Title: Saw the Dr today...
Post by: DahMurf on June 05, 2007, 05:14:32 PM
They took new x-rays. My shoulder has dropped and moved in which has caused the bones to displace further. When I saw the X-ray I pretty much knew what the doc was going to say.

Xray day of crash:

Today's Xray:

So I'm scheduled to have outpatient surgery next Tuesday evening, 6/12, to have a plate put in to realign the bones and allow them to set and heal in their proper placement. It actually won't change my recovery time much as healing after the surgery is quicker then healing without it. Sounds like I can get back on the bike by mid/late summer. The doctor rolls his eyes & laughs at my enthusism on wanting to get back on but he's young enough that he gets it! :D (Todd asked, does this mean she can't mow the lawn to which he answered if she has a riding mower she can! ) Then the doc tells me not to fall on it again, duh, like I wanted to the first time! :-D

Looks like we'll be skipping the June meet. :( As much as we wanted to go, Todd's had to drive me everywhere since I'm not to clear to drive and now the time away from the shop for this, the shop has suffered a bit and I just don't think we can swing the money to go or the time away.

Oh well, I was overdue for a surgery anyway. Haven't had one since '99, this was damn near a record for me! I would have preferred not to have a 4-6" scar across my shoulder but what can you do! It's not like I was entering any beauty contests anyway! :-D

Well that's it for now!

Deb,

Be sure and request titanium 8-) instead of stainless parts!:-D

My youngest son works in a place that makes plates and screws and rods and all kinds of joints and bone things. And he takes his job of inspection on the titanium line very seriously as do all his co-workers. You will do well.

I failed to get the proper reconnect after a serious A-C separation a very long time ago and have regretted it ever since I started to turn old! It doesn't take too many years for that macho stuff to fall by the wayside.

About the scars......Scars add physical character to your persona.  :? As in Paris Hilton is plastic and you are for real.

Those of us out in the West wish you well and a speedy recovery! :-)

Good Luck and Best Regards,
HB2 :-D

I didn't think to ask if it was titanium! When they call to give me my surgery time I'll have to ask!

The old age achy thing was a concern expressed to me by some. I was trying to forgo yet another scar!
I figure with all the surgery I've had in the past I'm bound to be one of those achy arthritic elders. That's
kind of why Todd & I have been putting so much emphasis on getting in shape this year. The numbers are
climbing and the signs are there that we're starting to get older so we figure it's time to nip it in the bud
and get as healthy as we can now before it's too late!

As for the scars adding character, wow do I have a LOT of character! :-D

Thanks for the well wishes, they're greatly appreciated!

Deb:
Have SSS's tattoo guy make that scar into an arrow that points at the Utah I-80 Exit 4 sign directing you to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Coming from the East, have the arrow head pointing away from your neck.

Now, we have just turned and undesirable "character mark" into a life's direction symbol.

Just get well FAST.

I was 55 years old when I ran the Honolulu Marathon. You are still young.

I didn't realize they ran marathons in Honolulu that long ago...  :-o Was Hawaii a state then?

Thanks Freud!
Todd said he could design the maxton track & bend for me over the scar and something about a cone! LOL
The abuse is unending! hehehe

Wow, marathon, I'm impressed! Don't think that's something I'll ever do. All the screws & bolts used to hold me
together don't lend themselves well to running! Not to mention I don't find it very fun! LOL Guess I'll have to
renew my pool pass. That seems to be the exercise of choice for me at this point!

I usually do heal quickly as I'm not one to just sit around. Hopefully this will hold true this time! I like fast! :-D

Deb,

I have some 200 mph tape and a couple salty screws that will fix that broken bone right up...
And you could go racing by the next meet....

Tell the truth Ferd.
He only ran 60 ft with all the beer he grabbed from the store to last him the distance before they caught him.
You are in good company.
Vesco set the MC LSR with a broken collar bone from an endo in a Go Cart.
Marcia drove the MC liner in part because she had a hurt  from a "BATWOMEN" movie stunt.
You have gone faster on an open bike than either of them ever did.

