Title: Forum rebuild beginning 3 June '19
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on May 15, 2019, 09:48:20 AM
Here's a note that Bob Clancy just sent.  Please be ready for stuff to be funky and also be ready to let us know if you're having issues.

Bob said:  "Thinking, Forum rebuild starting 6/3.  All the prep work the week before.  I plan on hanging around all the week of the 3rd, for glitches, and to find and re-install add-ons.  Right now, I don't know what people like or use.

Major job, gotta take extreme care and make everything redundant/reversible as much as possible."

Hold on tight!

Hopefully, it won't be a whole lot different.  Will go down that Monday, backed up, then restored to the new software (same stuff but the latest version).  That shouldn't take all that long, figure a day.  We'll see.

Bob also told me:

"Be warned it's gonna take some time/hours/$.  No cuttin' corners."

Be prepared to NOT try and send notes to him or me saying that the danged thing is broken. We'll know it!

You have this old Hot Rod you've been driving forever, the key is on the dash, the starter button is right next to it, there are enough gauges & a few switches to make $hit work. Then somebody says, you need to up-date your system!
So after all the new whizbangery is done you park your old bones in the same comfy old seat & .......WTF!! :?
There's this "thing" from another time & dimension looking at you & now you need to learn a new language to start that old Hot Rod. So you decide to call Wiz for some help but it goes straight to voicemail. Well, I'll send him a text message rather that wait for all that intro BS that we don't need to listen to every time cuz nobody checks their voicemail. Then you hit send & the fire sprinkler in the garage goes off & the windshield wipers start working automatically & the headlights come on & you're thinking, I gotta get outa here but there's no door handle any more & what the f..k happened to the window winder! Being old skool you're packing a Leatherman titanium so you whip it out & go for the gnarly wood saw thing & jam it in the side of the window. It shatters but the stick-on tint is keeping it together so you beat it to death with your elbow then realize you can't fit through there because it's a 5 window with a 4" chop!
Right then your 5 year old granddaughter comes out of the house with a smart phone surgically attached to her left hand & shuts everything off then say's "what r ya dooin?"
Progress, if it ain't broke don't fix it!
  Sid.

Love the analogy!  That's the way I feel about new cars, my CRX is a '91, truck a '74, tractor a '48.  I feel like that about software too, and use ancient versions to do my work.

Problem is.... the forum relies on PHP, which gets 'upgraded' and older versions get unsupported, and eventually removed from the server.  Out of our control. This upgrade is totally driven by that.  The host (1and1) is currently supporting the older PHP versions... for a cost, and for a while.  Eventually, they'll go away, then the Forum would die a horrible death.  So this is a gotta-do-it thing.  Like something is going south on your car, and you know it, and have warning.... do you fixum now?  Or wait until something really gets destroyed?    :-o

My business has a tech support forum using SMF and we are going through exactly the same thing right now. In fact we had a crash yesterday from an auto update that didn't like our out of date forum version. I can say from experience that Bob and Jon are not doing this just to Plymouth you guys off. You would be way more pissed off if they didn't update!

If you received as many notes, emails, texts and calls as I do when the site/Forum gets farkled -- you'd post a note well in advance and keep talking about it so everyone knows.

This method oughta reduce the number of those contacts by at least 10%.

Didja ever wonder about the high-tech discussions that Bob Clancy sends my way about thewebsiteand Forum maintenance?  Here's one he sent yesterday about the upcoming re-do:

"Yo,

Spent all frikkin day yesterday getting *my* shit in order, upgraded the MRider forum (exactly the same as LR except teeny) and figured out what works.  My original plan, I found out, wouldn't work. (Do a new install of the latest version, then import the old database..... have to do an in-place 'upgrade' instead, as it modifies the database too). VERY thankful for that MRider forum.  Also upgraded my gallery (Coppermine, same as LR).  Now I'm all off the "extended PHP support".

Have a good plan, ready for Monday.  Going to duplicate the forum then upgrade that version, leaving the original intact.  If it's all well and good, then blow away the original, after all the boys and girls check it over.

Onward,
B

Well, we're baaaaack..... but not done.  After a zillion tries and fails, it looks like the bottom line is the database is too big for the host.

So I'm going to scratch my head a bit and figure some way around it.  I'm thinking next Monday morning, I should be ready to try again.  Probably break it apart into Current Topics and Archives... like Speedweek 2013 isn't getting a lot of activity. :-D

Thank you all for your patience, and it'll be up for Stupid Joke Friday!

