Title: National Museum of Naval Aviation - NAS Pensacola
Post by: gkabbt on October 25, 2015, 06:19:03 PM
After I left the GRM $2015 Challenge in Gainesville, I wanted to explore the panhandle area of FL as I've never been here.
On research before I left home, I knew one place I WAS going to visit was the National Museum of Naval Aviation aboard NAS Pensacola.
I certainly was not disappointed.....VERY good museum and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling in the area.

Here are some pics I took today:

and here is the Museum's website link:

As usual, I hope you enjoy,

Since you are posting about airplanes and the NW reunion in Portland area was recently a topic will add that the Evergreen Air museum just west of Portland is really good as well. The Spruce Goose is there. A SR-71 Blackbird. A P-38. A replica Bleriot flyer that was being worked on. A Thorp T-18 that was beautiful and an example of which I started to build as a Senior in college. My Mom was sure I'd kill myself in it so was pretty happy when after starting medical school I determined there was no way I'd finish so was sold. Learned a lot of metal working. Anyway, a really cool museum if you are into planes.

Jack, Thanks for the info and I'll be sure to add that to my list of things to do! I am thinking VERY seriously about attending the NW reunion.

Great photos, Gregg.  Thanks.

That place must be HUGE!

Tallguy,

This museum is housed in two buildings; one fairly good size and the second much smaller.
As you could imagine, with this being dedicated to Navy, Marines and Coast Guard Aviation,
it is small in comparison to the National Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH.

Link of my post when I was at the NMUSAF in 2013.....See post #4:

Gregg- good find! I went to A School at NAS Pensacola, and I always took visitors to the Museum. Such great displays, and there are always test pilots zooming overhead outside. Nice pictures.

Luke - Cool that you were here!!!!  I was talking with a guy who has a condo here and he told me that he also takes out-of-towners to this museum!
It REALLY is a nice facility and even on a Sunday, there were several jets taking off while I was there.  The noise was incredible!

PS
Tell Gretta and the kids I said hi!   Give me a call sometime when you guys come East...Would love to touch base!

The Pensacola NAS Museum is a real jewel. It's also the home of the Blue Angels Navy fighter demonstration team. During the winter months they train over the Gulf and have frequent shows off shore next to the museum.
Another really great treat is just down the I-10 near Mobile. The USS Alabama Battleship Park has sights you will never see elsewhere. The battleship USS Alabama, of course is open for tours. Berthed next to that is the submarine USS Drum. Then, there is the aviation museum. There are 28 warbirds nesting inside. This includes the original stealth plane, A-12 Blackbird, and the amazing B-52 Strato-Fortress.
Check it out at: www.ussalabama.com
It's just an hour away from Pensacola.

If you scuba dive the USS Oriskany is scuttled 26 miles off shore of Pensacola. The ship is sitting upright, the flight deck is 135' the bottom is 212' feet. The upper sections are accessible (bridge and superstructure) with a recreational dive card.
