Title: Cleaning salt off of motorcycles / electronics
Post by: jorah on September 01, 2009, 06:58:01 PM
Hello BUB Community,

We at mission motors just ran our bike at BUB.  Having a high voltage battery powered bike, we are sensitive to corrosion and very concerned about the amount of salt that we have collected on and in various places.  Can you folks offer us any conventional wisdom about the best way to remove salt from a motorcycle?  Magic fluids? Just plain water?

The team had a great first time visit this year and we are excited to return again next year!

Best regards,

Jorah Wyer

You can clean it however it will never be the same, better throw away the batteries, the motor and probably the controller, save everything else. :-D

Try salt away and the bike will need to completely be pulled apart and detailed..there is a car wash beind the Smiths at the other end of town..

Good Luck.

John

John there is lot of truth in what you say ... No matter what you do it is going to corrode.

Mission:

I say this with a smile, but I'm afraid it's close to the truth:
Measure the overall height of your bike.  Find a fast-running creek that's a few inches deeper than the top of the bike is high.  Park the bike in the creek for a couple of days.  Air dry.

Okay, so that probably won't work.  There's no easy way to keep things safe and clean other than tediously disassembly, I'm afraid to say.

So -- have you folks left the Salt?  I've spent the past few hours asking around to find you -- and having no luck.  If you're still out here -- let me know.  I'd like photos for the Gallery on this site.

I've been told the car wash below Smith's recycles their water.  Use it as a firs resort.  The best advice is flush, don't blast the ssalt off.  You don't want the brine blasted into hard to get at spots.

Salt or no salt, a teardown after a racing season is over is good insurance. Cracks, bent or broken bolts, missing fasteners, etc are easier to find if the car or bike is disassembled. It makes cleaning & inspection lots easier.

Gently Remove the body work, using a some type of lift, then gently roll NEW chassis with NEW batteries and NEW motors installed under the body, then lower the body work back on the bike.... see all done ready to go for next season. Makes cleanup easy...

The team Go Dog Go build diary shows how I tape up the Triumph.  The tape was pulled off after the meet and the salt came off with it.  The salt did not get into the electrics.  The tape prevented this.  Triumph (Hinckley) uses a special grease on their electric terminals.  This really helps.  My local auto parts shop sold me a tube.  I wore off the label and do not know the brand or exact description.

Pick the time when you run.  Usually there is a day when the salt is dry, tight, and less obnoxious.

The Triumph gets a good wash with cold running water from the top down and it is torn apart for a complete cleaning.  Usually I do not remove the engine from the frame, take off the swingarm, or pull off the triple clamps.

does it help the bikes if you powder coat as much aluminum parts (ie frame, swingarm, ets) as possible? I gues radiators are considered consumable goods.  :-D

A quick status update:

The team here at Mission elected the "complete tear down" option.  We found salt in the oddest places (inside the swingarm, inside wire bundles, etc).  We had used shielded bearings in some of our drivetrain components and actually found salt inside the bearings.  So they were replaced with sealed versions.

At any rate, thanks again for all of your forum help!

.......kaz.......are you kidding me...?....

our motor has been together for 6 years......

which included running sw a couple times then travelling over the ocean to aus, through
the outback, and lake gairdner....and back for a few
years..........ALL   WITHOUT airfiltration.........

and the pistons look new from undersides.....and almost
entire clean on top.......

must really be a salt shaker.....wow........

modification:......almost clean on top like, alittle carbon that wipes off, almost none, no salt

"""I found 1/2 inch of Salt on Top of each Piston"""

might need to adjust the squish clearance.......

and or drive through more air and less salt.......

piston to head clearance.........

internet commo not always understood by all.......

i have no interest in betting on folks stories....my bike is worth
ALOT less than yours....trust me....

....i found the idea of 1/2 of salt on top of pistons......pretty f'in crazy....

hence the statement...."are you kidding"...and ...."wow that must be a real salt shaker".........

and after 6 yrs on same engine with no salt perceptable in/on pistons....its
pretty wild to imagine 1/2 inch of salt .............

speaking out loud here since were sharing personal lsr experiences........

" I'm done arguing, and will let my performance Past,Present ,and future do the Talking."

Let's hear them future performances do the talking.  Or Talking, which is seemingly more important.  Remember the future holds an NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship, maybe a world record for 2 wheels, and even the presidency!

The future is speaking -- kinda reminds me of Criswell if anyone remembers.

If I don't stop reading the interesting subjects on this  forum I'm never going to get my bike built.....

But then again reading this thread is almost as much fun as working on the bike.....

I think I'm going to love being involved in LSR.....

Maybe we could combine the Jesse James thread and this one we could start our own LSR Reality Show.  Maybe we could name the show, "Salty Pistons, JJ, Land Louise and Kent at Galloway's Fence".

(JUST A LITTLE ATTEMPT AT HUMOR, NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE LIVING OR DEAD)

Sorry for assuming that it was gambling that took your money...being from Vegas I guess I just naturally assume that when you talk about leaving a lot of money in Nevada it's not usually for the room.

Expensive rooms in Wendover..I guess I should start saving my money if I want to go to Bonneville next year.

Glad you at least won something.

But from racing on the salt a few years and seen alot of motor tear downs, good motors and bad motors with NO filtration on them, I have only seen dustings of salt.... BS why? because I can and it bothers you more then me when someone call BS...

Kaz,

You have attacked my long time friends and fellow racers, you seem to have these ridiculous claims of losing 20 pounds in one day and having 1/2" of salt on top of your pistons after the engine still made good horsepower.

Fellow racers were trying to "semi-politely" tell you that you are wrong and you verbally attack them here on an open forum for all to see.

I am ashamed at you and your antics and will see if what you have done is enough to merit removing you from our club (SDRC) at the next meeting and placing you as a member not in good standing.

I would suggest that if you make it to El Mo this weekend that you bring a fridge, cooler, blanket, bikes and a few folks to assist you as I and my fellow racers are not interested in assisting you with your racing should you even show up.

You owe some rather large apologies (not to me) to many here and I truly wish you the best.

Please do not knock on our trailer this weekend and good luck with your racing.

This is sort of off the current topic.  Forgive me.

An earlier post on this thread mentioned that radiators may be damaged beyond salvage by salt.  Radiators cost a lot of $$$.

I dug up some pictures that show how I use water to get the salt out of a bike chain.  See Team Go Dog Go build diary.  Although I have not tried it, immersion in water seems like a good idea for salt-packed radiators.  This dunking method works well if it is done right away.  It does not work item that are already corroded.

I have always had problems with salt corrosion on the Triumph oil radiator.  This year I sprayed it with ACF50 anti-corrosion spray a few days before we left home.  Usually I spray the fairing but not the radiator.  I did not wash the salt off of the Triumph until we got home days after the event.  The salt washed off of the radiator and there was no corrosion.  The anti-corrosion spray worked.

Great information thank you, I never have a problem with the radiators on our Busa powered cars and bikes however I have a simple fif.

I throw them away after I see the cooling fins start to deteriorate from being on the salt.

I do carry a spare in the extra parts pile in case of a a problem however I do like your fix.

Thanks Wobbly and good luck

Please make sure that you do not have 1/2" inch of salt on top of your pistons however, I am sure it would still run however not the best

Ran a forward facing carb on a two stroke about 6" behind the front wheel with no air cleaner. Lots O Salt all over the carb. Took out a spark plug on one run, found a few nicks on the piston in tear down, zero accumulation or signs of actual salt on the piston.
