Hi Dan- I assume you are renting a car at RDU.  Have them get you to Rt 40 near the airport, head to  I-95 south toward Fayetteville.  South on 95 to exit 14 ( About 65 miles on 95) turn right on us-74. go about 15 miles or so.  Are you coming in late and staying in Laurenburg or next am to the track. There is an exit off 74 to the airport and ECTA puts up signs to the track. It's a couple hours from RDU.
If the crik don't rise I'll be there with my firebird.  I won the rattiest car competition ( very informal but agreed on by Keith Turk) last fall.  They said the rusty studebaker with magic marker on it was done on purpose and therefore not in the race.  Is white with a "patina" and a red hood.  Assuming no problems will be on the salt in August, with a paint job I hope.  Look forward to see you this weekend.

Hey, Dan - what day are you arriving in Maxton/Laurinburg?  And do you have motel reservations already -- 'cause if you do maybe we/I can give you directions right to said motel.  We're sure looking forward to seeing you -- it's been months. . .and Dan Warner at Maxton?  This is going to be cool.

We get in to Raligh-Durham at approx. 10:30PM Friday night. I guess we should have figured on Thursday. Keith told me its about 2 hours to Laurinberg so it looks like 1:00 AM arrival. We are at the Pine place, where most people stay.

Being racers a 1 AM arrival, up at 6AM to race is no big deal. Twenty or thirty years ago maybe, LOL.  We'll see how it plays out.

Any info you can provide is welcome. Map Quest died on me when I look for an out of California location today.

Dan,

Pine Acres is in Laurinburg not far from 74 Laurinburg exits beyond the airport by a few mins if coming in from I-95.  Both exits put you on streets that join just to the south of 74.  Pine acers isn't far from there.  Stay on 74 BYPASS from I-95, old business 74 takes you into Maxton proper and lost [been there, done that].  Hopefully Slim can chime in with more specifics, sorry I can't, more of visual navigator myself.

Hope you have a good trip and if you get a chance look me up, I'll be playing go-fer on the #260 REMR.

                      Take care,

                      Ed Purinton

Damn -- I was afraid someone would call my bluff.  I don't know the name of the streets or the highway numbers -- just how to get there.  Anyway, when you get to Laurinburg on US74, head SOUTH on US 15/401.  It's a couple of miles from 74 to Pine Acres and three or four stoplights, which motel will be on the RIGHT/west side of the road about a half-block after a stoplight.  That last intersection has Jerry's Bar-b-Que on the right/far corner, and a few hundred feet down the road is the first of two entrances to Pine Acres.  Watch for the speed bumps as you enter the motel parking area -- and of course -- you'll know you're in the right spot when you see all the cars with race stickers/2 Club licenses/etc.  The lobby is at the back of the U-shaped drive -- and if you're not arriving 'til 1AM or so, maybe you should ask Keith or me or someone to pre-check you in so we can have the key waiting for you, or have your room open with the key inside, or something like that.  The lobby closes earlier than that, I think -- maybe not, but play it safe.  If you want to do so and haven't already made plans for late arrival, feel free to call me and I'll try to help.  Nancy and I leave dark and early tomorrow morning for the 1,200 mile ride and arrive Laurinburg Thursday suppertime.  Our truck phone is 906 361 6282.  See you at the track, if not before.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am sure we will be able to find the place.

Mike, I just replied to your PM

Jon, I did speak w/Keith on Monday and asked him to ensure that our room isn't given away due to the late arrival. Maybe someone could do a check-in by proxy for us.

Thanks again to all. It's been a long winter, I am ready to go racing. I have been watching Bar-B-Que shows on the Food Network in order to be prepared for the local cusine. I would guess there is no sushi available for us So Cal types.

Dan, just ask them for rice and raw catfish, that should help with that sushi thing...

That might be risky....you might find them sleeping in the beds and you will have the floor  :-o.

"A long winter" from a guy that lives in southern California??  Come on Dan it has just been a long time since you have been to an LSR event  8-).

Have fun,

It was tough here. Temps plummet to the low 60s, no sunshine for about 2 hours. Now I know how the gold rush guys felt in Alaska.

Hey Dan-
Don't assume there's no good sushi outside of SoCal.  Some of the best I've had was in Kansas City, Missouri, of all places.

I've got two rooms reserved at the Pine Acres but Two of the guys are waffling now so I may have an extra room come open there.  I'll post up tomorrow with my number if that comes to fruition.

Stainless,

Dan Stokes and others do a great job of ECTA reporting. Count on Scott Guthrie to be expansive on the m/c front. I will report on the cultural differences between East and West. For example, Bar-B-Q and 'shine vrs. sushi and sake.

No sun, no heat, if even damp won't dry and right now calling for 1" rain tomorrow most forecasts and maybe as Glen says sprinkles in AM Sunday.   I was  planning to leave in about an hour. I don't think will unload the car at all if I go. :(

Here's the latest forecast:  http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Laurinburg&state=NC&site=RAH&textField1=34.7661&textField2=-79.4701

As I look out the window at the Pine Acres Lodge it's cloudy and dank, but warm.  Nancy and I'll be leaving in a few minutes -- planning on spending somequality time sitting in the pickup with the wipers going.  Yesterday morning it was cool but not raining, and it turned warm enough during the day that she and I both got some sunburn.

