Title: PROBLEMS
Post by: MAZDA1807 on February 20, 2009, 09:21:35 PM
Hello everyone, I have a problem.  The problem consists of not being able to "disable" the notify tab.  It says it is dissabled but I still recieve messages on the topic.  How can I resolve this problem?

I never have used that -- or even paid attention to what it can do.  I'll look at it later on - and see if there's something that I have to do with it.  Thanks for the comment.

Peter,

I turned on Notification for the Bonneville General Chat for myself.... once I see how it works, I'll turn it off and see what happens.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Like I noted before I could not get back into the forum with Bak189........now using my wife's E-Mail
using 1194.......However, I have to keep login in each time, even thought I first indicated that I wanted to be logged in "forever"...........................
What is going on??????????????????

Wow.  I goi away from the computr at the hosue and all sorts of gremlins come for a visit.  I'm please to see that Bob is keeping an eye on the things that are happeneing.  Just now, for instance, when I'd click the back button after reading a post - I'd get returned to the list of unread posts (as if I had clicked "show unread posts" anew, not as if I had just returned to where I was last time).  But when I click the "read unread posts" button - that works okay.

Jon Amo's here at the Reunion.  Maybe he's got a pocket full of glitches that he captured over the years when the site was his -- and they're getting loose and back into the system. We'll try to keep things under control.

Jon,

The solution is simple.  Don't leave the computer at the house.  Stay home.

Re: the login problem.... Bak189/1149, try it now.

There was a switch to set cookies on your computer, I flipped it and now I can stay logged in, even if I mosey away then come back.

I don't know about the 'forever' part, though. :-)

Just don't hit the 'logout' tab.

Let us know if that works for ya.

Okay -- new issue, old thread.  I like to be conservative when starting threads.  Anyway --

I've received a couple of emails in the last day or two complaining that the photo-poster thingie wasn't working -- kept giving messages like "file too large" or such.  So -- Bob has refarkulated the system so said problem shouldn't happen to you.  If you do have issues -- as usual, contact me and I'll see if I can fix it  - or have Bob fix it.

Ta-ta for now.  Got a family wedding tomorrow and a crowd of visitors here at the house, so bear with me if my responses are a bit tardy.  NO, by the way, we won't have Nancy modeling the pasty pasties at the reception tomorrow night.

Crud -- another new problem.  Glen reports that he was typing the response to a post, clicked to send, and got the message that someone had posted a response while he was typing.  Okay -- so when he went to hit send anyway -- "send" wasn't available for him to hit.  He'd have to go back and clear the reply and start over.

Yes, it's possible to click and save the message information -- but that doesn't explain why he got the strange message response.  Anyone else have this happen?  I'll have Bob look into it if it happens to you folks.

Back to the pasties, which Wes Potter says lok more like perogies.

Okay, so here's the scoop.....I am not really complaining about the computer.. how ungreatful that would be to everyone (Freud and John Langlo), who have tried to help me get out of isolation!  The frustration is that the computer is supposed to be, (actually is), smarter than me and should understand my feeble attempts to write, say, do something and send it or post it!  So, you're not gonna hear anything more when I have a breakdown in communication with the computer.
So, my heartfelt apology to you Glenn for hurting your feelings.

No more grumbling,
Lynda

When I try to log on to page 23 on Marlo's build diary it is a blank white page. Page 22 and others come up like it should. I've tried several ways, like from page 22 and from the list and the results are the same last night and several times again today. It looks like a header is there but no page info.
Maybe it's on my end??

I think I remember that blank page -- from the past.  I don't know why it happens, but, as usual, wil refer the problem to Bob, the Web Elf.  Look, by the way, at the avatar on his posts -- it's a single wheel motorcycle.  I know he rides trials, but that's going way too far (in my modest opinion).

I'm going to resurrect this thread to ask if any of you have received "spam" like the one that another of the Forum regulars did today.  It was in the form of an email from a guy/company that said he wanted to help get landracing.com listed on foreign search engines -- and so on.

I get these frequently and almost always just dump them into the spam folder (which teaches the Apple here to automatically call them spam (and don't bother to show me).  You're welcome to do the same -- or if you're not positive you may send them to me and I'll look and decide.

