Title: Freud
Post by: Lilhigbee on January 02, 2018, 06:15:35 PM
Marlo just informed me that Freud had a stroke some time last night.  He is currently in the hospital with one side not functioning and unable to speak.  I'll update this as I learn anything.

I do not know Freud and am not a racer. I wish him the best in a complete recovery. I come here to learn about LSR but I do know something about strokes as I had one in Aug. 2013. Everyone's symptoms are different. If you EVER THINK you are having a stroke get to a hospital. There is a drug called TPA that can reverse the effects of a stroke BUT it must be administered within 3 hours of the first symptom. I feel I would be in a wheelchair if a young Dr. had not diagnosed me properly. I could not open my eyes without throwing up, I was that dizzy. Couldn't walk either and it happened instantly. I was in ICU for four days. TPA thins the blood drastically and dissolves the clot. On the forth day I was able to walk out of the hospital. It turns out mine was caused by a bruise on my leg. I have absolutely no after effects from either the stroke or drug. Take Freud's situation as a warning, we are all getting older. If you THINK it's a possibility get to a hospital. Again, best thoughts for Freud.

Word from Charlie Markley this am is Freud is talking & will start PT soon.

The LeFevers Family wish him a speedy recovery. Besides who's going to do Marlo's PR in Australia if he doesn't get back in the saddle.  :-o He's very much needed.

I reread what I wrote & it didn't come out sounding like I meant it. Hope this is better.

If there was ever a finer man to be a spokesman, give encouragement or help You out on the Salt Flats, I have never met He, She, or Them.
If God is listening I sure hope He knows how much He means to all of us.  I am far from religious but right now I am praying for Glenn, Dorris and the entire Freudenberger family.                                                                                            Bob Drury

Taken from Freud's Facebook page....

Hi everyone,

This is Rose Freeman, Freud's granddaughter. Thank you all so much for sending your love and prayers <3 <3 You're welcome to comment on this post and I'll read your notes to him!

Freud had a stroke yesterday at his physical therapy appointment. He had a tear in the carotid artery. They took him to the Swedish hospital emergency in Edmonds, Washington. He had several tests done yesterday (cat scan and echo-cartiogram) and was stable. When I visited him, he immediately recognized me and asked if I brought my kitty Kailey to sit on his lap. Then, he asked me if I took pictures of the supermoon the night before. He was moved from the Emergency room and joked about riding backwards and doing donuts down the hallway in his hospital over to the third floor. As the day went on, he continued to carry short conversations with people and he recognized that he had a stroke.

The left side of his face looks much better today and he is resting. Doris is in good spirits and is grateful for your kind words. He will have an MRI this afternoon. The next couple days will determine a lot about his recovery. As I know more I will keep updating you on his account here. Please feel free to share this post. <3

Much love,
Rose Freeman

From Glenn's Facebook page - January 7th - as documented by Rose -

"My doctor says that in order to recover from a stroke you have to be stubborn." -Freud

Last night Freud partied late visiting with his son Gary Freud. This afternoon Glenn is awake, telling stories with Nick Genet, and scheming about how to update about Target 550 next.

Freud:"Did you have any regrets about letting me ride your bike?"

Nick Genet: "No regrets. Actually, one. The only regret I have about you riding my bike is that we hadn't done it sooner, so that we could have done it for more years. But, at the end of the day, we did it."

Thank you for the messages and prayers, it means so much to have your support.

In case you missed my update yesterday, he is out of the hospital and now at Genesis in Everett, Washington. His doctor yesterday reviewed his charts and was surprised with Freud's general appearance and improvement since Wednesday. He still has no movement to his left side but can speak well. He enjoys your messages and visits!

Much love,
Rose Freeman

To which, all I can add is . . .

For me that link only brings me to like a homepage that shows Glenn's picture and his likes. Does not let me get into his posts, and says I have to login. I tried the not now and it still rejects me.

I can view the SCTA Facebook page if I say not now, so I guess different accounts are set up differently for non registered Facebook viewing.

This is from Feb 4th.

Good morning friends ❤️❤️

This is Rose Freeman, Glenn’s granddaughter. Thank you all so much again for your thoughts, prayers, and notes. I wanted to give you an update on my grandpa as he is such a dear person to so many people. I wish I had time to call every one of you personally, but a post will have to do.

