Well here goes. I would like to build a new car for the GMC 6 that I built last winter. I would entertain the thoughts of selling my current car #787 Studebaker, after I get into the 200 mph club next speed week. The car ran 4 times this past speed week, the fastest exit speed was 242.3 mph. The turbo chargers are too small for the engine, so I am going to install 2 larger turbos this winter. I would help the new owner or owners with the car at speed week. If interested, email me at garyhartracing@yahoo.com. The selling price is $49,500.00.
-
Gary.................Why did you jinx yourself?????????????????? You know better than that...JD
-
JD, I know I had a weird feeling about it, but I wanted to feel out the possibilities. The car ran so good this summer and with larger turbos, I think it will get the job done.
-
For any interested folks -- please note that this car can run on the Salt -- and also on the pavement at Maxton. I've seen it there, too -- right, Gary?
If I were a four-wheel kind of guy I'd give it serious thought -- having parked next to it, in impound, more than once.
-
That is a good looking car, I would have considered it if I had just not bought a 53 Stude to start work on!!!
The post came a few weeks to late. (plus I have to have the cage built so I can get in and out) and on a go fast car like that it is much more involved...
Good looking Car,, I sure hope it sells to someone who can appreciate it...

Very COOL car,who ever gets it will get one heck of a ride

For those interested, this car has a megasquirt EMS that's been carefully mapped on a loadbearing dyno. No effort was spared on making this a reliable runner, in fact the engine is 100% streetworthy. Nothing against Gary, but if your wife can handle a four speed - she can drive this car easily.
It makes flat torque off idle all the way to 6000rpm. When we're done with the new turbos, it'll pull harder up top but still maintain complete drivability. Our theory in tuning this one was NOT to go with "gigantic" turbos that make crazy peak horsepower, instead we tuned it so that 3/4 throttle = 3/4 power, 1/2 throttle = 1/2 power, etc. making it a very drivable combo on the salt. This car is a great example of a proper running EFI car with impeccable manners. It starts without throttle on a cold winter day and idles like granny's oldsmobile. I'm proud of how it runs and would be happy to help the future owners with any questions or help they needed.

I'll vouch for all of the above. I've been at Gary's in Missouri in the dead of winter when the car has been sitting and it starts instantly. I've ridden shotgun in it down some of the local country roads there with a big grin on my face. Great car and besides getting Gary in the 2 club I'll bet it gets some others in down the road,

This may or may not be the new car.

Looks like a bulletnose Land Cruiser. Plan on chopping the top?
-
aircap, I'm told that a Land Cruiser has a vent window in the rear door. I'm not about to try a top chop, i'm too lazy....
-
looks like the fender badge may say Comander
-
I believe the Land Cruisers also had a little bit longer wheelbase (for stability over 200?).
-
With the addition of a propeller on the bullet, you would run in the Propster Class (open record) with minimal competition.......... :-D
-
Stability over 200?? with a 6 banger GMC??? I think not... should be fun anyway....
-
I brought the Studebaker home from the Library Sunday. Yesterday I removed the turbos from the car, today I will box them up and send them off the be modified.
-
I just received the turbos back from Tims Turbos in Falls Church Virginia. He clipped the wheels on the exhaust side and installed new compressor wheels and housings and did a total rebuild. Here is some photos.
-
Gary it looks great and I'm sure it is going to go fast. I see a red hat :-). Now about taking it easy the first run down the salt...........................
I still remember the ride around the country side there in the Stude very well. Good memories,