Sweet! Thanks for pointing that out Jack! I like being in good company! :-D

Someone at work the other day, after hearing the whole story, looked at me in disbelief and asked, was it worth it?

I was like HELL YEAH, Dude, I went 212 mph and can't wait to do it again!!!!! Somehow that's usually met with
the roll of the eyes! I just laugh!

I found myself watching the motorcycle racers, the road race ones over the past few days. One of them wrecked &
hurt his leg & got on the back-up bike to continue the race and then race again the next day. I found myself thinking
and even said to Todd, look, they let them ride injured! That of course was met with the point of well when
there's that much money on the line, they let them race!

So, I guess I'll just suck it up & take my licks. September isn't THAT far away!

(still chuckling bout the 200mph tape Jon!)

Deb:

I am doing a report on the Tuatara lizard from New Zealand  using the PC with my 7 year old son.

He leaves to go to the bathroom.

He comes back, and I have this post up.

He sees the X-rays, asks about it, and I tell him a friend of mine had an accident and needs surgery.

We talk about how the bones need a piece of metal and screws to grow back together because they are broken.

An hour later, bedtime, it's book and a bedtime story.  We say prayers, and say one for you too.

He sits up in bed and points to his collarbone, and says "Is this the bone your friend broke?"

I say "Yes, pal, very good, you figured that out!"  (I didn't point to it or show it to him before.)

He says "When she tries to move her head, does it go like THIS?!"

And he puts it WAY down on his shoulder and arm, and rolls it around like Quasimodo!!

I am laughing my ass off and saying "No, buddy, she is OK to move her head, it just hurts a lot".

Priceless.

Hope you feel better Deb after the surgery.  Scars are cool.  I am no orthopedist, but I think it really will heal better with the plate, IMHO.

Deb, WOW, that looks broken... I was able to visit this post earlier, but only had time to take a quick shot at Freud, was on my way to a HOA meeting, ya can't slack or you miss your chance.
Sorry to hear they are going in, remind them it would be nice if you didn't end up with any problems you didn't bring in with you.  DO NOT hesitate to go right back it you have any fever or pain issues, not trying to scare you but staff infections are probably the worse "side affect" of any surgery these days.
Get well, you have the right attitude, and the support of all of us out here.  Hope to see you guys on the salt one of these days.  It is addictive....    see  ya soon

If I recall correctly,  Don Vesco broke both collar-bones a couple of times.........I remember him
roadracing with us at the Goleta Airport strapped up................I myself raced a couple of sidecar roadraces in Europe with a busted collar-bone.....in order to get your start money in those days you had to make the staring grid.  Ah, yes,

Walt,
That is great, thanks for sharing, kids are great! Todd and I were laughing as he reenacted it for me! LOL
Glad I can be used as a teaching tool & not just a good example of what not to do! :D Sounds like you have
a smart kiddo there! Thanks for the prayers, that's very sweet & touching.

Everyone else, I love the anecdotes about the LSR greats and the stories of what y'all have done. Makes me
feel a little more not so bad about this! Gives me encouragement & hopes of success the next time! I'm hoping
I can get it right before I run out of bikes to ride! (hehehehehe just kidding!)

Thanks everyone, all the posts are really awesome and helpful while I wait out the healing. What a great
group of racers I'm proud to be a part of (and happy I pulled a decent speed before I toppled over! hehehe)

Surgery went well(even with the power outages at the hospital), it
took about 2.5-3 hours actual surgery time(she was out of my site for
about 4 hours which I didn't think was going to be near the concern
it was for me). We got there at 3 yesterday and were back home by
midnite though.

Here's a preliminary pic of the repair(plate and 6 screws). We will
get a full xray in a couple weeks.