A few days ago, we saw some great progress and healing in his brain. He picked up a spoon on Friday and fed himself. He picked up a cup of water, too! This was sweet to see him start to do things on his own. Along with the good days, he has bad days. He goes from alert and awake at meals, to a deep sleep where nobody can wake him up. This is part of the healing process, but yesterday morning something just wasn’t right.

We had another urine sample done and found he has another UTI (he had one a couple weeks ago) and pneumonia as of yesterday. He’s not doing well right now. If you’re the kind of praying person, or even if you’re not, please pray for Glenn. Pray for healing through these antibiotics, pray for comfort for him right now. Please pray for my grandma Doris to know she is not alone. Personally, I’m praying that my grandpa knows how loved he is by all of us and most importantly, by God.

If you’d like to come by to see him, please feel free to contact me preferably by a text (call is ok, I’ll just get back to you faster by text) at 425 248 9288. Also, you can leave a message for him in the comments below or tag him in a post and I’ll read it to him.

To my grandpa’s dear friends at Bonneville, you are family. Please know I’d love to hear from you.

Much love ❤️❤️

-Rose Freeman

I'll never argue with the healing power a pet can bring to the table.

When you're stuck in bed, a warm, fuzzy cat, willing to just be there and be petted - there's a therapeutic value in that well beyond the powers of modern medicine.

Glenn - one day at a time, my friend.

Hello friends 💕

This is Rose Freeman, Freud’s granddaughter. My PaPa and I were looking at pictures of the Girls tonight and this [old picture of Glenn's cats - 4bM] showed up in his Facebook memories from a few years ago! I wanted to share it again.

He is still here at the Everett Genesis rehab facility and we’re beginning the process to transition him to a smaller adult family home in the near future. His short term memory has improved lately and he’s enjoyed visits with family and friends. Thank you for your thoughts and notes! Freud loves hearing from all of you!

This is Rose's reply to the same query by John Noonan yesterday Glen.

"I’ll do an update soon John J Noonan! He is very much the same - not able to walk, feed himself, get out of bed alone. He is in good spirits most of the time and loves company. His mind is as sharp as ever and he remembers so many stories to tell. He is still at the rehab facility but we hope to have him moved to a long term care home in the next couple weeks. Thank you for asking, I’ll update more often even if it’s the same thing."

Had a nice talk with Freud's son today. His condition is still pretty bad. Has to depend on a lot of help for everything. Doris has a lot of help at the house to take care of her. Please say a prayer for both of them and a full recovery for Glenn. This is very hard for him. He does have some better days and can talk but the phone is a little difficult for him.  we say a prayer for him daily. Sure miss what he does for LSR   and his great photos.

We're all newbies at some point, and to a newbie, Bonneville can be an intimidating place.
Glenn, through his openness, humor and generosity of spirit, removed for Kate and me much of that intimidation and revealed to us the family I'm still learning to love and appreciate.

He and I were so looking forward to one of the yearly "guided tours" of central Nevada.  I haven't made it the last couple of years without missing him and hoping it could happen.  I guess not.  But I can't think of the salt without thinking of him then, too.  He was such a delight, such a friend, such a crack-up with tales of old.

From Freud's intro on this site...2008
My sign on name is FREUD. I use that because Ed Roth assigned my nick name (Doc Freud) in 1968. With a last name of Freudenberger and a degree in Optometry, it covered all the bases. I live in Everett, WA. My first trip to B'ville was 3 months after I graduated from college in 1963. ('lotta good guys had '63 as their first trip)
I was shooting fotos at the drag races and it took me a few years before the camera interrupted my spectating experiences on the salt. The foto on the cover of CYCLE Magazine (December 1969) opened a new world for me. For a few years I printed fotos in my room at the Wendover Best Western Hotel. I have people tell me that the fotos from 1975 are still on the wall at home or in the shop. Reality slapped me in the face several years ago when a fellow told me he remembered me from his early trips to the salt when he was a young kid. The clincher was when he concluded with the statement, "Now you're one of the Old Timers." I guess that was what was required to be the most recent inductee in the Kilo Club.
2008 will include my 118th trip to the salt. Private time, WOS, World Finals  and Speed Week have had years with 5-6 trips.
Then in the 80's I went nuts and rode a TZ 750 to capture the spirit of the racer. My tough teacher was Don Vesco and I treasure the time we had together.
When I add a slight bit to my learning curve, I will post the building diary on Marlo Treit's website (www.target550.com) and keep everyone up to date on his streamliner build.
For the past 8 years I have done the foto diary of the Gas Up event for the Gold Coast Roadster and Racing Club. That has given me the opportunity to be in a "one on one" situation with the heros of LSR.  So I have enjoyed a closeness with a marvelous group of talented people. For that I am most grateful.
With the help of a few dear friends, I put on the B'ville NW Reunion each year. This site is my closest link to the racers and so it is with great dedication  that I will do all possible to help Jon and Keilani keep it afloat.

