Nancy and I have a room reserved at the Pine Acres. But -- will we race bike 439? Only maybe -- it was showing early signs of tired engine at World Finals, so we might let it rest 'til Todd can freshen it over the next few months - or we might hear Todd tell me to wring its neck and see what it'll do with the Bonneville salt still on it. Time will tell. But we intend to be at Maxton.
-
As much as Jon and Nancy have been on the road one would think they are Nomads or Gypsy's. They should buy into a motel chain for the discounts. It was great to see them at speed week and for all they do. Nancy tried very hard for the red hat, just not her year but she did real good on the salt. :-)
-
We will be there just trying to get to the other end under power..

I will be there,
Vicky is 50 miles away getting new headers built,, should be done in time.
Hope to pick her up by Sunday afternoon, that will give me a few days to do pre race inspection and load up.

I think Donna & I will try to go. LOL

Looking forward to seeing everybody again before snow sets in. No place else I'd rather be for the weekend.

You better be there!!!! :-D Tell Donna to pack some race legal boots.... just in case! ;) If Nancy & Slim haven't sold the rest of my Bonneville gear and remember to leave it in the trailer to make the journey to maxton I've got the rest covered.
Todd, Josh & I will be there with a bunch of riding gear & a mixed batch of bikes! We'll be running whatever we bring and we'll know what we're bringing Thursday afternoon when we leave!

Sorry, I will be in Brazil.......if that Visa ever gets here.......looking for Vincent parts??????
Many of the law in S. America used Vincents for patrol duty......they are still laying around.....and also the "spare" engines.........Hey, I may want to build a double engine powered Vincent streamliner....Oh
sorry, that has already been done ...........................................................................................

I really wanted to be there but neither of the car owners / drivers can make it. I spent sooo much time putting suspension on the Lakester for Maxton and never made it down there this year. LOL! Car is completely ready to go too!

Deb, the "Slim-mobile" should arrive at Pine Acres by Thursday late afternoon or so. I'll try to remember to leave your leathers out of it to maximise the inconvenience to you.
I spent this morning with the guy that'll install the outdoor wood boiler at our house, so by the time you and Todd visit in February we'll have plenty of heat on tap. This pile is about 20 x 18 feet and five or six feet tall. It's all dried hardwood -- mostly maple. Think it'll be enough to keep us warm and Nancy dressed in skimpy clothes around the house? Here are a few shots of the pile:

I still don't know if we'll run the 15R -- haven't preregistered, and need to discuss the bike before we decide to run it down the track. As for Ransom -- hey, he's no threat! And if he does somehow manage to wrest the record away from SSS -- hey, we all need at least one appearance of our name in the books, right?
And finally -- for those of you that were ar WF this year -- do you recognise this red-yellow-green whirly thing? It usually lives on our front deck -- where it is now. Good tho have it back at home.

Just pulled the Vicky back in my shop... The new headers are now on and they sound even meaner than the others... A bit deeper at idle and man does the engine rev better now. Fixing to start on the pre race inspection process. I know several of the changes we made are for driver safety and others are for better handling and the headers are for more speed. I am looking forward to a nice 2/3 throttle pass to see how the changes feel.
I am over at the Clinton Inn,,, Robbie see you there....
SSS.... Please don't forget my bumper stickers... the trailer needs some stickers !!!!
Charles.
-
We've got some of the lr.com stickers in our trailer as well. For sale of course or otherwise at Slim's discretion.
-
I've got a good supply of the stickers in the side pockets of the doors on the pickup. One of my preferred ways of disseminating the stickers is to give out one or two, gratis -- with the request that once the recipient of the sticker looks at the site -- if he likes what he sees he should go to the home page and make a donation. That has worked a bit -- and even if it doesn't bring in a big bunch of money - it helps get folks to look at the site, which, by the way, is doing well.
I'm on the side of a series of comments about how well I'm riding herd on you yay-hoos and how you have taken over the place. My reaction is this -- that things, while maybe not as mellow as they might be -- are pretty well under control, and the donations keep coming in and there's enough money in the kitty right now to pay the bills for this month.
Have any of you got serious comments about how the site is being run? Things I should (or should not) do? Lemme know, please.
By the way, my attempt at migrating the data and photos from the laptop to the big iMac - didn't work this morning. I'll try again tomorrow. First things first, though -- I made spaghetti sauce while Nancy was out with a couple of her stud-guys, and now it's time for supper for us -- me cause I'm hungry, she 'cause she needs to replenish her stock of energy.
-

Well, I thought about it for awhile and deleted it. At the time I thought it might be "over the top" and I wanted the rivalry to be more civilized. But since Jon made his most recent comment, I might just put it back … :-D

Steve/Luke/Seth..Is the red Camaro returning this meet? A young guy at work (just married) sold his Z28 and is jonesing for some photos. The camera is packed--think of the kids.

