Title: SCTA Membership or Club Membership?
Post by: Papi on July 17, 2009, 02:09:02 PM
For Motorcyclists ONLY:
As a n00b to SCTA, what is the deal with membership?

Do you have to belong to a Club before you can become a member ?
OR   :?
Can you just be a Member of SCTA without a club affiliation?

How do other Motorcycle Class folks do it?

If you want to race at El Mirage for a record or points you need to belong to one of the twelve clubs (SDRC is best for the bikes)

If you just want to run at Bonneville then all you need is a BNI and SCTA membership, if you are in a club for more than a year I believe that you so not need to pay for SCTA BNI dues however with your BNI membership you will get the tube with all of the goodies..

What bike...what class....?

John, I am exploring right now either P or Modified Production in the 1600cc Class.

If you run in MC Class, could you send me a PM? I am looking for advice on a number of fronts as a n000b.

Jon (forum admin) has offered up a lot of advice so far, so I am pretty close to knowing which designation, and it is looking like P so far.

The Club Part is something I don't quite get though, although I am sure it can be handy for networking.
Does the club you mentioned have a website or contact?

The clubs are a necessary part of running El Mirage meets.  I don't know where you are, so don't know if running El Mirage would be important to you.  There is no promoter or paid help -- the club members do all the work.  That's why you need to be a member to run there and hold a record.

The clubs vary in terms of socialization -- but almost ALL club members have duty assignments during a racing year.

SDRC is a little technology challenged. As a member I can say that.

Pepi, Glen's the guy who times and certifies your runs. In Noonan's case we use an hour glass with rocks mixed in with the sand.

Wrong Kent, the Gear Grinders are the best Club. Besides Noonan's head is where the sun don't shine. Sorry Papi, wrong key.

Oh, Papi, don't let them give you too much of a bad time.  Glen's right about the Gear Grinders (you're safe in assuming that that's the club to which I belong, too). . .

. . .But Glen, although the GG is made up of a large number of folks, the name "Gear Grinders" is singular, so it should have said "...the Gear Grinders IS the best club."

Ah, it's great to be an English major.

Papi,

Here are a couple of links that I recently found useful.  These are articles were written by a former dragracer, Scott Horner of Heads Up Performance, who is now doing the LSR thing.

Good luck,

Buzz

(Hiding from the rocks)

Glen, those are not rocks you are using it's your ear wax mixed in with sixty years of old salt and dirt..

Pay no attention to Kent he can't even follow proper directions on how to pull the chute..(little one first not at the same time)

And Fred...well poor Fred most likely won't remember what he said tomorrow... has a bad case of CRS

Hey, Glen -- here's what we could do.  I'll reset the Forum registration page so it requires everyone to list his club affiliation, if any.  Then we'll ask the question about which club is best.  Then we'll program the machine so that members of any particular club are prohibited from voting for their own group.

Yeah, that'd work.  I expect we'd get about four or five folks responding.  Whaddaya think about that?

Did Kent or Scott mention SDRC is the best club yet ?

So I take it that SDRC is the best Club?  :-D
You guys are to funny...

Now is SDRC a club that is centric to El Mirage and Bonneville, or just El Mirage? And is the club more MC centric?
And can someone get me some info about SDRC by the way.
Being in NorCal, I don't think we have any "clubs" up here. If a representative of SDRC want's to talk with me about a NorCal extension, I would good to go with that as well. But as of now, I don't know anything about anything in regards to LSR Clubs.

I am in San Mateo, which we like to think of as Northern California. I was a member of the SDRC for a number of years before I was asked to leave. The Milers, on the other hand put me out after only one year. I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to which club has the higher standards. I'm now a Rod Rider.

Well, Papi, some of the clubs are pretty strict about where members may live, and others have more generous interpretations of how close one must be.  For instance -- I live about, oh, 2,500 miles from the GG meetings -- yet they accepted me.  I don't attend meets at El Mirage more than once in a great while -- so I don't do any volunteer duties at meets there.  I pay a different annual membership fee than do members that are close in.  I think I'm an associate member (meaning I pay different and live a long ways away).  Other clubs might accept distant members, but I'm not sure of which does and which doesn't.

The Gear Grinders bylaws were updated this year and anyone that wants to be a member must attend a meeting, fill out the applications etc. There are a great club as are all of them. Gear Grinders Sidewinders,SDRC are the biggest clubs. All run a lot of vehicles with 2, 3, or 4 wheels. The Gear Grinders take out of area members including Canada.

We have a lot of fun on this web site and tend to pick on each other now and then. For information it's the place for new people to start. We are all serious racers and volunteers that make the meets happen. Always feel free to ask questions, well maybe not Noonan. He has ZERK fittings in his jaw joints that are in need of a re-lube.

The really good thing about the SDRC is the membership's  belief in  the following:

Tempering arrogance, deflating pomposity and promoting humility

Oh, I see -- a little bit of humor there, Stan.  A VERY little bit.

To tell the truth I wasn't an English major.  My degree is in Liberal Arts, with a very heavy slant towards the physical sciences.  Doesn't every Lib Arts grad take engineering physics and math through differential equations -- right alongside music studies and Greek and Roman mythology?