They ground up(pulverized I believe was the word?) the 1.25" long
center portion of the bone that was broken free from the inner and
outer and use it as a grafting agent to help promote growth between
plated portions.

We won't be able to see the cut(remove the dressing) for 7 days, but
I can't imagine it's going to be that substantial considering the
size of the dressing.

Again the doc and others acted like there'd be more pain then what
she's having and is only claiming and mainly eating pain pills for
the neck pain. So all is well and I'm glad to have my girl back home.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes and prayers... they seem to
have worked as always, couldn't ask for better.
Todd

We have been following her progress closely and wish a full recovery for her for sure.
I have a couple of questions though.

1. Are you the pain in the neck she speaks of ?
2. When they asked her how it happened and she told them, did they figure that was enough drugs ?
3. How did the request to make her more streamlined about the shoulders work out ?
4. Of course you know better now, but when did you realize you missed the wonderful meal time at the Hospital ?
5. Did you have to pay extra for the candlelight setting ?

Jack,
Deb says you're hurting her shoulder from the laughing and it's compounding the effect(and rather ironic when she drops her pain pills on the floor which is also from laughing).

1.I only get to claim one part of the anatomy to cause pain in... the neck is on the doc
2.Yes, until they looked at me and doubled the prescription. And the more of them I eat the less Deb claims to experience her pain(I figure they are free game if they're laying all over the floor)
3.Would of been cost-free and pain-free for the improved aero version, but ended up an extra $12k to make her as slow as she was to begin with(I thought they were both being narrow minded, just in oppositte ways)
4.Right after noticing the emergency call button attached to the bed was labeled "Dominos"
5.They wouldn't trust us with a flamed product as it might create heat above and beyond their mandatory maximum 58 degree room temerature, but luckily the emergency exit sign reflected off my noggin enough to read the latest bike mag during the outage

Your posts are always good for common sense and/or a laugh Jack... but it's even a bigger honor when caring and inquisitiveness show up together like this,
Todd

Thanks again for the well wishes. I think I'm coherent enough to be back amongst the typing! I've been reading posts each day just not typing back. Drugs are good!

The pain wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but it has been a constant dull pain so I've been pumping the drugs every 3 or so hours followed by a one hour nap!

So anyway, you've been warned, I'm back!

(pics at the bottom, you've been warned!)

1st post op follow-up today. Doc says things are looking good. He said when he got in there that small piece of bone that was in the middle was actually broke in three pieces but it was already starting to heal back together. I was happy to hear that but the bad part is he had to sort of break it apart to do the surgery. That & the fact that they ground up that piece of bone a bit to promote healing is what contributed to the surgery running a little longer then expected. I asked and he did confirm that they didn't loose power in the OR during the storm. It sounds like he wasn't really aware that other parts of the hospital had lost power!

So, where do we go from here. I'm allowed to drive. I have another week off to try to get fully off of the pain meds. (they tend to knock me out & don't lend themselves well to me being at work without a couch! hehehe) and then back to work but I'm going to take an extra week after the medical leave for a little extra R&R with my kid for vacation so I won't officially go back until 7/9. No weight bearing at all on the right side. I can start doing range of motion exercises but he really really wants this thing to heal right before I put any weight on it. We suspect that maybe he's being a little more cautious with me on this phase of the healing because he knows very clearly that I will ride again and to what degree I'll be riding again. I'm ok with that though. I'm sure I can achieve full range of motion in 4 weeks so if he gives me a green light at that time I'll jump straight into the weight training.

The incision is pretty thin right now, long, but thin, so I'm really hoping it will stay that way. Some of my other scars have spread out over time but they've mostly been on "moving" parts so I'm sure that pulled them out some. I'm hoping this one will stay small since it looks so nice already. No swimming or baths until it's healed which is a bummer since I'll be sitting pool side with the kid over the next two weeks. This is to keep the risk of infection down and I'm ok with that too.

Well I guess that's it for now other then the pics...

