We can't let Charles have all the fun building this winter, so I decided to build a new shop too!
I am currently working out of a 20 X 23 shop built onto the house, but I'm already outgrowing it with my motorcycle projects. Here is a pic of the clean fresh shop when we moved in in May of '08.
I already have it full with my current bike build.
Joe Daly and I are planning a small belly tank build in the future, so I have decided to put up a 30 X 40 pole barn to use as a new shop and storage shed. I will make the door big enough to park my race trailer inside. We started building the pole barn last week...

The bike on the left looks a lot like a Triumph. I'd love to see it down here.

It's a 2006 Triumph Scrambler and it's for sale. Pics can be seen here: http://www.frsengineering.com/Triumph.htm

Did that idiot say left? Must have been on line at work---not working.
-
We got some more work done on the new shop today. A crane will be on site Monday morning to hoist the remaining roof trusses

Impressive ... where's the snow? Joe
-
Joe, if you think he needs snow -- maybe I should send him some of ours. Here's a photo of our new garage:
-
Slim,
You may have to shovel off the roof ... it may not bear the load and collapse .
Joe
-
Snow?? Is that the white stuff in Jon's pic? :-D
Didn't I tell you Joe, I live in the Bannana belt of Southern Illinois 8-)
-
Must be nice to be able to work outside in the end of January. About 24" of snow on the ground here in W. Mass with wind chill predicted to be -15 F tomorrow. This probably would seem like spring conditions to Slim.
-
Slim It looks like you would get more time to use a snow machine than your motorcycles. :-)
-
Jon, that sure looks pretty there. Do you have snowmobiles?
It looks like you could use one of these up there...

In regards to shoveling the snow off the roof -- yes, it's not uncommon at all. Read our newspaper's want ads and you'll see more than a few folks advertising that they'll shovel roofs. But -- we do know that snow load is a hazard up here, and at least one company -- a few miles up U S 41 from us -- uses that as part of their raison d'ete. Here's a link to Skandia Truss company. Look at the site and you'll see what I mean: http://www.skandiatruss.com/
As for the ski/cycle -- Ben, a mechanic that does our heavy duty truck work, rides a Ski-Doo whatever-it's-called cycle like that. He says it is way more fun and exciting than riding a regular snowmobile. I don't ride either kind of snow machine -- just the various snow removal tools that I keep at my disposal. Here's one:
http://www.nancyandjon.org/images/nancy_plow.jpg
And you've all seen my Oshkosh, and I've also got the Bobcat skidsteer with a Boss power V-plow (which skidsteer I used for an hour or two at the office yesterday. It's a blast -- heated enclosed cab, turbo diesel engine, spins in its own length so is wonderfully maneuverable). Snow isn't all that bad -- it just takes the correct attitude to live with it.
-
Glad to see another shop going up... It was as fun sharring my shop build as it was the car build...
Good luck and keep us posted.
Charles
-
Made a lot of progress today. We set the trusses and installed most of the rafters and supports. I had about 12 ton of rock/dust mix delivered and spread it with the old 8N...

Building has stopped for a few days here. Although it looks like snow, it's not. Ice has been falling all night. If you pick up a handful, it looks like little tiny ball bearings. I don't even leave footprints in it when I walk on it!

Randy,
Is this your first winter away from So Cal?
Joe
This is my second winter here Joe. I worked outside all last winter building the new house and it wasn't too bad at all.
-
Nice bike pad you got going Randy... nice choices and setup going on there
Todd
-
Thanks Todd, I appreciate the comments. We started building the house in Oct 07 and moved in May 08. Between my LSR racing/building and maintaining/improving the property, I'm glad I'm retired since those have been full time jobs.
I have been posting the shop build since there doesnt seem to be much going on in the ECTA section. I was intrigued by the steakhouse story but the real facts were a slight let down from the myth...ya know, no arrests, no chases or fights...LOL (jk :-D)
Why don't you post that vid of your new dyno in action?
-
Hope you're back at it Randy, can't wait to see your new shop all finished up so we can see more of the twin (and the lakester start to take shape).
Btw... congrats to you, but the only retiring I think I'm going to be doing is on those bikes that have a bald one.
Good chat the other day,
Todd
PS: I made a post here since you asked about the video... http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php/topic,5482.0.html

Thanks Todd, I think we will be back at it tomorrow :-P. Thanks for all the info in our chat, I hope you don't mind me picking your brain some more on my v-twin build
-
The weather hasn't been cooperating lately, so our shop building project has been delayed. We had a few good days without wind, so we got some things done. Hauling the long pieces of steel onto the roof requires very calm winds along with the matching length insulation that goes on first. We got some more carpentry work done and about 3/4 of the roof installed before we had to pull off today when the wind picked up...

