Title: Dorian
Post by: jacksoni on September 02, 2019, 09:15:01 AM
Just before Speedweek my entire family and I spent a week in Hopetown, Elbow Key, the Bahamas. My wife's nephew had (not going to say has) a house there. This was the first landfall of the storm and the eye went directly over the island. 185 sustained and gusts to 220, 23ft storm surge. He spent the night with a neighbor in a concrete house. No actual word yet but word out of Hopetown so far is only one death. It is a disaster comparable to Andrew or Katrina or Maria though of course very small islands. They are devastated. More to come as the storm is just sitting on Grand Bahama and is of course threatening continental US.

We have a mandatory evac beginning noon today... not our first, probably not our last... and the worst part always - and I realize this is specific to material things, which is far different than personal safety - is deciding which possessions and mementos to bring with us and which to leave behind not knowing if any of it will be here when we return home.  At least we'll be safe in a locale other than home.

We live in Central Florida and doing all of the typical preparation for these events. It appears we may dodge this particular bullet and hope it continues to turn eastward and miss the US mainland all together. Our thoughts are on the people in the Bahamas' who are dealing with it now. My main concern is always for the less fortunate who can't afford to leave or have access to proper shelter for this type of storm system. They are the true victims.

Just got a text. Our nephew is OK> His house is gone.....
Best wishes for your safety guys in harms way. I think we, in Maryland, likely won't get much but still up in the air.

Jack,  Sorry for the property losses.   Glad your nephew is OK.    Hope he can recover to again live in the Bahamas.

Hoping everyone in the storm's path can find safety.

I contacted my friend and engine builder, Ted Wenz, who lives and has his business, Savannah Race Engineering in, Savannah, GA. He is under a mandatory evacuation but Ted, the intrepid soul that he is, is staying put. Keep Savannah, in your thoughts and hope Dorian does not hit hard there.
