Title: Woo Hoo .. It Runs
Post by: Cajun Kid on June 11, 2008, 06:28:59 PM
Well as of 5:30pm today my tiny SBC motor for my "E" class 33 ran on the dyno and lived...
Pulled strong to 8300 rpm's... I plan to put an 8200 chip in the MSD Box for added protection from my lead foot.

Hope to get the motor in and fire it in the car by this weekend, button all the loose ends up by next weekend,   go fiind a good straight road and give her a road test before Maxton,  so with out some unforseen problems, I should make the meet at the end of the month,,,

Oh man do I feel like most of the presure is off now that I heard it run.. So excited I forgot to film or record it.. oh well...

See ya at the Track

Congratulations!

Worthwhile projects seem to move in a way a friend of mine referred to as "steady by jerks".  You hit a plateau, then progress, then you hit another plateau, and sometimes it gets you down.  But then, after a lot of work, something as simple as hearing an engine run just gives you new found energy, and something to shout about.

So a big "Woo Hoo" back at cha, chief!

Thanks Milwaukee,, you are right I was feeling  "lower than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut" seems like nothing was going right, nothing on schedule and everything was going over budget all at the same time.  But I hope my luck has turned, at least hearing the engine run has given me new positive energy to continue on.

Thanks again for your note.

What were the numbers?

Now how did I know that question would come up??

Keep in mind we have no reference point for a SBC motor with this small displacement and I have a handshake deal with my motor guy/sponser  not to discuss all the "details".

But since I own it and so am damn proud that it ran today... I can say this ...

Our HP goal on race gas with 1 carb was at least 2HP per cubic inch. I can say with a smile "we are happy"
Now I am a bit disappointed with the TQ figures, as they are about 100 less than the HP numbers.
Since we have nothing to guage this against (since we have less than 260 cubic inches)
My Street Rod 383 SBC had 502 HP and 498 TQ at the flywheel, I guess that is because of the big bore and longer stroke, this motor is small bore and smaller stroke)
However,
It runs like a 2 stroke, pulling good to 5000 then WHAMMM!!!! it hits so hard and pulls like a banshee from 5000 to 8400...

I hope this ansers your question without me being numerically specific... LOL

Charles

P.S.  in 2 weeks I may be humbled when it does not go fast in the car on the track, then It would have just been a dyno sheet with no real runs to back it up... man that would be bad...so I hesitate to be to confident.. But I am still smiling, that is better than the emotions I have been having for the last 6 weeks when we missed May meet at Maxton...

Deb,, glad to hear from you... I am so ready to suit up, fire that lil SBC and make my first run at Maxton...

Now Deb,  this latest creation is not as good looking as my Orange 39 Chevy or my Yellow 36 Roadster,,
But I still think she looks good, (if satin black can look good) I guess it is in the eye of the beholder...

See ya soon,

Charles

HP is a formula---R's are just as important as TQ---if you have the R's---one can change the Final Drive Ratio with tires and Gear Ratio!!!!!!  be safe and gear it RIGHT for the TRACK and the ENG!!!!!!!!!

Sparky, I am with you on that... I have good power (at least on the dyno to 8400) At the track I will not turn more than 8200... The question is can she actually pull the car to those RPM's

Sum from Utah has sent me his gear charts, so I think I have a good idea of trans ratio, tire height and RPM's and how they all relate to each other and translate to MPH...

If car happens to top out before the traps, I can make some adjustments with tire height, I am starting out with 27" tall tires,, can go up to 29 or 30 if need be.. cheaper to have 2 extra pairs of rear tires and eaiser to change tires than the rear gear on a 9" Ford...

Now if it has not reached top speed at the traps, I can not go shorter than the 27" tires I have, so I will then have to put a lower gear in....

I think I have a good base setup in the car now, but time will tell.

Thanks for the input..... not if the car has the output  !!!!  LOL

Rear gear is 3.25   tire size is 27.1     1st gear 2.52   2nd gear 1.53  3rd. is 1.0

that should work may need less gear/taller tire, but that should be damn close.Cant wait to see it run.