Sumner, you know how my race mentality is, pedal to the metal.
-
So why are the air inlets/cleaners under the hood now instead of out front like before?
-
Micheal, you got a good eye! We thought that we were getting to much turbulence around the air filters. We can run it on the chassis dyno first without the frontend then we can run it with the frontend on and use a large fan to blow into the grill opening and compare the results. The intercooler does a good job, last August we went from 60 some degrees to about 105 degrees on the IAT. We shall see..
-
Here is the latest video of the dyno tuning runs using the modified turbos. youtube.com/watch?v=pDgOyDFFMEM youtube.com/watch?v=pDgOyDFFMEM (http://youtube.com/watch?v=pDgOyDFFMEM)
-
Looks great--Will be intresting to see if the heat vs turbulence pays off---God you just HAVE to love our magnificent obsessions!!!!!!!
-
Sparky, the intercooler does such a great job of cooling the intake charge. I think it will have to work just a little harder now. Last August our incoming air temps went from 60 to 105 degrees running 5 miles. We shall see. I have since added some heat shields between the exhaust headers and the air filters.
-
Everyone is looking at the nice new turbos - I love the valve lash settings and the oil qty on the inside fender well, oh and the do not lean on this brace. True hot-rod! :-D
-
If more time than 2 days go by, I can't remember anything, address, phone number, name, valve lash, plug gap and everything else.
-
Don't feel bad Gary, I'm 37 and I still put a huge piece of masking tape on the starter button with a note to remind me that I backed the loaded rocker arms off for storage over over the winter. I'm not sure if this helps valve springs or not, but I figure it won't harm anything of I remember to set the lash before starting. I hope its worth it since it takes me an hour and a half to set the lash!
-
The Studebaker is still for sale. Looking for someone who wants to go fast and straight, I need the cash to build my next project.
-
This car is still for sale, would honor the Clunkers for Cash deal without taking the clunker.
-
Check out the December issue of Hot Rod magazine for a photo of car #787. John at Limit Engineering is rebuilding the turbochargers as we speak.
-
I received the rebuilt turbos from John Craig at Limit Engineering a couple of weeks ago. Got the car running over the weekend. I will offer the same deal as before with one exception, the price is reduced to $39,500.00. The car is the current record holder at 240.9 mph and went 248.8 mph last summer at Speedweek.
-
Gary, are you building another vehicle for Bonneville or are you finished racing there? We hope you have another vehicle in mind.
-
Troy, I already have the GMC engine built. It will be turbo charged and EFI, will run XO/BGALT. I have to sell the Stude first.
-
I hope I don't get into trouble by SSS for moving this to the top. I would make the same deal as before on the sale of the #787 Studebaker. Quoting Don Pennington, "the #787 Studebaker is the fastest stock bodied car".
-
Who is Don Pennington? Hey, are you going to bring it to Bonneville this year if you don't sell it?
-
Troy, Don Pennington wrote a book entitled, 219 Studebaker's Favorite Son. It is a book about Bruce Geisler. Yes, the plan is we are going to SW, we are going fossel hunting on Thursday in Wyoming, then arrive on the salt around noon on Friday.
-
G H you can fossel hunt at Bonneville too, just go to the timing stand :-P
-
And the pits, stageing lanes, aww there everywhere.
Fred

:-o I resemble that remark!

Moving to front page also Thundersalt. Good luck.

:-D

Had bad luck again with the turbo, lost the left one at the 4 mile. I am retiring from land speed racing. Will sell the car as a roller for $15000 or complete for $30000. Also have -20 suit, boots, gloves and other safety items. Email garyhartracing@yahoo.com or phone 417-742-3068
-
Heres hoping you live long and prosper!!! :-)
-
retiring from LSR :-( will definitely help the Prosper part :-) maybe not the Long live part :-(
-
Retire!?!?!
You've got too many irons in this fire to retire - the Jimmy 6, the straight-eight Buford . . .
Gary, there's no twelve-stepping salt addiction. I'll accept your decision, but I am saddened.
Chris

You're going to get pretty bored in a rocking chair. Although it's not like you would ever sit in a rocking chair, much less even sit.
You're more than welcome to ride out with us any time if you miss the salt.
-
Gary,
Having just tallied up the build costs on my 53 Studebaker, I can assure anyone out there that the asking price for your car as a roller is A DEAL for them... No way it could be built to that level for twice that....
You and your car where one of the cars that inspired me to build mine, your retirement before I could make it to the Salt so our two cars could run together.
Enjoy your retirement, good luck on selling that salt proven Stude.

Charles,
Your chance to buy a good backup, at a steal. Don't hesitate or it will be gone.

