How long is the track?
Sounds like you'd have some great air.
Tires are studded?

Tires are studded?
The total lenght of the track is 3000meter/3km. The air is very suitable for this and in the end of march it will not be to cold. We guess somewhere around 32-23 farenheit during the sunny days, maybe a bit warmer also.
The tyres poeple will use is very individual. Most of them will use studded.
I think manycars will use pretty much original studded tires. Like the ones NOKIAN are selling. About the bikes I donĀ“t really know. Pretty long and thin and as light as possible.
These ones on the pics are not realy suitable for extreme speeds. More just extrem grip for ice road racing and stunt riding.

X-15 rocket powered land speed vehicle on ice.
the sonic wind is powered by a single 2200 pounds of thrust lr-11 rocket engine.
the x-15 was powered by the xlr-99 rocket engine.
they briefly used a couple of clusters of the lr-11 engines on the initial x-15 powered flights as an interim while they awaited the might xlr-99.
57,000 pounds of thrust in the x-15 engine, even if it is throttleable, might be a little too much for the sonic wind.

Greg --
You've got me confused on this Montie Wolff thing . . .
". . . I know Monte Wolfe, senator, and you're no Monte Wolfe."
???

". . . I know Monte Wolfe, senator, and you're no Monte Wolfe."
ah, but i am monty wolf!
i think i met monte in 1969.
i always thought monte wolfe was the coolest name i'd ever heard.
i told monte when i got into radio i was going to steal his name.
i've been monty wolf for most of my life.
outside of the lsr community and my family everyone knows me as monty. even the current and previous governor of nevada and our two senators know me as monty. but, harry doesn't like me all that much, but john ensign likes me just fine. i wish the attached picture was clearer; not many people have pictures of themselves "hamming-it-up" with a united states senator!
it is kind of strange having two names.
i still think monte wolfe/monty wolf is the coolest name ever!
-
And Monte Wolfe is a cool guy, too!
Thanx for the explanation --I've worked with radio guys for the last 25 years (and some of them have almost forgotten who they used to be!).

that certainly added to the attraction of adopting the name.

one of the reasons i hate the business!
pic below is monty wolf, burke lesage and monte wolfe with the redhead in impound in 1978. it meant a lot to me to have monte welcome me into the club.

O.K................

suitable ice vehicle for jim demmitt's attempt at the lsr on ice.

Whoa, what an old Zamboni (the ice resurfacer). That is the original version -- with the chain to move the ice chips from the auger to the bin on top. These days they use a screw-feed system. And as for the ice dragster -- any idea what it uses for a drive system? I couldn't see a wheel or track -- and with the power that a big blown motor could make -- well, maybe it was a show-only dragster.
-
You can see the original jeep body that the were made out of.
-
Has anyone tried to run a snowmobile on the salt? They do dragrace them at normal dragstrips, and some are pretty fast, in the 9-8 second range on asphalt.

Isn't that a big belt on the back? Behind Betty's boot?
-
It looks like a set of rollers. They could support a belt - especially since that's the way most snowmobile tracks are designed. But I couldn't see the belt per se. Maybe the thing has, I wondered, a studded tire in the center - as a driven device. I guess it doesn't matter -- the photo was only to tease someone, right?
-
Take your eyes of the mini skirt SS Slim and the chromed dragster always does (did) appear to be a teaser rather than a runner. But perhaps those that know will recognise if the tracks on each side- which looked to be off two snow mobiles would work.
I saw the piece in Hot Rod Magazine - so it was Americans teasing Americans on this one. Motor looked to be capable of good horsepower - too much perhaps for the running gear.
Malcolm UK
-
Malcolm- just when I was trying to be a nice guy -- you go and accuse me of letting my eyes stray from looking at Nancy. Ah, what's a guy to do?
I posited a few posts back that maybe this was a show-only vehicle, remember. I don't see tracks - or even a track. The blind side is just that -- can't see anything on the left of the vehicle.
I have seen snowmobiles go fast -- we've got a local "radar run" event on Teal Lake, near Negaunee, Michigan - the next town up the road from Marquette -- and the speeds there, in a relatively short run (under a quarter mile, I think) get well above 125 mph.
-
At first I thought this was one of the flash-backs Jimmy Buffett warned us about. J.B.

at the risk of coming-off like "pink flamingo" jim demmitt: check out this link:
