A little news update. Announced today by the US Government. The travel ban to all US visitors likely to stay in place for at least 6 months?.  This applies to Canadians, Brits, Europeans, Aussies and Kiwis.

So it looks like Speedweek will be lacking in any international competitors which, is very sad. They can open the border for a Golfer or Tennis player but Motor Racing as usual takes a back seat.

However it can all change as we know but it looks like I will have to cancel my Hotel, my crew flights, my RV, 8 barrels of Nitro and have my race car sitting for another f*****g year.

Geoff, that sucks.

I was pondering whether to revisit my RV holiday booking with my wife for August, sites of interest to include the Utah and Nevada national parks including the saline lake district - I now know the answer to that thought.

It seems like a bit of a random selection as NZ and Aus are tracking at around 4 CV-19 deaths per million (compared to the UK at 627) so there is something personal against the antipodes in that ban.   :-(

What is frustrating is that BA are taking money and say they have flights. But, Dr Fuici I think that is how it?s spelt says very clearly.....the borders are shut to ALL Foreigners. Full stop period and not for just a few weeks. He says 6 months!!! But as we know the Scientist can be over ruled. 4 million Brits alone visit the US each year. The airlines will not survive if they don?t open the borders. London to LA is the busiest route and they had 8 flights a day ..all full. Las Vegas at least 6 flights a day.

Do not book any flights until we know what is happening.

Can you post a link to that announcement as I can't find it?  Some countries, yes, Canada, not mentioned on any article I can find.  The only article I can find is in reference to a proclamation by the President on January 20th that was effective March 13th.  A small note at the bottom of the page mentioned that it was "reviewed on June 15th."  I don't think this is a new announcement nor do I think it reflects the current state of affairs.

Your further comment: " But, Dr Fuici I think that is how it?s spelt says very clearly.....the borders are shut to ALL Foreigners. Full stop period and not for just a few weeks. He says 6 months!!!"

I don't think that Dr. Fauci makes rules as he is only an advisor.

Goggle .... US travel ban or Canada border closed ...  I was supposed to be in the US early July...flights cancelled. The only flights from Europe to US are repatriation flights for US Citizens etc. No business trips or tourists allowed till further notice. It is all very frustrating.

Don,

That is the exact same article that I was referring to and if you delve into the details it is that same proclamation that President Trump made in January and became effective in March.  At the bottom it says "reviewed June 15."  I see no other date attached so it may still be in effect.  But no mention of when it will be lifted nor any mention or that it will be extended for 6 months.

As for travel between the U.S. and Canada, all non-essential cross border travel is banned until June 21st but will likely be extended until late July.  However, some people are allowed to enter the U.S. by air, subject to the 14 day quarantine, I believe. From the N.Y. Times on June 12th "The border closing has been extended several times since it took effect March 21 and is now set to expire, or get extended, on June 21.."

I have googled as you suggested and can find no U.S. announcement that the border closure will be extended for another 6 months as you have claimed.  Please post the link to the article that you have mentioned so we can see it.

We are keeping our fingers crossed because our daughter has reservations to visit us here in Nova Scotia in August and we generally travel to Colorado, and I onto "World of Speed" in September.

It has been reported here in the U.K. in virtually every newspaper. Fauci did an interview with The Daily Telegraph?. But I stress currently the borders are closed to certainly All European states. There are no flights. Please check USA Today. Announced today both North and South Borders closed until at least 21 July.

Not to head off on a tangent but I have a question. My state, Pa. has three colors, red, yellow, and green. Some states had numbers. There was written criteria to go from red, stay at home, to yellow, 25 in a group, and then green. 250 in a group still with masks, etc. . I have not seen any criteria to go from green to normal. Do any of the states have this criteria?? When will we be normal again?

I am still keeping an eye on our flights from the UK to Vegas. Something tells me they might start flying even with no passengers. That way the airline still gets paid ( from all of the flights booked before this crap started) but they don't even have to lay on all of that luxurious food as there will be no more than about 10 passengers. We booked our flights way back in early December.
Good luck everyone. Keep safe, keep building, keep the dream alive.

If there are flights; is the US applying quarantine to inbound visitors? I ask only because I was looking to go to NZ as I am currently sans work and have a UK and NZ passport so thought I could sneak in for a family visit - a 14 day quarantine applies in NZ though the airlines don't mention it and apparently its been a bit shaky in terms of enforcement which is why, after weeks of no new cases, NZ has people testing positive again.

When will we be normal again?

I think 'normal' is when the annual flu jab includes 2019-nCoV and there is an uptake of at least 50% (seems there is still debate re the R0 of this virus so the classic formula for the herd immunity threshold of 1?1/R0 gives differing opinions for the minimum population that needs to be vaccinated). For comparison measles requires an 83 - 94% uptake for herd immunity (highly contagious, R0 of 12 - 18).

Remember H1N1 (the swine flu pandemic ca. 2009) - that is in the annual flu jab so it isn't talked about anymore. That virus probably came from wet meat markets too!

Technically a vaccine was developed for the first SARS outbreak (2002 iirc) but for some reason I don't think it ever went into production - whether it was a fail or whether that iteration of SARS just didn't re-emerge diminishing the commercial viability I don't know. An Oxford research team where involved in a SARS vaccine so they were saying they have a jump on this virus but I haven't heard much from them in the media lately....
Given the gazillions of $ being thrown at vaccine research via many different routes (pharma, coalition funding, philanthropy etc.) for this sucker we have to hope that one or more lead candidates are identified soon, proven to provide protection, and distributed as open source for production facilities around the world to ramp up.

Everywhere that has relaxed social distancing seems to be seeing flareups; target is to keep R0 below 1 - essentially a physical rather than biochemical form of herd immunity: stay apart, don't transmit it.

I reckon doing a couple of hundred mph at the quarter would satisfy social distancing; I wish I could be there this year

John,
There are BA flights going to and from the USA at the moment, but they are not carrying passengers.
I have a friend who is a senior captain with BA and he is flying to LV this weekend. Last month it was LA.

They have most of the seats removed to allow for small freight, but still keep the 1st class seats in.

Tourists from the U.K. cannot fly to the US currently.. All Virgin flights cancelled up to 5th August. (My crews flights cancelled this week). Now transferred to BA and Los Angeles. Now we wait for the airports to accept U.K. travellers.
