How did they do that?

MKM Racing Promotions is Mike Keith and Marsha in partnership.  MKM were instrumental in enabling the Primetime LSR team to run on Highway 93A south of Wendover.

Mile Borders is ex USAF and was posted to England during his period in the forces, so we got on very well during '04 to '06.

Mike manages a tight road racing organisation business out of Vegas so it will be a combination of professionalism, knowing folk and selling a deal that sets up the mile shoot out.  Just don't sit at the poker table with either Mike or Marsha.

His organisation website is www.openroadracing.com

It was Ed Van Scoy (of Vette fame) who put is in contact four years ago.

My guess is that some general saw the video of Jason Mcvickr's crash that some idiot posted on u-tube and decided he didn’t want a similar horrible thing to happen on his watch.... We already know that the military doesn’t care for bikes, that’s why they make ‘em do all kinds of special training and make ‘em where special orange colored safety vests…. Now throw in a video of a high speed bike crash.!… yep makes ya wonder why huh.?… Oh! hey, do ya think the underwriter and higher ups for the SCTA’s insurance company have seen the video yet? Yep, really makes ya wonder if whoever posted that video really thought what kind or repercussions might come of it….

Hey guys some of you get a bike only meeting on the salt once a year - dont have a dig if 'you are too fast to race'.

As to who knows whom - why not ask Mike Borders himself?

I got access to RAF/USAF Fairford airfield after 27 years with full insurance etc for a single team and few spectators, The guards there had automatic weapons cocked and loaded!  But I found the right people over here to talk to Whitehall and to the Pentagon and Washington

Mike must be just a little bit better than me after we collaborated on his fiorst exposure to LSR in 2004/2005.

If you plan on attending - you better get your paperwork in in a hurry.  You will be put through a  security check!  No last minute deciding you want to attend -  run or even watch!

Mike runs a good open road race event -  a bit pricey -  but descent -  just too straight and boring for my tastes!

The Military already has way too may Bikers maimed and killed on bikes because of testosterone and beer---do not want to plant any more ideas of going that fast on a military instalation---just my guess!!!!!!!!!!!

I would suspect that MKM's Insurance carrier put the kaibosh on the motorcycles.  I'm sure they would have let them do it -  but would have hung a hefty priced rider onto the policy!

don't know for sure -  but working around the fringes of organizing these things -  that seems to be the most likely explanation!  On the otherhand - the Military might be looking at the problems associated with a what if moment -  Bike rider killed on runway at nellis -  would not play out very well -  not only in the press -  but also in Washington -  so maybe it's a combination of both  I don't know.

The most likely explanation though - is that there are No LSRE motorcycle riders who have clean enough records to be granted access to the base!   I bet thats it -  a bunch of fringe hooligans looking for another place to sniff nitro- methane !  Yah -  thats the ticket!

Hey john,
This event catered to a different crowd -  the Las Vegas -  drag racers   and the open road race group.  I don't know if any LSR people were there!  If they were -  I suspect we will eventually hear about it!

Doesn't look like much of an event.  They enter the cars under an index speed.  Unlimited being over 200mph, with different brackets below.  It doesn't look like there are any type of records that can be set?  Here's a link to the speeds.

From the chat on the open road racing forum the number of entrants was just the 23 cars,  The motorcycles were turned away by the Military according to MKM; it was not their choice at short notice.

The classification of cars accords with their open road racing methods, which their people are comfortable with.  The 'Tech Speed' is either a governing body elected speed for a class (because of vehicle safety features etc) or could be an elected speed if otherwise unlimited.  Go over your tech speed through a speed trap on the open road and your run does not remain on the timesheets.  The open road is won by the person getting closest to the target average speed - some get it to the second decimal place of mile per hour.

There is a 200 mph club in open road racing events as they have speed traps on the straights.

If there is LSR suupport in the Vegas area I am sure MKM would be open to catering for 'our' form of racing too, if he gets an event back to this base.  Its just that he has a strong loyal following of entrants from the world they cater for in mid and north Nevada events.  He is approachable and the address for the office (staffed by Linda) is on the website.

Malcolm - who spent about 11 hours as an open road course worker one sunday south of Wendover - UK.

I am not usre that you wanted a 'how to guide'......

How good the mapping is in the western USA or indeed does Google Maps or similar have satellite images?  For us in the UK there are no 'secret' runways.  Find those that are in a radius of the miles to Bonneville or less from your location.  I drove past a number in the Tonapah region in '98

Some of these bases are sure to have facilities that are dormant for part of the year and are being held on 'care and maintenance'.  USAF/RAF Fairford is an example - the stealth bombers only come over during time of heoightened world tension.

If you know which of the bases has runways that are either at or over 2 mile, then the task becomes one of cultivating the base commander.  Get him/her interested and then you can move on to the matter of dealing with those who have to agree to the day or weekend hire.  If anything like the UK this is when you run into the regional or national estates people for whom it could just be 'too much to bother with'.  But keep in the back of your mind that the people and the facilities have been paid for by your tax monies.  All of them work for you.