Aging ugly,
FREUD

He was a man of great humor and occasionally great backwards driving.
This should be a celebration of his life
My favorite story... well OK one of....
My grandson Trey (as in uno, dos) was about 14 when he got to know Freud... that year we were racing a bike, my oldest, his dad was riding.  He forgot his camera in town, we were in line and he wanted to go back to the motel and get it.  Freud to the rescue... he said lets go.... when they got to Freud's car he said get in, you're  driving.  Trey was going about 30, mostly because he had only driven a little in the country with his mom and dad.... Freud said com'on step on it, we gotta get back before they run... at 70 he said stop lolly gagging... at 100 he said there was more left.  When they got to the pavement, Freud took the wheel... when they got back on the salt, Trey back at the wheel, floored it and slowed only when they passed the pits (on the mountain side) and got near the 4.  Trey got a "dads the black dot in the photo" pic of his father going by at 200.
Trey still talks about his rental car racing with Freud ... his first time to 100MPH ... and how cool the Old Guy was

Don & Gus, thanks for that great picture.

Stainless,

there are so many great moments and fun I shared with Doc....tough to pick a highlight....
Doc and I not only shared the passion for speed and the salt flats, but also, and that makes it real special....

we shared the passion for framing the moments at the salt with our camera.......the racers....the people behind our dreams at the salt.....and creating memories for our
speed community.....

so the friendship between Doc and me was in a very special way.....because we both shared the view out of our eye through the viewfinder to capture the moment and freeze them in a picture.....

telling stories with a picture - how I can explain - Doc and I, we could communicate this way......

Thanks, Doc, for all this wonderful memories

I saw this earlier today on Facebook.

What makes a man a great man? It's not wealth or fame. It's not things accumulated over a life time. What makes a man a great man is how many people's live he touched in a positive way while on this earth. Freud was truly a great man. A life well lived.

I first met Glenn in Smith's Food's parking lot on the Friday before the 50th Speedweek began.  He was hauling beer and Ice and I on the other hand was laying in the oily parking lot changing a piece of sh*t plastic three way fuel valve that was dripping gas onto the exhaust pipe of My tow rig with my trailer and brand new race car hooked to the rear.
As He neared My feet He say's to Me... "You know your not supposed to work on your sh*t till You hit the Salt Flats".  I had not slept in two days and had left Portland, Oregon sixteen hours earlier, didn't know this guy from Jack Shitt but was too tired to tell him to kiss my a*s so instead We became friend's from that day to this day, some 21 years later.
Glenn was a wonderful human being.  He could charm the pants off of (ahem) Men, Women, Cat's, Dog's, Race Official's, Cop's, and God know's who else.  He would have made a great politician, professional gambler, male escort, professional emcee (stag party's for sure) and I am sure that if necessary can and will bribe and Bullsh*t His way into Heaven.
His stories alone could keep You glued to Your seat for hours.  His exploit's were legendary and His care for other's, and the World around Him were unsurpassed.  It is sad that He is gone.  It is even sadder that He took many months to pass but I think it took Him that long to get His story straight to get through the "Pearly Gates" without laughing!
May God Bless You with all His love GLenn, He broke the mold after He created You.
                                                                      With Loving Admiration,

The first time I ever heard of Freud was about 20 years ago when he was showing some old photos at the Motel 6. That took about 2 hours. I always tried to catch up with him  at SW after that. By happenstance I was standing next to him when he saluted E. Rickman's last ride. The one I will cherish most was  his last time at SW. He's sitting by the announcing trailer. I walked over to talk to Slim and recognized him. The Carbinite liner was pitted across from the trailer. He wanted to see the liner but didn't think he could make it on his own. I was honored to help him get there and back. RIP Doc you touched so many.

