Title: Where will you be August 13th?
Post by: typo41 on January 28, 2016, 02:01:04 PM
I have been away from a bunch of Land Racing, both here and my shop and my studio. But it is time to be positive about SpeedWeek this year. Yes the sky is falling, but as I said I want to be positive about this year. Yes the Mining Operation is evil, but it was the weather that kicked out butts. Yes I want salt back. Yes we need to do all that we can to make that happen. But I also want to run my roadster down the Great White Expanse.
Someone asked if I was going to boycott the salt this year even if there is a SpeedWeek, the reasoning being that not racing a year would help heal the salt.  Well it is my understanding that with winter rains the salt is 'healed' every year. So unless we start scooping loads of salt onto our trailer and vehicles when we leave, racing do not leave a big scar on the Bonneville Salt Flats.
So this was my five minutes of soapbox, lets think positive, plan for the worst, hope for the best. And maybe in the middle we will be racing.......

I'm with you Tony. As long as there is flooding, separation and drying we will be OK to race. If it rains much in July and August we will have the problems.  Ill see you In Wendover!!!

Check back with us in July  :-D

I went to wendover last year to check out the salt and the town ,I went to the KOA camp grounds the tent spots were too small for my tent! so this year I,LL camp at the bend I think.

Lumpy,
          Just a word of caution.

The big tents generally do not fair well if a storm comes through at the Bend.

We use smaller mountaineering type tents and so far they have survived.

When the storm rolled through during Salt Talks at the 2011 Speedweek a look around in the morning confirmed this.

I could not find any rooms last week in Wendover, so I made reservations
for the 12th thru 16th in Wells NV, about 58 miles away. If I stay longer, I
figured it will be easy to find a room in Wendover.

Hoping to find a team that needs help, would love to be involved in someway.
I grew up around cars, my dad owned M&W Auto Supply in El Reno Ok. I
have been involved in Sprint Cars, Go Karts and Streetrods most of my life.

I have a 32' class A RV. Is the surface at the Bend solid enough to safely park it there without fear of getting mired?

We had a 31' RV in 2013.  We had zero problems getting in and out of The Bend.  There was plenty of room for more campers as well.  In the morning, you simply can not beat the view!!!

I paid the man for my share of our Speed Week trip yesterday, so I am in and oh so ready.  Team SPEEDaSALT will be proudly flying the Iowa flag in impound!!!   :-D

I'm stuck across the river in August, but I hope to at least get away to Oshkosh for a few hours on Saturday -

Shooting for WOS as an observer.  I noticed Black Sabbath's tour has a stop in Salt Lake City which coincides with the WOS event.

The Midget won't be ready, but if the event doesn't happen, Ozzie's a good backup plan.

There's an idea.  Chris, need a passenger on the trip to and from SLC to hear the dulcet harmonies of Ozzie?  I've never been to one of his shows.  It might be entertaining.  Nancy doesn't get time off for WoS so it'd just be me.  I guess the two of us, totaling something like 10 feet 32 inches tall, should be able to fold ourselves into the Midget if you do decide to take it out to the salt.

Otherwise how 'bout if find some kindred souls for the concert and take a bunch of 'em, each paying some $$ for fuel, and we'll stack 'em like cordwood in the back of my pickup and make some money on the trip, too.

Sounds like a plan to me.  You in?

We are leaving space in our schedule for Speedweek. Our worst nightmare will be another Speedweek rainout and good weather for WOS and the Cook Shootout as we have scheduling conflicts with the IMTS trade show in Chicago which spans both events. Could not ask for worst timing. We had to commit to IMTS 23 months before the event. This was of course well before schedule was made up.
Having the car at the tradeshow is absolutely huge for us and Carbinite does pay for everything so we got to be there.

My entry is in for SW.

After the way the "hotels" "Treated" their customers last year, I'm holding up on making reservations till things are more certain.

From what I'm seeing, their new cancellation "fee's" will be higher than the SW entry. Go figure.

Bring on the salt.

I bit the bullet as a spectator and booked my room, will be there Monday and Tuesday as I will have just finished a race weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele. Obviously I don't have much of an investment to lose if it all goes sideways but I'm hoping, like the rest of you, that it all falls into place.

Well,

I have the hope that I will stand on this day at the starting line and see the racers going down the course...

