Title: Maxton October 08 Pictures/Stories
Post by: Warp12 on October 30, 2008, 02:09:40 PM
Racheal managed to snap quite a few good pictures at last weekend's event. I just got some new ftp space, so I am finally able to start collecting and uploading them. Feel free to grab a picture and tell an associated story about the machines and/or people associated with them...or post your own! :)

Well, I'll start with a story about my attempt to hit 190 mph on my ZX-14. I've been working on this bike quite a bit since I got it back in May, and it is primarily used for drag racing. I've been racing for fun, along with my girlfriend Racheal, for about 2 years at Maxton...

So, the story goes...

Well, it rained almost all day here at Maxton! They stop the runs at 6 pm, and I made one run at near 5:30. Not many people got a run in today; I was one of the lucky ones!

The run went pretty well, if a little tentative. I have to get used to a new tuck with the step seat, and this is my first time using the shifter at the mile. As I said, I am trying for 190 mph this weekend. Here is what I've started off with:

Not bad! My gearing calculation is pretty darn close; I have roughly 200 rpm left in the bike before I hit the rpm limiter in 6th. I'm hoping that a good nights rest and cool morning air will get me to 190 mph tomorrow.

And the following day:

We got to the track at 6:10 am this morning. I rode the bikes up to the starting line in the dark to get a good spot in line. The weather conditions were very much improved in the morning. Unfortunately, my first run was another 189 mph pass. I suspected that the bike might be running a little lean in the cool air, but I didn't have my data logger hooked up to check it.

I decided that I needed to try something different. I installed the stock, shorter windscreen. I thought that it might help since I had been told by a couple of sources that the double bubble was not as aero as the stocker. Well, by this time a small headwind was developing. My next run netted a disappointing 185 mph.

So, I switched back to the double bubble and gave it another try. Another 189 mph pass. I was starting to think it just wouldn't go any faster! I went ahead an installed the LM-1 logger so I could at least see if I was running lean like I thought.

Finally, things went right:

My gearing was just about perfect. I hit the limiter right at/after the end of the traps. The logger also confirmed what I suspected. The bike was running about 13.7:1 a/f at the top of 6th gear. No wonder it wasn't pulling hard in the last couple hundred rpm!

I'd say that there are a couple more mph left in the bike with a good tune. I'm still very happy to run near 191 mph at 225 lbs. suited. I'm definitely not jockey-sized:

Here you can see that the concrete of Maxton can be a little abrasive on the tires:

My 190 mph mission accomplished! One final pic from trackside:

I also had a bit of a close call out there. Running very close to a cone through the lights, which put me in a very bad spot in shutdown. Completely due to rider error. The photographer caught it. When I get the picture I will explain more about what happened.

Here's one for you:  A picture caption writing contest.  I'll send a landracing.com t-shirt to the winner.  I don't know how I'll select the winner - maybe let you folks help me.  Whatever, let's get started.

What should the caption be for this wonderful photograph?

I look forward to seeing some creative comments...

Great pics and congrats to you and Racheal both on a successful year Shane. 190+ on a lightly modded stocker and multiple 200+ runs....

Warner Riley being there at Maxton is as it was the first time he came.... a tremendous highlite I only wish I could express fully and him being there of course didn't even have anything to do with me - I was in extreme envy of Jim Fischer having Warner there as his crew cheif - I mean WOW! It was an honor to share the limited time Deb and I could with Warner and Jim... true gentlemen both.

Thanks for the bi-line on that pic there Stainless, don't know what I'd do without you buddy.

Jon and Nancy... what can I say - THANKS for all you both do in so many ways! Oh yeah... and hot foot you got there gorgeous
Todd

Thanks for the kind words Todd -  I don't know if you knew about it, but we almost lost Warner little over2 yrs ago as a result of a serious dirt riding accident. I have no doubt that being the tenacious competator that he is, his will to keep going pulled him through. This last year our friendship has been like a dream to me. I tell people, God help the poor guy that wakes me up from this one. Yes I am a very lucky guy sometimes, and this is one of them. Just prior to his accident Warner did set several records at Maxton, I believe one still stands in the APS/PBF 2000, "the Bonvillian"from Carls Speed shop. Some of the stories he has conveyed to me are absolutely precious. In particular the ones surrounding the Carl Rayburn/Denis Manning/Warner Riley/John Yeats #1 Harley Davidson Streamliner of '70-71?  record breaker. I met Jon Yeats at Bonneville this last Sept. He was noted as being the "unsung hero" of that streamliner. Story on that later, but he wasn't in most of the pictures then because he was the one behind the camera taking the pics. So anyhow, it brings joy to my heart to see that Warner is back and having fun. If I have anything to do with it, we'll see you again next season. Now its time to think about this winters new project for next year. For some unknown reason I feel a need to go just a bit faster.
A big thanks to all the ECTA volunteers and competators - you all are top notch people.