We will probably be back at it in a couple of days.
-
That's startin to look real nice. I am so jealous of you. I can only think that great things will come out of this new shop.
-
Thanks, one of the carpenters helping me just got back from Chicago yesterday. He said there's still snow on the ground up there, brrrr  You're welcome to stop by here anytime you head South
-
Randy -- if you're going "brrrr" at a whole inch of snow on the ground -- what'd you do if your forecast included the following -- especially if you lived, as we do, in the higher terrain around Skandia (Michigan)? here's what I just copied and pasted from the Weather Service forecast for tonight and tomorrow for us:
TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 10 TO 18 INCHES ARE
POSSIBLE FROM THIS STORM...GREATEST OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN FROM
NEGAUNEE TO SKANDIA...
Now, see? An inch of snow isn't that bad, is it? Then here's the Wednesday/Wednesday night forecast:
Wednesday: Snow and widespread blowing snow. Temperature falling to around 18 by 5pm. Wind chill values between zero and 10. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 7 to 10 mph increasing to between 25 and 28 mph. Winds could gust as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches possible.
Wednesday Night: Snow showers and widespread blowing snow. Low around 6. Wind chill values between -5 and -15. Windy, with a north northwest wind around 30 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 9 inches possible.
There. Feel better now?
-
I feel like I live in the "Bannana Belt" after looking at your forecast Jon LOL. Seriously, I'm originally from Tucson with past residences in Florida and Northern and Southern Cal. This four seasons stuff is new to me 8-)
-
Jon,
Portlands Thursday forcast, high 57, low 37, 10% precipitation.
Not great, but warmer than Skandia. :-D
See you there.
Don
-
Jon that just sucks :-D
terry
And give Nancy a hug
-
Nah, Terry, the weather isn't that big of a deal. And -- no mosquitoes for months at a time, and no need for air conditioning during the summer. I enjoy the snow removal, too -- sitting on the big snow thrower gives a sense of accomplishment. . .
Whatever, hey?
-
Well, down here in the bannana belt  we have had clear weather with no wind, so we have been able to get more siding installed today...

We should be done with the building shell in a couple of days.
-
Randy,
Looks great, will you be able to park the trailer inside..?
John
-
John, to bad your yard is so small.
-
Glen,
You are so right...
-
Randy,
Looks great, will you be able to park the trailer inside..?
John
Thanks John. Yes, room for the trailer inside was a first thought when building the new shop. We lined it up with the driveway and made the door 10ft tall to accomodate the trailer...
It will be nice to get it out of the weather and away from the front of the small shop...

very nice
terry

Thanks Terry.

Very Nice
I need one a my house

Very Nice
I need one a my house
Thanks, I don't think I will ever say I have too much storage/work space :-D.
The outside shell is complete. The new gutters will be installed next week and I have about 60 ton of rock/dust mix scheduled for delivery that will be spread inside to level the floor. I will probably spend the next 6-10 months finishing off the inside, but at least I have a place to start the lakester build as we find parts...