If you are fortunate there will be a community at the base that interacts with the local non forces community - towns, councils and such like.  Once at a 'local' level there will be a mix of elected officials (someone has voted for them) and permanent offices (paid persons).  In the case of the elected officials they will have to 'earn' their votes in the next popular pole and so they could be keen to demonstrate support for an activity that promotes the town and surrounding area.  Racers have to eat, sleep, and dare I suggest afterwards, drink.  Any LSR event brings in money to a town (exscept perhaps the Bonneville experience where gamblers and golfers with more money may be levered aside).  Get some representatives on your side and meetings start to happen.  People that matter start to get a warm feeling about the proposed event.

It might be easier for us in the UK to organise a single car/team activity - not so many folk to worry those in charge - but LSR has a sound family background which can be demonstrated from reports on this site.  Selling the sport as being non disruptive is the way forward - make it easy for the base by providing staff as well as insurance, that ease their involvement.  Example - If the task is to check all vehicles, have your racers turn up in batches ready for their hoods (bonnets) to be opened and trunks (boots) and enclosed trailers to be searched.  Do not send everyone along at the same time but do not spread out the duration either.  Start samll in numbers and build gradually.

Once you get the feeling you will be allowed on the base select places and again assure thos in command that folk will not wander from set positions - agree these with the base and marshal them yourself.

Of course getting onto the facility is just the start - once you have held an event make sure that you will be allowed back the next time of asking.  Much like working with the BLM, make sure that you leave the site cleaner than when you arrived - get rid of any object that could become/cause FOD.

Final thought at the moment - whilst racers know what they want to do for organising an event some of them will probably have to give up a race weekend to be the organisers.  Do not try to do both jobs (preparing a car and preparing the event).

When this 'hobby' became expensive, I gave up racing to become an organiser and I think some teams over here in the UK were grateful for that.

I did not know of Mike's announcement to his racers beforehand, nor did I expect him to tell me personally as I had not expected to be in LV myself during '09.

I am uncertain as to the status of the business, but it (MKM) was their main revenue source.  Clearly the analysis for this year for open road racing was not good.  So far better to not hold any events rather than make substantial losses.

The announcement does say that Mike is looking at the LSR option(s) (amongst other motor sports) in '09 so as to plan what can be done by MKM in 2010 or beyond.

Thanks for the offer of using a car should the Lovelock/Pershing event get the green light.  I will have to discuss it with Jane before going any further.

Nothing firm in the arrangements so far, but I am advised by the BLM that I should expect to be in the area in June to meet with them.  Malcolm UK

An explanation,

We had to chat here, on the Nellis AFB site, as LVMAXX has felt slighted by the WCTA organisation committe (for questions about their event at the other end of the State of Nevada - Pershing/Lovelock).

I do not understand what has happened, but Richard will no longer post on the other thread for the WCTA - as he has made promises to Jon ('the Boss') not to air differences in the forum.  I posted there seeking confirmed dates as I should be able to make plans to be in the USA in '09.

Even from the UK I would hope both Pershing/Lovelock and Nellis AFB will be run as LSR events - just a shame that MKM will not be hosting the one at Nellis AFB this time.

Nor was he ever a part of the Pershing County event -  at his request -
So what we have here is a very uninformed individual making numerous unsubstantiated statements in a forum where he percieves that he has no accountability for his posts or actions.  Funny -  he made his "last post" on this subject a few weeks ago in another forum -  but I guess he figures he can hide out here and snipe away!
Richard, I Never understood why you spend so much time doing this -  instead of actually getting your car ready to run (either of them).
How long have you been at this now?  and how much have you spent on this hobby?
and how many sucessfull competitive runs have you actually had?  in either car?
Seems to me you ought to be concerned with actually getting a car ready to run (and by that, of course, I mean finding people to do the work for you) -  before you start looking for more venues that you cannot compete in -  because your cars are not ready!

MKM will not be running their open road events or the 'High Roller' Mile speed event at Nellis AFB, as they have closed their operation for 2009.  I have e mailed Mike but have not had any response.

Unless someone else picks up the baton there appear (from here in the UK) to be no Nevada located mile events in the near future.

Fallon was a suggestion based on having events with the rivalry & support of Air Force and Navy Air wings.

Malcolm:

Maybe you should either find the story in the archives -- or re-tell it for the entertainment of those that are relatively new to this Forum.  Heck, now that I think of it -- that was before there WAS a Forum on landracing.com.

And when you tell the story - be sure to put it in the ECTA section.

Back to the Laurinburg 17 -- I wasn't there for the ordeal and don't know for sure just where the restaurant is/was located.  I believe it's now gone, consumed by flames.  Was it the place that's directly across the lawn from the Pine Acres Motel (now it's Jerry's Bar-B-Que)?

Attnetion everyone:   Pester Malcolm 'til he tells the story.  It's a sad tale of racers gone wild!