The one thing I can't do, though -- is guarantee that you won't somehow get such an email.  I do not give out the names or addresses of folks on this site -- but as you all know, if you register as a user you can search the listing of members and thereby get email addys and such.

Thanks for being Forum members, boys and girls.  And -- Happy Thanksgiving.

I get the same thing on certain computers, but others, no.

This computer (my tuning notebook, Dell, Win XP) works fine with Google Chrome, a free web-browser written by Google.  I do know that one computer I have with MS Internet Exploder (sic) does the Dancing Box routine.

It looks like it is only the newer versions of IE that have issues. That's rather common with the new browsers to behave badly on older technology sites (not a slam of anykind intended). There is an option on the new IE8 to view a page in "compatibility mode" just to the right of the address bar. It will only show on pages that may benefit from them. Pressing that may solve the problem. I don't have IE8 loaded on my DEV box at work, so I can't test it.

So, Jon, how come the countdown to racing 2010 says we're racing?  Are we racing to the countdown?   You know these guys think they've got lots of time to get ready (which they don't) but that countdown to Speedweek helps keep them working away!

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  Thanks for all that you do for each other!

Title: Re: PROBLEMS
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on November 24, 2009, 06:13:36 PM
Lynda, that's a good question.  Here's my response:  Unh, I forgot.  Well, not really -- I remember doing the math and telling Bob what the date for the beginning of SpeedWeek '10 would be -- by guessing.  That is, I made some EWAGs about when the event would start, this being done before they correct dates were announced, and those are what I sent to him so he could reset the calendar.  I offered the caveat that I wasn't sure of the dates -- and, well, I guess he decided that doing nothing was better than having the incorrect countdown clock settings.

I've just gone to the SCTA site and see that SpeedWeek is 14 - 20 August, so I'll take another minute (once I post this) and do the math and send away the results to the Bobster and see how he does on resetting the clock.  By the way, I'll ask him to use 7AM of the first day of racing, Wendover time, as the hour and date that the event starts.  For someone like you that'll be on duty a few days in advance - well, allow some latitude in your interpretation.

By the way, here's where I come up with the answer (263 days, not including the half-day or so 'til 7 in the morning from right now):

Jon, I always allow latitude, umm...sometimes I allow latitude...uhhh..sometimes people wish I allowed latitude... okay, so I don't normally allow latitude, but start time for Speedweek..now THAT I can do!!

That is the reason why I have banned Microsoft on my computers... I had many crashes. spam, browser crashes, weird things happen and I wont even go into the WIndows software packages....

Changed ALL my computers to a free operating system called Ubuntu - has same type of desktop as a windows machine, look and feel are great... Has all FREE software, FREE operating system, FREE Upgrades and just by chance you need to run a windows program you can thru a program called Wine..

Things run MUCH faster, less hassel and stable as heck.... Most important for me ALL the software is open source which is free and there is some really neat stuff out there.

Bob reports (about the Photo Gallery):

The database is there, I can get at it through the control panel (etc) but the code is not able to connect.

It looks like the "datasource" is messed up, which is a server-level table, where the code points to "lrgallery" (or some such) and the table translates that to the real database name, checks authorization, etc.

He and I are both trying to contact Dan about this problem -- but it's Thanksgiving Day on the north side of Duluth -- so this might take a while.  Thanks for the notification, PP.

Another problem is in the proces of biting the dust.  Bob and Dan, our guy that owns the server farm that hosts this site, have been working for a month or more to defarbulate the Photogallery, and it looks like it's getting back to working - at least some.  I got a note from Bob a little while ago and at least we can see some of the old photos that are there.  I've got a new batch goinng up as a test, and then will FINALLY get the '09 photos from ECTA, SCTA, Bub's, and Top Speed Shootout posted.  They'll be by date of the event.

I hope.  PorkPie, I think we'll give you your own folder - rather than try to remember which of yours came from where.  And that way I'll be able to be sure that all of yours get proper attribution.

Stay tuned, folks.  And thanks. . .

I usually keep quiet and don't post too often.  I am a reader (lurker) and try to read every post on the site.  With the few issues lately and knowing that IT help can sometimes cost money, today I decided that it was time for another DONATION to my favorite web site.  Jon can't do this for free and I don't think the advertising revenue is quite covering all the expenses.  So my challenge to everyone is to pony up a couple of bucks to make sure we have this site for another year.

