t worry about it.  I have to cut the bottom off and plate my scatter shield for clearance issues. Tony

Charles, Thanks, I found it easier this way to assemble the car.  The hard part is anticipating the future needs and planing for it. Tony

thanks guys, didn't think it would be an issue since they time out, just wanted to hear some opinions/experiences. I'll call it good.

Earl Wooden wacked off the bottom of his scattershield in his liner just as Tonys diagram shows. I believe he did it by mounting it to a strong back, did the cut, and welded in the plate bringing it back to the original rigidity and strength. Obvoiusly this allow for a smaller flywheel/clutch combo. I looked at his rebuild at an inspectors meeting which was held in his/Walkeys hanger a few years back.

The key in doing this is to maintain the integerity of the scattershield and the alignment of the transmission to it; be sure to recheck the centering and parallel of the engine/trans surfaces eventho it should not have moved...Good luck..................JD
