We can we start seeing some pics and updates on the event.... They should be on the salt today.... Inspections... Pics... Who are the players for top time? Wheeler should be there running the EZHook Streamliner, I think Ack Attack is just on display... Aussies are there in full force im sure Richard Assen is likely top time for siton... Predictions???? Assen 262 mph ??? Wheeler 367 mph??? Just thought I would start the thread for updates.... Im working on the bike for WOS, just dreamin about being there... Info needed is Manning planning on running or is he holding out for the Private event.... I would think he would run the streamliner... but that depends on when Cris Carr gets there...

shoot...i was hoping to for some info....
hey Jon W. how the heck are you and things at BUB......are you
going....are you there.....are you doing volunteering with BUB staff..like
you have done with SCTA....?...etc....

I'll be out in the morning with my cameras. We'll start gettin some live and direct coverage purty quick.
-
Nancy and I rolled into town late this afternoon and will head for the salt in the morning. As he's already said, Ray will be taking photos and we'll be trying to post them in the albums here. Still having troubles making the thing work -- so the pictures might be on the Forum.
Rocky said that the Ack bike will be here for display, and it's already been said that Richard Assen is going to be a real contender for the top speed sit-on bike. We met a couple of racers in Smith's a little while ago -- said they'd all be at the Salt first thing tomorrow.
Nancy and I don't race at Bub's -- will at WoS in a few weeks, but we're here now just to help those of you at home enjoy the event as much as we can provide for you.
Let's go racing!
-
Since some racers are not attending and Richards bike is running better than ever yes he should take the $2,500.00 for the fastest sit on bike, I know after he saw the trophy from last year he is more interested in taking the FIM record and I wish him and his team the best of luck. Sounds like all the cards are in his favor.
Get it Richard and team A-Ward!
John
-
John,
last I looked it was only $1500 for fastest sit on bike. And $1500 for fastest bike of the meet.... I thought it was a larger number a week ago, looks like it changed at last minute.... Way down from the 1st year when it was $10000 for top siton bike of meet.
Jon
-
..a few weeks ago it was listed as 2500...
a fourfold depreciation...in 4 yrs....no stimulus
package help im guessing....
oh well.....
an opportunity to go fast.....
that is priceless......
i hope Bak and crew go real fast with the 3 wheeler........that
would be cool.........
does he have an on-site interpreter...?...
latest check of event schedule shows racing should have
started a few minutes ago at 0730....
Joe

BUB 7 will be running this week and at the Cook private meet. Chris is going to be in town Sunday night and be ready to race Monday morning.
We have new tires (rated for 450mph) and two motors, so we are ready to go fast- Eric
-
thats the BEST news ive heard in a looong time.......
......competition is such a great thing.......
-
WEll, well, boys and girls -- Bub's has started with the first runs. It's about 10.10AM out here and runs got underway about fifteen or twenty minutes ago. Ray's working with the photos -- to see how they'll get from his camera through this 'puter into the site -- but we're at it.
The driver's meeting ended about 9.30 or so, followed by a survey of the course by the FIM-entered vehicles. That parade was led by Team Bozeman -- in a tribute to Cliff Gullett.
Mike Akatiff has the Ack bike on display, but isn;'t planning on running it, he says -- unless maybe they do elect to run. He said Denis Manning reported some big cracks in the course that'd make it less than desirable for a fast liner. We'll see as the days progress. There's certainly more water at Land's End than there was at SpeedWeek. Not a lot -- but it was bone-dry thee weeks ago. Now there are puddles for the first few hundred feet. Take a look for yourselves.
The pits are crowded -- looks like hundreds, certainly more than dozens of bikes. We'll get some real stuff to you soon.
-
And the mud claims another one!! :-D

...and more -
Man that second picture above looks like some wet salt to me, anybody else thinking holy f*ck....
Jon
-
Don't you imagine that it's from the End of the Road to the pits that
"painted" it that color?
FREUD
-
...interesting....
""Manning reported some big cracks in the course that'd make it less than desirable for a fast liner""
...wonder what it will be like for semi-fast sit-on bikes.....?....
we should know more soon enough.....
great turnout it sounds.....
yeah that second pic looks like rode in.....

Here are a few bikes in impound. This group of four left just as I got there -- headed for FIM return runs. If and when they make the returns I'll get some speeds. No data -- the impound logs only show time of arrival -- not speed.
Interesting clothes on this Ninja 250, hey?

Is wheeler there yet? What is status on Vincent Liner? Assen run yet? Just some stuff curious about...
JonAmo
-
Jon, you should be here -- you've got more questions than I've got answers. Remember -- this isn't an SCTA or USFRA event -- I'm not as familiar with how things run. We're down at the "Mountain" course south start line and just got shooed back to allow return run bikes to come through. We just got a wave from Scott Stites as he headed towards the "international" course start -- and Fireman Jim shouted his howdy from mountain course pre-stage. I'm still gathering names of who else is here. Back to the pits -- there I can try to get you some more answers.
-
The little Ninja #235 ran a 102.6 on his return run, the #228 did 94.53, #5151 went 94.31 down, 102.26 return -- on a '55 BSA.
There's about 4 mph wind from north to south -- you can see it on the 5151 bike's speeds.

Listening to the fast bikes -- lots of wheelspin on the internat'l course. Fastest bike of the meet so far just ran a 193.8 -- Don Mills, bike 196. Someone else out there right now slippin' and slidin'.

Lucille Dunn just ran 107.7 on her Blast. 50 runs so far today - since starting was tardy because of the 8AM driver meeting. I'm going to shut this off and go shoot some photos in
inspection scrutineering.
-
...THANKS JON W.......!!!!!
NICE pics....and so cool for the feedback.....
its VERY cool......to hear this dialogue on Landracing.com.......
-
Scott Stites went through tech and had to strip the Busa completely to run in the naked class, the front fender and rear tail section had to go. So far today, he has run 169mph on what he said is very wet salt. A lot of wheel spin, but 6mph over the current record! He is currently in impound and should be making a back-up run soon.
-
Sam should be getting there tonight. They were supposed to leave at 5:00AM today. I was over at his shop yesterday AM and they were working hard finalizing things. It is amazing how calm Sam can be when there is a BIT of work to do!!
I dropped off the latest nNovia on-board video recorder and we finalized the harness and wiring. I hope he has a chance to run.....salt dries out etc.. And I hope his on-baord video is flawless this year.
Fingers crossed Sam.
-
Hi guys
Sat in a cold England today and wishing I was on the salt..... next year will be there,
I wonder if anyone has any info on Tom Mellor and his 750 Trident I think he's running number 240
Any news appreciated.
Have fun and keep it upright........................
John
-
Slim some updates on the roadsters please
-
Scott Stites just ran a back-up at 173 mph. He is in impound for measurement for the record!!
-
Mike, Nancy's still busy telling about how she had to ask for help with the kickstand. Roadster photos will follow that.
Good news, one and all -- your webguy (that's me) has finally figured out how to put photos into the gallery. There are a half-dozen or so there now -- will be more as the day goes past.
Other stuff:
Richard Assen says that about the only new thing on the bike is a new radiator and intercooler (I think he said they're both all-new). The old rad. got a bit beat up by the salt and a raplacement was made available. He says they won't crank up the boost or anything (at least not at first). First run for him will be in the morning (assuming the salt stays as slick as it is today).
Hazy on the horizon -- can barely see the highway from the pits (about where the Speed Week pits were).
Denis Mannins is reported to be running in the morning. I asked Mike Akatiff about that - he hadn't heard it, but says that if Denis does -- then I guess the Ack bike will, too. We'll see.
-
Denis is gonna lay the new number down..... Ack wont sit back and watch...... Sams gonna shut em up.... Rocky will come out on top..... Damn it! i wish my new liner was done.... would be fun to be out there playing with those boys.....
kent

Randy
Scots bike has a 180 in it..... if he doesn't pull it out of it, he'll never live down the verbal assaults when he gets home....
kent
-
Kent, Scott says it's great to know even though he's 1000 miles away from your ass, he still has to deal with you! :-D
-
I have good info that course is very wet - damp... I would be very suprised if the liners will make any hard passes due to the condition. And the fast siton turbo bikes will suffer alot of speed,. I would put money on it that if the course isn't perfect Sam wont chance any runs with the wet course and the aluminum front wheel. He is just that kind of guy.
I would also say if course isnt the best that Ack will step back and wait the couple weeks for a better course during the private meet. The Ack crew learned about sub standard course in the past and I dont think he will make the same mistake twice.
thanks for the updates JonW.

I guess bike 1737 doesnt have to be within the rule of
"8.B. SEAT/ TAIL SECTION
Seat/tail section streamlining must meet the following criteria.
Streamlining must not extend beyond the rear edge of the rear tire
more than 8 inches. No streamlining beyond the rear axel is
permitted to be lower than the top rim of the rear wheel."
And bike number #228 must not have to run within the criteria of 2.I or rule 7.D
"2.I. NUMBER/CLASS IDENTIFICATION *
Motorcycle number and class identification on both sides of the
motorcycle are required for each entrant and must be of contrasting
colors to that of the motorcycle. Numbers must be reserved with
BUB Racing. Where used, number plates must be a minimum of
7” high and 8” wide and the numbers are to be 3” high and 1”
wide. Plates must have rounded corners. Numbers can be painted
directly on the motorcycle/ streamliner if number plates cannot be
attached and must meet same criteria for number plates for size
requirements. Numbers must be in full view and not blocked by the
rider when in the riding position. Numbers/class identification
must be changed on the motorcycle when a change in rider/class
occurs."
7.D. FENDERS
Front and rear fenders may be removed. Generic replacement type
fenders may be substituted and may not extend beyond the centerline of front or rear axle. Elongated seat may act as rear fender and is subject scrutineering."
Just an observation... They have had a history of allowing illegal bikes to run in classes in which they were illegal. Not trying to be a poor sport but rules are the rules.

That sucks for Scott, I reread the rule for the AMA here.
7.G. OPEN CLASS *
Open class motorcycles do not permit streamlining. Streamlining is
anything that has the perceptible purpose of directing, controlling
or limiting the airflow around the motorcycle and/or rider, or are
placed to reduce aerodynamic drag (fenders excluded).
Maybe JonW can get by Scotts pits and find out what the heck to issue was.

WE caught up with Scott in impound. Here're a few photos. i'll go ask for details about just why he's got to farkle with the fender. Drew Gatewood was standing there measuring the bike -- I didn't have the 'puter or would have asked then.
-
Attn: Guy Caputo! This photo's for you:
-
Hey JonW find out if all four cylinders had to be measured?????? Tell Scott congrats on the record and way to go.... Now by looks of the salt pickup on the front of the bike I would say its pretty damp out there.
Jon
-
Attn: Guy Caputo! This photo's for you:
Thats the Turbine bike that was out at World of speed I think two or three years ago... Fun Group of guys... MIght have went in the 150 range, they hard tons of problems sucking in Salt to turbine... Curious to know what they might have done to fix that problem.
JonAmo
-
Scott sez:
NO streamlining behind the rider in "naked" A or M -- so off came the tailsection. I asked the inspector "What about a number plate back there?" and he invited me to protest the bike that's got one. "No", I said, "I'm not racing here today." So that's why the tail had to come off. As for the front -- they wouldn't let him run the fender since it has skirts that protect the forks. He's going to install the fender but first window the fork area -- slots in the skirts so the air can be assumed to go straight into the forks, not be deflected around it. They were measuring all cylinders while I was there, by the way.
-
JonW excellent thanks for superb information.... AMA NAtional Records require the 4 cyclinders to be measured, however the WORLD RECORD FIM santioning body only requires two cylinders???? Interesting..... Keep up the good work JonW, ill keep you busy :) :) :) :)
So now we know you can point out the illegal aspects of bikes in impound and they will let them go... Sweet...

Just talked to Max. They've been waiting at the zero for a couple of hours due to the wind at 9 mph. He said they wouldn't chance it today but would be out there early in the morning hopefully to make a run.
Mike hadn't been planning to run at the Bub Meet, he was just going to be there with the liner.

Tom Mellor is pitted just down from where Nancy and I are sitting. He had just picked up the bike from a bump from the loading ramp -- dented the left lower front bodywork a tad. Here're a few photos of the uninjured areas. Look at that back tire!

Keep up the good work with the camera the shots are fantastic for us guys that can't make it.....

OK. We don't know the actual size of the number plate but assuming it was legal required size where should it be placed? In front of the shock could easily be covered by the riders leg and not legal. Where's the proper place to put it on that bike?

Rob Hassaay is the rider listed for 1018 HD.

On the fuel tank, below the fuel tank, by the clutch cover... Basically ANYWHERE its not illegal and provides an aero advantage...

did find out Max was second in que to run the Vincent bike but they returned back to pits since wind was not letting up. So they are second in line to go in the morning... Go MAX and Vincent Crew hope all goes well in the morning...
Thanks for the updates JonW.

I know Rob, I hope he will be OK, I see him at all of the M/C shows for the last 15 years..I am sure he was a riding a V-twin that belongs to a rather large HD aftermarket distribution company. He is a little guy..
Best wishes Rob..

It's so hazy right now that we can barely see Floating Mountain. Looking east -- towards the interstate -- it looks like a science fiction movie set -- you can't see the end of the world. 88 degrees. Internat'l course now open again.
Bike 1199 on the int'l course -- Jeff Tobey.
He's at the 2 mile, ran 174.9 earlier today.
Wind about 5-8 from the north.
At the 4 mile -- under power, good speed built up -- in the mneasured mile. 177.1mph
-
Did Scott tear down or just seal engine?
-
Best wishes to Rob from us!!!

Hmmm.. see I have trouble visualizing where that number plate could go and be legal while not causing a potential safety issue for the rider. Seems anyplace on that bike that would not cause a safety issue would then be an aerodynamic advantage... that's a "normal" mounting position, I wouldn't contest it as long as I could do the same.
-
They were measuring as I watched. Dipstick being poked into cylinders.
-
164.4 return run, 156.6 down run, Kerry Alter(?) on a ZX10R - on the internatt'l course
-
Ah, the excitement of Bub's -- bikes running on the international course (the far course) on a return run (left to right past the pits) - are turning and cutting across the mountain course - while it's in operation!
Bike 1987 return run starting Aaron Wilson on '08 Sporty. 175.048 down run. Sounds strong -- a little wheelspin, though.
Run ended -- hard to believe -- the announcer says this run was ALSO 175.048. Glen, can you help us do the math on what his average speed would be? Or do we first have to know the time elapsed?
-
Bike 241, Bob Duncan next, on return run, left to right,on int'l course. 1971 Triumph Trident. 112.6 down run. 119.8 return speed
Bike 1987 -- 170.938 return run. Gee, that's a little easier to believe. Glen, disregard earlier query.
-
Richard Assen, bike 519, on the int'l course now. I'm surprised, after what they said they'd be doing -- waiting 'til morning. Whatever -- 9 mph headwind for a down run, but maybe it's some test-n-tune time, hey?
Boogeying right along -- just passed the pits.
Mile: 185.553
Top speed of event so far - earlier today -- 205.5 -- not Assen. Ann'cr didn't tell us who did that run. Sorry
-
I see Mike Geokan's "Bullet Project" is there. This can be one super fast harley bike. The aluminum body is just amazing. He ran last year at Speedweek, goosed it a little much off the line and fell off of it at a slow rate of speed and broke a collar bone. A square profile front tire was an issue with steering and they had Nate Jones do some shaving and forming of the tire for a rounder profile. Its based on a 139" Orca Turbo Motor with the help of RB Racing. It is one to watch out for.

Jon, they were having another "scrutineering" issue with this bike when I took the photo. Is the front wheel at least 25% open? - was the question. The bike techs were going to measure the holes and do the math as I walked away.
-
Werner Miller is just entering scrutineering with his 150 Honda. The rider is 14 years old. Team GoDogGo. First time here for the lad.

