Title: Classic Fuel Injection
Post by: RICK on March 01, 2020, 09:20:31 AM
So my drinking buddies are trying to tell me that we can put a late model Chevy LS with factory fuel injection in a 1928 coupe and run it in /CGALT, as long as we use the (OEM) original GM computer for the year of engine?  But the way i'm reading it, , , EFI is  tied to the body year?  So who's right?

The current rule book (pages 85-86) specifically permits using non-vintage engines in the Classic Category, and also permits the use of OEM EFI.  So, it looks like your buddies got it right.   You just can't use aftermarket EFI, e.g. Hilborn, etc.   It's a different story for Vintage Category coupes and sedans, though.

I wonder how Dan Warner will be able to ascertain that the computer is stock/unmodified.   muutt

So is it Dan Warner, that will make the determination on this?  My 2019 rule book clearly states the rule on ignition, , , ie, "(one ignition system only) and OEM EFI." Then it goes on to read,  "Sensor-controlled ignitions
are allow but shall be stock and not modified in any way for"  now turn to page 86, "the year and model of the vehicle entered."          YEAR AND MODEL ENTERED?        So I'm Still uncertain.

My guess... it is trying to tell you that the new LS family are not allowed because they have sensor controlled engine management systems... but if you have a 350 or 351 that had early EFI then you are good...
But ya know none of this matters... because we are all guessing.... contact Jack Masson... number and email in that book you are reading... he is the Classic chair for the SCTA determination... get it in writing and put it in your book....
Oh, be sure to let us know what the ruling was by adding it to this thread

Guess I should cancel my order for a stock computer-equipped 2020 526hp Shelby GT350 engine.   :dhorse:

When the class was proposed, the rule was going to be "No EFI" At that time I said "What if someone want's to use a Buick V6 with factory EFI?" Which was about the only performance engine with EFI at that time. So the rule became as you see it. Factory EFI for the engine. I don't know if anybody ever brought it up again.

This issue was brought up to and settled by the coupe and sedan committee a couple years ago. The EFI is tied to the chassis being used, not the engine swap.

OK,  I get it now. Classic is for 1928 to 1981 cars. If your 1981 had EFI you can put that on your Chevy 350 or Ford 351 engine. It was my fault, , , I failed to turn the page on my 2019 rulebook.  "the year and model of the vehicle entered". So NO computers that change the way the engine runs on its way down the course.