Yesterday we teched about 50 bikes -- surrislingly large number considering it's the car guy's meet,. so to speak.  Quite a few cars, but I didn't count them.  Huge number of vehicles were on the rookie orientation ride down the track, so I guess we've got lots of new folks here.  A rear engine mod. roadster, a GT40, Crosley convertible, and the usual other suspects.

The new tower loks way too official for what we're used to -- and I haven't gone down the track to see the pavement re-do, but I hear it's dandy.

The concession stand offers new food items -- what else do we need?

Sad to see the weather turn out bad for racing as predicted. Lets hope next Month is better. And am really hoping June has perfect weather as I hope to bring an entry and let my Son drive. See if he gets bit by the bug or not.

Nancy and I just left the track and are back at the Pine Acres.  The fire/rescue crews departed the track about 10.30 or so, and we took that as a sign that racing isn't going to go on for quite a while today-- if at all.  We stayed in the truck the whole hour or so that we were out there-- too rainy for those of us that are used to snow...  The annual banquet is still on for tonight, although I hear talk of moving it.  The story:  All of the regular rooms in which we have held the banquet over the years (the college's banquet room, the National Guard armory, etc) were taken, so Tonya and Donna rented a huge tent, complete with walls and windows and all that -- and it's set up on the lawn between the Pine Acres itself and Jerry's bar-b-que, right next door.  Jerry's will be catering, anyway, so it's not all that bad.  Well, with the rain -- Ellen Guthrie called and discovered that the banquet room at the Hampton Innis available, so she's called Tonya and I guess there is a discussion (at highest executive levels) going on as to whether moving to the indoors (from the tent) might become a reality.  We'll kekep you posted as the day develops.

In other Maxton news, I don't know if Dan Warner and Fogy ever arrived last night.  It was raining like a bugger out there at midnight or so, when they were expected to wheel in -- and I had checked at the office to make sure that the office was open all night.  Yes, it is -- but they didn't have a reservation for either a Warner or a Fogliadini -- so I wonder where those boys ended up.  I'll letcha know if I ever find 'em.

Later. . .

Warner and Fogy, now there's a pair to draw to. Two left coasters in NC, I'll bet they will have a great time, rain or no rain...wish I were there!!!!!

Latest news:

The banquet has, indeed, been moved indoors to the Hampton Inn.  And -- we wandered out into the light sprikling rain to find the whole gang of idiots (speaking with love here) hanging around the trailer, talking and imbibing.  Well, I didn't see if or what Fogy had -- but DW had a glass of "apple pie" 'shine in his hand and sure semed to be enjoying it.  It smelled strongly of cinnamon and had a hint of aple-- and I think there is a considerable ethanol content in there, too.

More later.

Jon,

When in the South drink what is in the South. My new favorite liquid is called Apple Pie. It is manufactured in Franklin County in some state. I will look into a WC branch opening soon. If you had been awake at 6:45 Sat. morning you would have seen us discovering that we were not at the Pine Acres as Keith said. Tonya put us at the Comfort Inn.

Dan -
Let me say that it was a REAL pleasure to meet you.  All these years I've heard tell of you, and now I find you're just a regular guy with a lifetime of LSR experience (that I don't have).  I wish I'd had my Camaro there for a review by you and your cohort (I can't spell Fogl......), but as crazy as Sunday got, I likely wouldn't have had time to run it anyway.

I'll post a bit more in a new thread, but I wanted to thank you for being there and let others know what a charming dude you are.

I must say here that Fogie and I enjoyed ourselves. We were treated very graciously, although you guys kept us up way too late every night. It is nice to get to work and slow down a bit.

My observarions are that the group running the races have done a super job in preserving John Beckett's legacy. When the rain out happened everyone stepped up to pull off a two day race in a single day as best they could. The people I spoke with were just happy to be on the grounds. Like Debbie told me, she almost never gets to visit during a normal meet, too busy.

Tonya and Donna(Donya) are really the backbone here. They stepped up to each challenge as it arose over the weekend, from registration to moving the banquet, any number of things that would break someone else.

Fogie is going to see about loading a truck up with some fuel roadsters and returning to run the mile, I would like to return then also.

I can see the standing mile events like Maxton and Texas expanding into a separate LSR venue with a consistent set of records. I have heard rumblings of interest from both the NW and NE. With a single rulebook and class structure this could be a good way to bring in the young racers we so often talk about, those that will carry the sport in future years.

No, neither of us got to throw a leg over a bike this last weekend.  A fellow on this forum (Osti) offered me a ride on his production 'Busa if and when he got his licensing passes done -- but with only one day to run he made just two passes, so I didn't get the opportunity.  He showed me another phase of the LSR cordiality, though, in sending a note a day or so ago apologizing that he hadn't had the chance to let me go for a ride.  Nancy didn't ride, either, but one of these days ... one of these days, Alice -- We'll have our own bikes, you'll see!

Thanks for asking.

And his 4-wheeled ride wasn't quite ready yet, but will be at the next meet, sporting some actual HP (I hope).  We should get him to "throw a leg" over the Music With ME Camaro, too.

Yeah, it sure is a bummer about the rain on Saturday. It still was great meeting everyone. I am going to try and make it back for another meet later this summer. If my schedule works out and I do get back there you are still welcome to ride my bike.

Take care,