End of racing coming up soon, according to the clock. Lots of bikes in lines -- don't know what'll happen at shutdown time.
5511 Leslie Porterfield on the course -- on a CBR 1000. Slippin' and slidin' along -- wow, sounds like a handful for her. 177.661 mph.
-
Uncle Jimbo and his straight brother, Ron, stopped by and asked me to say howdy to everyone.
It's getting near the end of sunlight -- and didn't there used to be moiuntains over there towards Wendover? Boyoboy, the haze is thick. Still running, though. Registration is closed 'til morning.
Next run on mountain course: Bike 2006 == 127.239 mph Yasu Watanbe, Huntington Beach.

Want to thank everyone for the daily updates for those of us that couldn't make it there this year. Sounds to me that the salt is just as dangerous was it was in 2007? Would you say that was the case?

Let's see if I can put these here. They're Ray's, from down at the start line.

Jon, speeds are calculated for FIA & FIM by the ET. SCTA - BNI and USFRA use the speeds that are converted. They are never rounded up.

Two bikes -- Rudy, the Swiss fellow on a 'Busa, and a ZX10R, just each ran about 180 or so. I guess that's about all the course will handle now.

........the build up on that 14 rim is scary.....
i hope he got that by doing some extra driving around after
off the course.....
great reporting Jon W. KUDO's......
as everyone knows....at home....even the seemingly littlest
things can be HUGE to see and know about....
-
Jon, pictures are fine, keep it up.
-
Terry Moriairty 1819 on the int'l course, 1957 Triumph, slowing and turning out.
-
If the build up on that 14 wheel came from "on course" speed, it seems to me
that no streamliner will be running until the salt is better.
Shadow boxing is one thing but putting your rider in a 'liner and expecting anything but trouble is
ludicrous. I don't think that the minds that control those rockets would want any part of it.
Joe, do u agree?
FREUD
-
Well -- remember that this event allows riders to ride from pits to start and finish to pits and so on -- so maybe the buildup isn't from the course. Maybe -- but I've seen quite a few bikes with lots of salt all over the place. Take Scott's bike, for instance -- so much on his helmet that he had to open it to see where he was going -- got both eyes full of salt, decided that wasn't a good idea, so tried to wi[e the visor off while moving (I HOPE he was off the run when doing that).
A few bikes still running, but we'll be done soo, I hope. I'm hungry - so is Nancy. Still have to visit Rice Bros. to get the run logs. Hope they're compatible with this MacBook. By the way, Delvene says she'll email me the record lists either later in the evening - or the next morning. I promise I'll post 'em as soon as I get them -- don't think I'LL hold out on you.
-
Thanks for the coverage Jon
That A-Ward bike is beautiful!
-
It's been a great first day of racing, thanks for the coverage JonW! Hope everything is okay with the rider who went down. The haze could be smoke haze from the fires in California. Hope all you racers from that end of the state are safe.
Stay safe everyone,
Lynda

We have a large fire in Utah as well lots of smoke north of Pine Mountain and Millford area.

OMG, this one is adorable. Who's the baby?

I don't know Deb, but I'm sure he's a future record holder!! :-D
(Need some baby bottle cheers here!)
Lynda
-
...Glen i figured that much likely came from some extra riding
around........
...thats one of the many things i like about scta...not allowing race
vehicles to run under their own power except on course or getting off (couple
different puns in that one)........
that much build up is quite impressive.....can imagine how much other
salt ended up in other undesired places......
im sure Denis has a decent grip on the situation.....
thats SOOO cool that Kim got the Aussie 750 out there and went over 190 on that
course......
SSS please tell Greg Waters with the aussie team....nice thinking having the girls
do the shake down runs....only problem is....their so dang tough.....as evidenced by
her run..........aaaahhhhhh......aussie chicks........none better......Kim is a great example
......as is/was the really gregarious (theres a pun) one at the Two Club banquet at SW....
please tell her hi as well if she stayed stateside........they know how to live life....

Rocky said the salt as much drier today than yesterday. He expects some good times to come in around Wednesday. He is set up with the bike stripped and the body on the tarp showing off the changes from last year. He says he has another 200 HP to play with over last year's output. He's sitting there like an old time Knight in Armor with his trusty steed nearby just waiting for a challenger to joust with.
There's been some salt growth since two weeks ago. The areas where it has been driven over since then are not bad but i noticed lots more salt on the inside top of my truck fenders as I rinsed it off tonight. There's about double the amount I picked up at Speedweek. There's a lot more on the soles of my shoes too.

A 50 CC Aprilia liner.

Just visiting with friends ...
-
I got in two runs on the short course today. I got 197 on the last run but the fishtailing and tire spin were pretty severe. I was constanly backing off on the throttle.
But the high point of the day was when I took my daughter into impound and then to have her record certified. She ran 131 on her qualifying run, then 137 on the return run. This was on my Honda CX500T which can't go that fast.
Here she is. Leslie Porterfield watch out.

As told 2 me by The Master of Speed  it Looks Like another BAGGER Went down, and I Fore 1{ in the Name of SAFETY } Think that there is a Problem inherent with them :?? I've only drag raced 1 so The salt+ a Bagger is a combo I'm not familiar with, but as Obiwan Say's{IT'Z NOT RIGHT!} :-o . To Much aero Drag or Rider instability maybe? Or bad salt-Wet Course, and New Riders = Bad New :|?
Sure do miss Not being there !Keep up the Great Work, and Hope 2 See you All soon.

The 205 was Greg Watters on one of our 750's. He was doing shakedowns on the methanol tune and running on an open record.Fastest pass so far with these conditions.
I ran 186 and 196 on the naked 750 on another open record, mid day salt was better.Tried a late run but could only get 187,lots of wheelspin on all runs.Body going on today and Mick will have a go.
-
Jim,
Congrats to you both!

Anything going on out there on the salt this AM. Riders meeting in progress??
-
We're down at the south end of the international long course. Richard Assen's warming his bike (That was his little son on the bike in yesterday's photo, by the way). Max's liner is sitting over there with a bunch of folks around it, and Don Angel is suiting up and putting on the helmet. I'll post and get a photo or two. 65F and no wind right now.
-
Thanks Jon. And thanks for the excellent coverage. Really appreciated by those who can't be there. Great work!!
-
Thanks for the updates,
Does anyone know who is running the red and white 125cc streamliner? Any reports on its speed yesterday?
Thanks
Scott
-
Max's bike is away -- and dammit, the batteries in the camera just went dead -- during the send-off.
Don is building speed - after a bit of drama wandering as he left the line.
Chute is out. Didn't get through the mesured mile. Turning off.
-
Budfab is trying to push start. Assen is readying to go. Yesterday's Assen run (189) was slow because of an intermittent in the tether switch -- cutting off and back on during the run.
Don Angel in the Lambky liner is still on the track, not moving -- waiting for him to clear it so they can run Assen and Budfab.
By the way, Richard's son is seven-month-old Luke. He thanked me for your interest, ladies and gentlemen. He told me that two years ago they brought their daughter to the salt for their first visit -- so the idea of bringing youngsters continues. Break 'em in early, hey?
Bob (webelf for us) says he got the run logs from yesterday -- but I haven't yet looked to see if and where he posted 'em. I'll check -- and if you find 'em on here, let us all know where to look. I know that Rice Bros. explained that because of course starts and holds -- the sequential run numbers reset to zero a few times -- don't let that stump you when you find 'em.
-
Good luck Richard and Buddafab...
-
Assen's on the bike, engine running. Engine off. Engine running and he's away.
Measured mile: 226.482 fastest run of the meet so far.
1081 157.423 in the mountain course.
I'm looking for the run logs from yesterday. And Delvene hasn't sent me the record sheets from yesterday yet.
-
Jon, I haven't been able to locate any results from yesterday anywhere. Keep up the good posting.

WE talked with Rob Hassay and got some pictures -- proof of why we wear leathers and helmets. He's fine -- well, walking with a bit of a sore leg limp, I see, but okay and pleased that so many of you folks were asking of him after his incident yesterday. The bike's not so good -- needs lots ofplastic and some metal-straightening.
-
Hy-vo chain troubles -- maybe? Stainless says this is what they're looking at right now on the Lambky bike. They're doing surgery -- hope they don't have a ruch SLC trip in their immediate future.
The Buddfab bike stopped part way through the run earlier -- remember I said that? Well, John reported that they had mounted a idfferent rear tire -- and it wouldn't let the bike stabilize and so the thing wobbled back and forth. I hear the on-bike camera video is a real right-lrft-right-left-etc adventure.

Did I tell you of the hassle Tom Mellor had this morning? Lit up the bike just fine, warmed it for a few seconds, his crew let him go -- and about five feet away that hard/skinny rear tire put the bike on its side. They righted it and he went off -- handling looked evil. They didn't announce a speed for his run.

How did that blue Kaw do? Looks like same bike that was at SW.

Maybe the Strasburgs in Salt Lake can help, racers from speedweek went there for help and they are Bville racers and drag racers. Don't have # but somebody does. Its worth a phone call.

Six States on 17th South near 3rd West in SLC does good clutch work. Strasburgs are in Lindon, UT, 35 miles south of SLC. Good machine shop but I don't know about clutch work there.

Just found this in the pre-entry list:
566 Baling Wire Racing Delisa Bartholowmew 500-MPS-PBG Honda 1983
567 Baling Wire Racing Don Pearsall 1350-APS-BF Suzuki 2003
All racers deserve a name! So the daughter is Delisa and if I'm understanding correctly this IS a factory turbo pushrod engine. Very cool! (yeah I had to go look it up! 8-) )
Congrats again on the record!

The primary chain that links the two motors together broke. Because of clearance issues it took out the cases also. So they are done... Ack Attack crew offered beer.
Sam Wheeler is on the salt, he was at the far end checking things out...

Okay, we're almost back on the Salt. Did a quick run to lunch and supplies. Wind was east at 3-5 aas we passed the windsock on I-80. I'll see what there is when we're at Land's End.
If you are enjoying the photos that Ray the Rat is taking (and I'm posting) -- please consider sending a donation to the site (use the Paypal button on the home page) and earmark it for Ray. I'll make sure he gets it now (not once we get home) to defray his personal costs for the work he's doing. He just called to say he's got more photos for me -- I'll post either on the Forum or in the Gallery (there are new ones there this morning, as well as yesterday's).
For that matter -- you're always welcome to say thanks with a donation to the site. Nancy and I appreciate them -- but, to tell the truth, the nice words from you are darned near as good as money (just not as negotiable at a store).
Mosre posts coming.
-
We just went to the int'l course long start line -- not many people, no Sam Wheeler. We're heading for the pits now.
Not much wind out here, either. Salt is better -- we're on the crunchies on the access road, and it's drier than it was just six hours ago when we got here. 78F on the truck thermometer.
-
The primary chain that links the two motors together broke. Because of clearance issues it took out the cases also.
JonA,
I thought this was still Max's fabbed gear drive in there linking the motors together? Or is it a standard (or as standard as it gets for Max anyway) chain setup to the trans and you mean linking the rear motor to the clutch?
Okay, we're almost back on the Salt. Did a quick run to lunch and supplies.
Lunch? I didn't know we were allowed to leave our computers to go to lunch?

So sorry to hear of Max breaking. Lets hope this isnt the end of the road for his liner.
-
Just on the radio:
The #666 liner (ominous number - don't think I'd choose that one, but whatever they wanna do is okay, I guess) -- anyway, he was making a long course return run and the chute deployed in the first mile -- pulled the bike over and it barrel rolled a few times. The rider is out and cursing (I imagine) -- but okay.
Todd -- lunch breaks are allowed. Don't tell me you didn't take one.
-
Some more Ray photos just handed to me. I'll put 'em in the Gallery. We're sitting at the entrance to inspection/impound -- watching quite a few bikes still arriving. Runs are going along -- no sign in the staging lines of any of the 'liner bikes.
-
NARider,
You are correct on your statement... But it did take out part of the cases....
JonW
Any pictures of the #666 liner, not familiar with it...

Har har, thanks for the great coverage. My work output has fallen off drastically, really since about 3 weeks ago.

I can't carry the 'puter and walk through the pits and get photos and data -- so that's why the interruption. I got photos of the 666 -- will put 'em up, but first -- it's a 1000cc Norton engine in there. The tilt sensor got too much vibration and fired the chute during the run-up -- the chute deployed and pulled the bike over. They're repacking the chute right now.

Don Pearsall just ran 217.514 mph

Here are some of what we just took in the pit stroll of ours.
Scott's bike with aero mods -- this cutaway fender passed tech:
Other stuff includes Scott, Cami, and Sienna, enjoying her first visit to the Salt:

You were asking about this bike -- with the questionable front wheel. They got it okayed in tech -- Bob Bahn, the rider, made a pass but couldn't shift. It's a custom tranny -- looks like bent shift forks. They're working. . . Note the nice uphosltery -- not your regular race bike seat.

By the way, Don Pearsall's 217 was the second-fastest run of the meet so far -- Richard Assen's 226 (wasn't it the speed, earlier?) is still fastest.
-
Don, good run. Keep after it.
-
They've just announced that no FIM wannabees are going to be allowed to start after 4PM (a little less than an hour from now). They sound like they're going to try to shut down at 6 tonight (the FIM 2-hour window, you know).
Denis Manning is at the long end of the Int'l course, ready to run, waiting for the wind to subside. I see about 6-10 from the east here in the pits - that'd be from right to left as the riders head to the north.
-
Sounds like Don hurt something on the bike -- smoke coming out after that 217 run. I'll see if I can find out anything. Int'l course on hold.
-
Don and his Yellow submarine.. :-D
Get em Don..
Dons bike ran 229.822 at El Mirage a few years ago and got his nephew Mark in to the Dirty 2's
John
-
Lookie here -- I found Sam, Terry, bike, and so on. Sounds like they're in no mood to go run now -- maybe in the mnorning. Sam is saying how the salt isn't all that good yet -- but llows that yes, it's better than yesterday. Better in the morning? We'll find out. Still nothing from the Bub bike at the far end -- still breezy out there -- flags are showing about 6-10 mph down the course (right-to-left, that is).
-
Manning is getting ready to run... They had troubles in the pits getting the bike to run... Found bad fuel and debris in the fuel system plugging up injectors etc... Got it figured out and are waiting to run very soon.
Sam Wheeler has bike apart in the pits messing with electronics... He says he will run on Tuesday....
Ack Attack says 0% chance they will run this meet. But we already knew that....
JonAmo
-
Jonw,
Good picture on sam's bike. This is a FIRST ever that I have ever seen. Him pulling the chassis out of the body to work on it at the salt... Usually when it gets that bad he takes it home... Were you able to find out what they were trying to accomplish or what was wrong at the moment?
JonAmo
-
They're programming. I didn't ask what -- Sam and Terry just arrived with fresh hamburgers. I'll let 'em eat and go back there.
In the meantime -- Team Arrow, the #1150 'liner, is working on the periscope. Tech won't let them race with the 90 degrees of peripheral vision, so they're doing some work to try to get it closer to the "required" 120 degrees. A little less than that may pass, they say -- but they're doing work on it. I couldn't get a good shot of the 'scope -- it's way on top of the canopy, up in the air.
-
These photos aren't great -- shooting in Pearsall's screen pit didn't let me do well. The bad news -- Don held out a bolt and said "This is a rod bolt."
Looks like at least one rod. Lots of shrapnel in the belly pan. Their week is over. . .I think.
-
Terry Kizer says they're just finishing the installation of the RacePak logger. The thing's been in there for a while -- but they didn't finish the program/download. They're hanging the bike out of the body awaiting tech to visit to inspect -- figure they'd have to have the bodywork off anyway. Still waiting for tech. Terry Kizer says they'll put fuel in it in a little while and look for fuel leaks -- but won't run now -- too slick. Maybe in the morning, maybe Wednesday. Other than the Racepak -- nothing new since last fall's shootout. They had the handling (going right) issue then -- don't know if they've found the problem. And they want to get in a run to get some information on the front wheel -- but wet salt won't tell them what they wanna know.
In other stuff -- #134, an electric sidecar bike, just stunned the crowd by running a 39.26 mph. Dang, Kent -- don't sweat it that they'll take the 'car off and run for your number.
-
Great stuff Jon, thanks again.
Lotsa parts being submitted to the gods. Maybe they will smile on someone soon.
-
Richard Assen just ran a 222.5. Not the 260+ of SpeedWeek -- but still good for this Salt, this event.
Todd, Terry Kizer was asking if you were here. He said he saw your truck driving around and was going to talk to you about a fellow you both know. Anyway, then Terry saw our truck, saw the Twin Jugs Racing Division stickers on it -- said -- oh, never mind. I guess all I saw was your truck. But the stickers must work - someone saw 'em and commented.
-
Just went to registration -- Delvene is not available (hasn't been officially seen in quite a while). Linnea (did I spell that right?) took my written request for record logs -- I had emailed Delvene this morning about them, too, and yesterday she promised to send them to me, also. But I don't have them -- sorry, everyone. I'm not surprised that Delvene is busy and hasn't sent stuff too me -- there are things for her to do that are most likely more important than taking care us us on the website. At least I got the run logs. And I'll mosey once more to the timing tower at the end of the day and get the run logs from today. Best I can offer. . .
-
Hi Jon
have you seen Alan Cathcart around if so any news, he's riding a couple of Triumphs for South Bay numbers 71 & 72 i think.
Keep up the good work,
One other question - How many miles do you think that you've walked on the salt so far this meeting? it's gotta be a few by now.......
Cheers
K21john
-
I heard, on the radio, about Alan making a run this morning -- but haven't seen him. I'll keep an eye open and get in a "howdy" if I can. Let's see -- this morning he was on a Thruxton -- went in the 150s, I think I recall. I'll see. . .
AS for how far have I/we walked -- not all that far. More often we ride around the pits and hop out to chat or take photos. Walking takes bloody forever. Not that it's a slow way to move, but rather that danged near everyone knows us and wants to stop and chat. I do that -- then you folks get short-shrift 'cause I don't post enough. Don't say it -- you know it's true! (If I knew how to put those smileys in here I'd put one down now).
-
Jon it's easy :-D
there just a click away. Anyhow your reports bring a smile to us over the pond......
It's getting near midnight here so it's off to bed will check back in the morning and looking forward to seeing the run sheets.
Next year a few of us are hoping to be out there so will come looking for you with a cold one and say hello.....