Thanks for the use of the gear, Deb. I look forward to another opportunity to ride one of your machines (maybe a little slower this time). You're the best. Hopefully, there will be the time and the means. Thanks for everything. Your the best of the bestest.

Lets hope that the god of rain, lightning, and thunder spends the weekend some where else!
-
I should get to Sleepy bear by 6pm Thursday if I95 cooperates and will likely head to the Two Guys Grille in Lumberton to watch some of the UNC/FSU football game if anyone is staying over in Lumberton. I hope to make it over to the track early Friday. Hoping that 5 miles/hours of leaf blowing isn't in my future this meet!
-
We will be there early Friday. It's been a thrash to get ready, but looking forward to it. The expectation is that Sal will also be there for the weekend. See everyone there. No rain!!!, nice tailwind Saturday.

We will be down late Friday.

We are on the road. We will stop overnight in virginia somewhere an roll in around lunchtime on thurs.

Leaving 0800 tomorrow morning. Expect to get in about 7pm ... bringing the 1000cc bike ... Joe
-
We've been here since bout noon. Been watchin the free police chases all day long lol :-D
-
And the po-lice were testing and racing around until noon today, too. Now they're gone -- but the parachutists (parashootists?) are jumping out of an airplane this afternoon.
Must be about 40-50 bikes here -- maybe three dozen cars (although I haven't looked that hard at the lines, there have been cars in the tech line all day). Looks like a good turnout no matter what, though.
We had a bit of a rain sprinkle for about 5 minutes an hour ago -- and then it stopped, right as everyone got their race vehicles covered up. We're back to gentle clouds with sun shining through and nice 10-19 mph tailwinds. I looked at the forecast just now - 50% chance of showers tomorrow with temps in the upper 70s and strong tailwinds. Sunday -- nicer, cooler, headwinds. Which do you want -- dry track or tailwind? Pick your day and run.
Driver meeting at nine (or is it eight?) and then when the safety crews get here -- we can race. I'll be riding the ZX15P this weekend -- Nancy doesn't care to do so here where stopping is a bit more challenging, so it's up to me to maintain the family honor.
Dang -- looks really dark over there upwind -- maybe I better take down the antenna for this 'puter before the lightning finds me. Later - - -
-

