Sending copies to your Congressional representatives is a great idea!  Being one myself (but not BLM!), I know that nothing strikes fear into a Federal employee like a Congressional inquiry.  Since (to quote BLM) Bonneville is "Managed by the BLM as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern and Special Recreation Management Area...", shouldn't preservation of its environment and recreational usage have priority over mining? It's time for BLM to answer for their prolonged foot-dragging, and recent threats.

Louise has offered me a pdf version of her Op-Ed that I may offer to others.

Here's the plan!

If you will write a personal note to your US Representative and your 2 Senators ---We will send you a copy.  Here in AZ I have already made contact with racers who have agreed to drop it by their Representatives office personally. Contact office before mailing it asking to whom to follow up with works also..

Thanks in advance for helping us Restore to Preserve the Salt Flats!!!

Would it be possible to post the pdf here? I would definitely like to send it to my representatives.

Great article Louise however I was surprised you did not mention other draws that the salt flats have to bring commerce to Wendover.

I think it is a mistake to make this issue entirely about the racing community. I am sure that the movie industry, advertising industry, and the spectators which attend other events like the rocket archery events I have heard of, also bring dollars and help generate public interest in the preservation of the salt flats.
Not to mention the historical notes about the Donner party and how the rail road across the salt flats opened the door to the western U.S.

It is easy for some folks to find no common ground with racers, from many of the comments I have seen in some places some who only see the high dollar streamliners think it is a small group of rich playboys with toys. Especially the environmental folks might have some difficulty getting worked up over race car drivers, but they might make a better connection with other uses.

I think that although our personal focus is on the racing aspect is our primary concern we are also trying to preserve a national treasure for other users too. As you have mentioned in the past it is one of the truly wild lonely places in our world where a camper can see first hand the struggles of the Donner party and other early pioneers. People who are interested in geology and history know it is an important marker for major geological change in the past, with the Bonneville flood event, which created huge geological changes in the western U.S.

I think as we continue to beat the drum to save the salt we need to make an effort to broaden the appeal of our message by researching and talking about some of these other aspects of the saltflats and their historic place in America and the geological changes that shaped a continent and the settlement patterns of the Western U.S.

Hotrod, (reply 11 above), is right, right, right.  I think he has very well posed the most promising way forward for any further arguments for saving the salt.  In addition, if the video released a bit earlier were re-scripted to include these elements and have the racing somewhat de-emphasized, it would have the potential for reaching a much broader scope of interest groups and supporters.

The alliance / save the salt might also want to touch base with those other interest groups and get someone from each group as associate members so we can show that more than just the racing community is interested in saving the salt flats. I note that the web page http://www.save-the-salt.org/friends-of-save-the-salt/ has no representatives of any of those other interest groups on its friends of the salt. You need to get names that will be recognized by other interest groups as people who's opinions they value. A couple leading private rocket folks, a few nationally known archers, maybe some well known aircraft folks like Burt Rutan talking about the value of unique environments like the dry lakes and salt flats for aviation development. Actors who have filmed on the salt flats, talking about the unique vistas that make some of their movies possible.

To connect with the environmental folks we need to give more exposure to the folks who have used the salt flats to develop electric propulsion systems for cars and motorcycles.  Remind them that racing is the R&D lab for transporation developments of all kinds. Every car on the street is the living legacy of race cars years ago.

Same with outdoor folks and snowmobiles, it is a proving ground environment for so many different types of vehicles where they can be tested at work loads not achievable anywhere else on earth.

Perhaps the Mayor and a few others could put their heads together to build a list of the the other uses not commonly known. Given the new museum build if the salt flats dies, then the museum will lose a lot of its value.

In most states they have a liaison office to assist movie producers and advertisers connect with the right people to shoot on location.
Get someone like Clint Eastwood or Jay Leno who has an entertainment connection to talk on video about how popular the salt flats is for certain types of movies.
Does anyone have a list of all the movies who have shot on location in and around Wendover? I have found these references certainly at least one or two of the people involved with those movies would be inclined to add their voice to the preservation effort.

Does anyone have a $ figure for how much money got spent in Wendover for filming Independence Day (1996), The World's Fastest Indian (2005), or The Tree of Life (2011), Knight Rider (1982 television series), Warlock, SLC Punk, Cremaster 2 from Cremaster Cycle, The Brown Bunny, Gerry, Top Gear, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.

In 2004, the Stardust spacecraft released its sample-return capsule for a landing in the Bonneville Salt Flats after its flybys of asteroid 5535 Annefrank in 2002 and comet Wild 2 in 2004.    http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/news/status/060115.html

Don't forget the connection to WWII history either.

This assortment was found in about 30 - 40 minutes of google searching there is lots of info out there to provide points of connection with other constituency groups.

Agree with Mr. Hotrod, We are "just a bunch of race car guy's" to many of the people who's support we could really use, including those with whom we might not otherwise agree. (environmentalists)

I've just sent an email to Sir Anthony Hopkins' agent in the US in hopes of any form of support.  One small step...

It's a long shot.

I'll be stunned if Hopkins joins the fight. My interaction with him and the cast revealed it was just a job. The guy does not even ride a bicycle and is terrified of motorbikes.

hotrod brought up a very good point, that there are many people that use the BSF besides racers.  Along the lines of the movies, have you ever noticed how many commercials are filmed there?  El Mirage is also used for a lot of commercials, but BSF is used a lot especially for car companies.

Certainly the more we can band together would seem to help.

The attack was on the racing community and we were limited to a 700 word response.

StS/UA ALWAYS includes the other recreational user in our comments when speaking  to the media, government and elected officials. Please familiarize yourselves with the many articles on the StS & UA websites which will not publish here in an effort to create ONE official resource page.

If any of you would like to contact others for support, we welcome the help.

Racers---it is time to hot rod our Racer Hat---we need to install a second PR bill on it!!

We racers can play a major part in Restoring the Beloved Salt Flats by doing our part to help build the POLITICAL WILL to restore them.

This will be done not by attacking the BLM or it's employees: our desires will be met by increasing the awareness of the salt depletion problem by our efforts with elected officials and the general public.

Please follow the lead of the RACERS  above that are wearing a 2 bill cap with the PR bill forward.

I feel we will soon have more Plans of Action---to put into action--we are out of pre-stage in the staging lanes---the start line is in sight---we will soon be--dropping the clutch!!

So go to the major manufacturers. They use BSF too. The majority of cars that attempt speed records are powered by one of the big three.
There must be some mileage in this for them. :dhorse:
