Title: Open rear or ????
Post by: Sumner on December 21, 2004, 01:05:00 PM
I'm building a J/GL with about about a 51 inch hub to hub width front and rear and the car will have about a 13 foot wheel base.

If you had your choice of an open rear or spooled rear, which would you run and why.

 Thanks for your opion,

 Sum

I have run both and would run an open rear untill I experianced spinning one tire at speed. Not likely with a "G/GL".

If you use a locked rear and spin take it out. If you use an open rear and spin put one in....Words from an old salt racer I overheard once..But I think perfectly round and same size tires at the same pressuse would make a lot of sense either way. JD

I was thinking about putting a mini-spool in my 8-inch Ford rear (for my C/CGALT Pinto), but I've decided that since launching is not an issue and I'm going to be running an automatic, the open diff will probably work just as well. Then again, I don't have salt experience, so I could very well be talking out the ol' butt....   :D

Thanks Rich, JD and Gary for your thoughts.  I guess I'll keep it an open rear with provisions to lock it if that seems better.