It sounds like most major projects, once you get into them there are lots of stumbling blocks along the way. The only way you find them is to start working at it.

Thanks for approaching it such that you could bail and take another approach without sacrificing what was already there. I'm sure you have a much better idea of what's required to make the conversion a success.

We appreciate the effort to ensure the integrity of the site and keep it moving forward. Thanks Bob C.

Pete,

I really liked a KLR Kawasaki motorcycle forum, I think the guy hosted it at home.  Anyway, the server died, and the backup was corrupt.  The whole thing died.  Totally.

So, I'm really really careful about this!   :-o

Not NMSU, but UNM.That was in the early to mid 80's.  Finally graduated at the tender age of 40.  Before that, it was Montana, Michigan, and Utah.  Turns out, both Jon Wennerberg (Seldom Seen Slim) and I went to Michigan Tech a couple years apart.

Well, this sucks.  After spending a big chunk of 8 days working on it, fixing one problem, getting a little further in the "upgrade", running into another..... I find that some forums can't be successfully upgraded on some servers.  It has to be rebuilt locally, then the whole upgraded thing uploaded.  I can't do it, and am looking into help from someone who can.  No details yet, and the pain ain't over!    :dhorse:

Many thanks to everybody for your patience.  I had to keep it shut down so when I was upgrading the database (trying to) folks wouldn't be adding to the old version, and lose their stuff.

So... thanks again!

I cleared my cache, and can still see 'em..... BUT looking at the 'attachments' directory, I do a 'save as' to get the file name, and can't find it.  avatar_753.png for Peter Jack.  Maybe it has one of the encrypted names?

Also, logged out and came in as a Guest... still could see them.

WAIT!  Krash got 51827.png as a filename.... there is an encrypted filename that starts with that:
51827_4eea9.... etc etc.  Downloading it, that's the avatar.  So it IS on the server.
Title: Re: Forum rebuild beginning 3 June '19
Post by: Krash on June 17, 2019, 10:02:15 PM
File names are hashed for security reasons, yours is 58934_3d17fa28b42bb0b74da5396795e33d7c913c983b.  If you change it to 58934.png you can view it as a normal image file, that's how I posted it.  IIRC there was a database change around 2.0.6 (officially, there were none in 2.0 branch), something to do with mime_type in smf_attachments.  I'll try something .......

Can't get into pma at ionos, nothing I can do til it comes back up.

Title: Re: Forum rebuild beginning 3 June '19
Post by: Krash on June 17, 2019, 10:16:58 PM
Crap, it's what I thought it was.  mime_type is blank for some attachments, that causes them to not display.  Just fixed yours by manually editing the field (I see it now).  Should be able to fix it by running mysql queries, but a little leery tinkering with your production db.  Can you do a quick backup via SSH?

You can see them because it only happens in IE (I think), you must be using different browser.  I see the missing avatars in FF.

I see all avatars in IE, clear browser cache and do a hard refresh.

While we're here, noticed some annoying things about how user options are configured, I believe they're default settings in 2.0, and really shouldn't be:

- Returns to message index after post, should return to topic.
- PMs are shown all, should be displayed as conversation, most recent on top.
- Sent PMs are not saved by default, they should be.

These are Profile options, but most users don't know (or care) that they're there.  They can be set for all members in Admin -> Current Theme -> Member Options.  These are my personal preferences, I use them on my production forums to make life easier for my members.

You have to make the changes in two places to make them effective for all members -

- Configure guest and new user options for this theme (15 options currently set.)
- Change current options for all members using this theme

used to show ages and a person's 'title' too.

That's two different things, believe age was displayed by a mod, I have a list somewhere..............

Yeah, it was - Display Age and Location next to posts 1.0 (https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=638), last updated to 1.1.3 twelve years ago.  Don't think there's a 2.0 mod that does that.  Might not be too difficult to custom code it.

Not sure which title you're referring to, you should see membergroup (Admin) and post count group (New Folks).  What else was there?

You should also enable Quick Reply in member options, I use it all the time.

Sigs should have carried over from 1.1.21.  There's also personal text, it displays below avatar, it's enabled, and  I've enabled custom titles, members need permission to use that.

