The 2016 Bonneville NW Reunion will once again be held at the SHILO INN property at Portland Oregon Airport.
February 20, 2016
https://www.facebook.com/events/550439245114699/
To contact me use fotofreud@aol.com. Fone 425-422-6944
The doors will open at 5:00PM. The Saturday speaker will be Lee Kennedy, SCTA and Bonneville official.
Costs and reduced room rates will be announced around January 1, 2016
Tell your friends. We will make up for not having any events on the Salt these past two years.
FREUD
-
Team Go Dog, Go! will be there. Make sure there is a lot of food. This is great news, Freud.
-
Among other things food seems to be a great feature.
You are welcome to make as many trips thru the line as You want.
Look forward to seeing all of You.
It's too early for me to announce the reduced room fees and banquet costs.
I'm working on it.
FREUD
-
I've been there 3 years in a row and built 2 LSR bikes in 2 years (but still haven't raced on the salt). Can I come?
-
Any excuse to get out of Milwaukee in February is a major plus.
Have 'em put a vegetarian selection on the feed trough for Kate.
-
If the Debtor's Prison is still closed, I will be there................................... One Run, out............................................
-
Sofadriver....................certainly. You are welcome.
You know that there are other scooter builders attending and
they can help steer You thru the building conflicts.
You IS WELCOME.
Bring a friend.

Been wondering about all the Wishes for a place to Run?
Friday night, Feb 19, 2016 Mike Akatiff will fill us in.
He needs a track as much as anyone in his quest for
400 MPH with the Ack Attack motorcycle streamliner.
He has quietly been investigating all possibilities, including
Bolivia. He will give us the facts. So if you just know for
certain that the Alvord Dry Lake has been overlooked or that
noone is doing anything about running behind Floating Island
come and get the facts. The special room rate will apply to Friday
night as well as the remainder of the weekend.

Midget......both Washington and Oregon have unique
ingredients for salads. I'm certain we can keep
Mrs. Midget happy.
FREUD
-
Midget, I think Oregon is a smoke your salad state... lots of vegetarians
One Run, you haven't had racing expenses for 2 years.... you should have plenty of money :-D
Doc, I'll be there, maybe I can talk Linda into a trip... I'll take her by Drury's to keep her from thinking I have too much junk :-o
See y'all there
-
I know you probably have the Shilo Inn all booked but for the next year think about the World of Speed Museum in Wilsonville - near Portland, OR. It is a new museum dedicated to racing, including land speed racing.
http://www.worldofspeed.org/ (http://www.worldofspeed.org/). I have not been there yet, but will be going soon. They have a lot of racing exhibits and say they want to host events.
Don
-
The Director of the World of Speed Museum near Portland is Tony Thacker. A man well versed in LSR and Hot Rods in general. Prior to this gig he was a large part of the NHRA Museum and before that was involved with So Cal Speed Shop's Bonneville efforts with MG and Chevrolet.
Even more important - Tony is a really great guy. Pat Kinne
-
Midget, I think Oregon is a smoke your salad state... lots of vegetarians
That's why I try to avoid Colorado - too much time at the salad bar, you miss an exit, and the next thing you know, you're hitch hiking with an empty gas can to Wayno's . . .
-
I suspect we will have an organized trip to the museum... that was discussed at the last reunion....
Looking forward to being there.
-
Tony Thacker is no long associated with the museum. Too much time away from his home and family
had to be remedied. The original plan to have a working kitchen at the museum were changed. I will
be at the museum this coming week to make arrangements for a special tour if enough are interested.
I will soon list suggestions of places and events to keep you busy if You come early or stay late.
One thing was announced by the rental car companies. One Run's place is off limits.
This will be a fun event. Attitude adjustment goes in high gear upon arrival.
FREUD
-
Freud, You don't realize how correct You are! I will tell the story to Any who dare break the Embargo...........................
As per usual, Any who show up are free to sit on any pile they choose..............
One Run, out........................................................ :-o :-D
-
There are a few of us from the crime capital of Puget Sound that will be coming to the event.
-
Be forewarned. We will be equipped to handle your gang of stump jumping Banditos.
FREUD
-
We will be representing TEXAS!!
-
Fred, do you want a special section for your group?
I'll separate you from the vicious Canadians.
If You are traveling alone be armed.
FREUD
-
Hmmm. If we are being seated Geographically, then, I may be across the street at the Chinese Restaurant.. :-D :-D :-D :-D
-
We, Wifey and I, Will fly in. Be arriving Wed. We want to see some of the sights in the area. The natives wont know we are from Texas, until we open our mouth and speak.
-
Fred, You ought to drive down to Eugene and See Dennis Murray. His shop and "toys" are worth the two hour drive from the Portland Airport.
One Run Bob, out.............................................
-
That would be nice, if it is the Dennis Murray that makes Pipes for Bikes he is one of my sponsers.
-
That's the One..... (541) 461-8141 home
(541) 484-1176 shop
-
My best Lady and I are going to to try our best to make it.
Hope to see lots of old friends, maybe some younger ones, also.
Jim and Mary Ann.
-
I did not go to El Mirage in November (BIG MISTAKE!) so I'm thinking mighty hard about this trip.
Will probably be there for about a week doing the tourist thing.....never been in Oregon.
Gregg
-
One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post is there is a certain Merkur that I would like to get reacquainted with!