Picked today my tickets (August and September meets) for the plane and took care for the car rental....and send my bank account to hell...

it's getting tougher every year to be at the salt....the air fair and the car rental prices increased again...

plane and car are this year around 5 500 dollars....

...so cross the fingers that we can race this year at the salt....drove the last two years enough around the states....I prefer to sweat at the salt and to frame the racer...

Looking for to seeing all my speed friends in the near future at the salt....

I just sent TFA's Speed Week event application in, YAY!!  We've had 2 rooms booked at Montego Bay for a while.
I am 110% positive that the salt is going to be beautiful.
MUST BE TRUE bc i had a dream about it last night.

For a while fear of bad salt had me planning on doing the July event at Loring.  Love that place, love those people.  Even talked with Tim Kelly & Long Island Joe Daly about their tech inspection and TFA lakester not having front brakes.  We agreed on a testing/run protocol which would assure not running off the end.  All set.
But thinking about it, i did 10 years on asphalt and my heart is now on the salt.

So all our eggs are now in the salt basket
I am soooooooooo psyched.

hey Johnnie!
We have been ready since last June, no big mods, just sitting there begging to be used.  "Just sitting" is hard on the TFA crew; we are all forgetting anything we knew.

I did some small data logging improvements, added steering departure log and FINALLY solved my poor rpm trace to the Racepak by installing a digital MSD ignition.  But other than that we are just waiting...
What are you bringing to SW, your monster "production" harley?

I kinda reworked my street Fatboy to make some DL runs, just to get my Competition License current. I didn't think we would be finish with the APS Bike in time, and wonted something to run, at least to get my license current. WOW, the rework project turned into a monster as one thing lead to another.
Heck fire by the time we were ready to go, the Fatboy might even run good enough for a record, How'd that happen. I am still working on some tuneup things,( NOS ) but other than that sitting and waiting too.

Just the Fatboy this year. By the time we were finished the darn thing got a little on the stupid side :-D

136 inches, LSR tires, after market every thing but the on/off switch.

Looks like an old school nightmare gone wrong  The NOS will be computer controlled with threshold points that have to be met prior to the spray working, Throttle position, RPM, and Speed. All three have to be above the set point to spray. So I will control the NOS with the throttle once the other two threshold points are met.

The power we are seeing so far meats the WOW factor. The good part is it is still street-able, I rode it to and from a fund raiser a couple weeks ago, it did just fine, just had to be careful. It was like riding a Thoroughbred without a guide horse.

What the hell, you only go around once, might as well have some fun.

Unfortunately on August 13th we'll be in Houston after a 3 week US roadtrip visiting NY, Philadelphia, Pocono NASCAR and then a tour round Texas.  After two years of cancellations and having toured the SLC locality with a rented motorhome we're taking a year out.  I'll be following progress on here and hope the salt gods are kind this year.  Hopefully 2017 we'll be back.

More important right now, at least to a bit of this website, is the question
"Where will you be on the evening of August 14th?"

That's the putative date for Salt Talks '16, and since we haven't had the picnic for a couple of years - I hope there's one heck of a demand for the get-together.

But up comes a big issue.  Salt Talks is the major fundraiser for landracing.com, and with two years of no salt racing (well, almost none) the bank account is way low.  And the big money-raiser at Salt Talks - is t-shirts.  And now to the crux of the matter:  I hesitate to make a bunch of shirts in the hopes that they'll sell and we'll have a profit left for the site - and have another no-race event and we've got to scramble to get rid of the shirts to try and get our money back and maybe even have some left to run the site.

What should I do?

Maybe make a really nice t-shirt with art like the speedweek shirts but don't date it or Salt Talk it. If you get a really bright and kick A design that is not dated you can sell them all year or over a couple of years. Make sure it is a good quality T that will hold up and then eventually get retired to a shop shirt. Someone here had  one on the site a year ago...maybe FlatCad but the artwork was cool and the colors bright.

My 2 cents

Great idea.  Don't date them.  And bring the old ones and get rid of them -- rather than looking at them year after year.

(The 200 Club keeps the same design -- becomes classic and doesn't get outta style.)

Quick bit of background for the sake of it's early Friday and I've got some time.

We do shirts via "dye sublimation", a process unrelated to traditional silk screened shirts and stuff.  It allows full-color reproduction of art - any art, from line drawings to color photos.

