Title: Who’s still in the chute business
Post by: n49racer on April 02, 2019, 08:03:40 PM
So after a fire hurt both chutes on the car last year I sent them back to Ben at Deist for inspection and repair/replacement. That was over 3 months ago. I try to call every week and get the same story. They haven’t been looked at and Ben cannot tell me when as they only have 1 person doing chutes. After reading of the go fund me request for help from Deist I’m getting the sinking feeling that I’m out of luck.

I’m pretty sure non of the other manufacturers will touch anyone’s product but their own. SO. It looks like I’m buying 2 new chutes.

Can I get some feedback on chute makers for LSR

Thanks
Ted

I bought my 'chute from Stroud. Talk to Bob Stroud to get his recommendation for your application.

I've dealt with Bob Stroud over the years.  He's no nonsense.  He's opinionated.  He knows what he's talking about.  And if it doesn't work exactly like you think it should, he'll fix it.

Looking forward to hearing an answer also.  When I was building the liner I was having trouble getting call backs since I really wanted to talk to someone and have my chutes specifically designed for my application.  After having really bad luck and beginning to run out of time, I finally called Stroud.  Took several calls as Mr. Stroud is not there daily from my understanding, and he is the only one there that sizes Bville chutes.  When I finally got a hold of him, he spent the bulk of our conversation bad mouthing his competition and then promised I would hear from him in a couple of days with recomendations for me.  After a lot of phone calls and never actually talking to him again I gave up on Stroud for chutes.  It worries me that DJ may be in trouble and the last several chutes I have received have only lasted two or three runs each,  all specifically designed for Bville El Mirage for my car.  So I may be in trouble and in need of chutes also.. At El Mirage I shredded both chutes at 292 and had to work hard to get the car stopped.

For my communication with DJ to date I have worked with a UK guy who is based at the Santa Pod dragstrip and specialises in extinguishers / fills etc. He is a rep for DJ here and on the advise of this site I got my harnesses very early in the Lakester build  - glad I did as I would have made packaging mistakes without them.  It was from DJ imported by Martin.

My chute was sized by DJ a while back (again packaging plans well in advance of purchase) but when I read a while ago about the crowd funding at DJ I rang Martin in the UK and he assured me that it was an odd situation and a one off - no worries.

I have an open question with him regarding extinguisher cables (push to burst) via DJ and I realise I have heard nothing for weeks.

I too will be interested to hear if there is an alternative or if DJ resolves.

How about Autopower in San Diego! I'm not totally up to speed but Rick White, son of Nolan white is still running Autopower as far as I know & they were building chutes. Rick basically grew up on the salt & still runs Nostalgia Top Fuel & I recently saw a #131 blue roadster at B-ville that has to be connected.

"...I recently saw a #131 blue roadster..."

Nope, in that it's a Comp Coupe, but yep in that it's the White legacy.

Stroud is a old guy like the rest of old guys  ---cranky and forgetful --- but I would bet big money you will not hurt one of his chutes as fast as you are wanting to go--I would for sure STOP with BOB  STROUD

While I didn't order a chute, I did order a cage net from Stroud.  I have found that there are those at Stroud other than Bob who know what they're talking about.

The inclination of all of us is to talk to the "old man", but sometimes the service is better handled by the minions.

Close! Comp coupe is a mod roadster without a haircut. :-D

I would rather deal with minions being one myself but was told that ONLY Bob could do Bville chutes.  He was supposed to be training someone, maybe that has happened.  Happy with DJ for the most part just frustrated at times

I received a call from Ben at Deist ( the day after the post🤔) the chutes should be ready next week. Interesting Eddy. The reason I have Deist chutes is exactly the same reason you have them. Anyone else find it odd that there doesn’t seem to be SFI info on chutes?  I guess we should be happy as it would probably quadruple the price!!

Bob Stroud and Rick White both know the safety game cold. Both sell you what you need, not necessarily what you want. Good for them.

Just to complete my dialogue on dealing with DJ remotely.
Martin (UK distributor) reckons they have had a lot of 'retirements' recently and may not have invested early enough in training people to make stuff so they are short handed.  He has experienced long delays but things are still getting made by the experienced hands.

I may change my harness as a result - I needed it to set things up (invaluable advice as always from youse guys); Cinched up it seriously altered my arm reach and therefore steering wheel location. The lower hip adjusters are right on the bone so I was going to get those altered but maybe I will wait and get something from scratch to spec (now I know what spec is) closer to the time. Maybe DJ will be in full swing again by then.
