YUP, he's right about the alkali. We ran the NAE at Black Rock, October 2007. We're still reviewing the possiblity of final runs at BR but are looking at Alvord and Diamond Valley too..........Ed

Maybe it's because I've only been there later in the year but I've never encountered any of the flies he talks about on my many trips to Black Rock. Spiders in abundance (in the scrub on the shoreline and in Gerlach) and the odd rattlesnake or two. In fact, on a trip down the dirt road from Soldier Valley one evening I managed to run over one and turned it into a snake rug! Still - not as bad as one of the TV crews who managed to do the same with a cow on the run up from Reno. Agree with Ed about the dust storms. We had a few in 97 that stopped proceedings for a while. Even with a mask, so much of it got up my nose that it caused me problems that took two years to heal up properly afterwards. Not very cool or interesting suffering from 'desert nose'!! :-D
Cheers