I first met Doc Freud at WOS in 2014, my first trip to the Salt.   He came wandering into the impound area as we worked to prepare the Milwaukee Midget for the next morning's backup run.  And it was apparent he knew Chris and most of the others already.    It was evident that he was rooting for Chris to set a new record, in an obscure, low powered, stock bodied class.    And, frankly, I was surprised he took any notice at all.    That's the way of it in most other forms of racing.    Your direct competitors take notice of you, but by and large, your only friend is: obscurity.

Of course, that was before I got to know Glenn.

He was truly interested in all things that were being achieved, whether those achievements were at the "pointy end", or whether they were from a group of "midwestern misfits" campaigning an orphan chassis powered by a "tractor engine" designed in the 1930's . . . . .

I found him to be a caring, kind and sentient human being, one who appreciated the best qualities of others and always promoted the positive.   We stayed in contact via the forum, and I appreciated his humor, wit, insight, and advice.   I considered Freud a "replacement" dad for my own departed father.

I'm visiting my son in Tacoma at Thanksgiving, and I had hoped to trek north for a visit with the Doc if that would be possible.   I guess that's not going to happen now . . . . .

Requiescat in pace Pater.    Atque in perpetuum, Pater, ave atque vale.    Although you are gone, be assured you will not be forgotten . . . . .

May the next part of your journey be smooth, and downhill, with the wind at your back . . . . .

Let me start by saying this obviously isn't Freud. This is his grandson Brett. I wanted to make a post and thank all of you for your kind words, regarding my papa. I think you all know he was a very emotional person. I know how much all of your posts would have meant to him.

I always loved to hear about his passions, and what he was up to. He loved to tell me stories about bonneville and I loved listening. He was always so excited for his next trip to the salt.

I would love for all of you to share some epic Freud stories. He may be gone but his spirit will live forever. One of his requests was that some of ashes be spread at bonneville. We plan to do that eventually.

It means so much to our family to see just how special he was to all of you and the racing community.

Parker was the one who did the PCT a few years ago.  Freud updated me daily as I had hiked it long ago at the same age.  I made it a point to lecture his grandson Parker to make sure he didn't rush through it all in a blaze of speed or while wearing blinders.  And to remind him that although we sometimes think we might hike something like the PCT again in our lives -- it doesn't always happen later.  Enjoy it all when you can and when you are doing it.

Brett.  Your G'Pa was quite the person.  He will be missed terribly but he will never be forgotten.  Last time I saw him, he gave me several items from his archive to put on my wall as he wasn't sure if he'd make it back to Bonneville itself much less Australia.  He will be the first to admit that he was tired and wasn't sure if a return visit would happen.  He always said he'd love to have some of his "essence" spread across the salt one day when he wasn't walking amongst the rest of us.  Glad you will make that wish happen.

Your G'Pa talked for quite awhile on getting his name done up as a Ford logo for a necklace.  After the stroke, I doubted he would be sporting jewelry much anymore.  Made him this and hopefully it helped remind him when alone in his room of all the good people he called friends over the years and decades.

He was a good man and has a great legacy with friends that you should definitely be proud of.  Hopefully he shared a lot of it with you... but don't be afraid to ask us stories as I'm sure he hasn't told you them all! =)

Another.... Several years ago at the 6 Freud was chatting outside his room with several folks... I walked up behind him.... pants him... he was wearing is usual elastic band shorts... It was like he didn't even notice... just kept talking with his shorts at his ankles... after we were joking about it and I said Freud, you didn't even look down to see your shorts at your ankles... he said he was afraid to... he didn't remember if he had put on his trademark speedo underwear.... He said for all he knew he could have been going commando... He was comfortable in is own skin.

