Title: One Run Bob
Post by: Bob Drury on August 23, 2016, 03:01:30 PM
While I showed up at Speedweek intending to volunteer My services (which I did to the Potentate of Porta Poties and the STS booth, My real intention was to visit all of My friends from this site (2 or 3 but I can't remember), the guys I have given advice to during their builds and even the guy whose record I am chasing.  But I started having symptoms which on about day 3 started to resemble signs of a stroke.  If they would have gotten worse I would  Have headed for the Wendover Hospital but worried that they may automaticly cut off My right leg, I chose to head towards Idaho Falls which is roughly three hours from  Wendover (knowing that My passenger was up to date on CPR, We had a C.B. Radio, and there are lots of Cops all the way) and over the next two days made it home safely other than losing the ability to talk or even utter a sound twice for 5 minutes + or _  all went well except for the tow into Baker City and ten hour layover for repairs (If you have serpentine belts on a chevy truck 454 the main bracket holding the power steering pump and tensioner pully will eventually break the top and bottom ears at the block and You cannot see them where they break... believe Me You positively will go no further even with a brand new backup belt in the truck!
The next morning I felt o.k. and took My guest to breakfast and dropped Him off at the Portland Airport, came home, emailed my doctor followed by calling the clinic He works at and told the receptionist that I had just emailed Him and wrote URGENT at the top and that I needed Him to read it right away.
Suffice to say that within a hour I was called for active duty in the E.R. and I mean right now.
Over the next eleven hours I lost the ability to speak 6 or seven more times and as of today I am in the midst of seeing a bevy of specialists trying to determine if I have had a minor stroke, blood clot, aneurism or what else as nothing shows up on the MRI or out of ordinary cardioligcaly speaking (although this was late Friday night and No specialist had or for all I know has yet seen and reviewed).
I have been home for three days and as I said before now going Doctor to Doctor to figure it out.
This is not a "Pity Party" post but rather a Heads Up to all.
                                                   Know the signs of stroke
Know and have a list with You at all times of every drug You take and the dosage
Know that dehydration can emulate the signs of stroke and other emergencies
Know that You will not recover from Heat exhaustion or Heat Stroke and May Die even after You think You are okay a day or two later
and that You need to get to the nearest Hospital as soon as possible as even a Doctor may misdiagnose Your problem and believe Me
                                                     your problem may kill You.
As for Me, this obviously hasn't been resolved but it looks like I will live to piss a few more of You off, and by the way Old Stud Racing is rolling off the trailer next Year on 25% Nitro and if the Salt will Hold it upping the percentage 5% every pass as I plan to become the first stock bodied Studebaker to run over 250 and also get My Red Hat, Sell The Car, Truck and Push Truck, fly Home, kick back , have a life and return to Speedweek to volunteer and eventually kick over on the Salt.  Oh yeah, and a few of You can then kiss my ass knowing that I will be smilling.
Grateful to be alive and proud to be Sober,
                                                                                  "One Run" Bob Drury, out......................................................................

Sorry to hear about your medical problems, Bob.

But, on the positive side, you now have one more place between home & Wendover to point out, where you've broken down.  A couple more trips and the narrative will be non-stop.   :dhorse:

Bob, first & foremost I'm glad your are recovering.

Secondly, it was a pleasure meeting & trying to talk with you. I thought something seemed off.

Lastly, thanks for the rooms.

Bob, glad to hear you are doing well. I have had similar experiences and the doctors finally found a ulcer on my carotid artery (and removed it). Been fine for two years now. Good luck, Phil

If you EVER THINK you are having a stroke get to the ER. There is a drug called TPA but it has to be given within 3 hours of first symptoms to be effective. I had a stroke in 2013, dizzy, throwing up, disoriented. Every time I opened my eyes I threw up. I could not walk for three days, was in ICU. TPA cured me and the forth day I walked out and have not ANY issues since. TPA is a super strong blood thinner. NO joke, take it seriously. Glad you are getting better, Bob.

Thanks for the kind responses but until about three I didn't or couldn't put together that anything was wrong.  The first two days in mid sentence I would suddenly slur my words and then end up the sentence fine.  It was as if I was drinking again (39 months sober and grateful to have a second chance at life) and in fact when I mentioned it to My guest He said that My cousin who met us for dinner the previous night had pulled Him aside and asked if I had fallen off of the wagon and He told him not unless I had a jug hidden in the toilet tank.
A day later I was leaning into the drivers side window of Gary Spencers push truck and Gary was in the passenger seat.  Out of the corner of My eye I noticed the truck driver seemed to be looking down towards My left hand and when I looked down My left hand was shaking like a leaf (essential tremmors)  and by the next day after a couple more quirky events made Me realize that It was time to haul ass and I throwing caution to the wind wasn't about to head anywhere but home.  Smart move, No, but I didn't want to accidently be buried with a bunch of Mormon's (and I have nothing against Mormon's... please, its a joke, no hate mail needed, thank you). and also keep in mind that confusion is also a sign of heat stroke, dehydration, and many other health problems besides stroke, so Me being dumber than shit going into this deal (I race a cash toilet at Bonneville for God's sake) off WE head away from the nearest Hospital.  Go figure.
The good news that I received within the last hour is a call that tomorrow morning I will receive a call to go in the Hospital  For a total scan that would show if I have a clot in a Heart valve or blockage any where else and it will be done by the people who save lives every day.
And as I said in my first post "this is not a pity party" nor if for whatever reason this becomes My last ever Post know that I have loved every minute of misery that Land
Speed Racing has caused Me and It's been a hell of a party and even the people I pretend to dislike I wish the best.  I still got fifty gallons of Nitro to burn so I plan on doing it next Year and I really am not worried so please don't worry about Me. I have had a undeserved 39 months of sobriety and that alone is a bonus so if anything, reread My first post and know the signs of stroke, etc. and worst case scenario  is next years 250+ pass on Nitro is going to please a lot of our friends and relatives going through the five mile in the sky.  (I sure hope Timer Glenn isn't there but maybe I will have a tape with Me to say "car number 394... take it to impound!