Dons bike ran 229.822 at El Mirage a few years ago and got his nephew Mark in to the Dirty 2's

Kaz,
Yes that was when he hit a cone, broke his foot and stayed on under power however he did not go down thankfully and did NOT exit past the coned off race course. He was very fortunate and lucky.
John
-
Sux to hear about Don's bike, but glad it stayed contained enough for a safe and effective (normal) stop.
I'm sure Richard is just barely getting started... he'll be spraying less salt as the next few days go by I'm sure.
Have you heard from Franey today (you know, while you're just roaming aimlessly with nothing to do)? Hope he's doing well, having a good time and steadily picking up speed.
Tell Terry hi and wish him all the best out there from me please. If (when) you see him again i'm curious if he intends on making either WOS or September Maxton? Tell him I look very forward to talking to him and to call anytime.

Wind has picked up so much that the int'l course is now being closed for the day. Bub #7 has returned to the pit. Wind is 20+++mph. "Secure your EZ-ups", sez the announcder on the racio. Yeah, secure 'em so they wait for a BIG gust of wind to take off. Better to take down the fabric completely, hey? Don't ask how we know. . .
Mountain course is not on hold because of wind. It's 5PM -- everything shuts down at 6, he says -- so maybe all done for the day.
-
Todd, Franey was using a belt for the primary -- and got in 2 1/2 runs before it went away. Last we saw he was towing it to his pit to put the chain back on.
Terry didn't say anything about his plans for the rest of the season. No doubt I'll see him again tomorrow (still dreaming about the 15T for us), so will ask then.
Even with the headwind (blowing south to north) -- starting some AMA return runs. 163.386 is the bike 191 speed just now. One more bike in line up there. Bike 7142 on the mountain course. Running through the mile at 159.848.
Ray is handing me some more photos. Don't forget to check the gallery.

6.03 PM and we're done for the day. Nancy's out getting the run logs put onto the thumb drive -- I'll post 'em sooner or later. By the way, Delvene did call to report that she'll get me the records as soon as she doesn't have more pressing needs -- like some FIM paperwork and silly little stuff. But get 'em we will.
By the way -- the radio announcer is telling folks that they can see yesterday's run logs, printed on paper, on the registration trailer. I told him to tell folks to call home with the news that the logs are on this site. I think he was perplexed with the idea of posts form the salt...never did announce that. Whatever -- you folks are getting the best coverage that we can provide -- and thanks to your comments (mostly helpful, thank you very much) we're doing better every time.
Wind is still pretty stiff -- from the south. Must be 15 mph -- temps about 80 -- nice weather.
-
 My congrats, to you Jon. Youre doing one hell of a job right now. It can't be easy runnin around like a head with your chicken cut off! But, again THANK YOU ALL for what your doing for us out here!! Crow.

Good, now maybe I can get some work done! :-D
Thanks for the play by play! Makes not being there not so bad! ;)

Run logs will be posted in the morning. No incidents today. We'll be out there nice and early to watch the liners run -- we hope.
-
SSS, I am on the Salt and with everything else going on it is great being able to sit down at the hotel and read the days updates. I learned more from reading posts then I did out there!
The Salt has greatly improved and there is much hope that it will only get better. At about 7:00 pm we saw Sam Wheeler with the EZ Hook on the trailer heading out. It looked to be ready to run so we are thinking he will be in line first thing in the morning?
Tod
-
Wow just went through all 12 pages!! Thanks for all the updates Jon and Company!
Todd, Terry will be a WOS helping the other Terry's Liner I don't think he'll make max but he will be at Texas in Oct!
Terry said on the phone this evening he felt like the salt was going to be much better in the morning..
I hope the A-ward team can get a full pull should see some SWEET numbers!!
Nite all

Do you have any news of my friend John Renwick with the Vincent Streamliner sidecar ?

How do I access the photo gallery,
Many thanks for all the updates
David from Sussex
David,
This is the direct link: http://landracing.com/gallery
You can also access it by going to the landracing.com website at http://landracing.com (we're in the forum section of the website, that's the main page of the actual website) and clicking on the photogallery link on the top of the page.
Once you're in there look for Bub Speed Trials 2009.
They've created a folder for each day of the event.

Here are the Run Logs for yesterday, 8/31
-
:-D Thanks for the run sheets, seems that a lot of bikes didn't make the return run and the ones that did were slower in the main than on their down runs on the INT course,
Is this possibly a wind issue or just changing conditions of the salt?
Cheers

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, and all the ships at sea. It's Tuesday morning and we're at the 2009 Bub's Motorcycle Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
Whew -- that's a mouthful for a first post of the day. But now the boilerplate is done and I can start with regular posts. Racing began a few minutes ago. Temperature here near the pits is 68F, and there's a breeze from the east at about 4-6 mph.
The streamliners are forecast to run today -- according to the radio guy. Bub's is down at the 1/2 mile of the long international course (don't know why not at the Zero), setting up. No other liners were down there just now.
New ruling in effect today -- All riders on race bikes must wear helmet when the bike is in motion - whether heading to pre-stage or to the line or to the fuel truck or whatever. Fines will be imposed for non-compliance. Just saw our first "violator" of the day -- didn't see him get stopped and ticketed, though. . .
Stay tuned.
-
A coupla photos from the end of the day yesterday. Let's see if I can remember that the young lad's name is Werner Miller. Werner for sure -- Miller maybe. Anyway, he's the youngest competitor here and -- Dad says that he can see the beginnings of an expensive lifetime avocation.
Dale Gullett is (the late) Cliff Gullett's brother, riding the bike that cliff started racing and building on before he went to the 'liner. Leanne, Cliff's widow, decided that the bike shouldn't sit in the shop -- should be raced and development should continue. Ergo -- Dale's runing and doing well with it.
The MV Agusta crowd is here again with a few bikes and perennial rider Rosie Franklin. (http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/Bubs%202009/IMG_1001.jpg)
The MV bikes are just as pretty as you've read that they are -- works of art -- that go fast. Rosie rode the 1,000cc production bike to a 191 on Monday -- hopes to get it to more like 195 before the event ends.
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/SeldomSeenSlim/Bubs%202009/IMG_1000.jpg) He'll also be on the tasty-looking Triumph for a run or three.
And then there's the newest of the stable -- Nancy's standing by it.
Here's a set of photos of a "real" sidecar -- don't shout at me for putting it that way, but this rig rides with a passenger. Overall shot:
The passenger's accomodations, including stuffed animal. Note the oil pressure gauge visible to the passenger. I assume that the pass. is to watch it and knock on the rider's head of the pressure drops, hey?

Can we get these as spreadsheets like the first day please?
(some of us like to lump them into one giant run log! ;) )

Scott Stites ran a 174.595 qualifier this morning -- putting 3.1 mph on the record. He's in impound now - kinda cranky, though, 'cause they won't let him do anything (him, or anyone, for that matter) but change plugs and replenish consumables. He wants to change rear sprocket -- can't quite pull the one on there now -- but the rules don't allow it. Whatever -- congratulations Scott.
PS Debbie, I was afraid you'd say something like that. Bob and I thought about it last night and decided that using the pdf format instead of the xl would be fine. I've got the raw data if you want it -- can send that if you want to mess around and make it postable. Sorry. . .
-
Jon
Ask the Rice bros. why the kilo speeds are not converted into KPH. How many AMA & FIM entrants are actually entered to run for those records. Just the old BNI timer wondering about this stuff. Wish I could be there to shoot some pictures and visit.

Please do send raw data & I'd be happy to set up & supply spreadsheet. Thanks! Send to one of my email addresses just let me know which one! LOL

Go Scotty GO!!
-
Scott just ran his return run -- sounded good, but let's see what the announcer says -- 172 and change. Good enough to back it up if he had that 3.1 on the old number. Good work, Scott.
-
on sidecars does BUB make you have a rider on the side??? :|
-
Keep up the good work, SSS. Much appreciated.
-
Mike, it's an option. I don't know if it's an AMA option or FIM option -- but some have a passenger, some don't. Fritz Egli, the Swiss fella, just ran a 193 on his 'Busa sidecar -- with the 132-pound ballast, not a live person. 193's a decent run, hey? He's in impound with it right now. Here's him and the bike.
Here's Scott after the backup run, too.
-
Right on Scott.. good job! Having to cut away portions of a stock front fender.. sheesh! Now untie that arm from behind your back and change that gear before they put a straight jacket on you.
Cool deal on the sidecar rig, congrats to Fritz! Any idea what kind of class that is in (or would be in, at an SCTA event)?
Todd
-
ballast, good idea didnt think of that, I thought ballast was just for roadsters. good work Jon when is Nancy going to run?? put her on a bike someones bike

Heading down to the start of the int'l course to see why the Bub liner hasn't run. Yesterday they had fuel issues, got 'em solved, went to the line and waited a few hours for the wind -- which obliged by getting worse and faster and gustier as the day went on. This morning they were down there at the line with the portable pit set up -- so we figured they'd be running anytime to take advantage of the morning conditions. Here we are, two hours or so since runs started - no Bub yet. I'll let you know what's going on -- if they'll share.
-
Mike, niether Nancy nor I are members of the American Motorcyclist Association, so we aren't eligible to run here. That's why she won't be on the race course (except maybe after hours, in the pickup, going to visit the timing tower).
Todd, I'll check out the sidecar rig and get you a class designation, then spend some time trying to translate from AMA to SCTA.
-
well thats ok WOS and Finals are coming up. she can get her red hat there.
-
I'll put up run logs in XLS format tonight, also PDF's from 8/30. So there'll be a full set of each.
Bob

Thanks Jon, but i know you have your hands full and I got more curious of the speed so I enhanced the photo a some. From what I can tell in that view (boost gauge, up pipe and no seal on the tank)... it looks like a SC/BF-(cc?).
Thanks (i don't want to take away from your tasks at hand),

Assen on the track -- ran a 223.+ just now. Still lacking that 260 -- but also still fastest of the meet.
Bub has a wiring gremlin right now. Crank sensor and cam sensor aren't in a talking mood -- but then, they're buttoning the airbox bacdk on top of the motor, so maybe...
-
That's what Eric Maning reported -- and I hear also that one of the stabilzer wheels' linkage was crimped and wouldn't retract all the way, so that explains the whacking by a hammer I heard coming out of the trailer.
Soon?
-
Wow just went through all 12 pages!!
Todd, Terry will be a WOS helping the other Terry's Liner I don't think he'll make max but he will be at Texas in Oct!
Thanks Shane, I'll look for him at WOS since I didn't see him at SW.
And if you think the 12 or 14 pages on this are something so far? Wait till you see the amount of people signed in and the lack of work getting done when the Shootout (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6381.0.html) is being reported.
Todd

Not everyone out here is racing. Here's one of the Angelic Bulldog geeks (sorry, engineers) working on friction testing:

Way to go Scott, congratulations!! Now put that sprocket on an do it again.
Jon thanks for the great coverage, almost as good as being there.

Todd's got it SC-BF-1350
193 is a great speed maybe he can get close to the speeds that have been run at El Mirage, with the better weather and also running a much longer course I sure hope they can. Looks like Bob B will be paying him a few dollars for top time on a "WOAS" I like his bodywork and would love to see some more pictures of his rig

Heading back to the pits. The Bub bike's problem is now being reported as a MoTeC sensors issue. They're oging to exchange the units from the spare motor. The Salt Gremlins are at work -- no vacations for them.
We saw the 666 'liner leave - the first bike to run a qualifier following a long wait for returns. Thebike is the one that yesterday rolled when the chute came out early when a tilt sensor proved to be vibration sensitive. Anyway - just now they were having troubles getting the 7-point harness buckles to hook up -- so used some creative cursing and got things to fit. By the way -- this bike is running on an old Burt Munro record.
John, we're back at the pits and I'll look for the Swiss bike for your edification.
-
slim was just wondering what it costs to get a fim or ama record certified or is the price included in the entry fee like scta ------------------------- thanks willie buchta
-
Willie,
AMA record certs are included in the entry fee which requires the AMA membership, the FIM charges I believe 200 for each Mile and Kilo for the cert after ratification by the FIM general assembly..this is what I think we paid in 2005.
Anyone else know for certain the cost for FIM certs?
J

Not much going on but runs. The radio announcer talks abouthow fast they're cranking through -- Billy Shoemaker talks about how slow things are moving (3 runs in three days for him). Anyway -- I'll take a photo or two and then head down to the int'l long course start to see what's and who's down there.
-
Any news on Sam?
-
Sam's bike is together and in the pits. Bub is still chasing MoTeC gremlins (just left the long int'l start line and got that update. Leslie Porterfield is on the course now -- runs 217.954. Her best run so far. The salt sounds pretty good -- not too much whelspin.
Nancy and I are making a quick run to town -- stay tuned, but it'll be about an hour 'til we're back on the air.
-
Thank you!
-
I just talked to Sam and he is ready to go. Not sure about the salt conditions so he may wait until later in the day or tomorrow.
-
It's pretty breezy down at the start line for 'liners -- but if Sam says he'll go - then he'll go. He wasn't at the line just now, though.