Now that is off my chest, time to crawl back in my hole and see what else I don't know about bikes since I will have one next year at Maxton.
Title: Re: PROBLEMS
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on December 08, 2009, 07:43:21 PM
Thank you very much for both the donation (which arrived by Paypal today) and the suggestion that others do the same.  You're right -- the bills last month were higher than any in the recent past, and while there was enough in the kitty to pay them -- the advertising sure doesn't raise enough all by itself.

I keep the ads to a minimum on purpose -- trying to have as much room for everyone to offer comments and build diaries and stuff like that without having ads all over the place.  There's my sacrifice -- a chance for greater revenue vs. the guarantee of not too much clutter.  Now it's up to all of you to help me try to keep landracing.com concentrated on our racing, not on what vendors are trying to sell.

The few ads that we do have here are from racers who want to help out with the site as well as promote their products and services.  Please give them every chance when you're in need of parts or advice -- go to their site, call them, write a letter -- let them know that you got turned on to them via this website and the Forum.  If you buy or not isn't the point -- it's that you've at least tried to shop their store, and that shows them that people are seeing their ads.

Okay, once again -- Thanks, Joel.  Everyone else is welcome to send a donation, too.  The easiest way is to use the "Help support landracing.com" button on the lower left of the home page, but you can mail checks to me at the home address -- which is listed on the donations page, too.

Thank you and good night.

A new problem has become apparent, so I'll use this old topic to let you all know I'm aware and working to fix it.

It was brought to my attention the the accessory that uploads photos to posts on the Forum is claiming that it's "Full".  I haven't run into this in the past, and don't therefore know what's the problem.  So -- Bob and I are working on it right now and we hope to have everything back to normal soon.

In the meantime -- if you've got photos that you'd like posted, send them directly to me and I'll get them up on Photobucket and into your posts.

Hello on Monday morning, ladies and gentlemen.  The website and the Forum have been hit hard over the past weekend, causing some outages, for which I can only apologize.  Dan, at the server firm that hosts the site (and a bunch of others) spent both Saturday and Sunday fixing and backing up and so on.  I hope that the site stays up and fine now.

And then - this morning I noticed a few of the Forum posts were from people that have been members for quite a while - but now show up in black font - meaning they're "guests".  Hunh?  And one of that group sent an email asking what had happened.  I don't know - but I can advise you that we'll get everyone back A S A P.  I know that Dan does a complete backup frequently and holds that completely separately - so the worst that might happen is that we'll get set back a few days (or maybe weeks?) and things will be back on track.

In the meantime -- I'm sorry for the hassles.  I like it less than you do, I promise you that.

Here's the latest from Dan, the fella that runs the servers where landracing.com lives.  I messaged him when I discovered the entire site (and Nancy and my personal email) was down.  I'm even more bothered by the outages than are you, I betcha.  We'll get 'em fixed really soon, I hope.

Hi Jon,

You should be back up again as of 11:50AM. I noticed it was down and had to reboot the server. I made some changes last week to eliminate these problems, but now I am concerned that we may still have a hacker's script somewhere sending out spam. It is getting overloaded every morning lately. I'm working on locating the problem. Meanwhile, I will make sure everything you are running is up to date, the latest versions.

Thanks for your patience,

Dan

I thought something was wrong this morning as it was loading slow and sometimes not at all. Hang the hacker.

More, but different, problems:  Try loading the home page.  Dan reports, and I can corroborate his report, that only the left tabs and the top thing are loading.  The calendar isn't, either.  Post if it doesn't work for you - but just one or two posts will be enough to show that it's a widespread outage.  Dan's still chasing the hacker.

It's loading for me but the refresh is very slow. The calendar etc. came up as well.Hope he finds the hacker and disables him.

I loaded the home page and all the tabs appear to work for me, went all the way down the line, to speed clubs, contacts etc. and all worked.

Left side and center top loaded right away. Center text and right side took a long time and then loaded quickly once they started. Same result on MAC and PC.