Hmmm, how much space do you need and how much rent could you pay...hmmmm

whats a gutter and why do you need them?
kent
-
whats a gutter and why do you need them?
kent
For furthering your education ,Kent , a "gutter" at least in Australia is a metal or plastic U shaped channel that is placed around the roof line to collect water run off and channel it to a down pipe , It can also be the prefered residence of drunks and bums after a night on the turps .
from your best mate :-P
-
you will have to excuse Kent ... "It never rains in California" ... Joe
-
whats a gutter and why do you need them?
kent
It's where I keep my mind these days Kent, I'd be lost with out them  Now that I have the space built...I need a belly tank...hint...hint :-D
-
The floor of the new shop is just dirt now and not level...
http://www.frsengineering.com/pb35.jpg
I have 60 ton of crushed rock/dust mix to build up and level the floor with the old Ford tractor...
http://www.frsengineering.com/pb34.jpg
The floor will stay this way until the taxman has appraised the property. After that I will add concrete floors as needed.
-
Wow,,, nice job on the build,,, Keep us posted as you move in.
Charles
-
Thanks Charles, I will. I hope to be able to install on of these this summer...
-
The gutters have been installed and about 60 ton of base material has been spread inside and out of the new barn. I will top off the outside material with 3/4 inch clean rock next week. I still have to trench the electrical line to the shop from the end of the main electrical conduit run that's at the white bucket in the first pic...
Next will be lights, switches and outlets.
-
No insulation, Charles?
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
It's a work in progress Neil. Eventually the walls and ceiling will be insulated. I will install the ceiling first since I have a 30 inch exhaust fan I want to add. That's why the gable vents were installed. I plan on painting the new bike and lakester in there.
Randy
-
Randy, now that it's sorta too late -- here's something I think you should have installed. I've got three or four pole buildings -- and each has translucent fiberglass panels installed high up the side walls to let in diffused light. It's enough that you can see where you're going during the day, although you'll still want to turn on the lights to do any work, and also the diffusers mean that you won't have direct sunlight making things inside fade.
Bonus: When you are leaving for the night and all frustrated and forget to turn off the lights -- you'll see that they're still on when you look at the building.
Not too late -- you could cut slots in the side walls and put in some of the plastic. In my buildings it's 20-30 feet long (different sizes for different length buildings).
Best wishes -- and isn't it great to have the new place? I'm still outfitting my new garage - and having a ball.
-
Charles;
I suspected that you just hadn't added the insulation yet. It sure makes a shop more "liveable" to have good insulation in the walls and roof.
Paint the concrete floor a bright color-- it makes the interior brighter and you can find small parts when they fall on the floor. :-D
Regards, Neil Tucson, AZ
-
Jon, the roof is insulated between the rafters and the top metal. I'm also gonna put in a ceiling with a large 30 inch fan that draws air from the inside of the building and blows it through the "attic" area and out the gable vents. It keeps the building much cooler in the summer and quickly evacuates engine exhaust, welding smoke and paint spray/fumes. The roof lights wouldn't help me much with a ceiling. That's why I put in six large windows.
I am looking forward to outfitting the shop after all the work is done. I still have much to do before that with the ceiling and inside walls to be done.
-
Here's what I did. You can see (barely) the light-colored panels at the top of the side wall. No worry about the ceiling. Best wishes with the new building however it gets built -- it's just what YOU wanted.
-
Looks nice Jon, thanks. What's all that white stuff?
-
Oh, Randy, that's what falls out of the sky up here -- during October. I spent about a half-hour yesterday with the Bobcat (skidsteer) plowing in front of the building (well, actually, the other building -- I've got two side-by-each) so I can get the doors open soon. A customer wants his RV out by the 21st -- so I started moving the drifted/fallen snow pile -- about five feet deep. BF SNOW!
-
Randy / Jon /// 66 degrees on Long Island today ... faux spring ?
-
8-)76 and overcast here in Mammoth, Az.
-
Mammoth AZ, that sure does bring back memories :-D I used to do a lot of riding, hunting and cave exploring around there. I grew up in Tucson  Wasn't there a cave on the backside of the Catalina mtns...can't remember the name...peppersauce or something like that??
Joe faux spring here too...77 degrees
The snow looks nice Jon, glad we don't have as much here.
-
Snowed in Portland again today (extremely rare for March) and maybe a little more by tomorrow morning. Third highest seasonal snowfall on record. It's been much colder than average and I believe we're about 8" of rainfall short of average for the rain year (starts 1 Oct).

If I can get Kent to make me a belly tank, I will be coming out in the spring to pick it up. Timing that with an Elmo meet would be great, I'll keep it on the back burner