Thanks for including the shots of the Swiss rig from legendary swiss tuner FRITZ EGLI who will going for a supercharged sidecar record. Egli has a long-time history dating back to the late sixties for his frames and rolling chassis kits. Egli Vincents, et al. Although already in his seventies, he still creates extraordinary motorcycles, like his Egli B-King w/Hayabus engine. Fritz, aka "The Wizard of Schangnau."
-
First of all, Fireman Jim just ran a return of 201.846 -- is happy - got his naked 200+ run in. Happy is a bit understated -- he's tickled!
And Fritz Egli just did a return run of 211+. He was being interviewed - I couldn't get to him to see the time slip and it isn't posted on the paperwork yet.

Oooo & a nice run too, 211!

WTG Jim!!! Unreal speed on a naked 750!!!

It's 3.30 -- and just like yesterday, the wind is picking up quickly. Then - things went on hold 'til the wind died down, which only happened late in the afternoon. We're still racing - but it's going to be really breezy and scary out there. No news on the 'liners - save that the 666 ran in the 90s. I'll go visit.
Dean, I kinda thought you'd be cheering for Jim on that run. You nekkid bike speedsters stick together.

Deb,
If it were ECTA or SCTA it would be legal, the sidecar rules are very limited and allow many things including dustbin fairings, solid rims, smaller than 15" rims, ...
That 211 is a great speed , our record on our woas is 218+ in the dirt last year along with records at 207,212, 216 and our 997cc engine just ran 191+ at the last El mirage event.
I am sure that sidecar is built right and has the power and aero to go even faster. I wish I could see it in person..maybe very soon, whats the top time?
JW, thanks for the pictures... :-D
John
PS, Awesome number for JIM ! ! !! !
-
I erred -- sorry. I went back (and worked my way through the Swiss-German accent) -- the bike's top speed here this event is 208.723. "More tomorrow", I was told. I asked how -- the mechanic told me that it was not going to be more tune-up, but just a better track. We'll see. He asked, by the way, John -- what's your fastest speed. I told him you had run a 238 on your bike -- just trying to be modest for you but to let him know he won't have an easy time at bettering your speed.
You have run 238, right?
-
Jon,
Only 218 in 1.3 miles of dirt.
Thanks.
John
PS, how long is the run up to the timed section this year at Bubs?
J
-
Assen's crew is looking for a 'Busa oil cooler. Anyone got one handy out here?
Return runs on the int'l course are underway -- so the wind hasn't got too bad.
Bike 64 on the course. Ran 157.9 earlier, just now runs, with a fine tailwind, 164.824

slim
my spy on the salt says the Mission electric motorcycle is there...whats up with it?
kent
-
John, the run up is a mile or three or five, or maybe 1.7, depending on whether you're left handed or wearing blue undies.
I'll take a photo of the course map and let you see -- there are a few different iterations of the course -- and I'll let you answer your own question.
Kent -- I keep hearing about the electric bike -- but haven't laid eyes on it for you. I'll redouble my efforts.
-
nice reporting slim. as always. my dad and i will be heading out on sat. to do a coarse inspection for wos. will you still be on the salt?
-
Maybe we'll see you, Bo. Nancy and I will be in Texas the weekend before WoS and returning by Monday night. When are you two gonna be here?
By the way, the announcer here at Bub's is mentioning Save the Salt quite a bit -- so I typed up a notice about your scrap to plaque project and asked him to have the folks here deliver broken stuff to me to give to you.
-
sweet thanks slim. we will be out sat the 5th
-
Scott dropped a tooth in his final gear and just ran 175.1 into a 6mph headwind. He getting ready to run the other direction shortly!
-
What I was gonna say, Randy. Scott just walked over to tell us the news. He's going out to run the backup now -- but will have a tailwind this time.
I hear the electric bike ran a 147 today -- maybe hurt some batteries. I'll try to chase it down. Back in a minute or three.

Randy,
Was this in the Fuel class on the 174.5 record?
J
-
Yes John, it was in the fuel class. Scott just made his back-up run at 178.013. We have a new record
-
We want a 180 .......
-
I just saw him and his GPS showed 179. Fastest he's evefr gone, he sez...

Slim ... close / still no cigar ...

tell him to duct tape his skirt down..... it keeps fly'n up over his helmet..... we know its got a 180 in it....

Only about 8 minutes left in today's event.
A Ducati 999 just ran a 172.839 mph
-
Leslie Porterfield, next to last rider of the day, runs a 212 on the '02 'Busa
Last run of the day was on an '89 Yamaha 650 VStar -- 89 mph.
Th-th-that's all, folks!
I'll get the run logs from Rice Brothers and post 'em as soon as I can get 'em up here. In the meantime, don't forget to look at the photos in the Gallery.
-
I was looking at the run sheets for yesterday and they show entry #701 running a down run at 135.206 & return run of 135.974 in 1000/PG/APS apparently going for a record. I hold the record in this class from 2008 with #9216 at 150.34. For some reason on the 2009 Bub website record list it shows my previous 2007 record of 129.774. It was not updated on the 09 site. Checking the link to 2008 on their website confirms the 150 record ... I have the AMA certificate in hand and it says 150.540 ... Unless I am missing something, somebody named Serge Martin (701) is going to be very disappointed.

Joe, did you send in your third $200 after the meet to make it a fer-real-fer-real record?
Just askin? :-D
Todd
-
Good eye, Joe -- although I understand about checking on a record that one holds. Anyway -- I talked with Eric Manning today about the record lists from this event - and still am hearing that I'll eventually get them to post. But as far as right now -- nothing.
I'll see if 701/Martin is around here tomorrow and ask (nicely, without telling him I'm shadowing for you) about the record.
-
Ohhhhhhhh, an additional fee ... I missed that ... now I get it ... J
-
AMA rules, Page 14, Section 1.J. Record Recognition, Paragraph 1, Sentence 3, States:
Falsification of ANY record document is subject to fines and exclusion from future meets.
Wonder if the AMA will pay you and them not show up at BUB next year if you are correct about their false record documentation on their site?
Todd
-
Slim,
It looks like the 1000/PF/APS record is open ... If Serge is still there he has a opportunity ...
Todd,
They just missed updating the record list on their site from '07 ... ECTA does it better ... J

I know Joe.. just bs'n. Thanks to the power of the internet, can you imagine when it may have taken into the following year (if ever) to find mistakes like this.
You may find out he is in the fuel class already, and it's just a clerical error on the website showing he was in the gas class.
Would be nice if he knows either way!
This is (JUST) one reason it's always good to not only know who held the record you are running on previous to attempting it, but also who held it before them (the knowledge can lead to keeping a closer eye and other beneficial things as well).
Todd
-
Th-th-that's all, folks!
Jon and Nancy, thank you very much for another exciting day on the salt flats... it was ALMOST like we were there.
Go home and get some rest... you have an early morning ahead of you if you're going to keep the natives tamed.
Now back to this nooner you were talking about?
Todd

Whats up with the Turbine Bike????
JonAmo
-
Here are the Excel sheets for 8/31......
-
... and here are the PDF's from 8/30, for those who are Excel-challenged.... :-D
-
Jon, I don't have a list of who ain't there no more, but I didn't see the turbine bike at all today. I did see it on a trailer at the end of yesterday -- but don't know if that was for going home or for moving around the pits. I'll ask in the morning.
-
Run Log PDF's for 9/1/09
-
Run LOg XLS's for 9-1-09
We'll get good at this about the time the event's over! :-D
-
Great work Bob & Jon. Again, thanks.
-
yeah I didnt see a run for their number with the turbine bike... Wonder if they had a problem in tech that prevented them from running.
I really wanted to see them run that thing, it was a blast at WOS a few years ago. How they were fixing the problem with salt intake was another thing I was curious about... They were going to add some type of gear box on it instead of a direct drive system If I remember correctly.
JonAmo
-
Wher's Sam?
-
Howdy. It's morning. Here's what we know so far:
Rosey LACKEY (sorry, we mis-named him the other day -- his last name is as shown a few words ago) -- Rosey was making his run on 2215 on the Int'l course and went down about the 1 1/2. He's up and about and apparently okay, from what Mr. Radio pronouncer sez) and they're doing a course sweep looking for a kickstand.
Bub bike found the problem last night, is in pre-stage and the engine has run, and they're now just waiting for the wind to do something different than whatever it's doing right now. It's a down-course breeze about 8 mph, I'd guess -- tailwind.
Joe (Daly) -- Serge made a run on the XB9 this morning and went 135. I'm sorry that I don't have the classes in which the bikes run -- but the announcements don't include any data but the number and the rider's name. About the only way to get a class is to wait in impound for the bike to return - and see what's written down.
This morning the Bub bike is staged at about the 1/2 mile, for whatever reason, so all riders are starting there. But they're only allowing two bikes at a time at that point -- and that's ALL! We were sitting there to do this update and got chased away and then flag-waved away (yup, got scolded twice already). I'm not sure why Bub is at the 1/2 -- but then, I'm just a reporter, not a ruler.
-
E-Z Hook leaving the pit and heading to pre-stage.
Oh entire-course hold -- radio system is down. Nothing happening.
-
Great news..get em Sam! !
Thanks JW!
John
-
Yeah, I think Sam Wheeler's entry is a crowd favorite -- if for no other reason than so much goofy stuff goes on in the pit. We were there yesterday afternoon watching Terry and Sam tightening a worm-screw clamp on a radiator hose -- and pushing and shoving one another aside when Sam wanted to use the hex head and Terry opted for the screwdriver slot to adjust the tension. These guys are serious racers, too!
Well, maybe it wasn't quite like that -- just observing that both were smiling while working on it. Lots more fun than I see in someother pits.
-
Noonan why are you not there racing?? what are you a roadster guy now :-P
-
Rex Svoboda just drove past and reported that the repeater system is back in operation. We're hearing them check out the various stations. Good news -- back to racing, I hope. No sign of Wheeler's bike yet -- and we'reon the access road by the long int'l start line -- he'll go past here on the way to the line. I'll let you know.
-
Alan Cathcart on the 7171 Thruxton Triumph on the Int'l course, and the 1457 ZX14R just ran a 181 on the mountain course -- qualifies him for the long course.
Cathcart runs 148.0
-
Wheeler and Buddfab just drove past us -- arriving in prestage in a few seconds. COOL! Candid shot, from the driver's seat of the pickup, of #999
-
Here's a shot of the course map for you, John -- and everyone, that is. Sorry for the blueness - I didn't have time to color-correct (like Ray is doing in the shots he's giving us).
Abnd here's Scott Stites leaving impound for a return run yesterday. Just a shoot-from-the-hip candid -- but he was having fun, no doubt.
-
Todd"
Here's a detail of the fenders on a trailerette like we've got. I like them -- reduce them amount of salt that's spewed onto the bike during runs to pits from end/runs to staging from pits. They attach with mini-trailer hitch-type mounts. Next year, hey?
-
Mr. Announcer says that Chris Carr is suiting up -- but I can't see it from our viewpoint, about 150 yards away (and I'm using my good glasses, too). There is a rider awaiting his run at the line down here -- been sitting on his bike, chatting with the starter, for at least a half-hour. I don't understand the delay -- poor dude must be about exhausted from sitting there, holding the bike up. No crew with him to help. Mountain course is running, short int'l course is running -- but not this fella.
Debris on the int'l course -- that's why nothing's happening. I hear that when the Bub bike runs -- all runs except the #7 will be stopped so everyone can watch this historic run (really -- that's what he said).
We're waiting for something. Wind was zero -- back up to a few mph tailwind.
-
Carr has asked for a wind reading, and so now what they're gonna do is send one of the "small" liners, starting from the three, to get a real indication of how the wind on the course is moving. It's #202, John Renwick in th eVincent 'liner, making a run.
Ooops, #202 is stopping in the middle of the middle mile. Chute is out, turning out, Not much good data there, hunh?
-
I hope my reload button dont go out, not now :-D
-
Still waiting. Rosie Lackey and his crew just drove by on the way to the end of the int'l course, along with the #1225 bike -- so that hints that whichever it was went down with him earlier wasn't that one. I'll check it out later -- maybe the blue Triumph.
Another run just went all to farkle -- #141, the Swiss group's turbo 'Busa, was making a run in the middle of the int'l long course and turned out. Not good sounding for the Bub and Wheeler liners. 2.5 mph at the tower right now, all other locations report under 1 mph.
Nancy sez she sees movement at the Bub bike's mobile pit.
Remember the guy that was waiting at the beginning of the course, and that I said must be getting tired? Hey -- he's just been moved off the course and has to wait for the Bub bike to make a run.
Radio announcer tells us that Manning just radied that the bike is ready to run as soon as -- as soon as -- as soon as he goes. Got that?
I hope your button doesn't wear out either, Mike.
-
......im an optimist........
...but if anyone thinks this first run for bub will be historic...with
respect to speed.....is kidding themselves...imho....
....wow.....sending out a "smaller" liner as a course.....feeler....interesting....
how do ya get that job..........
...i can imagine the conversation.....take out your liner....try to go
fast....if its nice and calm....get off the course as soon asap......so
we can run.........
-
"Mountain course is now being held - for the historic run of the Bub #7 streamliner."
Hey -- I don't write the script for this announcer, I just tell you folks what he's saying.
Oh, announcer just told us that there are bikes running on both courses, but soon they'll hold everything. And soon the glaciers will move back into the area, too. Ooops, Jon, no editorialising here, okay? That's going to be your job, Joe.
-
Jon W.......this coverage is unreal.......i know we keep saying it a
and thank you's........but WOW........priceless....regardless of the
speeds.........
THANK YOU.....
-
Oh, another new plan. I think this one is version 14.B. Now they're talking about sending a couple of fast sit-on bikes down the course before Bub runs. Now the starter's radio is farkling. Now Nancy's trimming her toenails. Stay tuned, go potty -- I'll watch and let you know what's happening.
-
click.... click.... click....
meeting in 10 minutes... hurry up... RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:-D
(thanks for the play by play! )
Debbie
-
Bike 1965, Erin Hunter on a 'Busa, just left the long course start. At least something's happening.
She runs 183.2.
Bub bike is ready to stage -- no engine sounds yet, though.
-
Bub engine running.
-
"Mountain course is now being held - for the historic run of the Bub #7 streamliner."
Hey -- I don't write the script for this announcer, I just tell you folks what he's saying.
Possibly BUB 7 has been set up a bit soft in the past? Now set on 'stun'?
-
Tow start rope attached, bike under way.
-
At the 1/2 -- running rich -- now cleaning out.
Second gear sounds stronger.
-
In the third mile. In fourth gear. In mile five.
In the measured mile . . . through the measured mile.
# 7 chute out. Chute didn't open properly.
Speed: 351.698
-
Pretty good shakedown!!!
-
Gotta be within 2%, isn't that the FIM rule for a return attempt? I don't think it'll do -- but tell me if I'm wrong.
Nonetheless -- not too shabby for the first run in a couple of years. Congratulations.
-
Great shakedown run  This coverage is so good it inspired me to hit the Paypal button. :-D
Fred
-
Fred, didn't you already do that the other day? Thanks -- and I'm typing this to let everyone know that I appreciate the donations -- and try to acknowledge them. Didn't I send you a thanks?
-
Awesome pass ! ! !
-
...wow.......incredible imho.........off the trailer.......
..i bow to them.....i had NO idea they would open
that strong on that course......
...sss....please let Denis know that the sit-on bikes
will be better course checkers if bub rules again
make rules adjustment to gain parity with scta...
(in light of new special constr. part. stream. rules changes)....
also........ACK........wish i could see his face.......Game ON........
.....sss please check with Sam and see if he has the "hat" Joe let
him Borrow........(Freud gift)..........from Vesco days..........
we know sam is capable........