It works fine for me this morning.  Here's Dan's (the guy that runs the server business where lr.com lives) says:

"I have turned off auto optimization and repair on the SMF install, this can often cause sluggish responses and stalled MySQL. We'll try that for a while and see how it goes.

I manually admin the DB's on my SMF installs."

Got that?

At the risk of another 'threadjack' lashing, I want to repeat the my auto notifications are still not working.

They worked fine for a year, I've changed nothing, but now don't get notifications.

Anyone else still having this problem?

I've sent a note to Bob asking him to look into the problem again.  And I still wonder what's going on -- 'cause I am getting the notices, just like always, and for each new PM, too.

"New Thread Post Notifications" -0- what are those?  I don't think I get them.  When I click on "Show unread posts since last visit" I do get the entire list and the blue button showing "new" -- but those are on the Forum page, not the email inbox.  Whaddaya mean about the "new thread" stuff?

(Heck of a note when the bossman doesn't know what the heck's going on, hey?)

Jon, I guess I phrased that wrong:

When I subscribe to a thread, I used to get a notification of new posts on that thread. I no longer receive those notifications.

Does that statement clarify the issue?

Unh, this is what I see when I dig and click through my "profile" a few pages - getting eventually to "notifications and email.  Are the buttons on yours clicked the same way?  Maybe it's what's different from yours to mine.  I'll fiddle a bit with what I've got clicked and see how it changes things.  Thanks for keeping at it, boys and girls.

I have had problems all day. The site won't open and if it does it won't open forums or anything else. Been weird all day. All other sites open with no problem. Maybe it's connected to the other problems we have had on the site.

Glen, it seems to be working okay for me.  I just got your email - and tried the homepage -- even clicked "refresh" to see if maybe I was getting the cached page.  No, a fresh one appeared, so I went here - to the Forum -- and it's working okay for me, too.  I dunno what's wrong at your end.  Sorry.  Hey, you others out there in internet land -- are you getting the site okay?

30 or 40 years ago, I asked the people that worked for me if they had any problems they needed help on.  My question apparently filtered up to my management because I found out that there is no such thing as a problem - there are only "challenges".  In large Corporations the word "problem" is absolutely forbidden so no one needs to consider this imaginary thing - everything is just hunky dory.  Just thought I'd clarify things a bit.

Well, this is confusing.

The Profile is straightforward, I and others have PM emails enabled.  We don't get emails, Jon does. He sent me a picture of one, so I have to believe him. :|

I have the popup window enabled, so when you first log in, if there's a new PM waiting for you, you get the popup and can read the message right off.  Or, you can go into the 'My Messages' tab and see it there.  This works great for me.  All the PM's I've been sending to my various selves come through.

QUESTION: (Yup, I hollered)  :-D  Is it true that the PM's are working ok (as in the 'My Messages' tab) and the only problem is the email notifications?  That's what it looks like to me.

The fact that board/reply email notifications aren't working either seems to fit.  (Except for Jon....)

QUESTION: Does anybody else *get* such emails besides Jon?
Title: Re: PROBLEMS

Another test email... but notice there's a POLL in another topic, trying to find out who *does* get emails as they should.
Title: Re: PROBLEMS
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on October 18, 2011, 10:15:43 AM
You didn't ask me THAT question, Bob.  I do not get a popup that tells me I've got a PM waiting.  If I go directly to the Forum, without checking my email first, I get nothing other than a little "(1)" next to the button that says "My Messages".  No other indication of an unread PM, though.

No, that's not the only problem- please read post 88 and a few after that.

I don't get PM notifications, nor do I receive notifications of new posts on threads I've sbscribed too. Others have expressed the same issues.

Thanks for your help!
Title: Re: PROBLEMS
Post by: bobc on October 19, 2011, 02:56:59 AM
Tangled up in words.... the problem is the email notifications for *both* PM's and new posts.  The PM's themselves are working ok, meaning that you can see them on the forum, under the "My Messages" tab, but you don't get the email notification.  That's what I meant.

If you know somebody sent you one, but it doesn't show up under the "My Messages" tab, you can report that and REALLY confuse the issue!   :-D

But it looks like an email-sending problem, basically.

The weird thing is that most people don't get any emails, but a few do.

We're working on it....