But I learned that I need to spend more time on color - getting the inks precisely farculated so the final shirt colors are right.  Don't ask me how I learned - ask Pork Pie and others about disappointing results.

Anyway, I'm paying attention to the comments.  Thanks, gentlemen.  That includes you, Stan.

How about the suggestions above (or those that will work) then take pre-orders so you get an idea whether the number sold + is viable for you. I'd be in for a couple.

If it weren't for this, that, and the other - I'm dang near ready to pack up the whole shebang, fire it all into the trailer, and make shirts while we're there.  But -- I'd rather do my spectating and howdy-ing and skip spending all bloody day in the trailer.

But that gives you an idea that the shirts are relatively easy to make - and also that I can change the art pretty readily.  And that means that we can make 'em (sorta) on demand.  That'll allow me to cover the instant needs and try to make more if later needed.

Then there's shipping, and so on.  Dammit, why does business have to try to butt in when I'm having fun racin'?

Just got good news for our racers.
Bill Lattin was able to negotiate a modified cancellation policy for everybody who has room reservations at the Wendover Nugget during SW.
Original policy was set for June 1st. New policy is as follows (per Nugget Management):

"This is what we will do for Speedweek. They will have till July 1st to cancel, if they cancel after July 1st they will be charged one night stay."

Bill is also in contact with other hotels and we will announce their policies as soon as we know more.

That should take a little pressure of all of us, to spend another month and evaluate the BSF conditions. Not saying we will have a final answer
by then, but hopefully we will know more.

After reading Latin's post with the BLM I'm confused if he was even allowed on the salt to check conditions?

Do you have to have permission from the BLM just to go on the salt?

After the closing the salt topic was closed, I hope this is where we can find out what's happening.

John,

The negotiations with the hotels happened earlier this week. We were trying to extend cancellation terms to July 1st.
Bill was going to go up later this week and inspect, start grooming and dragging the courses.
I believe anybody is ok to go out on the BSF, but not bring equipment etc. at this point.
Until BLM gives their ok to do so.
Be insured Bill, the board, USFRA, STS and UATSTS are all working on making it happen as soon as possible.
That's all for now.

Gus and I have made our reservations at the Bend, you can't beat the cancelation policy there.

Who manages the Bend?  Not who I hope does.

Any way, here's hoping not "Mud in Your Eye".

From SCTA's Facebook page:

Quote
Message from the SCTA President / Race Director

We have some great news to report! With assistance from Stuart Gosswein and Russ Deane with SEMA and Save the Salt Foundation we were able to negotiate with the BLM regarding our pre-trip plans. The BLM sent representatives out to the salt Friday June 3rd. The BLM reported the salt to be quite thin in some areas and reported improvements in miles 5 and 7. At this point we have permission to go out and access the conditions however, it may be a week or two before we can wheel pack or drag. I have expressed my concerns about wheel packing the areas of our long course from the 2 mile to the 3 1/2 where the silt came down from the mountains during the heavy rains. This will be necessary ASAP before the surface gets hard in order to have a smooth course through that area.

In closing I would like to thank Stuart Gosswein, Russ Deane and everyone inolved at the BLM for working together and coming to a resolution on this issue. I will keep the membership updated as the plans come together and more information becomes available.

Respectfully,
Bill Lattin

Justin, thanks for sharing that. I keep forgetting that most of the current news isn't from the SCTA website, but on their Facebook page. That is definitely sounding like encouraging news.

I'm not sure where to post this and might start a new topic for the event, but -

I just got off the phone with Allison Volk Dean, talking about the likelihood of SpeedWeek '16 happening.  And what did she say?

That she's talking with the banquet folks about the 200 MPH Club feed on Wednesday evening of SpeedWeek '16, that's what.  And that she's placing an order for table gifts for the banquet.

Sounds like someone else is confident that we're gonna have an event.

Charles, dang it -- how'd you sneak past me?  I was sitting in the SCTA"Fire Sale" area and someone pointed out your car a few down the line going to inspection -- and then I looked and you'd gone.  WTF?  At least say hi before you pack up the car and all those records. . .

My roadster is pissed off that it's not there. My pickup, however, says thanks for not going and please don't ever take me there as I don't want the fate of my predesessors :-D.....JD