Good Luck Sam

Great shakedown run  This coverage is so good it inspired me to hit the Paypal button. :-D
Fred
I agree Fred :-D
GO SAM WHEELER!!!
-
anybody please maybe its lunch there? :-P
-
no news is good news
-
Not much going on. Runs continue. Buddfab is warming the engine down here at the end of the int'l course, Wheeler is still canopy open in the pre-stage pit. I'll go ask about that hat.
-
Oh the waiting, wearing my finger out on the refresh button.
However if you fancy a little distraction check out http://www.angelicbulldog.org.uk/spec.htm
and see whats coming from over the pond for next years meet....

Here's the latest that we've got:
Wheeler's been airing up the rear tire, Buddfab ran 189, Wheeler's engine has been started just for checkout but the bike is still on the trailer, the little 125 cc Red and White Honda liner (#9622) is just leaving the line.
Sam says he thought he gave the hat back a few years ago after the Australia trip.
9622 is at the 2 mile. Speed through the mile: 133.1mph
By the way, Thanks, Dean. I appreciate the $$.
-
Jon, I made a small donation not to long ago and yes you did thank me. This coverage is lots cheaper than being there so I made another small donation. The only problem with this is I cant tear myself away long enough to finish preping the bike for the dyno this weekend and WOS.
Come on Sam!!
Fred
-
So -- Sam will move the bike up to about the 1/2 for his start - whenever that's going to happen. Bub started there, too -- the first half-mile of the long int'l course is too bumpy for the tow starts. Buddfab and the 9622 started down here at the zero. Buddfab did a lot of ziggy-zaggy as he left the line -- guessing it's the handling issue from the other day, not the bumps. But I'm not the pilot -- I shouldn't guess.
-
Fred, leave it alone. You've got a smaller motor than us, running in the next class down, and you're running faster - and making me feel kinda lame-O. Let it go the way it is and I'll be that much less embarrassed.
Nah, not embarrassed. If your bike is faster than mine (speaking in generalities here) I try to see it as encouragement that I've got more to learn, more to do, more to anticipate. Go for it, hey?
-
Hi Slim,
You just mentioned BuddFab went 189. Is that correct? if so WOW! Must be the 125cc motor.
Thanks for the great reports.
Cheers,
Scott
-
I didn't hear it from the radio system -- instead from Bruce, one of the SCTA inspectors. I'll check it out when we head up to the pits later on.
Tom Mellor went 198 yesterday, by the way. He's down here with the sliver-grey Triumph faux-streamliner for another run. I don't know what he's waiting for -- been sitting in the shade for an hour or more.
-
I cancelled a meeting to sit here and hit the refresh button. Well worth it. Next year we expect a live webcast, though.
-
We talked with Rosey a little while ago. He went down on the 1000 cc MV Agusta #2251 -- at about a buck-sixty five. No damage to him, and only sanded down a bit of the art on the left side of the bike. He's on the start line right now. Here's how we got him smiling again:
-
Rosey runs 191 mph. Not bad for a crasher from a few hours ago. He was the second run of the morning when it went down.
-
Jon,
Any updates on Assen and Leslie..?
Fastest unfaired bike? if you know of the top of your head..?
Thanks,
John
-
Not much going on here at the start line -- compared to what I might be able to find for all of you at the pits, so I thinkwe'll saddle up and head down there to find out what more we can.
Stay tuned.
Ooops, I say that and Tom Mellor starts up the bike. I'll hang around 'til he runs. Waiting for a return run coming towards us, then he goes. Nope, he's off now!
-
Being wedged between those two lovely ladies would put a big smile on my face too. :-D
Fred
-
Tom Mellor, on his #240 1969 T150 Triumph, runs 155.721 mph. 198 yesterday? Did I miss a run issue just now?
By the way, Sam Wheeler just moved the bike to the 1/2 to, we presume, get ready for a run. We're going to move the truck upto there now for more on-the-pot (I mean on the spot) coverage for you.
-
Go Sam!
-
FYI... great variety of pictures on the page linked in on this post:
Photos from Bub Speed Trials 2009 (http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,6705.0.html)
-
We're up at the 1/2 mile, and Sam's bike is off the trailer and on the ground. 10 minute hold has just been announced before it runs. Make your boss happy -- get some work done and check back in soon.
Wind is about 3-5 headwind in the downcourse orientation -- zero wind at the pits and tower.
Thanks for linking the photos, Deb.
-
Jon: if you have an idle moment  could you shoot a full shot of the red & black car that was next to the Mellor bike above?
Thanks.
Mike
-
Okay, while we wait -- let's get serious about a webcast (or call it what you will) from out here. I've wanted to do it for a couple of years, but am not technologically advanced enough to know how to do it. If you know the necessary stuff -- streaming audio online, internet connectivity speed required, and necessary programs in this computer -- you let me know offline.
I know how to gather the various audio streams and merge them, I know how to work with the sanctioning organizations to get their permission for streaming audio, I know what streams of audio I'd put on here, and I especially know how to find sponsors to fund the process and the program -- so if you and I get together we could ALL hear Glen saying "Take that puppy to impound!" next year.
I'm waiting to hear from you. Thanks.
-
Two Questions-
I know that Dale Gullett was thinking about installing the nitrous system on Cliff's Warrior and making a run - can anyone tell me if he is running, and if so, with or without nitrous....
also Wink Eller was going to have his bike ridden by Valerie Thompson, but i have not seen or heard anything about it this week------ is Wink there with the bike (which he renamed "The Spirit of Cliff Gullett") and set a record (I believe # 48 or # 49 on that bike) at Speed Week.
Also - thanks to Slim for all the great updates and continuing information -what great coverage - .......
I know all agree they are grateful for the info......!!!

The car is Tom and Diane Mellors ride from Vancouver
It's a 1950 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn which I think belonged to his late father, reckons it's comfortable and economical and must turn a few heads on the highway
The photo is from 2008, if you look closly you'll see the bike has grown in length
John
-
K:
Late yesterday afternoon I visited Dale in the pit and he asked me about the required safety shield over the end of a nitrous bottle. He was installing it as I left there -- so take that for an answer for now. I'll check it out when we eventually make it to the pits.
As for Winkn's bike -- will do, soon.
Tom Mellor's Rolls-Royce -- left the start line before I could gegt the photo. Later, Mike.
-
Canopy down on Sam's bike, now canopy open. Looks like Terry's kneeling next to the bike -- Sam must be inside. They won't let us closer.
Tightening the tow strap.
-
Rolling slwoly forward - don't hear the motor yet. Stopped -- no motor yet.
-
Come on Sam! !
-
Sam's view shown below.
Canopy closed.
Terry running to the tow truck.
-
Under tow./ Engine idling.
Moving, strap released.
-
On the throttle. Spun up in first gear, into second, out of sight and sound.
Moving along -- nice little rooster tail.
-
Go Sam!!!
The anticipation is intense :D
-
Get it get it get it ! !!
-
On course at the two.
999 by the three, looking good.
Accelerating nicely.
By four, looking good, in visual range of the tower.
-
361...?
-
Chute is out.
282.9 mph run
-
Okay -- NOW we go to the pits.
-
shit Fiat ass asshole
-
Nice... was the first run with the aluminum wheel?
-
The only front wheel he has is the aluminum one.
-
Dale Gullett says they're working on the nitrous system. They did lots of the "engineering" on the system at home and thought it was ready to jusgt bolt on -- unh, not quite that easy, I guess. He says they'll run on the bottled yet today, though.

Thanks! I thought I recognized it. The color difference in the year-to-year photography threw me.
No need for another pic.
Thanks again/

Slow right now -- going to the truckstop for a bite to eat, then back in a little while.

Scott Horner on the course -- runs his return run -- 189.450

Did I just spot a periscope on Tom Mellor's Triumph...What a hoot.

I JUST Have 2 questions-PRETTY PLEASE!!
#1 Any V-rod's Running If so How Fast :??
and
# 2 is for a Friend- Electric Bike/Bikes? Speed on Electric Sidehack ?
Thanks again Slim Wish I was there TOO :-( !!!!!
S/K..................

Lunch time and the updates slow down. Mike Akatiff tells me that 351 is great for the salt conditions. He is definitely not running. "We didn't event bring race gas!" So if his record is broken......his challenge to take it back will have to wait a bit.
Would like to hear how Sam found the course and how his run went.
-
Slim no apple juice, come on now

Good to know!! Did Mike mention what he is having for lunch? or what color underwear he has on?
-
Mike -- no worries -- I've filled my drink card. No more for me. Back from the truckstop -- pancakes are good, and Nancy had a taco plate -- should've had just plain tacos. Too much too eat for a light lunch!
Kax, I've got a photo in here of a V-rod. He had run an 88 the first run and then a 113. He's in the R W B class -- don't know how many runs he's got left in his permission slip.
Bub was in the pits before we left for lunch -- Sam's bike wasn't back yet. About his front tire -- it's carefully sheilded in the fender/front end assembly and not at all visible. I'll assume that the wheel was, as reported here by others, the aluminum one.
-
A little while ago a rider went down on the international course - took out some timing light equipment. The rider is okay, radio reports, and the lights are repaired and about ready to run that course again.
About 100 in the sun -- the thermometer in the truck says 104, but I discount it a tad for good luck.
-
Bike 951 -- a 'Busa -- just went on a return run on the int'l course. Michael Garcia is rider's name. Went 212.712
V-rod is passing us now #12 -- James Ramsey -- 157.768 mph
Happier now, Kaz?
-
Scott Stites just went by on the '03 'Busa -- don't know what class, of course. 174.101 mph. Good fun, hey?
-
Hi Slim,
Any thoughts on the Buddfab reported run of 189 this morning? Is it fact?
Just curious, i know your busy,
Cheers,
Scott
-
Scott -- it's not fact after all. They're in teardown right now, about 100 feet from me -- so i went and asked. 187 down, 185 return. Dang -- ONLY 186 or so average. As John said: "Displacement is over-rated."
I suppose now you're going to want me to have taken a photo of them measuring the bike, hey? Be right back -- don't bother to tell me to go.
Your wish is my command. Kent, I got your ad in one of these photos.

Ham and Cheese. Pink hearts!!

Talking about the Ack bike -- Rockywas saying that this is the first time he's gone to an event with no intention of running. He's here to talk about the bike and to answer questions -- and to glad-hand the zillionsof folks that walk past. But boring -- lots of talk, no action.
John Rains just went 173.3 on his bike. I hear he's the fastest-ever ski racer -- has gone 136 on skis. And they say we racers are goofy? Whoa!
-

There was a guy and a gal that took turns mounting their skis to the top of Rick Vesco's liner a while back I think she ran in the 150 to 160 range and he was in the 160 to 170 range. The funny part of this story is the guy was really showing nervousness before the run. Well Rick picked up on this. Rick asked the guy how fast he wanted to go and he said something like 170. So Rick without batting an eye says "so if I look in the rear view mirror and see you laid back flapping in the wind do you want me to really stand on it and give you a BIG number". The guy went pure white and had to walk away to gather himself up. Classic Rick :-)
-
Thanks Slim!
WOW! A 125cc streamliner going 186.
We are in the midst of building out our 125 streamliner so i apprecciatte the info.
Cheers,
Scott

The Bub bike, in the trailer, just went towing past on the way to the start line. It's 2.40 PM and they have to leave on a run before 4PM if they want to have the full 2 hours for a return run (assuming they qualify). So - I'll forecast a Bub run in the next hour or so. Stay tuned -- maybe I'll go back to the start line to give updates (and get your bosses all Plymouthed at me).
And also - the #1150 Team Arrow bike is about two vehicles from making a run. It'll be their first run of the meet, I think.

Down at the Zero of the int'l long course. Manning's bike will start from here this time, not the 1/2. It's still in the air next to the carrier. Leslie Porterfield is being her own umbrella girl, sitting on her bike, awaiting her turn to run.
Rosey Lackey is sitting in the a/c of the chase vehicle, the bike is in the sunlight (but wearing an umbrella).
Leslie leaving the line on #1976.
-
Team Arrow Racing is mostly a new crew for this year except for Bob Williams the designer & builder. Gay Fifer the new crew chief and Dave Loyd the new rider.
Bob told me that airport testing went great and I know Dave is a very experienced rider will be able to ride the wheels off this thing.
I've been trying to call them but no answer.
Keep at it guys...we are behind you all the way.
And thanks to SSS and Nancy for working so had to provide us with all the info and pics.

Leslie, on the '02 'Busa, goes 210.4.
Ramsey on a V-Rod, on the course. Previous run was 157. This run he travels at 161.156. It was a return run -- gives him a new record of about 159++
-
Bike 553, looks like a stock 'Busa, leaving the long start on the int'l course.
Bub bike still in the air - not on the course. Side covers off -- I can see the motor from here. Oooops -- putting the cover on right now.
Truck thermometer showed 88 as we drove down here. Neglible wind at this end (right close by the freeway). Shows 110 sitting still with windows closed, enginee and air conditioning running. HOT!
553 still hasn't left the line.
-
Thanks for all the updates SSS.
-
553 has left the line (was waiting for some return runs to end, it turns out). He's at about the one mile.
553 (Jeff Cauby, Sebastopol, CA) runs 178.3
-
Slim..your bringing alot of visitors to the site also! Great work! Crow.
-
high gear---does the team arrow also use a periscope willie buchta
-
1150 was a turnout.
The reason I had a bad feeling was not only was it the first run for the liner however the first for the new rider on the salt..that liner is not the easiest to look forward from as I remember Gary had to look through a periscope while laying nearly flat on his back. :-o
I do wish them safe and fast runs however.
John
-
high gear---does the team arrow also use a periscope willie buchta
Willie,
Yes however I am not sure if it is still set up that way.
John
-
Crow,
Yes Arrow does use a periscope. I had the good fortune of sitting in the Arrow last year and it was remarkable how well the periscope worked. It was as if you were looking through a standard windscreen attached to the body.
Cheers,
Scott
-
Willie, the periscope was the issue that kept them from running 'til now. They had only about 90 degrees of peripheral vision -- rules want 120. They were pounding and beating on things when I visited the pit the other day. I guess that they got it past tech -- have no idea why the bike turned out a little while ago.
-
Keep on keeping on, folks. Bub bike is all wrapped up in bodywork, but still in the air. It's 25 minutes 'til shut-down for FIM qualifying runs -- gotta get going. Three bikes waiting to go, before Bub, and befoe they can go we've got some return runs on the course.
Of course -- I think that the Bub bike gets to pull rank when it's time to run -- the rest of the waiting line keeps on waiting.
I see seven people by the #7-- six of 'em watching the last one reach inside the bike. Nothing else going on down here.
Other runs -- Bike 191, one of the Swiss guys, on an '08 Suzuki BKing ran a 173.4 mph.
#2300, Todd Cole on a TT600 Triumph, 121.452, on the mountain course.
-
SSS-- Is your laptop a PC or a Mac? I dug around the back room for a camera with Audio/Visual, now just need to pick up a capture device to put between it and your computer. Small time production, but should be able to webcast. I'll see what needs to be done on your site for a running window. I'll came out to WoS, as of Day 2, and if you have time we can fiddle with it if things aren't too busy (Huh?). Now, the world will STILL expect updates as great as this thread. Especially since a bunch of folk are away from their computers til after work.
-
JW,
Any news about Richard Assen? Top time seems like it should be better so I assume he is waiting on parts or better salt?
John
-
The 1150 bike did have 120 deg of vision in the past...I think Dave might be sitting lower and farther away from the mirror than me. He is a lot smaller than me...at 5'10 I'm as big as the bike will hold. The farther away from the mirror you are the less with of view.