I know what it's like, it's been 12 weeks since I had the 7 way bypass. The worst part is the PT they put you thru after wards, that damn tread mill is killing me LOL. They released me from the PT at the cardio rehab center last week but gave me a lot more to do at home.

The scar is still there but is vertical and at least the pain is gone. Maybe next week when I can work on the streamliner at Vesco's on monday it will take my mind off the other.

Glad you are doing better, your a tough chick. Tell Todd hello
Glen :-D

Thanks Glen!
Trust me I empathize with you so much! It was so hard watching Todd go through all of that. It was heartbreaking when he could barely walk 50 yards. I agree the PT for him seemed almost brutal. However I am glad he stuck to it. He's healthier now then he's been since I met him!

I hope the same holds true for you! Good luck with the liner. Sounds like a great project to get you back in the swing of things! I hope the success you experience with your recovery is as grand as Todd's!

My little nip & tuck is almost cosmetic compared to what y'all have been through! I'm writing about it in such detail mostly because its not very common and I wanted to put some detail out there for others should they ever need it! I couldn't find much in my research and wanted to know a little more up front. Maybe it's not detailed too much cause it's just not that big of a deal. The waiting around to heal & be given the green light is the worst part! LOL

Good to hear from you Glen, keep up the recovery & let us know how it's going from time to time!

Deb...you are so fortunate with a horizontal scar.
Glen is concerned that his vertical scar tissue will wrinkle his cleavage.
Give him any support that you can document with fotos.
Documentation is covered by Medicare.
Looking is beyond description.
Soft porn can be protected as Medical Documentation.
Glen has both Medicare, Medicade and secondary coverage that pays his

He's much to shy to admit these facts.

Hey Deb,

Showed my kid the latest xray and he thought that was so cool. 8-) He started spouting part numbers for the plate and the screws. :| Whether the parts and pieces are those that he normally inspects or not, it is great to hear (and see) that you are recouping well. :-D

Just remember that it still will take some time to heal properly even with the additional supports in place. Hopefully you will allow the unsupported section to heal really well before you start trying to buck the wind again.

Back to reality!
The "vacation" is over, I went back to work today! The scar is looking really great. It's very thin & I'm really happy about it! I'm still on restriction for another 2 weeks. My follow up is on 7/20 and I'm hoping I'll get cleared to get back on the bike. My range of motion is good but my muscles in my right arm are weak. Can't wait till I'm cleared to start using it again. It still gets sore now & then but mostly when I've been real active, if I carry anything heavy with my left arm or drive for several hours in the truck. I sat on the busa over the weekend and didn't find any issues or pain in my shoulder so I'm looking forward to getting back on. I've been offline pretty much since my last post so I'm getting caught up & back in the swing of things. Here's the latest scar pic.

I have a pair of scars just the same (one each side)
Did I see a broken or cracked rib in the x ray? I couldn't lay flat for 4 weeks after my 06 crash with 3 broken ribs.
The brake looks similar to mine and fixed the same way and is now as good as new. I'm sure everything will be OK and you will be riding soon.

Don't sweat it Glen, I get to see that scar any time I want, just not yours! ;) I'm sharing mine since I had such a devil of a time trying to find a pic before they cut me. I think my count is up to 5 people now that I've found to have had this surgery. Personally, despite the scar, I'm a fan of it. It feels much better & more stable then when it was just all loose in there!

Thanks for the reminder on chat! Now that I'm back on a "normal" schedule I'll try to remember to get in there & keep you boys in line!  :-D

Twice! Yikes! What did you do? Did you do both at once or one at a time? So far all the others I've talked to have been dirt bike wrecks.

Nope, no problems with the ribs! You must be seeing a shadow. I had a bruised rib once a long time ago and it was FAR more painful then what I had with the
collarbone. I have major empathy for you for 3 broken ribs, ouchie! I've actually had very little pain. Probably only pumped the pain meds for about
4 days throughout this whole ordeal. Guess I got off pretty easy!