Going offline shortly, be back on sometime tomorrow afternoon.  Make a list of anything you need or doesn't work right.  I have this topic on notify, or you can post at thekrashsite.

Jacksoni,

Well, it was set to Azerbistan or some such (for real, the default).

Click on Profile
That will bring up a summary.

There should be a menu iten that says "Modify Profile".  That will give a dropdown that has a "Look and Layout" option.  Take that.

There's a Time Offset.  The forum time is set to Chicago.  My 'auto detect' worked right and gave me "-1" for Mt. Time.

That should do it.

BtWE

Update:  Mt. Time should be "-1", right?  Well, I was an hour off, had to set it to 0.  Daylight savings, I bet.

If you click on unread posts link in your user panel (top left), it takes you to message index, which displays all topics with new posts.  Click on topic title, goes to first post in topic.  Click on last post widget (http://www.landracing.com/forum/Themes/default/images/icons/last_post.gif) (far right), takes you to last post in topic.

Bob, I've created a second attachments directory (/attachments2) and made it active, all new attachments will go there.  You can backup /attachments, then not have to do it again, no new files will be added.  It's not a good idea to have 55,000 files in one directory, makes it difficult to do backups, and also can cause problems with file management.  FileZilla and Ionos file manager both list 55,300 files in /attachments, while admin attachment settings and PMA show 57,184, that's the actual number of rows in smf_attachments.  55,300 is probably the limit for your ftp server (it's more commonly 9,998), it's a configuration parameter on the server and can be changed by host.  The files are all there, you just can't see the remaining 2,000 or do anything with them.

Also restored your custom registration agreement from 1.1.21 install.

Guys,  I am amazed at what all you had to do to upgrade this  forum.  I am the administrator for a relatively small forum and we are having a heck  of a time upgrading  our platform (phpbb).

It appears that Tapatalk is broken - at least on my phone.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Tapatalk has not been installed on new forum.  I strongly advise against it, it's caused serious security problems for SMF forums, and was removed from the SMF mod site some time ago because it failed to comply with coding guidelines.  I've suggested installing a responsive theme, they're designed to adapt forum view to mobile devices, and there are quite a few available for 2.0.  You can look thru them here (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=search;basic_search=responsive), maybe have a poll to select one that everyone likes.  There's also a responsive mod for default Curve theme (what you're currently seeing here), but I don't especially like it :-P.

Really sad about Tapatalk.  That app was absolutely great to getting all of the unread posts for all the forums.  Kind of a quick one stop shopping app.

I did some research and see why you do not want to install the app.

I hope you can find a way to make it easy for us to see all the unread posts from all the forums on one screen.

There are two links below username at top of forum when you're logged in, 'Show unread posts since last visit.' and 'Show new replies to your posts.', you should see them when viewing forum on a phone.  Does either do what you want?

Trying a new one now.....

Looks good, there were a couple days in crossing over from the old forum to the new one.  And the attachment directory was over-full, so they're going to a new place now.   I can poke around in the database and *maybe* figure out what happened and fix it without messing things up, but probably the best thing is for the poster to just put them up again.

Pete, on my Apple (all of 'em, for that matter) you can change the magnification of the screen to your preference by:

Press command plus the + button to step larger, and Command plus the - button to shrink.  Mine's set to 120% for these cataract surgery-limited close focus eyes.

I assume Wintel machines have a similar ability.

Flash is eol, Adobe finally dropped it due to persistent security issues that they couldn't fix.  Some browsers still see it by default (IE11), most do not.  Some just ignore it (FF67), some display an error message or broken image.  It can be manually enabled in some browsers, or viewed with a plugin, but it's best not to use Flash, especially for ads, because you don't know who, if anyone, can see them.

It's me with the old weldor's eyes again. They're way smaller and more orange than they used to be and the one with all the question marks around the top of the emoji is missing. They all used to be the same color and size as the two with the mugs of beer.

Looks like there were only two smiley sets on old forum, they're both the same, and they're smaller and darker than the set you've been using since forum was upgraded.  Also seems that smiley selection option is not working correctly.  I'll tinker with it a bit.

This might not be related to the update:
When I receive a new private message I read it- and usually send a reply. But I continue to get a pop-up window saying I have a new message. After logging out and back in the pop-up message is gone- usually.

I found the same thing Jack.

I'd also like to see the emojis changed so they're all like beating the dead horse and the toasting with beer mugs. I find the new orange ones much harder to see.
