Title: Tape
Post by: fredvance on July 29, 2008, 01:24:18 PM
What kind of tape do you m/c guys use on your headlight and turn signal lenses? Also do you have to keep the tape on the lens or can it go on the fairing at all?

Duct tape is probably the most common, followed closely by the misspelled duck tape.  A good-quality transparent tape (i.e. Scotch package sealing tape) will work, too.  There's no penalty for having the stuff go beyond the border of the glass -- unless the style cops are on duty.

Whatever tape you use will likely leave some residue on the surface, especially because of the heat making the sticky stuff extra sticky.  Consider cleaning it off as soon as you can after the event.  Do this on all the tape -- headlight, sealing the seams of the bodywork, holding the video camera to the seat, whatever.

There is a product named GOOF OFF and most big box hardware stores have it. Great stuff for removing sticky stuff.

I use ducT tape (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Health/Safety/Products/Related/?PC_7_RJH9U52300A9E023IJD0GR3O74_nid=GS4MT8VX2SgsHDSVSV648CglHXT1KQK8R2bl) on some things;

But we've found at Maxton that the blue painters tape (http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/painting_masking/painting_masking/product_information/scotch-blue_painters_tape/) stays on well over 200mph and comes off of the bike much easier without leaving the sticky goo. Has anyone at Bonneville used the painters tape? Does it hold up ok out there?

I was wondering about that blue masking tape, since my bike is blue, well you know. :-D

DUCT tape it is, except when it's called "Racer's Tape" or as we called it in one of my past professions, "Missile Tape"-- but that was olive drab.  :-)

I use the blue tape all around the edge of the carpet in the truck and it sticks to the carpet and door sill and plastic in the center consol. I then tape down the rubber mats to the tape with more blue tape over lapping as I do it. It's pretty water proof as well, it takes a little time. Make sure you  clean the plastic sill with thinner so It stick,

Sticky-stuff remover:  There's also "Goo-Gone", available in many stores.  And then there's a 3M product, sold in auto parts/paint stores, for adhesive removal.  It's pretty much like a Goo-gone product except much more volatile (use in well-ventilated areas!!).  I use a quart every two or three years for removing old stickers on the truck and bikes.  And yes,s the 3M product works on years-old tape residue.  I apply a dampened rag and hold it on the residue for a few minutes, then start working on the stuff with more liquid, more rag, more elbow grease.

As for painter's tape -- I haven't used it, but I've seen it lots of times and have every expectation that it's just dandy -- and probably just as available as duct tape or duck tape.

The best product for goo removal is hands down 3ms adhesive remover.
It is 100% natural and smells great....it is even safe for food contact.

I discovered this stuff cleaning contact cement off of the roller bearings from the laminate trimmers used to make counter tops I occasionally have to build.

I now use this stuff for all types of glues, markers and road tar whatnot.

A superior product can not be beaten.
If you get a chance you should try this stuff!

If you want some style points they make a chrome metal tape used for higher temp HVAC.
This tape looks really cool and with careful trimming will make it look like your headlight is chrome.

Available at the domeheapo

I use lacquer thinner her at the shop, but I'm always in a hurry. We do a lot of decals on rv's. A good trick is to soften up the adhesive with the chemical of your choice and scrape it off with a plastic bondo spreader. Saves on rags and the snotty goo doesn't get all over you hands.

JH, the stuff I meant is definitely NOT what you've shown us.  Yours probably is way more friendly to the DNA than what I use -- mine comes in a quart metal can that's covered with warnings and bright red lettering!  I'll have to find some like you use and see.  I don't have a can here at the house -- maybe will shoot a photo and send it to you tomorrow, just for the reference of it.

And about blue -- well, a couple of years ago Nancy gave me a roll of duct tape for the bike, labelled it "200 mph tape", and sure enough, it was blue.  Blue's good.  Just ask Bobby Vinton.

LSR list. Something that would be a great asset to this web site would be a section for getting ready, what to take for bike, car and trailer support. Also sub sections in it to list such items such as the the tape and cleaners etc. as above. It would need an index so anyone could go into the area of interest. We go through this every year and each year  and new questions and answers happen. There are a lot of personal lists and I am sure they would love to share with others in LSR.

What to do when you get home as far as clean up and what best to use. Also talking about how to handle your own safety while on the salt. This would be an active forum all year and could include  El Mirage,  Maxton, Texas mile etc. We could call it Bonneville and LSR racing Prep. or some other title. Each of the venues can be broken down for their local needs.

Lets think about this and feel it out. :-D Input from each of you might save a lot of head aches down the road for newer racers.

Glen, I've called your bluff, so to speak.  Check out the new boards I've put up -- see if you think they're labelled correctly, and maybe start the ball rolling with some of your ideas.

Hah -- at least I didn't appoint you as a moderator, although I might. . .

Down near the bottom -- in the Non-LSR section.  I just looked at 'em for the first time and re-farkled the layout, so try again.  I might have to move 'em a bit -- but it's a start.

Fred and others,

The Blue painters tape works great and also the "Low tack" Red stucco tape..

Also when taping over the lense (headlight and taillight) you can unplug the bulbs or keep them from coming on (fuse) and still be legal for the Production classes, this assist's the removal of the tape residue very well.

And just so those that do not know, you do not have to cover the entire lense with tape to be legal, all that is required is a strip in the shape of a cross or also an X.

And if you want to know why we now have to tape over the plastic see me at the salt and I will tell you about the rule and why it was changed in the rulebook.

Good luck and see you there..

J