Looks like a good old fashion Production Bike Showdown. :-D
That is if Todd will give me the key to wheel lock ....
-
Nice turn out so far ... lot of cars as well ... We teched in 50+ bikes today ... for a time today there was a 12 mph tailwind ... see what happens tomorrow weather wise ... chance of rain showers predicted.
-
Ransom, he didn't really put a disc lock on your bike, did he? I hope the heck not -- he tried a few different locks on our bikes and none of the danged things would release from the disc when left on more than a few minutes when the humidity if over about 40%. Sure hope it stays dry out at the track tonight.
-
Good luck everyone! Wish we could be there.
-
WEll here we are -- nearly 10.30 Saturday morning. The rain isn't falling -- although it has on and off and the track is still too wet to race. Nearly everyone is out riding up and down the track in spectator cars and push trucks hoping to dry it out -- but for whatever reason, the safety crews aren't here yet and therefore there's no racing yet. Too bad -- it's about 70F and there's a nice(!) tailwind. What more can I say?
Ah, yeah -- another nice new thing is a work schedule for volunteers. This is something that's been coming for a while - and will only make for a better race event for everyone, because now there are inspectors scheduled for every hour of the event (no more getting in line and waiting and looking and waiting for an inspector. And there's also a schedule for an inspector to be in impound. No, we're not going to measruing engines yet -- but while integrity is a great thing, holding everyone closer to the rules is better for all of us. I'm happy to report that I can't spend all day in line waiting to run now -- I'm a bike tech for such-and-such hours, and so on. ECTA continues to grow and to give the East Coast folks a good place to race safely.
There's a good turnout, just like I (and Joe, and others) reported last night. Another dozen or so bikes this morning, another 18 or more cars -- looks like long waiting lines will be the order of the day. But that's not such a bad thing -- we learn lots while chatting with the others in the staging lines, right?
Enough update. I haven't taken any photos 'cause I've been inspecting -- and it's pretty cloudy and the light is only dank at best. Later, hey?
-
Sounds like some good changes Jon. I look forward to running next year. Have a safe meet and good luck to everybody this weekend
-
Will it be a written schedule, so you can see where and when everybody is to be somewhere??
Bill
-
Yes, there is a written worker schedule. I don't have a way to scan it in -- but it is written on paper.
On another note -- Guy Lombardi, a nitrous 'Busa racer from Florida (has been at Bville a few times but a first-timer here) went' 191 in the lights -- then had some issue and went down. He's in the ambulance on the way to the hospital now. No further word available. thoughts and prayers will be welcome.
Lots of fast runs today -- no doubt helped by the 14-mph tailwind. A 36-hp VW Bug went 101.
I'm in the prestage line -- don't have any other details for you. Waiting for the ambulance to return so we can resume runs. Later- - -
-
Jon, your camera will do OK if there is enough light to see.
The nice part about flat light is that there are no shadows to amount to anything.
Go ahead and take the fotos. If u aren't confident, just use the pop up flash and let it give a boost to the image.
Your army, that's staged at home, is hungry for images. That makes them impatient and demanding.
FREUD
-
Thanks for the good words, Freud, but there won't be photos today. Because of Guy's crash -- we've elected to shut down the meet for the rest of today. That is -- with the ambulance gone for a couple of hours, and with the fact that it's raining right now - and likely to continue to do so for the next few hours -- well, JoeTimney and Keith Turk asked all of the racers what we'd do -- and it was by consensus that we decided to shut it down for the day. We're heading to the barn rightnow -- with windshield wipers going (Nancy's driving, I'm typing). I was in line -- about an hour from running -- when things stopped. We're using the honor system to get back in line tmorrow in the same place and resume running at 8AM. Will run 'til four (instead of the usual two) and then will ask everyone to pitch in to pack up the race track (this is the last event of the year -- things have to be put into winter storage).
That's the update for now. Catch you later. Will send word on Guy when I hear some.
-
I know the racers will show respect for Guy.
My best wishes for his family.
FREUD
-
Hi Freud...Margaret and I will be at Maxton tomorrow. Have been vacationing for a few days in NC and area.
-
Lots of fast runs today -- no doubt helped by the 14-mph tailwind. A 36-hp VW Bug went 101.
Slim,
Just to clarify things, I believe that VW no longer is powered by the 36 hp engine that he set the record with last year, but now by the looks of it has a larger twin weber carbed engine for power, but it's still a fast bug.
I was still waiting back down the road in line, so no runs for me today, but tomorrow looks very promising.
-
Margaret and Tom...if there are any of Guy's family members at Maxton Sunday, please use your compassion and express my condolences to his
family. If it were my family, I would be so proud to have the two of you express the condolences.
Give Todd and Debbie a hug and tell them from whom it came.
They are our type of people.
Make a special effort to meet Josh. Hug him passionately for his FATHER.
Love Ya,
the old softie, FREUD

Good Morning, racers of the world. It's a brisk 52F morning here at Maxton International Airport and racetrack. Nice clear skies, brisk 10-mph or so HEADWIND. Good air, better if it'd stand still!
We're going to run 'til 4 this afternoon (per the drivers meeting this morning) to try to give all the racers every chance they can have to make some more runs this year. But here it is 20 until 9 -- no emergency rescue vehicle on duty, so we're waiting, waiting.
What wonderful news - that Tom and Margaret Bryant will be here today. I sure look forward to the times when racers we know from other venues -- come to the Maxton Monster Mile. We'll give them a fine welcome -- or if they don't make it -- we'll talk about them in their absence.
Finally -- yes, Guy Lombardi was a fine racer and a fine fellow. He'll be missed by many. May he rest in peace.
-
Hey -- we're under way! 95.187 mph for the first racer of the day -- a little bike (you betcha!).
I don't have a list of entrants so I can't tell you who's who, but Shane Stubbs just made a run at 207. And so it'll go. I've gotta work impound this morning won't be able to make play-by-play updates. See you soon.
-
Well, well, would you lookie who I see is here?

