I'm familiar with drilling bolts and general safety wire technique, but how does one safety wire a spin-on oil filter? It has no tabs or flanges that could be drilled. :?
-
Alsays wondered about that myself.
-
If I were to do that, I'd make a retaining clip that holds the bottom of the filter, then safety wire the retaining clip.
-
Rap a large hose clamp around the filter, and wire to it. Been doing it for years on road racers and not one has come loose. (YET)

we drilled a .040 hole in the crimp and wired to that... worked OK... no problem
-
Thanks for all the fast replies, guys! If the crimp looks too thin to drill and hold, I'll use the hose clamp method.

I think it's the K & N brand -- that has a hex fastener head on the top of the filter, and I think I remember that said hex is drilled for a safety wire. If not K & N -- someone else, but one of the bigger names in the filter world.
Dick's hose clamp method is by far the most common method to safety wire the oil filter.
-
K&N makes them. I didn't check to see if they are drilled for safety wire but I think it would be easy enough to drill. http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm (http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm)

Every motorcycle sanctioning authority I know of accepts a hose clamp aroung the filter that is then safety wired to the bike ... I have used this method in the past but it is hard to beat the K&N filters with the integral nut already drilled for wire.

Problem with the K&N, is the safety wire is 5" or so from any thing to tie it to on most engines

hose clamps used here!

Enough about yourself, how do you hold the filter?
-
zip ties and duct tape...... with an occasional dry wall screw!

Turns out K&N does make one that fits with the pre-drilled top knot. Thanks again for the info!
