Hey all,
Any suggestions about selecting a used 1000cc-up bike that would be a good compromise for street use AND Salt racing between $5000-7500? Over the past 30 years I've owned Yamahas, Kawis, Hondas, a 1000 Suzi, an XLCH, and most recently, an FXSTC.
I've been out of the sport bike scene for a really long time, but I prefer canyon carving to bar hopping, so I'm leaning towards a Buell or a Japanese sport bike. P or M chassis & P, PP, PS, BG, BF, PBF engine class.
Thanks, James

I would go for the one you like best.

Yuck! That terrible "AND" word.
It might help to look at the records and work from there.

In that price range any Busa you would actually want to buy is probably out, but a GSXR 1000 is certainly doable. You already have leathers, or is that a separate budget? They aren't cheap!
I would buy the bike I would want to run on the salt, and compromise the street because it's going to be an all out race bike at some point! :)
I don't know why it is, but records just under 200mph always catch my eye ;)
I've heard the GSXR 1000 shares motor mounts with the 600 and 750 which would get you lots of choices down the road.. (or is this just false rumors?)

I think that is true as when I was doing research on my 750 I think I read where guys were putting 1000's in the frames,

the last gsxr series with interchangable motor mounts was the "w" series 92 gsxr600, 93-95 gsxr750 and 93-98 gsxr1100 will all interchange... JE has a real nice 907 big bore kit for the 750. you can usually pick up a "w" 750 for around 3g.... the '96 up gsxr600 and 750 will interchange motors but the 1000 needs advanced frame mods to shoe horn a 1000 motor into the smaller chassis.... none of the hondas will interchange... a 94-98 zx9 will fit into a 96-00 zx7 chassis but they dont have a 600 worth a crap... right Jon?..... the yam yzf600-750 will swap but they dont have a 1000... everyone knows pre "R1's" are crap so dont waist your time...
good luck

Thanks for the ideas guys! Good points about the records and motor interchanges. Will let you know what I buy.

First generation busas have depreciated since the 08 Busa came out. expect to pay between 5-7k for a good one less for a bike with "history".
if you start out with the stock busa its good for 185-190mph. Then put a small nitrous kit on it and it should be good for 210-215mph. then put a turbo on it and run in the 240-250+mph range. you can run 1350cc, 1650 and 2000 engine classes.
I just sold a bike that went 216mph for less than 5k that came with three spare engines and a truckload of spares.
The hayabusa are the small block chevrolets of the motorcycle world. reasonable price, very durable and tons of aftermarket support.

Jason,
You need a new career choice. Used bike salesperson is not your best bet. Turn in your white belt.

I guess I would suggest something older.
The reason being if its over 7 years old parts are cheap on the internet and if something is alot newer it relativly more expensive and harder to find.
But its just a matter how fast you want to go and what you are starting with.

Dean, the records you quote are SCTA records. This is the BUB section and we only deal with AMA and FIM records here.

This is tough because there is such a huge difference between a GSXR1000 and a Busa, but I would try to sway you toward a first gen Busa. To me, it's the perfect all-around bike. The LSR and drag racing is a given, but people don't give it enough credit in the track/canyons/touring catagory.
I've blown by 600's on the outside during track days on my Busa (on touring tires), I've put in 500+ mile days without any fatigue and it's all So. Cal canyons, and it gets ~45-50 mpg.
FYI - I picked up my mint 2000 Busa with 4,400 (not a typo) miles for $5,500 last year. In comparison, I have yet to find a decent 600 for less than that let alone a 1000. The problem is, all the squids and new riders go for the sport bikes, especially 600 and 1000's because they are cool, plus they're a little intimidated by the Busa. That will probably change in the next few years as more younger people (like myself) can afford them now.
Get a Busa, you won't regret it.

Another often-overlooked reason that younger riders choose the smaller-displacement bikes - is that the insurance companies rate them by displacement and charge more per bigger bike. I've often wondered if this is why so many motors are manufactured just a hair under the next hundred (i.e. 599 cc, 998cc, etc) so that the insurance company would rate them as a 500 or a 900 (for these two examples).
Anyway, young riders commonly have very high insurance rates, so buying a small-motored ride makes economic sense to them. If you're not going to license the bike -- use it for track/Bonneville/El Mirage only -- then feel free to ignore this post.

The fastest 1000cc records at Bonneville (Amo) and ECTA (Shammas) are on Kawasakis. Just a thought :-D