No need to buy a back up for "purpose built perfection" LOL !!!
All kidding aside, GH's car is very nice and FAST, but One Stude is enough for me, the Vicky is LSR retired and will be used for Nostalgic and Vintage Drag Racing, local car shows and just plain having fun...
Charles
-
Let's get this back to the top.
-
I have a feeling GH's fine Stude will be sold soon.
I can not disclose the source of my info, but understand it "may" happen soon.
To GH, I hope you sell the Stude as it is your wish to do so, to the perspective buyer, I know you will have a good car and have a lot of fun with it.
Charles
-
It's still for sale.
-
The turbos have been rebuilt by Limitengineering in Lake Havasu City Arizona. The car is race ready and still for sale.

Gary I don't know why that Chevy motor does't make double the power your making. How much boost you running and you do have an intercooler.
That is just way to little of a price for such a fine car, 4 link suspension all the right stuff for a 300 mph car [wish I had your front fenderwells on the 222 car] :-) and just a backup run for the two club on your 248 mph run.
Hope you reconsider and give it another try.

I would trade you for a 250+ mph bike... If not no worries...hope to see it run again at Bonneville.

"I would trade you for a 250+ mph bike... "
Do the brass balls go with the bike? :-D
-
No Michelle and I are getting married soon, I am sure she will be carrying them around for a while yet...
-
I've tried to step away from the salt a couple of times and just can't seem to set aside the fellowship with such a great bunch of folks, the sounds, speed, inovation and need for speed. Take a breath or two, step back and then decide. We would miss you and your Stude way to much,
Happy New Year,
Dave Haller

Michelle, I hope your marriage doesn't get you brass raisins.

John, we make 17 psi boost and, yes we do have an intercooler, the incoming air temp is 105 degrees max, startes out about 60 degrees.

Michelle, I hope your marriage doesn't get you brass raisins.

No she will be fine...

A wedding is an official ceremony where a woman transfers the custody of her sons balls to her daughter in law.Thats all.

Dr.Garrgles, is that an Up Front or an Out Back transfur?

That is entirely dependent upon the negotiation between the interested parties , a safe bet is it will the most expensive and difficult method. HOWEVER, if the cheaper method exacts greater humiliation and provides more photo opportunities then that will of course place greater strain on the "negotiation" between the interested parties as to which method is finally used, this is under no circumstances to be misinterpreted as a signal that other parties should enter the discussion.
what?
Yeah OK I have to work today, New Years eve....and it's a little quiet.
BTW. What is a "Bucks Night"?....well that when a man calls up some drinking partners to help him celebrate the upcoming significant moment when he'll catch a fleeting glimpse of his balls. Significant for a number of reasons it marks the overlap of several eras, and the beginning of others .More next semester.
Summer Reading: "No matter who's got them, they're breaking them": A study of mens balls and why it makes no difference as to whether your wife and mother in law are friends or at war.
Anyway, back to the Buick.
-
Your explanation opened too many old wounds.
Anyway, back to the Buick.
Is the Buick a STROKER? Does it have a Long Crank?
Does it require a special lubricant to keep it from sticking or ceasing?
If the girl is from "down under" will she understand a Yank?

The car has found a new home, Redding CA, Gene Adams is associated with the project, probably will see a HEMI in the future.

Gary,
Did you sell it as a roller or complete?
Thanks,
Tom G.
-
Tom, it went as a complete car with one bad turbo on it. I had a lot of fun with it and met a lot of great people, glad I got to do it. There is a lot of people around who has never drove a car 200 MPH let alone 248 MPH.
-

Gary,
I was still giving some thought to your car, versus starting from scratch. But seeing as my situation still has not changed (I still have only a one car garage), I want to thank you for removing temptation from from the thought process, by find a new home for your car. I still want to try LSR, but my plans are on hold for a little while.
-
We're not getting any younger. If there is some way you can get a project going go for it. They always take time to build, modify and all the stuff we all do. The rewards are beyond words, the friends you make out on the salt or at the lakes are the very best and there is nothing on this planet quite like Freddie Danzenfelzer and the other heavy hitters going by at 350 plus shaking the ground as they truck on down the course. It's even better when your behind the wheel.
Good luck and hope you get started soon. 8-)
-
My first trip to the salt was in 1997, we were on the starting line and Al Teague whacked the throttle on the #76 and it echoed off the mountains, boy, that still gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.
-
There is no other sound quite like a Hemi with a hi % to give one goose bumps
