Here's an unpublished car cam video of the Turbinator from WOS 2018. Once we got our backup run done on the 482 run, the engine got turned up to 108%. (We are still working on the traction control.) It was a little too aggressive and Dave had his hands full. Pay close attention after the 35 second mark on the video. Watch the horizon too. The number in the bottom right is wheel spin in % of actual speed. He aborted at about the 1.5 while sideways and on two wheels, in the mid 300MPH range, with 25% wheel slip (~100MPH slip). Tire surface temps his 375, and we burned all the rubber off all 4 tires. The data from that run was used to fine tune the software, which in turn resulted in great performance at the Finals. Thanks to Ken Braccio from Advanced Turbine Services, and his competent engineers Eldon, and Jeremy, the turbine magicians behind the curtain.

whoops!
-
What is used as a reference speed when calculating wheel spin?
-
We have two separate GPS systems, one is Mil spec and if I'm not mistaken runs at 50 Hz. The two are used to determine vehicle speed, and that is compared with driveshaft speed. A math channel takes care of the heavy lifting.
Hope this helps.

Data acquisition is priceless.
Great driving ranks right up there too...

I adore ALL these guys to just jump back in after they went through scary moments during a pass (counting the events this year).
David Spangler went even faster after that and eventually hit 503mph exit speed, Danny Thompson set his AA/BFS record,
the driver of the Dauernheim Bigelow Lakester had a very scary moment during Speed Week and went out again... RESPECT.

Hey Stick... looks like you are close to Pork Pie, you should look him up to talk about Salt Flats racing....
And Congrats to Rick, Dave and crew... what a year

wouldn't that be a "HELLO moment" :-D
-
More like a "OHELLNO" moment

I would say that it was one of those situations at the time, that experience/reflexes delt with, in hindsight, the comment as always " I didn't think it was as bad as that" :-)

HEY Pork Pie!! Where have you been?
Haven't seen you out there in a while. Folks were asking about you this year.

It appears that he only went up on two wheels once. But Dave said it felt like 2 or 3 times. The camera shake and body flex could have hidden it. If you watch closely starting around the 35 second mark, focusing on the G meter and the horizon, you can see that there were some periods where the side load (G's) exceeded that which resulted in the final slide and tilting of the horizon. If he wasn't on two wheels, he was at least off the rubber.

Thats where all the years of racing / driving come in to play, And why Rick puts a 70+ yr old behind the wheel !
Spangler, Thompson, Vesco, Yeager (As in Test Pilot Bad Ass Chuck Yeager, There all the same !)

Unfortunately, a private issue kept me away from the salt since WoS 2017 and the whole 2018 season. Was tough to be home in Germany and waiting to read something on Landracing.com...
and what I read finally it makes it tougher.....
I will be back in 2019.... :-D

Yikes, that puts my cojones in my throat, WTFG Dave Spangler and tuning crew. Reminds me of Andy Green at full steering lock going ludicrous speed without lifting.
