Title: Hey, Slim! We're famous!
Post by: trimmers on November 08, 2016, 08:52:15 AM
Or is it infamous?  The new (Jan 17) issue of Hot Rod has a Bonneville feature, including a picture taken from the stand at the drivers' meeting.  Where's Waldo?  Hint:  you're standing a bit in front of me, to my right.  You: red hat, me: green hat.  It also has an article about Danny Thompson and the Challenger 2.

Yah. And  once again  they  accidently avoided  including me and my car. Did make it back in the 1986 article though :)

Hey Jack, they never include the lakester either... my guess is because it is a half-breed hybrid mix of car and bike.... perfect for Bonneville, doesn't fit any mold

Best part of the Danny Thompson article- at least to my way of thinking- is learning that he IS NOT yet retiring the Challenger 2, as he had said he would. I sure hope he gets the opportunity to run for the FIA record.

He did run the FIA record later in the season, Mike Cook's 2016 shootout. Blew tire and loaded up leaving the salt after the first run. How can a magazine article which is writtne 90 to 120 days before publication be current?

Maybe it was written later than that.  After all, the article did mention not getting the FIA record, which was a month or so after Speedweek.   I ran into Danny as he was gassing up at the Sinclair truck stop when he was leaving the Shootout.  He told me then that - if he could get sponsorship - he'd consider giving it another shot.  The car obviously has more in it, as he also said his GPS showed 413MPH when he blew the tire, which was around the 3-mile mark.   As I recall, he still had an entry speed of around 350MPH when he got to the lights - after coasting for about 2 miles!   Let's hope he's back for the Shootout in 2017, and that conditions are further improved.

Us old guys who grew up reading about Mickey and all his auto exploits would love to see Danny do well with the reconstituted liner. All the best to him in the future!

The lead time on most magazines is 3 months. So this is just about right. Picked up a copy a few days ago but still haven't looked at it?