Charles, you had a fine chance to buy your very own landracing.com shirt at Maxton a week and a half ago -- and were so busy racing that you didn't stop by our pit to select one for yourself.  And now you want to have me give you one!  Well, maybe -- but I think I'l wait another day or two before making the decision.  By the way, just what size t-shirt do you wear?  We've got them in an assortment:  S, M, L, XL, 2XL, and one big size labeled "Made by the Oshkosh Tent and Awning Company"  Also -- they're available in white cloth/clack lettering -- or black, with white letters.

Order them now, folks, just in case you don't win.  And thanks for the suggested captions.  Maybe I'll keep 'em all and send them to Keith for Christmas.

Jon, I had planned to stop by and get a few bumper stickers because I figured you did not have 3X or 4X shirts.
(I like 4X so they don't restrict my personality.. lol    my trailer has a few spots for some of those cool stickers)

But yes, I was a little busy getting ready (tough to run the car on Sunday with no help) but I made it,,, thanks to all the folks at the starting line who piched in and helped me keep my car in line when I got tired of pushing...

Title: Re: Maxton October 08 Pictures/Stories
Post by: Warp12 on November 05, 2008, 03:05:48 PM
As I said earlier in the thread, I did have a close call out there. I have the pictures* now to illustrate. First, a picture from a "good" run:

While my tuck is not the greatest, it is typical of the runs that I was making. We can start a tuck critique thread elsewhere. :D

Since I was struggling to get over 189 mph, I decided to change my windscreen to a lower one. At about this time a headwind came up. The next pass was a bad pass. The bike didn't feel the same because I changed my visual focus and body position slightly in order to compensate for the lower screen. It also meant that my view of the track was altered. With the change in the bike and the wind, I found myself focusing on the wrong things. That put me in a very bad position on the track. In the picture below, the bike is moving at 185 mph through the traps...and dangerously close to some stationary objects:

When I went past the cone, I knew I was in a bad spot. When I rolled off and raised up to take a look, I was on the lefthand side of the cones in the shutdown area. Even though the cones are spaced far apart, they were moving past very fast. So much so that by the time I thought about going back through to the safe area, the gap would close and another cone streak by. My mind was moving pretty quickly at this point and I made myself focus on the right side of the cones. I knew that I needed to get back over there as soon as the chance came. I resisted the temptation to get hard on the brakes, since the area I was travelling in is not maintained.

The other thought that crossed my mind was that if I needed to run over a cone, I would do so without hitting the brakes. I had thought about this in past (after Debbie's accident). I came to the conclusion back then that the bike could likely take some impact from a cone without crashing...but to lock the front wheel up would cause an instant crash. Even though it seems like that is more than I could think about in such a short time, trust me, those thoughts went through in a split second.

As luck would have it, by focusing on where I wanted to be, my mind, body, and the bike followed. I came through a gap in the cones and took long shutdown. It all happened so fast that I really didn't get scared. I went back to the pits and decided to take an hour off before running again. I didn't take the time off in order to calm down...I took the time so that I could think hard about what had happened and what I needed to do in order to avoid a repeat.

I am not an extremely experienced racer. In fact, I only use the term "racer" for lack of a better one. It is just my hobby and I only have about 30-40 runs down the concrete. But those runs allowed me to get comfortable enough to lose focus on something very important, which could have led to very bad results. I'm going to take the time to evaluate my mental/racing checklist and safety routine this winter. I encourage all of you to do the same.

Shane

Shane,

Thanks  for the pics and the explanation.  It takes a real racer to admit they may have made a mistake and to provide the commentary as you have. I am glad your self described bad run ended on a good note and all is well. In any sport having a pre game, pre shot, pre race or a pre run routine and a physical and mental checklist is a good thing.

I myself made a mistake on my last run on Sunday. Those who heard my run thought I hit the rev limiter hard on my 2nd. to 3rd. shift, was in fact me concentrating on the head wind and hitting the bump at the exact time I was shifting to 3rd but going all the way to Neutral, back to second then back to third. All this happend in a split second and messed up what could have been my fastest pass ever (even with the head wind at full sock).. Oh well I did get the record and was less than .5 mph off my fastest pass ever,,, but man it could have been so much better,,,, Oh the embarrassing part,,, I use an Automatic transmission   .... I guess we all tell on ourself sometimes,, and we can all learn from sharing....

Take care and have a great off season... see you next year....

Hey, this is getting interesting.  I remember when Jon Amo had the regular trivia quiz on the site - and it generated some good interest (in that lots of hits on the site got done).  Maybe I'll come up with a more regular contest of some sort.  Hey, maybe one of you will come up with a good suggestion -- but remember that I need not only the quiz questions, I need the answers, too.  Maybe I could get Pork Pie to offer up some old-timey bits.

Anyway, I think I'll decide who should win the t-shirt (from this photo captioning to-do) by this coming Monday.  Get your suggestions in by then, hokay?

Waiting for the track to dry Saturday afternoon, standing around getting a lesson in how to blow up a 4 cylinder ford with NOS.
It was a fun conversation with lots of laughs. I was crewing on truck 9602 and we where running NOS for the first time. The owner of the falcon (I know it is not a falcon but I cannot think of what its name is right now) had us worried that it we where going to blow up on the first pass.
