Don't tempt me, Terry.  But for now -- you're right, I haven't filtered out that word.

So - on to other things -- I presume we'll have the pleasure of seeing Cyndia in two weeks?  And the (dubious) pleasure of seeing you, too, but she's a heck of a lot easier on the eyes than you, you know.  We'll be arriving Thursday night and staying at the Pine Acres.  Going to have two bikes with which to play...  Oughta be fun -- first time in years that we've started the season with bikes to race.

See you soon.

Crow,, we have no idea what that helmet is made of, but Tommy broke 2 bits trying to drill a hole to mount the grenade/nut to the top,,,, ended up using the plasma cutter to get a hole in it.

Hope to get some more pics once the  body is fitted on.

cajun...how can it be "kinda of a rat rod" without rust? And paint too.
Title: Re: Look at my 38 Dodge King Cab !!
Post by: Cajun Kid on May 07, 2009, 06:22:43 PM
J Six,,  Ok it is not a rat rod "per say"  it is a " Un-Rusto Rod" or an Old Skool Rod,

Or just an old 38 Dodge Truck, made into an extended cab, chassis Z'd in back, dropped front axle and top chopped, with an old skool  327/300 style motor !!!!  oh year we just knocked the dents out, saned a little rust out and sprayed some  "Flattened Charcoal/Smoke Gray Metallic" Paint on it..

So really, I don't know what to call it,, maybe when I am done Y'all can tell me what it is ?

"DIFFERANT"  is what I was after..

Almost done... should be ready to test drive next weekend.

Here are todays pics.

NO it is not black.... it is "Smoke"  with some silver metal flake and flatner.. in the sun you can see some of the flake, not much,, it is more of a flat charcoal gray color paint,,, not black and not primer,, just a bit odd and unique is what I was after,,,, plus adding the quarter windows and stretching the cab allows plenty of leg room...

Eric, I know I can't weld, do body work or paint,,,, what I do have is access to some fine friends and folks that can do all of that... I can just "imagine" what I want,,, then consult others on my vision,, listen to Joe (my crew chief) tell me how stupid my ideas are etc... and in the end what comes out seems to be OK...(at least I think so and I like them ).

Joe and me are still working up some lettering and graphics options for the truck.

I think it may be  "themed" to go with the Vicky and the Studebaker, kinda the Push/Tow or shop truck for
Venable Rods and Racing  ( The Team colors are Satin Black cars with red and white lettering) I think the truck in Smoke Gray is close enough to black to work in this motif ??

Thanks for the good words.

See you in June ?

Charles

Either I'm out of the loop or being singled out for special treatment coz I've heard you call it "that truck" , "vehicle number 22" and even  "the thing I'm doing up for you as a favor for being my friend".....all those things but never " a Rod"......

currently on the fundamentalists forum there is some argy bargy goin on about Trucks....

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195580&highlight=bobber     ..... apparently , not only are you not allowed to build certain types of "Rat-Rods" you aren't even allowed to THINK about building them......and I thought we beat those people in the war.......

personally I think you should get Mick(with the  green '34 truck) to paint it , I hear he has a new brush.

oh yeah, your's looks great Chuck.

Charles, very nice looking truck.
It's hard to tell from the pictures, but is your air cleaner cover a WWII French helmet ?
The grenade is a cool touch ...
Title: Re: Look at my 38 Dodge King Cab !!
Post by: Cajun Kid on May 24, 2009, 11:46:02 AM
Steve,, the helmet is WWII  but not sure from where,,when Tommy was trying to drill the holes to mount the Grenade/Nut set up and the 50 Cal clips, it broke 2 or 3 drill bits,,, He ended up using a plasma cutter to put a hole in that hard brain bucket.

It I decide not to run it for long,,, I may take it out back and see how it holds up to a 9mm, .45cal and a .308 !!!

Naw just kidding,, it looks cool, but with my  Team Push/Tow Truck motif, I may add a Super Charger or Gasser hat to it in place of the WWII Lid...

