Title: Contingency Payout for Fastest Nitrous Bike at Maxton
Post by: 2fast4u2c on January 15, 2008, 05:43:03 PM
As many of you already know, I have posted for the last 3 years a reward for the Fastest Nitrous Bike at Maxton.  I have received many emails of late from many who really didn't understand the reward, so I'll explain.
When I first came to Land Speed Racing at Maxton in 2003, I was under the old school practices of drag racing where rewards were given for certain achievements.  I also noticed that there were very few nitrous only bikes participating at Maxton besides me.  So in an effort to help promote our sport, I posted a reward for anyone who could beat my record I had set back then.  Since there were no takers the first year, I upped the ante to $1,000.00 where it has stood for the last 3 years.  The sport of Land Speed racing is for records and bragging rights and fellowship of friends.  There has never been (that I'm aware of) actual winnings or rewards for going fast.  I only wanted to help promote our sport with a class of bikes that could readily be outfitted with nitrous oxide (bolt on systems) at an affordable price and possibly bring new blood to our sport.
Posted below are the rules I imposed for this reward.

Tiger Racing will pay $1,000.00 (U.S.D.) to the owner of the fastest "Nitrous Only" open wheeled motorcycle here at Maxton at the end of the season. The current world record is 228.803mph at Maxton currently held by Tiger Racing.

You must display a Tiger Racing sticker on both sides of your motorcycle to compete in this contest.

All the key words are there, Owner - Nitrous Only - Open wheeled - stickers on both sides

This is of course only available on a year by year basis on my descretion only since it's my money.  The mail I have received has been mostly negative.  Statements of "I'm whoring the sport" and "buying customers" are a bit offensive, but I'm thick skinned and will honor my commitment for 2008.  I would really like to hear from you old salties and others whom I respect in this sport about what I have done.

I've already committed for 2008, and any and all comments would be welcome.

thanks in advance.

Guy

I sure dont see anything wrong with what you are doing. It would be nice if the record holder in my class would pay me 1000 bucks if I could beat his record. As a former amatuer drag racer and road racer there was always contingency money available.I will be putting a tiger racing sticker on my bike,my chain guard is so nice I want everyone to know who made it.

Guy,

You have given back more to this sport than most people will ever know. Your sponsorship of the nitrous record at Maxton speaks volumes about your dedication to seeing the sport grow.
How many other racers would PAY to have their record broken?? I only know of one person.
Tiger racing has sponsored countless racers over the years and has also sponsored regular riders with holiday give-aways.

Hats off to you Guy keep up the good work!

Guy, I think you are helping the sport, and I applaud your efforts to draw folks to Maxton to challenge your record there.  My vote is POSITIVE, it is a great idea...  :-o

In fact it is such a good idea, I think I will take a lesson here and offer a cold beer to anyone taking a Bockscar record.  :|

Guy, come out and see me on the salt and I'll buy you a beer for helping the sport  :-D

Guess I should add that I am not an old salty, only been at it for about 30 years, but you still get the  8-)

When BUB first offerd prize money for his event it raised quite a stir among traditional LSR folks. I can understand both sides but in the real world who doesn't want to win a couple of bucks if you can. At BUB several sponsors have stepped up to offer money in several classes. It draws attention to the class and to the sponsors products. It is all for a good cause, good on ya for offering the money and for supporting the sport of LSR.

I don't think most true LSR salt flat racers want to see it turned into a money thing. Not much of a chance for the new or small budget racers to be in a position to win. Just my opinion.

A well thought out contigency program can bring new companies into the sport and create more  interest in LSR  both on a commercial and participant level, that is ultimatly good for the sport. A reward program does not necessarily have to reward the fastest or the number one participant. I have been responsible for prize offerings that reward down through the field and the programs have been very succesful.

Not sure any LSR guy would turn down a little cash or a rebate on parts for setting a record.  Everyone I know tries or have tried to get a little sponsorship, it's the same thing only different....
Now put a $1M prize out there for the first guy to 500 and I'll bet Marlo and several others are ready to race this season...  :-D

At the Truck Stop, right?

Ya gotta hand it to Joe -- when he yells "Four", you better look out.  And he's not even a golfer!

Would you believe, in all the past years attending
the BUB Trials......I have yet to see anybody turn down any of the $ that they won for going fast.
.............and these are all "true LSR salt racers".......
Just my observation.....................................................

The comments are appreciated.  JoeA, your record was on a 1K if I recall, it took me a long time (and a lot of luck) and an extra 400cc just to compete with your record.  The "Tiger" is not really salt friendly.  Polished aluminum and chrome doesn't do well there I'm told.  But you never know when I might tap you on the shoulder out there.

You have inspired me.  My Camaro is sponsored by my wife's music studio (at least on paper), so I'll offer a free music lesson (in Wilmington, NC) to anyone who can break 200 with a stock block inline Chevy 250ci six!  I think I'm fairly safe on that one.

All BS aside, I see no problem with what you're offering.  I'm a LSR newcomer so maybe I'm the wrong guy to chime in, but that's my take on it.  And I know you are one of the gentlemen of the sport and have absolute faith that your motives are in the right place.

Looking forward to seeing you in April

Yeah, she's a beauty.  She's on the dyno right now getting tuned up for Maxton.  But a dyno is no subsitute for track time and a logging computer.

Hey Guy, :-D
Guy you said you would pay 1,000.00 dollars to the OWNER of the bike
but did not say the owner had to ride it.
If I am riding one of our bikes but do not own the bike and break your record the owner will still recieve his 1,000.00 dollars correct ?
Sal.

correct, if you have the fastest MPH for a nitrous only open wheeled bike at Maxton, the owner gets the money, not the jockey. Unless of course the jockey is the owner.