Good to meet you Bones!

I used to race sidecars (roadracing). We got cleaned up by another outfit,Ev and the bike went one way, right side up and I went the other way, wrong side up.That did r/h side.It was fixed with a pin through the center of the bone (a piece of threaded rod)which was taken out when healed. The second time (Lake Gairdner, l/h side) used a similar pin but it had to come out early and then I did too much and broke it and then I had it plated so now it's good as new. So now we have lots of dragracing filling the time between land speed racing

Cleared for takeoff!

Saw the Doc again today & got the all clear to get back on the bike! woohoo!
Rode the bike home from the shop & it felt good! I have to go easy on lifting &
such as the bone still isn't fully healed. He's still not a fan of me racing again
but he gets that I will! I'll see him again a couple days before the Sept Maxton
meet.

Funny thing with riding the bike is that my left thumb hurt & nothing else bothered
me. I stubbed/slammed my thumb in the get off & it's been sore & a little bound
up since. Reachin for the blinker I could really still feel the injury. I've heard it
takes a long time for a thumb to heal so I guess time will tell.

Here's the latest x-ray 5.5 weeks post op.

It's a forever keeper if I want it! They can take the plate back out after the bone is fully healed if it bothers me. The down side to removing it is that the bone is weak for a year while the screw holes heal. The down side of not removing it is if I fall on it again it's more likely that the bone at either end of the plate will break and that's not a real great situation either. At this point I'm hoping the bone will heal quickly before Maxton. I guess I'll just have to take my chances that I won't fall on it again! I'm going to race again but I plan to work on my shut down a bit before really twisting the throttle!

My buddy Walt there tried out a little something new for me last meet so I've already got a little R&D done & just have to try my hand at proper execution. Think I'm going to do a little cornering/twisty practice before the meet too, it can only help! My nutty little buddy Ali said he'll take me out for some cornering practice on the street & I guess I should take him up on it! ;)

Now the without clothes pics, he's ok with me sharing as long as I share with him too!

Deb,
I just read in Super Street Bike mag that Icon is running a monthly contest.  You send in pics of your rashed gear and a little write up and you can win new gear. I think the cut up leathers along with the 212mph story will get you something, maybe a sponsor :-).  Check it out.

Oh kewl. You know I remember seeing that several months ago but at the time I had no rashed gear! :-D I had forgotten about it. I was wearing an Icon back protector vest during the wreck too! It's unharmed & I'll be wearing it again ;) I'm gonna try to pick up the latest mag today when I hit borders for my copy of Harry Potter! Maybe I'll do that & see if I can get a little plug in for the LSR world :D Free gear is always good and being a girl, you can never have too much gear! :-)

I was in London Friday night to see the lines for the book and while I never actually saw the end, it would seem that it started to form up around your house.
How many Witches were in the story ?
I saw several hundred the other night.
Oh. and their is a billboard up around Canada that suggests that Harry Potter is a girl.
What is that all about ?

My sence of humor left many of them speechless, proably on a War footing, and if the exchange rate is any indication they are losing that too.
At $360 American for a cab from Heathrow to London, I am glad I could make his next car payment.
I did manage to fix a lot of the TO"I"LET signs with the missing "I" but there was so little time, I am sure I missed some.

Nutty is probably not the adjective I would use for Ali -- I have seen a few you tube videos that I believe he took part in.  LOL

Read the new Harry Potter book on the beach this weekend.  I have to stay out of the sun as much as possible with my new meds.  So while the kids ran up and down the beach I sat in the shade and read.   Left most of the family at the beach this morning.  I had to come back for work and to move my little truck into the driveway.  Seems my homeowners association is taking exception to it parked on the street.  The left a little nasty gram about no wipers, mirrors and expired inspection sticker.  I put the mirror back on - The wipers, and antique tags.  Inspection is going to have to wait until we install the new computer.

If it is 30 or more years old it don't need an inspection.Dan put the safety stuff on it and let it be.