Still working on the lettering/graphics !!  Man my mind is warped... LOL

Joe,,, 4 Sure,,, all the $$$ and time and attention will be focused on the Stude now,,, 100% (well excpet for getting the Vicky to make a full throttle pass at Maxton in June)  I am not sure if it's a hick up in the ignition or the carb yet.. Hope to get Carb apart and look again... then take to the Chassis Dyno with my Motor Guy.. to get it right before we load up for Maxton....

Other than that,, 100% focus on the Stude,,, Goal is to debut it at Maxton in Sept....

See ya in JUne ?

I will probably be there in June I am not sure in what capacity. Maybe just a spectator/photographer as I will have just begun my radiation treatments for the prostate cancer and I am not sure how I will react to that process.  I did reserve a room today, so I hope to be there.

Today may be the day we can test drive the Truck....The back glass, rear side glass and windshield got put in last night.

The door glass is being a royal pain in the ASTON MARTIN.... Then need mirrors and should be ready....

Motor ran well and sounds good,,, just need some fine carb tuning after a break in period,,, seems like the carb is rich out of the box (like every one I have ever seen)

PJ  , I have not figured out a removable bumper set up yet... Just having fun with the ole 38 Dodge pickup.

May do a bit more pinstriping, may even have something painted on the Moon's (not sure yet).

Well back from vacation,,,, time to get some more work done on the Stude and do some upgrades on the Vicky.

Tonight Joe and I  installed the ISP  "Stealth" Head and Shoulder Restraint system on my seat.  Now the seat cover does not fit so good, I have to take the seat to  Ray Hester ("Upo Man") early this week so he can modify the cover to fit around the head restraint, so Joe and I can get it back in the Vicky this weekend.

I eventually ran 11 mph over my best at Maxton after making my planned sprocket change Saturday afternoon.  Earlier I ran my usual 120 before pooping out around 10,000 rpm due to too tall a gear ratio.  Plus 1 on the rear got me to 127 and some more tips on body position from Shane, thank you, and I bumped to 131.9 mph.  When I ran 131.9 I was at 11,200 rpm which is about as far as i want to take her.    I also want to thank the racer 2 spots over who took the time to help me with my sprocket change.  Next time I will go ahead and remove the caliper from the bracket.  It was easy off but a bit of a pain on reassembly.

With a half mile less to work with at Maxton, and probably no tailwind I will need to shorten the ratio a bit more but I only need 122.5 there.  I think I am finally starting to get a grip on gearing and my technique is slowly improving as well thanks to a lot of patient racers.

Great job Milt... hope to see you set the record at Maxton in Sept...

With proper gearing, a cool morning, and good position on the bike,,,,, you CAN go 125.xxx and get the record by a few MPH.. not just a few 10th's... you don't need no stinking tail wind.. you can do it... (hmm, but the tail wind can sure help... lol)

See you soon.

That's a nice looking truck.  Motorbooks has published a few books on the history of lake racing.  This truck matches the style of the older lake cars in the book.  It is a Traditional Rod.  One things missing.  A wolf whistle on the manifold.

Wobbly, thanks... That is what I was trying to recreated.  Something "that might have been" and staying on my Team Motif  (like the Vicky and the new Studebaker)

As an aside,,,  My Crew Chief  "Nitro" Joe Atwell  came up with a paint scheme  that sticks with the Team  Satin Black with Red and White,,, yet adds a bit of ZIPP,, to the look of the car... Spoke with our painter and he feels good about the slight change..

I can't wait to unveil the car...Hope in September for Maxton,, but for sure in October..

To the folks that follow my Studebaker build diary... I will post all the build pics as we continue to make progress, But I "may" not publish any pictures of the final paint job/assembly until it debuts at Maxton.. (potential Magazine deal has asked me to hold of on me showing off "finished exterior" pictures)..