Bob, a few years ago I did some planning on what to do if something happened to me like it did to you.  The nearest hospital to the west is in Elko as best as I can figure.   That is where I want to go so I am closer to home if anything happens.  Since we both live in about the same place, you will be closer to your house, too, if you go there.

Bob it was REALLY good to see you at SpeedWeek and I am also sorry to hear about your medical issues. Hopefully your results from todays scan(s) will be good with no major issues. Whatever the results, please follow the Dr.'s advice so we CAN see you and 394 on the salt next year. I'm already waiting for the nitro smell!

Thanx again to all, To Me its a win/win situation  (unlike our upcoming lose/lose presidential election)  and I think it would be a real fluke it things go South. What pisses Me off most is I spent $168. on blown up pictures I wanted to give to friends  and spent another $80. on snake bite medicine for people that I am forced to smooze for Future "considerations"  The only good thing is that while delivering two bottles of medicine to a Mr. D.W. in inpoud and knowing that He prefers medicine in boxes and not being able to purchase any  at a Store/gas station/nail salon I found a closeout damaged goods store the they had a closeout bin of either wine or vinegar and it was cheap!  So Dan, if You see Me at the next speedweek with a big old pucker on Your Lips, I may want to sniff you for a moment or two before We embrace....
Just received a second call telling Me that I shold be reciving a third call telling me that they will call Me when and where this procedure is infact going to happen.
I believe this is the same Hospital where Stainless had his penile implant surgery done but in my case I didn[t have a big  uglly long nose to contribute.  Next time You see
Stainless  ask Him to honk his talliwacker at You..........................One Run Bob speaking as usual only the Truth as I know it................................................out.

ORB, when I saw your name posted under "health, welfare and passings" I immediately looked to the Birthdays to see if indeed Freud and you are twins, not so much.

Then a little panic set in as I opened the posting, Glad you're still with us and thanks for keeping us updated on the situation.

By the way, would you mind if I came by and sorted through the stuff that Stainless didn't steal (yet).

 Take care, Don

Bad news for Most. Either the Hopital thinks I am not in immenent danger or are hoping that I am as the procedure is now scheduled for Monday morning.  I wonder what odds they are giving in the Hospital workers pool?
Worse news for all of You... I am supposed to kick back and post on here or watch porno until that time and porno puts Me to Sleep any more.... :-P :-P
time to drag out the in car videos and any with Al Teague, Carl Heap, Chauvin Emmons "attention in the sh*t houses",The Thunder Frog,Fogie,or Earl Woodens horrifying and miraculous crash in His beautiful yellow Crosley Comp Coup which shows the finest video shot I have ever seen :  after the debris comes to a stop in three heaps, no one has got there to see if Earl is dead or alive and here comes one wheel and tire rolling past the whole pile, heading for the six....

For anyone who gives a rats patootie, just a quick update:  Monday I go in for a EKG and other tests, Tuesday more tests, and apparently they think I may have had a mini stroke and want to check out My Heart valves for a blood clot or blockage.  They don't seem to be in a big Hurry so You can take that as good news or bad news as I probably am not their favorite patient (if You get My Drift) so I am learning how to knit in the mean time...................

Today was pretty interesting.  The Hospital has this new state of the art gizmo that uses ultra sound and doplar radar (just like the weatherman!) with colors showing the inside of your heart, the chambers, the valves and the blood flow and pumping from chamber to chamber.  The guy that runs it spent the better part of two years learning how to use it and it is literally amazing to watch.
I was able to see a missing 5/8 socket and several Krispy Kreme donuts amongst the debris.
He is not a doctor so when I asked Him if I was still alive He said "apparently yes".
Tomorrow They are going to put a bunch of post-it patches on and wire Me to a monitor and send Me home with it for a day and then download it.  No porno movies for Me tomorrow night...............
The only symptom I have had in the last ten days is a moderate headache but being a retired professional drinker this ain't so bad.

If that charlatan using the gut-video had been really good he could have told you if that socket was shiny - or the black impact wrench socket that I left at your shop a couple of years ago.  I think we were both still drinking then. . .

I have worn that 24 hour EKG a couple of times. I was glad i am not still working at the airport. May have had some difficulty wearing a box with bunches of wires strapped to me as I went through the gate.

The "gizmo" was a 3D Echocardiogram with Dopler, and The guy that wired Me up today said they are developing a 4Dimension model.  He*l, I can't even figure out how to use a smart phone (go figure) and the last time I saw something in 3D it was in the late 60's and called "window pane".
Perhaps the Potentate of Porta Potties could expound further on this subject..........   ORB, out........................
