Title: Drag Front Runner air pressure
Post by: mabsmeier on September 09, 2016, 04:03:38 PM
I recently hit the jackpot on e-bay and bought a pair of NOS Goodyear drag front runner D1287's with (5")rims. They are the type used on top fuel dragsters a decade or 2 ago. I plan on using one on a new sidecar rig build but, I have no idea what a safe operating range of air pressure might be. Going on nothing in particular they seem to feel right at about 45-50psi but it's just a guess. Any insight would be appreciated.

Might check the rulebook on that. There is a life expectancy cutoff on tires. Look at the manufacturing date.

The age limit applies to motorcycle tires not race only car tires. I got the thumbs up from SCTA before I started bidding.

I'm not sure what pressure the folks were running on those tires, last ones i saw run was in the late 90's. I could ask if anyone remembers.

But I do have a very "BIG WARNING" DO NOT AIR THEM UP UNLESS THEY ARE FULLY MOUNTED ON THE HUBS!!!! The bolts that hold the rim halves together have been known to fail and could cause catastrophic injury or worse. Just saying.

I run Hoosier drag fronts (on all four courners) and for those the recommended pressure is 35 psi.

You can go to Goodyear website. and ask they will e-mail you back. That's what I did for my 15x4 front runners they are 40psi.

Don Garlets ran them on his streamline dragster after the belt and disc. He is at the Museum of Drag Racing on Ocala, FL. Call him at the museum he will talk to you. Besides he has a record with a flathead stream liner. He is almost always there.

We ran 288mph with a 279 exit speed with the 222 Camaro at WORLD OF SPEED  in 1994 using Goodyear drag front runners with 45lbs
of air pressure. No problems. This was before the 300 mph rated tire which we now use.