Assen's icing the cooler right now here at the end of the int'l course. I just did what I could to give him some help -- gave him and his crew a few of the wonderfully-useful landracing.com neck coolers, which are available for only $5/each at this and other events. Richard's now in his black leathers.
Rosey's bike #2251 being pushed to the line down here.
The bike that just left was 1196, Don Mills, 203.9 mph
Bub bike is being moved to pre-stage -- away from the trailer, still on the transporter.
-
Rosey's away. Assen's pushing to the line. Looks like a bit of a headwind down here at the zero. Bub bike hidden behind the trailer. Assen helmeted and walking to the bike. He walks barefoot, by the way, save for when he's wearing the racing boots. Dang Kiwi's. . .
-
Rosey, on his production MV Agusta 1000, goes 188.2 mph
11 minutes 'til 4 pm. I wonder if Bub will run anyway and hope to qualify and turn around in less than two hours. Other bikes aren't allowed to leaave to qualify for FIM after 4PM -- Bub might decide to try anyway.
Assen is waiting for a green flag. Won't warm the motor much -- overheating is their biggest problem
-
Assen is started. Leaving now.
-
Good luck Richard ! !
-
Go Team A-Ward.
-
Can't tell for sure from here -- but the Bub bike might be back in the trailer. I'll get Richard's speed and then go check.
Yep -- no run today. I don't know why -- will see if they'll tell me.
Bike #519 goes 214.201 mph. Still no 260s -- when will he repeat?
-
Wow...how is the salt..I am only 8 hours away..
J
-
I wonder if the Bub crew is doing a crowd-fake... The transporter is in the trailer and now they're moving the rig along the FAR side of the course. Maybe it's to take it to the half-mile to start. Not much time, though. . .
She-E- Moto on the long int'l course right now. It's a GSXR1000, Andy Sills up. He's the guy that rode Jack Costella's laydown bike liner the first times it was out, remember? He also held a two-up record on a BMW. He goes 181.8. Bub bike still sitting in the transporter and not leaving the line. Updates coming as they're worth the typing. Chris Carr standing outside the support truck, twirling a wind speed gauge like it's a yo-yo. But he isn't suited up -- wearing shorts and a cap, chatting on the phone. Sure would be a bummer if he traveled all the way here and gets in only a run today, may be two tomorrow. . . Of course those two could be giant -- qualify on one, back it up on the other -- that's all it'll take.
-
#121, a Swiss guy's 'Busa. goes 194.377.
Back to you, John. Richard Assen's crew cheif earlier said the bike was hooking up better than earlier in the week -- but he was still needing to pedal it during the top gear part of the run. Can you get here by morning and show us how you'd do it?
-
Daily coverage like this....priceless! Thanx Jon! Just visited the PayPal site to Pay-you-pal!!!

Slim,
Yes I could be there however I also realized that tomorrow is the end of the money and it is severely reduced from last years 10K that was up for grabs, the turbo on our little bike is much smaller and does not make the big HP numbers like Richards and Jasons bikes however it is a very tractable with respect to applying the power as to how the boost comes in..very linear.
3 runs in a row at 251.8-252.8 last year however looks like Richard, Leslie or another person will win it this year..kills me to sit here and talk on the phone to customers during this meet.
I am sure the customers can hear the fresh button being clicked a million times.. :-D
-
The Bub bike has moved to the 1/2 and stopped, and the bike is being rolled out of the trailer as I type. I guess that means a run is imminent.
Thanks for the donation, Jack. Maybe I should tell you to keep the donation and buy some Rogaine.
Oooh, I'll never get another donation if I keep up talking like that, hey?
Don't forget, bosses of the world's land speed racers -- this event ends tomorrow at mid-day. You'll get some work done by them after lunch.
-
Bub bike is off the transporter and on the ground. Jack, Nancy says a chromedome could be very sexy -- and I'll let her discuss with you, in person, under what circumstances.
Looks like Chris is in the bike. They're bending over and adjusting belts. Canopy not on the bike yet.Tow vehicle coming around to get into position to pull the 'liner.
Ray just handedme some more photos (well, gave me the thumbdrive). Most of his stuff is in the Gallery. Don't forget -- I'm giving him part of the money donated at this event -- to payhis way. He's a budding professional photographer (at age 62) and wants the exposure. Visit the Gallery, and also his site (www.chevyasylum.com).
Canopy still not on #7. Click to post.
-
Fritz Kott just ran 86.5 on the Int'l short course.
Bub's is adjusting the tow rope. Official trucks scooting all over the place--but nothing else right now.
By the way -- very kind thanks to the official that's directing spectator traffic down here at the long course end. He has graciously realized the Nancy and I, and Ray, know enough to park far enough out of the way of the bikes starting out -- that we don't get chased away. And I guess that means we've been being good little boys -- and that, in turn, means that we can provide you at home (and at work) with the best information we can get.
Bub still sitting in the shade, five poeple clustered about it. Tow rope is attached but not stretched out. Somebody's kneeling by Chris .
No other bikes running from the long end of the int'l course - all are in the shade and waiting for the Bub bike to do something.
A headwind breeze has come up down here. I don't see any flags to watch, but I'd guess at least 6-9 mph. I wonder if that's what's holding up the #7 run. . .
-
Let em know my breaks almost over! Too much suspense!
-
Doesn't look promising -- they've just rolled the transporter rig out of the trailer and to the rear of the bike. Chris is out of the bike and walking to the support truck.
-
Any word on sam. also great job on the covrage
-
Thanks for the compliment. No word on Sam Wheeler -- 'cause we've been miles away from the pits to capture the (hoped-for) start of the #7 Bub's run. Looks like that ain't a-gonna happen now - so we'll saddle up, hit the trail, and get to the pits to try to find Sam and his crew.
-
Scott -- it's not fact after all. They're in teardown right now, about 100 feet from me -- so i went and asked. 187 down, 185 return. Dang -- ONLY 186 or so average. As John said: "Displacement is over-rated."
Great reporting on everything. Following the event like this brings to mind stories of ye olden days when people would gather around the radio to listen to some historic event unfold.
Question: What engine did they have in the Buddfab bike for those runs?
thanks,
Doug
-
First of all, Fireman Jim's blown 750, now with bodywork, ran a return run of 196.832 and got the record certified. Is it Nick or Mick that's the pilot -- his Brit/Aussie accent made it difficult for me to tell.
Second -- it was the 125 in the Buddfab bike that ran that 186 number.
-
From the Buddfab Streamliner page:
We will run the Bub Speed Trails in Sept. and hopefully the World Finals in Oct. Motors: Kent Riches lent us a RS125 and we would like to try the CR80 with the turbo.

Thanks, Dean (and also Slim) I missed that on the Buddfab page. I only saw the part about the 50cc Aprilia and the CR Honda. It boggles the mind that they could run 186mph on 125cc engine. I'm a bit of an Aprilia fan so it's cool to know they did it with the Aprilia rather than a Honda.

No problem Doug!

I heard this from Ray the Rat: The Sam Wheeler crew found too much salt in the bike and took it to town for a carwash/douche. I do not know if the salt was there in advance (I doubt it -- it's been months since the bike was run) or if the salt was from today's run.
I'm just back from Wink's pit. Ray was riding the 3000cc-class bike and he's the one that hit a timing light earlier today. So they've taken the front wheel off the 59-SCTA/BNI record, 2 AMA record bike and put it on the one that hit the light. But Ray says he doesn't want to make a run -- so they've switched it to pushrod fuel and will have Wink, hisself, make a run. Who says you can't have fun in this sport? First photo is the donor bike, second one is the recipient.
-
Other photos now that we're in the pits:
Alan Cathcart's #72 Triumph. Look carefully at the air funnel just below and to the inside of the headlight. I was told it connects "...to the torpedo room, below. and now you know one of our secret weapons."
-
Here's Alan chatting, and here's his full-wet rear tire (roadracing tire, he says, and homologated for 320 kph (these Brits talk that way, you know).
-
I wish I knew how to get more than two or maybe three photos per post - without having to go to photobucket or something, without making the exposures smaller files. I want good shots for other reasons -- but have to make all these small posts to get them to you quickly.
Tom Mellor runs a 139.762 mph.
Here are photos of PegLegCraig's side car rig, with Craig in the background, admiring the landracing.com bumper stickers just presented to him by yours truly.
-
118.007 mph for a Norton Commando.
Final photos in this batch -- Bob Bakker's rig, withno clothes on it, getting cleaned. He says they're getting the bugs out (soto speak) and hoping for more fun in the morning.
It's got an electric tach -- don't forget to shut it off and save the battery. Note the THREE notes to rider.
-
Thanks to Jilly Callen/Iverson Originals for the donation. Stop by our pit at World of Speed or World Finals or find us at the Shootout and claim a bumper sticker, please. Or -- email me a mailing address and once we're at home we'll send one of 'em to you.
Scott Stites on bike 187, making a return run. Down run was 175.472, this run is 179.412. The announcer says his radio link is farkled, but he knows that what he did hear is over the 170 Scott needed to back it up. By the way, is that a number change -- he was 1187 before this?
Announcer got his radio working.
Fritz Kott's #491 '08 Blast, piloted by Richard Klingler (?), runs 156.044. That's one heck of a speed for a B-last -- what'd I hear wrong?
169.162 on a ZX6R just now -- not Fritz's bike -- someone else.
-
14 minutes left in today's action, and don't forget that tomorrow is a half-day. A half that'll star a couple of the fastest 'liners, a bunch of sidecar rigs, many sit-on folks trying their darnedest to go fast - and everyone having fun.
Jeff Cauby running a 'Busa, #553, in the measured mile. Looks like production -- stock exhaust. Runs 175.422 mph.
-
Looks like a new fuel class record for Scott at 177.442
FYI:
No funny fuel or Nitrous on the bike...same bike he ran in the gas class.
JW, can you get a current picture of the bike..?
Thank you,
John
-
Good timing, John. I ws sitting here with Nancy and Scott rode up to chat. I told him your average speed number -- all he had known, 'til then, was that he had got the record and gone fast. He thanks you for the number. Here's the quick photo I shot -- sunlight wasn't all that good -- sorry.
So -- Scott's standing right next to me and wants to thank John Noonan for the cam and advice and help and moral support, Bob Moreland for the head, and Kent Riches for the Bodywork for everything he's done for helping him. Big thanks from us, too. Congratulations, Scott.
-
come on Noonan only 8 hours are you on your way? need a car pool dummy? can be ready to go in 10 min :|
-
SSS, I'll repay u if u buy a new pacifier for Scott's baby.
FREUD
-
She's a doll Freud. You'd be suckered into playing grandpa if you had the opportunity to play with her. She sits in the babyseat in the back of the truck and smiles and laughs and is a good kid. Scott's been in a good mood, too -- maybe he's trying to show Sienna his good side -- "This is what Daddy looks like while he's playing, Sienna".
I was never a dum-dum fan, although we did let our daughter use one -- her mother's influence. But that daughter is now in her late thirties, has a 10-month old at home, and I don't think that baby has a pacifier. Still -- want me to scrounge one up? They might have 'em at Smith's.
In other stuff: Lynda, the puddle at Land's End is still there -- smaller than a few days ago, but not much smaller than it was yesterday. We've had no rain this week -- but the puddle is still there. Maybe another few loads of salt will need to be placed sometime over the winter. But the place is still there, awaiting you and your crew. The folks are doing a pretty good job of smiling and rememering who's who -- but they haven't asked for sweet rolls or flowers. For that matter -- they're guys. What else needs be said?
-
Bike 951 -- a 'Busa -- just went on a return run on the int'l course. Michael Garcia is rider's name. Went 212.712
V-rod is passing us now #12 -- James Ramsey -- 157.768 mph
Happier now, Kaz?
Weeeellll Yes Thank You Big Buddy >>>>>>>>>>>
-
SSS, I don't ask for sweetrolls or flowers, I just end up gettin em!! I'm sure the sweet rolls are bribes, (they don't work, by the way), but those flowers came from the hearts of 2 very special people!!
Guess that salt puddle will help slow the mad dash for the salt!! That just means I don't have to yell as much!! :-D
Thanks for all your coverage, you've been fantastic!! Make sure you have more stuff for me to sell at WF!!

I'm paid for what I know and how to fix it. Fixing it is a bonus for them but I'm still out in the plant. Every time I get back to my desk I open up the site and look...usually 2 to 3 pages have been added.
SSS & Nancy thanks for all your hard work. Guess there are not any "Johns" to worry about...Hope to see you at WF....JD

The #341 is about to make a run on the int'l course, no that's the #316, and if someone is on that course -- Bub #7 isn't running. It's in the line and waiting, though. Whatever -- we're on point and waiting for the first runs of the day. Stay tuned.
By the way, another reminder that today is the final day - courses close at 3PM Mountain time.
-
Bub bike is on the Salt, but that's about it right now. It looks like they'll start the run at the Zero, not the 1/2 as yesterday. The reasoning then was 'cause the first half-mile was bumpy. Maybe they dragged the course overnight and now they'll be able to use the extra geography for more run-up speed.
The Ack bike was being buttoned up when we were leaving here last night -- which means, I guess, that show - and - tell is over for this event. They had a fine position -- at the entrance to the pits hard by registration. I expect more people saw that one bike - than any other two-wheeler out here. Nice show -- and nice folks, always ready to invite us (and other passers-by) in for a drink, even a sandwich.
Runs are proceeding here, by the way. Not much wind at the long start of the int'l course -- where we are -- but a half-mile up the road there appears to be about 3-6 mph from the right-rear quarter (unh, that'd be about ESE). That's a tailwind, in otherwords.
I hope you all got to see the run logs from yesterday. That part of the meet has been running pretty well for us -- I hope for you, too.
-
JW,
Thank you for the info, reporting etc..top notch this round.
Ray, thank you as well!
Jon have you heard from the Wheeler camp whether "Sam the Man" is going to make another run this event weather and time permitting?
John
-
Haven't been to the pits yet, John -- waiting here for the Bub bike run. Will check on Sam when we can.
Leslie is on the #1976 'Busa right now -- just left this location. Lots of wheelspin in 1st, 2nd, and even in third. She's through the mile at 232.3! Decent!!
-
Mr. Radio Announcer, SIR!, just said that Sam Wheeler is heading down here to the start. They'll be here in 10-15 minutes -- it's a long trek.
Lots of activity at the Bub trailer now -- looks like Chris is suited and in the bike. The tow strap is attached to the bike and to the pull-truck.
Chris is asking for wind speed checks.
Leslie Porterfield lost an air cleaner and the hose clamp.

Bub engine is running. Pull truck starting up. Moving out!
-
Under way!
Rope is released.

I just wanted to say thank you so much, I needed a fix after Speed Week, great coverage!
-
Running a bit rough in first. Shifts to second -- rough, then smooth, then stuttering.
Out of hearing range. In the second mile.
Chute out in 1-2 mile.
-
Sam Wheeler's group, including the #999 bike, has arrived at the start line. to begin prep.
A few minutes later, now -- they've started the engine are are putting a bit of heat into it. Love the smell of alky wafting over the Salt.

Guys, a quick question...
on sheet 9-02-09 down run # 35 is listed as 210.7 mph. Is the class correct as APS1350AF ? I see that run # 25 a-ward is listed as APS1350AF as well and the speed was 225 mph.
But JB Racing #951 did a return backup run #64 at 212.7 to set a record?
I'm thinking that A-wards class is listed wrong on run #25 ?
Am I missing somthing?
Thanks
-
170.870 record return speed for 7911 -- I think that's the Norton 'liner. Almost identical to down run speed -- oughta back it up. Congratulations.
Wheeler's motor still idling over there.
I'm posting some photos into the Gallery during these interruptions -- if you've got time -- get some work done and come back in a little while. Gotta recharge the battery on the laptop, too.
Busy, busy, . . .

Thanks John !!!

