Title: Beyond the Wheel
Post by: jacksoni on February 27, 2017, 12:01:45 PM
This is a short program, Nascar centered, that has a segment showing tonight called Bonneville 71 about Bobby Isaac and his recently outlawed Dodge Daytona which was taken to Bonneville and set a number of records. There is some vintage footage plus some modern where the current owner of the car took it back for a reunion of sorts. Not about Bonneville per se but perhaps of some interest.

On Fox Sports Network- FS1.

Just a comment . . .

I'm sure NASCAR outlawed it way before the SCTA did.

I'd guess having an historic car like that, it would be best not to farkle it up bringing it up to current safety specs.

sorry, I was not clear. Recently outlawed as in 1971 when they had been tearing up the other cars and that is when they took it to the salt. The current owner had it back out there as mentioned and sounded like was 2015 or 2016, not sure. And if they didn't take it apart totally, as we all know it is no longer as pristine as it looked.

They were out there during the Shootout.... just on another part of the salt around the dike corner.

Gents,

The Dodge Superbird is still legal in SCTA competition.  Lee Sicillo from Dallas , Texas holds the AA/CPRO and A/CPRO records with one.

Just saying a properly-restored 1971 model may not be up to SCTA safety requirements . . .

Yeah - Lee's car isn't quite what I'd call a numbers-matching resto.  But it's fast.  Take your pick.

Actually Lee will tell you both of his winged cars are numbers matching... number painted on right door matches the number painted on the left

Stainless, are ya postive about that?  His number is, if remember, right after the Bockscar's -- 1001.  If you put that number on a piece of glass it'd look the same from either side, so maybe instead of matching -- we're just looking through the car at the number on the other side using our  - - -

Yeah, it's snowing and I'm going cabin-fever-crazy. :-o

At least I had the "Dodge Daytona" part right in my original post.. And I did not mean to imply that the current owner brought the car to Speedweek or such; was only a reunion with some of the crew original to the time on the Salt in 1971. Still, some of the old footage was fun.

Good clips in that video from when NASCAR was worth watching - before they sold out and became NA$CAR.

NASCAR never actually outlawed the "Winged Mopars" as such, just restricted them to 305 Cu In displacement which effectively put them at a huge disadvantage.  There was at least one for sure that ran the '71 Daytona 500, I've got a picture of it buried somewhere.  I think but not positive there was a second that ran in '71 as well.  My memory is a tad fuzzy about some of the details of that day, those were in my  race chasing times...........