Welcome to Tom and Margaret Bryant (in case you don't know them by sight).
Runs are going along fine -- but the headwind is keeping speeds down, dang it. Ransom Holbrook ran a 189 on a 196.8 record (my record, thank you) -- and I know there's more in that bike -- so it's gotta be either headwind or him cutting me some slack. Hmmmm...
By the way, Nancy's working the records desk -- so I'll get updates now and then about who's gone fast enough. In the meantime -- Graeme Bartels (Rabbit) set an A/BFR record this morning at 191.173. Hurt the clutch, though. . .
-

Gotta go inspect a bike -- will finish later.
-
I left last night after the incident. It took the starch out of me. I was 6 vehicles back from Guy at the starting line when it happened. I decided to pack it in for this year without running. I had the good fortune to meet Guy in the staging lanes. I am sure it was already posted butn in the event it wasnt, Bob Wanna found a youtube with Guy in it from WOS in 2007.

All our thoughts and prayers are with his family ... Joe

263 A/BFALT David Haas 201.722 (No, not a two club record. Sorry, David)
I am not familar with car records at Maxton. Are there two-club minimums?
-
No, not that I know -- but in this case (I'm guesing here) there's already a record in the class -- at a higher speed.

Man, now I'm really confused! How can you set a record when there is already a higher mph record exisiting in the class?
This car stuff must be pretty complicated compared to the bike stuff! :-D
-
Oh, yeah. I guess I didn't think it through. I'll find out why it wasn't a 2 Club. I'll letcha know.
Hey, I've found out -- I heard Nancy wrong. IT was 200 club record. There -- that was easy, wasn't it?
-
Oh, yeah. I guess I didn't think it through. I'll find out why it wasn't a 2 Club. I'll letcha know.
Good deal, Jon. The car classes and designations are confusing to me; I'm sure curious.
edit.
Yes, that was easy enough! :-)
-
Helloooooo any one there?
some speeds please :-D
Bill
-
Yeah, Bill, and we're at the line and don't have lots of time, but Shane Stubbs just ran 251+ on the Scott Guthrie Racing non-alky but turbo bike - #1210. I'll get the other stuff to you soon, really.
-
Thanks SSS
Bill
Kisses to Nancy
-
Is it just me or does there seem to be so many tubo busas outta the Guthrie camp that go over 250 with Shane on em? :-D
Its getting confusing! :-P

Bill

Just got home, oh well the 2009 season is now in the books.
First of all, thoughts and prayers out to Mr Lombardi's family and all his/our racing family.
Second, a big Thank you to all of the ECTA Staff and the Volunteers that make all our events possible.
The Windy Weekend !!!
Can you say chilly wind,,, man my face is so wind burned..... Saturday the wind was blowing harder but most of the time a tail wind, sometimes a tail with a quartering cross wind,,,,
Today seemed to be mostly full on head winds at the start line but with some degree of crosswinds down track.
My first run, What a "pedal fest" The new headers sure picked up the power and that combined with new tire set up made the Vicky a handfull,, rear tires never hooked up... spun all they way to 100mph. then the darn rear end started dancing and I had to pedal again and finally just aborted and coasted thru the traps,,,oh well 106mph,, but I learned what NOT to do next time.
Second Run was much better... I launched with less RPM and the tire spin was not as wild, only spun 25 feet or so... short shifted into second at 7,000, a little tire spin, then hooked better, pulled hard in second to 8,000 then hit third and stayed hooked.. head wind / slight crossed buffeting the car to and fro,, but OK, then hit a patch and on the bounce the car rev'd 400 more R's , rear wiggled, Pedal'd a bit ,, then got back in it,,, pedal'd again, one more stab at the gas and whoosh... I was thru the lights, breathing so hard, fogged my face shield,, rolled out of the gas, now some brakes, visor up, decided I needed to go long.. cleared the track, now on return road and the nice Motor Home "Blue Birds" had a chalk Board showing 151 MPH, and a nice thumbs up,,, Thanks to our Blue Bird friends....
151.41230 mph The Vicky's fastest run to date. All with tires spinning, hopping, yawing, and a headwind.. I'll take it...
2009 is in the books,,, Hope we all keep in touch on here and on the Tuesday Night Chat's

Hey, it's late Sunday and we'reabout done tearing up the place for winter, and so I'll give you a link to the photobucket site with the Maxton October 2009 photos. You'll find about 4 dozen -- and sooner or later I'll post them into a gallery on this site -- but for now -- lots of the vehicles, the pair of motorcycle 200 MPH Club inductees, and even a team shot or four of Scott Guthrie's "children". Let me know if the link doesn't work -- I don't think you need the password to see it.