Jim:
I don't know. There's your real answer. I do know that yesterday I had to wait a while to get the run logs from Rice Bros. They said that a competitor had questioned one bit of the information, and had then been invited to visited the timing trailer to present his case to them for adjudication. The protesting fella never arrived at the tower, so it was felt that he had not chosen to press his case. Now - was this the same apparent mis-presentation of the class that you've noticed? I dunno -- Rice Bros. did not fill me in -- let the sleeping dog lay, I guess.
I'll try to find A-Ward and see if they've got anything on the situation. They're not here at the long int'l start right now.
Wheeler's engine was blipped a few times after that long idle and now is off. The bike is still on the transporter.
No other bikes leaving this start line at the present.
-
SSS, a big thanks to you for bringing this to us at almost real time!!!!
Very, Very, cool.

Here's the latest, following a chat with Denis and Terry Kizer:
The Bub bike's run was aborted because the skids wouldn't retract. They're back here, the chute is repacked, and they're in the queue to make a run. It's back in the trailer right now -- I presume to be moved to starting position.
Terry says that last night they didn't "take it to town for a car wash". That is -- they felt the chain stretched too much on the 282 mph run and wanted to change chains. It's an hours-long job -- and they didn't think they'd be allowed to stayon the Salt that long after closing time, so they'd have to go to town to do the late-nighter. While there -- they might as well wash it at the car wash. Well, they were allowed to stay out here -- 'til 2AM, I hear, and go the chain work done. So now the bike is down here at the start and waiting for a run, just like Bub.
The Bub bike is rolling out of the trailer as I click "post".
Added later: The tow rope is attached to the bike. About a dozen people clustering around it. Apparently Chris is in the bike -- looks like they're adjusting straps. An official is checking wind speed.
-
Runs are continuing on the regular courses, and there are two down here awaiting their turn -- but I guess the 'liners will go first. It's difficult to give you much information off the FM radio -- it's quite static-y, and there are two announcers, each with his own microphone -- and the volume levels are way different -- when you can hear one okay - the other is just a whisper.
Bub is still setting up, Sam is still on the transporter. Crowd is moving away from the bike. What's that mean?
-
Bub engine is running. Tow truck driver in the truck.
-
Bub bike is moving out.
Picking up speed quickly. Under tow still
Released from tow,.
UNDER WAY!
-
Bub is picking up speed, shifting into second with a pop of the turbos.
At the three looks good, gaining speed.
Booking along in the measured mile.
-
355.047 mph
Pilot chute out.
through the ten mile.
passecd eleven, only the pilot chute open, going about 60 mph, past the eleven coming to a stop.
-
Hope all is well with Chris and the chute.
355MPH :-o
That's within range for a backup run isn't it? (353mph puts them within 2% of the record right?).
Man, I had goosebumps reading up to through the run... awesome job Jon!
Todd
-
That 2% number is correct, right? I don't know for sure -- and would be intereting in having it confirmed, just so we don't put out false hopes for the team.
Rick Gold closes up shop at noon today -- but your fuel now, racers!
Todd -- did you ever manage to figure out how to get some race gas to your shop for tuning?
Announcer: Course closes at 3PM, and riders are encouraged to get their qualifier runs done in time to take full advantage of the FIM two-hour turnaround time. But that's only an encouragement -- run whenever, but if you can't make the return before 3 you're S.O.L.
#999 is on the ground at the 1/2 mile, readying for start.
-
awesome just awessome job Slim, someone should talk to the rider of the liner that just ran he should get off course faster than that he,s holding up the meet going all the way to the 11 mile Were's lee when you need him . I forgot its Bub. LOL
-
Scott Stites just ran a 177.6 down run
-
 Best morning paper in the world! Keep up the good work with the info and pics flowing.
Would rather be there in person, but what you, Nancy and Ray are providing are top notch!
-
Looks like Sam Wheeler's #999 is about ready. The tow is hooked up and stretched, and Sam is in the suit - no helmet, standing outside the bike.
Wind is about 4-6 down course right now here at the 1/2 mile.
I'm hearing the announcer say that B ub is still at the 11 -- which I will assume means they'll turn around and run back here. Cool -- mayber a record run is in the offing. New news: Bub is still "in the safety zone for streamliners" down at the 11 mile, so that means Sam can't run yet. I wonder if maybe there's an issue down at the 11 -- thoughts of the old days, when the chute didn;'t deploy properly and racers got stuck in the soft stuff down there. It's only a guess, folks -- you're welcome to wonder right along with me. The course officials say it'll be something like 10 - 15 minutes before the course is clear for Sam.
Sam's got his helmet on - -

I don't know about the 2%, hell I think I got it from you (the blind leading the deaf?).
Will Rick be at WOS I hope? If not and he has sealed 5's with him grab one for the trailer and leave sealed. If he's only pumping and going to be there for WOS ask him if he can bring a sealed 5 or two with him for us when he returns. They can ship it (but of course there's the frieght and then the chance of the spot they put us in last time).
GO SAM GO!!!!

Go Sam Go!!!
2am.... man those guys must be tired!!
-
Here's a question that was just posed to me in an email: Is the Bub #7 running in the same class as the Ack bike runs? Maybe there's not a need for a 2% or 1% or whatever -- maybe Chris and Bub are running on something different. Who knows?
Todd -- roger your comment. I'll check it out.
-
Good LUCK!! Sam
-
Go get it sam :-D
-
Todd don't you have some work to do?
-
Sam's tow truck has started and is tensioning the tow rope. Bub is out of the way at the eleven -- no word on whether they'll return.
Canopy still open on #999. Engine not running yet.
FIM official vehicle moving into chase position.
Engine started on #999
Wind at 2 1/2 or less at all stations on the course. All courses shut down for Sam's run, just like the Bub runs. Stand by, folks.
-
Canopy down.
Sam starting to move out. Terry running to the tow truck.
They're under way!
-
Sam moving behind the rope.
Sam moving on his own.
ON the GAS!

Go SAM!!!!!

Go SAM!!!!!

Sam in #999 in mile two.
Nice little rooster tail at the three.
By the three, moving fast. Past the timing tower, in the measured mile.

Sam Wheeler runs through the measured mile at
323.627

Excellent run.

Sam has chute out and slowing safely. Interesting -- Sam just ran faster than the speed that stood as a record for how many years -- and it's not even within 10% of what he'd need to get today's record as the world's fastest motorcycle. Dang, this technology is something, isn't it?
-
SSS thank you for the updates!

Jon, this site is great! I don't know anything about motorcycles, and wonder about the genetic's of those that ride them, but WOW, I have new hero's. Good luck to all..............

ACK has it, Bub had it, Bub is looking to get it back..

the bub--ack-and ezhook all run in differant classes ezhook is a 1350 cc motor--ack is a 3000cc motor (2 motors) not sure about bub --they all hold the record in there classes --kent will correct me if im wrong willie buchta

Willie,
Kent told me to tell you that you are wrong. :-D
Sams runs a single ZX-11 engine about 1080cc's
Ack's has two 1299cc Hayabusa engines
Denis's bike runs a single completely designed custom one off engine and also is under three liters placing Ack and Denis in the same class.

It's helping my boring day at work go by and I'm not a MC type guy. Thank Jon, this is great.

WOW.. another phenomenal run. Good going Sam, Terry and crew, that's one single little baby motor in that bad boy. Appears the front wheel did well.
Shane... I hit print on something a minute ago so this is my job right now, (ok, that and the boss ain't here) so :-P
Freud, I have to vote for your photo if it were a contest. Ray's photo may be the best for the non racing public... but after being down the salt, the chance to see (and to have a vehicle fast enough for) the 8 mile marker in my sights... well that's a dream your picture is made of!
Jon, I can't believe this isn't the shootout...

Any new info on Bub 7?
-
Yeah, here's Bub information. I'll post this now and give you photos in a little while.
Chris said that the troubles started at the end of the run. He popped the pilot chute out and was slowing okay. Doesn't deploy the main 'til the bike slows, and when it was slow enough -- the controls were dead. He slowed with the pilot 'til about 60 mph, trying to shift down to slow down -- but the trans doesn't let him get away with it. Finally got down to about 60, put down the skids, and leaned over onto the right skid and slowed. He stood on the brakes -- but not 'til the bike was slow enough that the brakes wouldn't overheat.
Once stopped the fire crew was there and sprayed powder. Chris did not actuate the on-board system, but there was a fire in the engine area. Apparently there was an oil leak (first gues, investigation going on, I've got a few photos) that sprayed oil (again - my gues from overhearing) and that caught fire in the engine area.
The fire did not damage the chute -- the fire dameged the controls so the chute couldn't be deployed.
Post now and keep typing and I'll give you some photos. Crappy out of focus -- the camera is cranky this morning. Some are good -- I'll try to get better ones. The close up of the turbo shows the line that is suspected of having failed.
-
Wow,
350+ mph motorcycle and on fire..Chris set's yet another record.. :-o
-
So -- the Bub #7 is done for this meet. Dang -- that speed was sooooo close. Chris is saying the course was fine -- he was at 90 - 95% going into the measured mile, and part way through pinned it -- traction wasn't the problem this time. Stay tuned for next event, boys and girls.
John -- Chris didn't know he was on fire. He said there wasn't any smoke in the cockpit, no indication that there was a fire, the bottles didn't deploy. Sorta like George Poteet at the shootout last year. YEEEE-HAH!
-
There should be a manual (cable) over-ride for the main chute that the controls shouldn't have anything to do with. Could it have been damaged as well? Glad he is alright, the fire was contained and a safe stop was made.
Todd

Todd, I'll take your post over to Denis and have him respond!

so does Sam have to back his run up within the hour???

Todd, I'll take your post over to Denis and have him respond!
Thanks.. does that mean I can take a break, I've needed to go make a deposit at the bank and eat lunch since yesterday or the day before I think.

Crap, I just typed a 1/2 page, posted it and it got lost in cyber space. Now I can't remember what I wrote.
Any way great job Jon & Rat.
It really sucks not being there. After being in the timing trailer for 25 years it's tuff to wait for the results on the web site. I gotta figure out a way to make all of the events in the future. Keep up the great work Jon.
-
No sign of the Assen crew in the pit area -- perhaps they've headed home. Their pit was pretty big and easy to find -- but it ain't where it was. Many teams have left already -- only 3 1/2 hours left in the event. I'm looking for Leslie Porterfield right now. Her pit is pretty empty -- but I'm trying to find her to see if her 232 this morning is the top sit-on speed of the meet. We'll head to some of the pre-stage areas.
Todd, the number you're looking for is 459. And Rick does have 5 gallon cans of gas in the trailer that'll be here at WoS.
-
Glen, while you are at it, hook up the clocks to the Internet and then we won't have to have Jon post the speeds.

Great run Bub and excellent driving Chris! Sounds like he kept a level head!

Note to Denis: It's okay to add an extra day next year just for 'liners.
I've got two computers going. One for this, the other for that.
Nice job satisfying the masses out back home.
-
Freud, buts thats bonneville time
-
I doubt Sam would care to take the AMA record all he wants is the FIM World record and he did not qualify for it with his pass from earlier.
If Sam makes another pass it will be a down run and not a return run one would think.
JW,
Any comments from Sam about the Aluminum front wheel?
J
-
FYI.
FIA cars get only a single hour to run back through the clocks for the second half of a return run, the FIM bikes get 2 hours...not fair in my opinion.
-
Noonan, Ive said that for years. With todays vehicles(cars) they need TWO hours for turn around for FIA.
-
I think an all roadster meet is needed now. cook??

I just donated a page to cyber space on my first attempt at posting. Well, #$&^%$!! @!!, I'll just make it short and say thanks for the next best thing to being there. Ya'll that are enjoying all this frivolity, might think about a small bit of tribute to Jon and Nancy's favorite charity; namely, Landracing.com.
I would suspect a $10 spot would be a fair minimun for the last 4 hours entertainment. VERDAD?

I think an all roadster meet is needed now. cook??
Mike,
At Speedweek this year 698 runs were made (my count) by some sort of Roadster. I don't think this includes record runs, but not sure. I like your idea.

The salt's sorta busy during the time that the course is available.
FREUD

A weekend between Speedweek and BUB...maybe 3 days! :-D
Lynda
-
roadsteary, should look into it.
-
No, we didn't fall into the big hole in the Salt -- just been at the long course start line shooting the breeze withKen Sperry of the MV Agusta group. We think that we've pretty well solved most of the issues at hand, so we're back on our quest to find Sam Wheeler. It's only two hours twenty minutes 'til this event ends -- and there's no Sam at the start line.
As for having Mike Cook (or anyone) stage a roadster-only event -- Mike will probably stage an event for you if you approach him with all the necessary baackground, like a bunch of committed racers and vehicles, and a handful of money.
Rosey runs 192 and change -- still trying to get back to yesterday's 193
-
lets move the all roadster meet over to bonneville chat. and lets roll with it, sorry, lets spin with it .

D a m n, the system kicked my note out.
To be clear like mud.... :-D
FIA - 1 hour turn around - 1 percent faster than the existing record
FIM - 2 hour turn around - 1 percent faster than the existing record
For the BUB 7 means this - breaking AckAttack record - the are in the same class - 360 mph existing record - needs 364+ to get the record.
Sam is running in 1100 cc class - three class lower than Bub and AckAttack - a very soft record.
Also, if Sam like, he can run with his streamliner in the BUB and AckAttack class.
In the earlier time it was so - only for FIM - if someone set a record and the speed was higher than the next higher class record - this speed also count for this higher class.....this was only FIM - if FIM is still doing this, I don't know....
-
Sam Wheeler's bike is done for this meet. A long chat just now with him and Terry. There's a rear-wheel driven belt drive to a water pump that pumps cooling water onto the chain and the radiator and then dumps into the exhaust pipe to cool the stream. THAT pump has failed. So the bike is done for this event. Click to post to update you and I'll givew you some more stuff.
-
bummer - hope the engine survives and Sam can try for the shootout....and he need not so long to get this record as he need for the BNI record...
good for Sam - he knows now that the front solid wheel works - not anymore a safety issue for him.
-

More Sam Wheeler stuff:
The engine is a ZX11 motor, 1109 cc. The solid front wheel is working fine. I guess there was some moving around of the front on one of the runs -- but that was most likely due to the salt condition, not the front wheel and the way it works on the salt. That is -- other vehicles had similar problems. Today's run was fine.
The engine and all systems except that water pump are fine, with no reason not to make another run right now -- other than the exhaust stream is so hot without that cooler that it's damaging the bodywork. Here's a photo, I hope I hope. You can see the damaged plastic, the bad tape, the plastic covering over the body -- all showing heat damage:
-
Is this the bikini you're requesting, Pork Pie?
-
Nancy's bikini....I think this will work for Roland..... :-D .....may be pink will better match to Roland....Nancy, what you think....white or pink????
To Sam .... in the earlier time his displacement was under 1100 cc - so he runs the class from 1100 - 1500 cc, now....this is one class higher.....who got this record???
-
Thanks for the constant updates guys.
It has been great to keep up with the event as it happens.
Does make me want to be there though.
-
Speaking of Kiwis -- we have gone through the pits a couple of times and can find no sign of the A-Ward team, so I'll have to assume they've packed up and gone from the salt. And while we've found the compound where Leslie P. is pitted -- but can't find her or anyone to ask about that top speed of the meet issue.
It's getting sparse in the pits -- I'll hang up the 'puter for a couple of minutes and see if there's much of anyone in impound. Back in a while. The meet ends in about 70 minutes.
-
Has anybody heard how Chris Rivas ran on his H-D Roadglide, we were pitted next to him at Speed Week, great guy and a great tuner.
-
Wow, I just saw the this post is number 3000. Sure been a great way to enjoy LSR and meet new people. The web site and our weekly chat line has opened up the world for people to be introduced to what we love. It gets better everyday. Every one have a safe trip home. Excellent to hear the wheel went well. I knew they were spraying water on the chain, but had no idea they were using it as some kind of exhaust system cooler too :-o Do you know if this water is somehow circulated or if it's captured for just that run or is it a total loss system tha'ts plenty clear of the rear wheel?
...can't find her or anyone to ask about that top speed of the meet issue.
Guessing at this point, that will be Denis and Chris #7 :-D
Sounds like there's a good chance Leslie has the fastest sit on (openwheeled bike) speed for the meet though.
On top of still holding the fastest record on 2 wheels of any female in the world as well.

