My 10yr old daughter, Mariana helped me get the bikes ready for El Mirage and it seemed like her interest sparked a bit. When we went through Tech Inspection, she was following Noonan around watching a lot but didn't say much. On the way home she said "could we race that '50 in the backyard if we fixed it up?".
Last night she came out to the garage and said "we have to do this thing in school where we get up in front of the class and demonstrate how to do something...mommy said I could show them how to Tech a bike for a land speed race"
awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!

Hook, Line, & Sinker!
Starting her young, so has no hope to be a 'normal' girl now!!
-
Mariana, you have no idea how proud you made your Daddy.
We hope for that response from our son.
We are ecstatic when it comes from a daughter.
Mom will shake her head and sigh.
Dad will have tears in his eyes.

I'm jealous! I wish I could have that happen to my girls! But, the dragster is a little to hands-on and my girls aren't quite old enough to trust to be running around at the drags without being next to me. You're lucky!

My oldest daughter made her first trip to the salt when she was 5 months old and my youngest when she was 10 months old. They are now 12 years old and 6 years old. they have not missed a trip to the salt in their lives and love going. They have friends out there that they only see when racing, and start counting down the days as soon as school lets out in June. Our type of racing is great for family and it is nice to have the girls interested in somthing I am, because for the rest of the year it's the Jonas Brothers, being locked out of all the bathrooms, too much make-up, and outfits I don't think are fit for them to be wearing. How long is it until Speedweek?

shane madison asked sheri if she could bring the race bike to show and tell--sheri called the school and asked---the principle said only if all of the classes could attend---sheri took the bike to the school and was surprised how much the kids new about racing nos and bonneville ---a good time was had by all willie buchta

I took my boy (Devin)last year to speed week for the first time he's 13 now, he helped in the timing tower, helped the Rice Bro's pickup 3 miles of wire, ran around with Jim Dunn one day, helped Dan W put up signs in the pits, even helped pickup parts on the course, oil downs ect he had a ball. we havnt even started to run the roadster yet, I think he is hooked already. :-D

Remember that thread a while back asking where all the younger racers were going to come from? Doesn't sound like there's going to be a problem.

I remember when the first Fast and Furious movie came out. My oldest daughter was 13. She came home talking all about "naus". I had a blond moment and couldn't figure out what the hell she was talking about so I ask her "what is naus". She says"you know dad,the blue thing you have in the trunk of your hot rod. Oh... you mean nitrous oxide.
I didn't know that the younger generation was saying what they read on the bottle.

We have mystery readers come to my daughters school and read a story to the class. I went on Halloween wearing my drivers suit, shoes, gloves and helmet. I wanted to grab the interest of the boys and test out the two way radio gear.
I set up the push truck unit on a desk at the far side of the room and read over the throat mic radio with the visor down. The kids were not sure what to think. But, after a bit the boys started to inch there way forward, actually scooting the chairs up. I had them ask questions through the radio so I could check how well I could hear.
Test worked well. I had a blast. The kids asked good questions and I pushed my reading agenda every chance I could. I kept my gear on until I was outside again to keep the mystery reader intact.
Next school year I will ask about bring the car! :-D

Below are mine helping dad strap in. My little pit crew. My favorite question from them lately is, Dad can we work on the truck this weekend? Brings a tear to my eye.

My wild child - counting the days till he can ride one of these. He has printed this photo out and carries it around in his backpack. I think his friends are tired of him talking about it.

Great stories guys and gals

Last September at World of Speed, there were several bus loads of school kids from Salt Lake.
Pleasant, bright kids with a genuine interest and intelligent questions. Their interest wasn't focused on streamliners and bikes either, they seemed to appreciate everything.
V8Pinto ....... you have a keeper! Hoping for a similar experience with my granddaughter.

I've been going to the Dry Lakes & Bonneville since 1978. I was 22 at that time working in Gieslers Stude, and McKinney's Sundowner Corvette along with a few others.