In 1978 Don Vesco brought his girlfriend Marsha Holly to Bonneville.  During Speedweek she road his streamlined bike with one engine disconnected to a record that put her in the 2 club.  But the most important thing she did that year is take a picture.  With Don driving, Marsha hung out the window and took the picture below.  They could have been driving 30.... but they weren't.  The subject of the picture knew folks would always ask him how fast he was going, so he was riding flat out.... so to speak...
about 30MPH slower than Rollie
Yep, that's our boy

I met him at El Mirage just a few years ago, and he was kind and generous with his stories. An old LSR roadster had been rebuilt (Ruiz I think), and that brought out a lot of 'old timers'. I was thrilled to be there and watch from the edges.

Remember the trail of tickets at Salt Talks?

Freud would peel off 20 tickets at a time and let his target know he was cheep if he didn't shell out.

He recruited my son (Gus) when he was 12 to be his sidekick selling tickets and they teamed up for several years.

He also hung the nickname "the Little Puke" on Gus, a bit of a backstory there.

There were some pretty funny stories at Freud's memorial. The dynamite behind the police station was epic. Rental cars going into reverse at 75mph, epic. His grand daughter talking about driving backwards 8 miles to the doughnut shop, just plain silly A$$ fun! I guess in Freud's memory next year at Speedweek I will do the sighting lap backwards.

He was a good man and has a great legacy with friends that you should definitely be proud of.  Hopefully he shared a lot of it with you... but don't be afraid to ask us stories as I'm sure he hasn't told you them all! =)

Gary Freud here, Freud's son. I have the light you made him in my office. Sometimes I turn it on and just think of all the great memories I had with him. Thank you so much for building this light it meant a lot to Freud just as it does to me.

Glenn was the best!

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but pulling up over the hill with the first look at the salt it brought back fond memories of Doc.  I don't think that will ever change.

Today would have been dad's 90th birthday. I'm certain he is causing mischief and celebrating with mom. Happy Birthday to the original "most interesting man in the world!"

Freud and I had talked about him joining one of my "guided tours" of Hwy. 93.  We never got there.  This year, by myself, I couldn't help from missing him again.  I rejoiced in the times we spent together -- lots about silly stuff.  Lots of hijinx, lots of laughter, lots of memories.

So happy we got you a bike ride, and I know we were both glad the Busa crapped out and you ended up on Nick's bike...
Fond memories always my friend.

Since you brought it Up, Gus:  No doubt the best was you and Freud selling tickets at Salt Talks.

I can think of so many times and smiles, but that one takes the cake.  Thanks to both of you.

Happy birthday again Doc. Messaged your partner in crime for his birthday yesterday. Bret missed the swim meet this year as well.  Gary showed up at the 6 attempting to fill in for you, did a fairly good job for a kid. He was headed to SLC at about 9 am finally left the 6 about 530 or so. You did a good job with that one my friend. Keep your eye out unfortunately there?s a few more legends headed to you this last year. Y?all should be having some great racing and discussions.
I?d tell ya to stay outta trouble but I know better

I guess that's that for the Kilo.  Moved the course so many times this year that they were probably looking the fabled spot.  Maybe they thought the Kilo was an Hawailan fishing boat.

A photo Glen took ten years ago last week. He printed off a poster sized copy and sent it to me.

And THEN I started looking at it CLOSER . . .

There are countless photos out there Glen shared with so many of us - and as often as not, he would put some subtle touch of devilry on the print - as he did on the bumper of the Midget.

To Doc, my friend, the poet laureate of the salt - Freud, you remain sorely missed.

Gary, It was really nice to see you at the 6. Your father was really one of a kind. We had so many great times together on the salt, at the 6, the SLC hotel near the airport and the Northwest Reunions. I smile every time I think of him and the stories he would tell. RIP Doc you will never be forgotten

The back story behind this is Freud referring to Kenny Roberts as the little puke.

Freud suggested that my RZ should be the Little Puke Edition instead of the Kenny Roberts Edition.

I told Freud I wasn't compfortable with doing that and he told me if Kenny happend to see it and object to it he would make Kenny sign the bike.

When this guy took over the riding duties on the "Little Puke Edition" Freud started referring to him as the Little Puke.

What a character and a pleasure to know, Freud is missed.

Freud was my American Pop.

He did so much for me you guys have no idea.

I miss my SR-71 emails, the good advice and the friendship.

The most genuine guy I've never met.

God Bless you Glenn. 🙏🙏🙏✝✝✝