I am in Virginia - I need to have the safety inspection.  I can avoid the emissions test with the antique tags - That and it is registered as a diesel.  LOL - That is what the VIN says anyway.

Read it in about 5 hours.  My curse - Reading too fast.  I have to shop at the used book store most of the time or I would go broke from buying new books.  I have to read it to keep up with the little guys.  It was long and meandering in the middle, kind of like my waistline.  LOL  A lot of history was revealed.  I will leave it at that - Don't want to spoil it for you.  I should have stayed at the beach - I might have to have an intervention with my 19 year old when he gets back. Not listening to Mom - He thinks he is older than he is.  Might have to bring the hammer down - Or tire iron.  LOL

5 hours!  :-o It will probably take me 5 weeks!
History is good, I like filling in the blanks.

Sounds like you need to visit the library not the used book store!  :-D

Good luck with the kid. Mine's just getting into the lovely years at age 13!

19 arguing with the 21 year old - 19 year old about to enlist in the Air Force is feeling his oats.  Thinks his 5' 9" toughness is a match for his 6'2" athlete brother (who is an amateur boxer).  LOL  Mom is just trying to keep the younger one from getting killed.  The 9 and 11 year old boys are laughing at the older brothers which doesn't make it any easier.  Dad had to get on the phone and threaten physical harm and not paying the insurance on their cars.  They settled down fairly quickly.

How is the bike riding coming along - Did ALI make good on his offer to help?  Are you sure you want to go there?  You might be doing wheelies at 100 before you know it.   :-D

Final follow up with the Ortho today! I'm healed, I'm healed!  :D
I've gotten more feeling back in the area of the incision which I wasn't expecting so that was a bit of a nice surprise. It's still semi-numb and imagine it will stay that way but that doesn't bother me. The area at the end of the plate near my neck is the most sensitive. There's pretty much just skin covering it so you can feel it but as long as I don't bop anything into it, it's no big deal.

Here's the latest x-rays, the area that looked like a knot is flattened & healed nicely.

My new motto, per my ortho "break records not bones"

Back on the track this weekend, look out cones!

Haven't  talked for a while. As youknow I wentr through a total knee replacement last Tuesday and came home on Friday.  Pretty sore and going through the PT twice a day. Attilla the Hun comes by the house and has a list of things to twist, turn pull, stretch in directions they have never seen. Actulally I am doing very well between screams and name calling and sweating during the torture each day.

They took me off the walker and have been using a cane to hobble around and swat the dogs. I am walking with a lot of discomfort and go back to the Doctor next week for the the post op visit. Atilla says I will be walking with out the cane in one week.

Anyway hope all is well with you and Todd.  I will start my daily visits to the web sites to see who is picking on me.

1. Look closer at the name tag or get Wifey to read it to you.
It says "Attilla the Hen".
2. Walking without the cane is a noble objective but be sure to keep it awhile longer for defence and never give it to her.
3. When I am running away to keep from getting hit by you, which way should I turn, or is it going to be a surprise ?
Jack :-D

OMG, y'all are tooo funny!!!

Glen, glad to hear you're enduring. My last bout with a knee surgery made for a very intensely painful PT experience. I didn't think I'd ever get full range of motion back. (It hurt too darn much!) I recall trying to crawl off of the end of the table to try to get away while they were trying to make my knee bend!
I wondered if a knee replacement would be less painful but I guess not! Knees are just painful no matter what you do!

I know my hip replacement was off the scale for pain! But then I was young so my pain receptors were in tip top shape!

I have the utmost empathy for you right now & I hope you get through this phase quickly!

(Keep the cane so you can beat Jack with it! ;) )

Keep us up to date on your recovery!

Todd & I are doing great! We're plotting & scheming for the 2008 race season! My shoulder is doing so well that most of the time I forget about it. The scar has blended well & is hardly noticeable. I'll have to take an update pic!
