Title: East coast weather
Post by: Glen on November 15, 2008, 07:41:26 PM
We are all hoping the big storm missed all of our LSR friends are safe and in no danger as well as all the general population. These are rough times with all going on around the world. California has 4 major fires right now. 100s of homes lost.

Big storm?  I haven't heard -- but I don't watch the television so I guess I miss a ot of that stuff.  We got an inch or two of snow last night - and there's another 4 or so in the forecast for today and tonight.  I guess it's time to finish putting the snowthrower attachment on the yard tractor.  I put the snow tires on the car and truck yesterday.  Another day in the Upper Peninsula.

Hi Jon,
I put the snow tires on the car yesterday. We are getting a lot of rain and wind but it's in the 50's right now. I don't watch the news much. Is this part of a big storm?
Just another day on the coast of Maine.

Okay, Marcia -- the Forum's kinda slow this morning so I'll tell the story.

Nancy was on the way to work yesterday - on our first really slushy roads of the season.  Her Subaru has good tires on it -- but they're the factory all-season units.  But -- unknown to us, she had evidently picked up a sheet metal screw in the LR and it was low on air.  The low tire combined with the slush put her in the ditch a few miles form the house.  No big deal, and I was there within a little while to get to to work on time.  But since the car had to be towed (too far for me to reach from safe road with the 30' tow strap) - I had the gas station put the "real" snow tires on it.  Better still, by the way, was that a State Trooper happened to be there while the wrecker was removing the car, and he and the truck driver noticed some scratches on the rocker panels and such -- so there's a police report waiting so I can have the dings and dents fixed up by the insurance.  Thanks, Auto- Owners.

Anyway - when we got home last night I enjoyed having my new garage complete with compressor and all the rest -- and since I keep the snow tires on separate rims -- it took only a few minutes to swap all four on the truck, and now I'm as ready as I can be for the oncoming snow.  We've had only 8" or so this season -- way behind the "normal" 14 or so to this date.  Soon, Marcia, soon.

It was 63 here in Western Mass. last night at 11PM. Had snow flurries this Am. So much for New England
weather. Slim feel free to trap all the snow you can on it's way east.

In Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles, it was 75 today . . . at 5:30 this morning.

Of course it was 39 by the time I drove a hundred miles to El Mirage.

90 degrees at 3:00 p.m.

Had a twister hit a junk yard 2 miles from us some building damage.
Farther north some people were killed count so far is 6.
70+ degree temps Nov-Feb is not good in this part of the state.

Wow, Glen was right.  Nasty weather, for sure.  As for the 70s -- do you mean that it's too warm and that brings the storms?  I'm sure glad we're up here.  Tornadoes are pretty much unheard of, and snow is easy -- shovel it or wait 'til spring for it to thaw.

Regards to Cyndia, of course.  I'll have Nancy send a note to her one of these days.  Do we have her email addy?

Jon,
Nothing more exhilerating than skidding out through the willy-wags on a sheet of fresh ice. I haven't done that since I parked the old Suburban. It was sure graceful on ice.
Nancy is OK?

I don't need snow yet. I don't have all my firewood undercover yet.

Two folks were killed by tornados within about 20 miles (1 about 8 mi.) last Saturday night but we were lucky- not even much wind damage. We are having scattered snow flurries today, nothing sticking.

As I was running around town helping Santa, the radio guys said that there were flurries here and there - I didn't see any.  I didn't move here to get snowed on!  Having a nasty cold spell, but it'll be over in a few days.

I have a bro in San Anto - beautiful place.  It was one of the places we considered retiring, but a lack of beach and extreme heat for prolonged periods made us decide against it.  Wilmington is really pretty and we don't regret the choice.  Except maybe today.

You bunch of wimps!  We got 12-16 inches of snow in the past three days.  No big deal -- kinda looks pretty on the trees and on the rooftop and on the mailbox and on the sidewalk and on - and on - and on...

So, I was wondering....how fast could your snowblower work with a drop or two of nitro?  :-o

Your praise of snow are falling on deaf ears in south Texas. As far as I am concerned snow has no redeeming qualities, especially since my knees wont let me ski anymore. Of course my two Siberian Huskys would seriously debate the point, we do try and take them to play in the snow once in awhile. If I want snow I will go to it, I don't want it to come to me. :-D  FRED

Well, Lynda, I have been known to spike the gasoline with a tad of the leftover race gas during the winter.  Doesn't change performance (if it does I don't notice it) but the smell is great -- keeps me smiling as I'm out there having my "fun".

snow is not an issue. Its ice and dumb truckstops(beat you to it) that think 4 wheel drives can stop on a dime.

You know, I've gotta laugh.  I changed the swear-word censor a while back -- and I don't think anyone has tried it yet.  That's fine with me -- I'm happy with less "adult" language on the site.  Not trying to be a prude -- trying to keep it so that nobody gets all bent out of shape because their kid might see a naughty word (even if Mom and Dad use those same words all the time).

As for stopping on a dime with a 4X4 -- there is some improvement in stopping power with the four-wheel-drive engaged, and as long as I don't rely on it without changing anything else in my driving styles -- I'm fine.

Jon,
Last year in I was out of gas for the snow blower and I filled it with 110 Sunoco out of the bike. Not a good idea. It did run strong for a little while before the old Briggs and Stratton quit.

Jon

I don't think we've had 16" total of snow this millenium. I'd trade a little summer humidity for some weekend snow.

Go to www.noaa.gov and put in our Zip code -- 49885.  You'll see we've got another 18" or so in the forecast starting late tonight and through mid-day Friday.  Yee-hah, I get to play in the snow - some more.

To each his own. . .

Oh, yeah -- Terry, we've got very few 4-lane roads in the Upper Peninsula -- probably only a hundred miles total (plus 50 miles of interstate highway).  So we don't often have the opportunity to slide across four lanes of pavement!

The single most important thing in snow and ice driving are the tires and wheels. With my Z-28 Camaro, with nice skinny studded tires and 300# of lead in the trunk worked really well on winter roads. Made for some very fun and spirited driving. However skill and common sense are still prerequisites.

No snow yet, but it's cold enough. I'm still hauling wood.
I know it doesn't hold much but it's fun to to drive around the wood roads.
Rod and Custom Has 2 articles on Bonneville.

Marcia, it needs a race team sticker on the doors.  Otherwise -- there's nothing like a woods truck!

Jon,
It does have a SCTA sticker and a 60th Bonneville sticker on it.
Nice tracker! No wonder you are having fun clearing the snow. My husband does all the plowing 'cause he's the only one who can start the plow truck.

This is about a 1/4 mile from my house in 1949. Looong before I lived there.
Forecast is for 81 on Friday. Suits me just fine.

"...San Antonio, the last time it snowed here was 1985."

"The last time it snowed in Simi Valley was 1949."

The last time it rained in Arica was 1592. Oh, wait... that is on the west coast (of South America). :)