Still trying to find out if Wink Eller made it there and got to run- and what may have happened to his porposed partnership with Valerie Thompson to ride his bike.....
Thanks for the great info -
also - did Dale Gullett get any runs in today - saw he got a 171.+ yesterday, and don't know if it was on the bottle or not....
kiriakai
-
Okay, first of all -- Leslie Porterfield has the fast sit-on run of the meet, at 240 and a bit. She was pretty excited and didn't remember the numbers to the right of the decimal when Nancy and I found her going to impound. She's hoping to get in one more run.
-
Kiriakai:
Just talked with Dale in impound. He got another record on the bike, even though the bottle was just about empty. He did do okay with spray, though.
As for Wink -- yesterday he told me the story of Ray (wasn't that him) hitting the timing light and hurthing the front wheel, so they swapped parts from the old bike to the new one - and Wink was going to ride it. Just now the bike is in impound (I saw it -- didn't talk with them, sorry) and was being torn down for measuring - so that tells me that somebody did well.
-
Slim
FYI - Just before Speed Week (August 1) the Valerie Thompson Blog had a full page release - that showed the bike, the Cliff Gullett Memorial Sticker and a picture of Wink and Valerie - It said that she was to pilot the bole at BUB - She apparently has two records, and is currently the NHRA Pro Stock Motorcylce Rider and races for Team Marines in the NHRA.
Congrats to Leslie, if she got the meet record for sit-on rider.....
If he and wink are in impound, have they made both passes or do they have to clear impound and rerun.... and is the bike in impound winks bike or the parts of his bike on another bike.....
your info is great and i will be Pay-Pal-ing my appreciation and that of Team Bozeman Motorsports....
As you all know, today is the anniversary of losing Cliff, so it is a tought day here in Bozeman.

Probably not as my wife is having some minor surgery that week but will need me around for help.
Will be at World Finals and maybe the shoot out

Well, the meet is over, and in impound right now they're serving Swiss chocolates and chilled wine to all of the officials, except the FIM fellow -- he's getting crackers and warm water.

Darn, I guess I will have to go back to work now. Naa I think I will go work on the bike get ready for WOS.

We're heading back to the apartment. I've got the run logs, but they're delivered from the Rice Bros. 'puter in a format that my iMac doesn't recognize, so, as usual, I shipped 'em to Bob the Web Elf for farklization. He'll post 'em. Sure has been fun for me at this event.
I've got one big issue with which we all (both you folks and Nancy and I) must come to an understaning upon, and that's how to follow up this coverage at World of Speed -- when we'll be racing a bike as well as reporting. You weren't too happy with what I made available on this site at SpeedWeek -- so I'll try to work harder to give yoiu what you want -- within reason, 'cause first and foremost -- we're trying to get Nancy up over 200, maybe even to that magic 205 minimum for the Bonneville 200 MPH Club. Priorities!
Best regards from Nancy and me. We'll be on vacation for the next week and a half. We'll have the 'puter with us so we can be in touch, of course. Let me know if there's something I can do for you.

Keep Nanc hydrated, fed and plenty of muscle loosening massages as necessary. Oh, and have her practice tucking... TUCKING i said!
Get some sleep, hope the rocks don't come through the sleeping bags too bad and it doens't rain due to the leaky roof and all.
Drive safe now,

We had a fun week, had a great time, met new friends, some from continents away and learned more of what was happening ON the salt via Seldom Seen Slim and the net then we did physically being on the salt. Thanks again Jon and Nancy!
Too late for a record but certainly worth mentioning, Andy Sills ran the Dallas Honda production Honda CBR 1000 to a 199 and change measured mile!
Way to go John Dobbs with AMA and FIM 1350 A-BG 200+ mph naked record and Leslies 234mph AMA record and fast time of the meet.
It sucks I had to leave early today and miss the banquet. Congrats to all and thanks for a safe event.

Congrats Scott, nice job tuning that bike.

Todd:
Back to Sam Wheeler's cooling water system that failed: It's indeed a total loss arrangement. There's a tank in the rear of the bike that feeds the pump, which moves water to a set of six spray heads that shower on the radiator for improved cooling there. The water is also sprayed onto the chain for cooling. And the waste/used water is dumped into the exhaust pipe to a: dispose of it, and b: cool the exhaust stream. At speed I imagine it is all vaporized -- but from a test run in their pit the tarp on the ground was quite wet from it.

tuck - (sports) a bodily position adopted in some sports (such as diving or skiing) in which the knees are bent and the thighs are drawn close to the chest
make a tuck or several folds in; "tuck the fabric"; "tuck in the sheet"
tuck - a narrow flattened pleat or fold that is stitched in place
tuck - gather: draw together into folds or puckers
tuck - rapier: a straight sword with a narrow blade and two edges

Tom, got a bit of spare time on your hands, hey? You're darned quick with all of those definitions.
I won't tell you in this public forum just which of 'em I mean. PM me for the truth - if you dare!

I got home a while ago and I've been wading thru hundreds of emails, moving files from my laptop to my main computer and then reading this thread. Whew! I'm ready for bed already!
I wanna start off by stating that this was my first BUB meet and that I really don't know a lot about bikes, although I just had a rather intensive training course. Last time I owned a bike, I was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Tx. That was 1967. Been a while. However, I really appreciate the offer Jon made to have me shoot some photos while he was covering other things. It gave me a great sense of purpose and a great deal of pride in my work and satisfaction to get some shots that...well, some of 'em took a lot of effort to get to and fro, so to speak. But it was all very rewarding.
Then there was the frustrating part. I had zero web access all the time I was there. Well, this is gonna get fixed. For WoS, it's my goal to have a cellular modem setup like Jon has. I think this will help a great deal, since Jon and Nancy will be racing and I'll be able to report on their progress as well as other stuff while they're busy. Probably not as well as Jon, but have you ever watched that dude type? I swear I saw smoke comin from the keyboard. In any case, I should be able to overcome a somewhat awkward process: I'd go shoot a coupla hundred photos, choose the "pick of the litter" then edit 'em (which is really frustrating on a laptop with sun and glare etc. My eyes aren't what they used to be and I'd have to cover the windshield and side windows...and then I roasted) and when I got 'em done, I'd have to find Jon or he'd find me and I'd give him a USB thumb drive with the edited shots. Then he could put 'em in the photo gallery, and then I'd wander off to find more stuff to photograph and we'd repeat the process.
So. I'm gonna branch out a little so I can post my shots to the thread or to my server and add a link...or something so that the delay between the action and the photos getting there is minimized. I'll also be on more familiar territory at WoS where I can at least read the class abbreviations. I only found out a coupla days ago about the pushrod classes for bikes. Like I said, it was an intensive OJT session.
Having said that, I really enjoyed myself. I was a bit concerned, cuz I'd had some mystery infection that had me pretty miserable the previous week...but I wasn't gonna let that keep me from the salt and the cameras. As it turned out, the antibiotics I'd been taking seemed to have things pretty well under control and the only thing I suffered from was my normal shortness of breath (for those who don't know, I have some pretty serious cardiovascular issues...but the handicapped tag in my window sure comes in handy when looking for a parking place. <G>) I camped up on the flats above the Bend in the Road where the "peace and quiet" folks tend to hang out. Crow and Texican know what I'm talkin about. That was just fine. It got a little warm the last coupla days, but hell, it's the salt flats! What would I expect?
I'm gonna post one photo here and then try to get the shots on my own web server: http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2009/Welcome.html (http://www.chevyasylum.com/lsr/bsf2009/Welcome.html) I only have a day to do it, so I may have do an abbreviated version, but I'll get something on there. I'll be shooting the Vintage Cycle Fest at Miller's. I had the credentialing email in my in box when I got home, so I hope to have some nice shots of those nuts on the sidehacks. Last year was really something: http://www.chevyasylum.com/racing/racing2008/20080907/02_sidecar/sidecar.html (http://www.chevyasylum.com/racing/racing2008/20080907/02_sidecar/sidecar.html) I've got a bit better long lens (Canon 100-400 L Series) and should be able to get some closer, sharper photos from that one.
Anyway the shot I'm posting is (so far) my favorite. It's Sam Wheeler and Chris Carr shaking hands and wishing one another well before Sam's run. It seemed to capture the whole spirit of the meet, with petty disagreements set aside and true sportsmanship and competition displayed. After that, I'm gonna get a night's sleep and try to get some photos on the server before I go shoot another event and get farther behind.
Thanks to all of the wonderful people that I met there who really made it a wonderful experience. Just for the heck of it, many of my shots are in the Gallery: http://www.landracing.com/gallery/ (http://www.landracing.com/gallery/) Ok...I'm gettin goofy from fatigue (ya couldn't tell, could ya?) so I better get some rest.

Heck of a job, Ray. Nicely done. Thanks.
Same goes for you two, Seldom & Nancy.

Super big congratulations to Leslie for her 240 run & new personal best AND for going home with top sit-on bike speed! Good stuff there! (congrats to Scott Horner behind the scenes as well! ;) )
Looking forward to some write ups on the banquet & awards!

Outstanding! yup I agree! You captured one very special moment right there! ;)
Thanks for all of your hard work Ray! I know I for one have enjoyed it!!!
Giant thanks to Jon & Nancy for the play by play! It was awesome!!!
Debbie
PS: Jon & Nancy, start practicing getting up early along with your tucks! There's only a few days to get-er-dun (and we know you can!)! That NA bike likes the morning air so lets not waste that vital resource! ;) Besides, that will leave Nancy's afternoons free for her sun worship! :-D
-
Deb, you'd be pleased with how early we've been arriving at the Salt. There's one big thing in our favor for arriving in time for the first runs at WoS -- and that big thing is the sun. First runs can't go much before 8AM at WoS because of the time of sunrise. We've been getting to the salt before 8 most every day, mostly that late 'cause no runs took place before then. So -- by the time it's time to race -- we'll be in good shape. HAH, so there, nanny-nanny-foo-foo!
-
Oh goodie!!! That will work! 8-)
Heck, we take advantage of the time change when we get out there for Speed Week so it takes us half way through the week before it seems early! :-D

Was anyone warming up on Nitro when u shot it?

Been a long time since someone called me kid, but I'll take it. There's a file in yer email with that image in 11x14 form. Enjoy.
Matter of fact, I'll make it into a wallpaper file and donate it to whoever wants to use it. I created 7 different sizes with a coupla different aspect ratios and put 'em here:
http://www.chevyasylum.com/wallpaper/ (http://www.chevyasylum.com/wallpaper/)
That's my good deed for the day. :)
Oh....no nitro...just a flashback from my Carlos Castaneda consciousness-expansion days. ("Here, dude, chew another peyote button and see if you can manage not to puke yer guts out.) That probably explains a lot. :)

LOL LOL :-D Thanks.

I have been catching up on some of the postings during the Bub meet. One thing that keeps being incorrectly stated is the 1% rule. There is no such rule at least for FIM records. To break our record of 360.913 MPH you need to go at least 360.914 MPH timing is required to be accurate to 1/1000th of a second.
-
It sounds like a great week on the salts. Congratulations to all who attempted and those that set new records. Wish I could have been there.

This one percent rule was when Dave Campos set the record - it would be very strange if they done this rule off....FIM changed a lot over the last years - also they had a freeze on a lot of classes and records - but I never saw a note that this rule was changed....
Could be that there is a confusion between FIM and AMA rule.
May be Mike Stanton who is a specialist for two wheels records can clarify this.

Porkpie the FIM rules link is posted on the Bub site just point out where the 1% rule is located. We have traveled half way around the world trying to get this record have had this record, lost this record, regained this record and I believe we know the rules. The rule may have applied long ago when timing equipment and surveying was not as accurate as today.

Working on a couple of stories for Thunder Press and Salt Addiction. Got lots of great static shots from the pits but...I don't have one of those big bazooka lenses. Anyone got any shots of the Bub and EZ Hook streamliners in action? Please PM me or email me at: author@rocky-robinson.com if available for use.
Thanks!

Soooo.....
How bout some commentary about the awards given, who got what and how was the banquet?
-
The awards banquet was very good....outstanding food.....a little long due to the auction......due to the
economy the dollar prices were down, in fact the dollars ($1600) we put up for the sidecar classes is now
one of the bigger ones. John Renwick from the UK. got the $800.00 for the fastest streamliner sidecar,
(we gave him cash this year due to the fact when he won the money last year, buy the time the various
taxes were payed for both US. and UK. he got $500.00) Fritz Egli from Switzerland won the dollars for the "normal" sit-on sidecar. (208+ mph. on a Turbo/Busa...."wheel on a stick" outfit).
Actually, the fastest streamliner sidecar was Craig Anderson (Peg Leg Craig) but he was test running his outfit on "Run what ya brung" which did not count for the dollars.
I plan to increase the sidecar dollars for the 2010 BUB......I have been trying for many years now to get more interest in LSR sidecars, this year at the BUB we had 11 outfits competing for records and dollars....
so I have been somewhat successfull. If we can get some of our roadracing sidecar racers to come an play with us on the salt......we should see some outstanding speeds for the future. For the last couple of year we have had Rick Murray and his passenger wife Nida racing on the salt with us...Rick and Nida have been the main driving force in N.American sidecar roadracing, in fact they upped their record by 10mph this year on the salt...
-
Thanks for this thread... It was a blast reading and reliving. This was my first time to the salt and will definitely not be my last. I ran RWB and was elated to get 104+ on my 76 KZ and looking forward to learning and improving the bike for next year as we where only able to spend Monday on the salt.
Thanks again for the great thread and look forward to a years worth of learning and working on the bike.
-
Thanks Kaz. It's been a wonderful experience. I am addicted to salt and fast motorcycles! I'm not even close to being done yet.
The awards banquet was very nice. Big Congrats to Chris Carr and Dennis for the Top Speed Award.
Also to Fritz Egli. He struggled all week with handling issues. He is quite a gentleman, and I have my autographed copy of his book in my office. I hope to see him back next year!
I got a chance to dress up and wear my new red dress. Belen and I were comparing our manicures- we both had black nails from working on bikes. I think I heard 19 women racing on the salt this year??! Super cool stuff.
Fun time! I wish this pesky thing called work didn't take up so much time. I could race more :-) Wish I was at WOS now!
-
All of the men at the banquet will remember the red dress for some time!!! :-o

There were 19 women and they stayed late for a group shot for which all of us were greateful.
And here they are.

2009 AMA records are up on the Bubs website

Leslie, Nancy and I are glad you are NOT here at WoS. As of right now -- an hour or two before the end of qualifying -- Nancy holds the women's top speed of the meet, and therefore is in line to get a trophy. I hope I'm not jinxing her -- but Bud McManus has already been to our pit to talk about what information and photos they need to make the trophy.
But if you had been here -- well, all bets would be off, for sure. Nonetheless -- yes, you're missing some good times and short lines. Will you be at World Finals?
-
I am super happy for her!
Nancy- you kicked butt!!!
I wish I could have made it to WOS, but maybe WF....
I'm rolling change now to pay the entry fee. Luckilly I found a bunch of quarters. I might just make it!

Also-
Thanks for the great reports from the salt. I'm going through full salt withdrawals now-
and I want to see pics of speedy and her new trophy on here soon

Leslie, here's the only photo I've got handy just now. We'll have more later -- but it's bedtime in Wendover. Thanks for the good wishes, everyone -- she appreciates hearing from you all.