My Boys Kevin 24 & Ryan 27 have been going since they were 4 & 6 years old. Kevin just made his 1st rookie runs at El Mirage last weekend with a best speed of 165 mph. He also earned his "B" licence at Bonneville last year with a best speed of 190 mph all the time figuring out a new car too.

wow, look how young Mckinney is, he was old when I met him LOL I think he like 79 80 now Dynoroom should know how old he is. thats right he's a 49er forgot about that.

Gary is 45. The first year he went he spent in the Vesco pit. He was 10 years old.
Don and Norma looked after him the entire week. Don handed him the mike for the CD and he
learned trucker talk in 5 days.
He also had some small assignment on the bike 'liner and was introduced to Bonneville at a unique level.
It was a unique situation. I have never been able to repay the Vesco's.

Awesome thread! Shane, I'm beyond jealous! Joel, I still absolutely LOVE that picture! I think I'm going to need an 8x10 for our home LSR wall of that one. It's a keeper for sure!
Shane, I was that girl as a child. Always helping Dad with a wrench in my hand. Encourage her & teach her! Little hands are an asset with these bikes! ;)
Somehow I ended up with a 15 y/o primadonna girl that rolls her eyes at the thought of the bikes. She's happy at the track if she can have her phone, ipod, computer & broadband internet. :| Our lives are so deeply entwined with the shop and our racing so it would be awesome if she had even the most remote interest. She may well end up with us in Bonneville this year. I'm not sure what I'll do with her. I might sell her to Glen for slave labor in the tower. At least it involves a computer! LOL I'm hoping she'll come around when she gets her drivers license and discovers she's got the go-fast gene!

Very cool.
We have two kids, Allison 10 (no she wasn't named after an automatic transmission), and Tom 8. In my avatar you can see Allison posing with me at Bonneville last year. My wife keeps track of pictures, so I don't have any right now. Tom helps me with tire changes and other tasks, and Allison helps me get suited up. We have drug the poor little "ratlettes" their whole lives to races, as far away as Bowling Green, Kentucky. They weren't at Elmo last week because they had Soccer and Softball finals, but normally you will see them with us. That's why we use a motorhome as tow vehicle to keep them with us (and safe) as we race.
Tom will be an interesting case. He has no fear and loves going fast. Allison? Well, she has other interests, but she likes helping where she can.

that was a 55 gal of wine wasnt it. :-o I love Duane I've had many good times with him and Dave over the years

Shane, when you were talking earlier about the flatty motor for the 4 door , for possibly a ride for the future big time racer, remember, learing the art of racing also includes the tickets, the insurance, and the other expenses...........and your,,," Daddy please? " LOL Crow

Hey Dad,
How about posting that picture of you and me at Elmo, when I was really little?

This is a great discussion, lots of positive stories.
At Speed Week '07, one of my crew members, Soren, brought his 14 yr old daughter Haley. She had begged to join her Dad, how could I say no to a cute girl who chose to spend a week with a bunch of middle aged men and their toys. She had a blast and enjoyed meeting all the racers and helping out where she could. We enjoyed having such a positive spirit in our pits. I believe it was also an opportunity to show a young lady how she should expect to be treated with respect from men in the future.
Haley was crushed when we could not attend Speed Week last year due to my motorcycle accident.
This August, Haley will turn 16 and is more excited than ever to return to the salt!

Remember that thread a while back asking where all the younger racers were going to come from?
If said person had scrolled down to the Upcoming Birthdays, they might have noticed at the time that there was a 20's something and 70's something on the page. (at this moment, the spread is just 29 and 67.)
Happy birthday to all and great work on being ambassadors to the sport to the next generation.

This one is when we were helping the Kugels with the roadster. Ryan is in the drivers seat waving and Kevin is standing on the trailer. This was around 1995, so Kevin would be 9 and Ryan 12 or so.

isn't Glen holding a class this year in the tower for all the youg people to learn how to work the tower and yell at people on the radio LOL
-
KIDS of all ages might enjoy that from time to time--
-
Mkilger, never mess with the old guy that has control of the MIC. They have ways to get even with the entire crowd listening. Yelling comes from having kids. Training them under the old ways is no longer PC. I was told the board of education across their butts was the fastest way to their young brains.

there now and look forward to Bonneville every year. I have a 17 yr old eager to make a few passes also.