Mike, Thanks for that offer but I HOPE that Mr. Back will be in attendance for this event.
If so, I would not deprive him of his throne!!!!! :-D :-D :-D

Any new info about this, anyone?
Really looking forward to attending! :-D

Daughter Kyaera and I coming up on Monday that week , any help appreciated with hiking spots/snowshoeing, (hoping to get as high as we can on Mt Hood, elevation wise), fishing -coast ,rivers or whatever
Joe Amo
-
Joe,
If you are a licensed pilot, or know one and can rent a small plane; a spin around Mt. St. Helens to see the giant "blow out" is really impressive.
A friend gave us a ride in 1991 in his Cessna that was unbelievable.
Regards,
Jim
-
Airline reservations made. I'll be getting in on the 17th and leaving on the 25th.
Really looking forward to this and seeing the area!

Of all times for two computers to take a dump it is tonight. I'll make a post
Saturday Dec 19 that will have most all the answers about the banquet.
Just be patient.
Here's a foto of the Saturday nite speaker.

It would be fascinating to hear what Mike has to say. Any chance his presentation could be summarised on here? Unless he would feel constrained knowing his thoughts were being reported outside the room.
One place I have not noticed you guys discussing is South Africa. Whilst the Bloodhound team have exclusive access for a period, if you look a few years ahead Hakskeen Pan could become an attractive venue. I'm not sure how well the surface will work for wheel-driven vehicles though.
-
I have not spoken to Mike about any investigation of South Africa.
If he discusses it I will question him regarding distribution of the
talk.
Thanks for asking.

gettin' a little anxious here...........

Gonna miss seeing you Glenn, and everyone else this year, but I have a new Granddaughter due anytime and I fear the wrath of the Irish if I don't make myself available for diaper duty. Colleen has informed me that she will shout undecipherable Celtic spells at me if I'm not there 24/7... If that doesn't work she will poke me with a sharp object.
Have a good time, and Happy New Year everyone !

-
You will be missed but maybe you could negotiate one 16/7 day and come visit us.
Remember you missed some meetings when You were soldiering.
Not many make up days each year.

There are two events at the reunion, correct? So the only thing we need to pay for, in advance, is the 49 per person for the banquet?
-
You are correct Fred. Mikes presentation on Friday nite is a freebee
and so is Lee Kennedy's presentation after dinner.
There is a no host bar in the banquet room and a lounge just down the hall.
Everything happens in the hotel. One does not have to leave the hotel
for anything except to get away from One Run Bob.
Rental cars are only a few blocks away.
Thanks for asking.

The Shilo Inn that Freud uses, is remarkably great venue..
The restaurant is quite fantastic, even beyond the sat evening food offerings
great place to plan to have other morning noon or other endeavors....I think
most may be very, very surprised at the dining capabilities/experience here.
-
Ok, got everything all set. Flight res., room res, car res, banquet paid. I am really looking forward to the reunion.
-
... and don't forget to visit the World of Speed museum just South of Portland which has Mickey Thompson's Challenger amongst its large collection.
You can find directions and times online.
... also about thirty miles west of the Museum is the giant Aircraft Museum featuring the Spruce Goose that Howard Hughes built, and then You can visit the MANY Vineyard's in that area which turn out some of the World's Best Wines. They all have Tasting Rooms after which You can hitch a ride back to the Shilo for a nap!
Ol' One Run, out....................................................
-
All reservations made! Doc, I don't do PayPal so checks in the mail!
Looking forward to this and seeing an area I've never been in.
Do you guys know if it's OK to take pictures in the museums?
Gregg
-
You can show up less a room right? I live here in portland so...
Also, I'll drive the '60 Phoenix to the events. Who wants to follow my oil trail to evergreen?
-
Send Freud your registration and you are in. The hotel is for us out of towners.... like Freud...
-
If upon arrival You happen to see a disheveled looking Freud scurrying down a back corridor with a old straw suitcase that happens to have a few (?) greenbacks hanging out....... then and only then will You discover whether or not You have been adding to the good Doctors retirement fund..........

Yep, I'll be there as long as the Posse don't nab Me First.

p.s. If no Black racers are nominated for ANY and ALL Awards, I may boycott the Formal Dance after The Banquet Dinner...............

So all joking aside for a moment (and only just one), If I send a money order to the address in this thread that's all I need to do right? Well... and then show up. I haven't used my pay pal account in a super long time, I don't know if it's active or not.

We did, we are.... Thinking of going to see Murry on Friday I think. Hopefully Johnboy is arranging that. :|
Should we tweak FeRd to send out email confirmations... that should eat up a day or 2 of his time
-
You going to see Dennis Murray, the header guy? Let me know and we will caravan down.
-
As usual, I will be hosting a non-approved non-event at my abode about 5 miles from the Shilo Inn and across the bridge into Warshington.
I might be around Friday but call first. Saturday I will be ready to deny access from 10ish to 2:59 p.m. At 3 p.m. I get ugly and You will be gone.
Prudish wives or "neat freaks" will not do well here. Children who are well behaved are allowed but will be handcuffed if they touch anything.
This is a bachelors residence ruled by one giant face-licking dog and two older female cats who are meaner than Subaru. Parts of the house will be at best "dusty". The rest is not presently approved for human habitation.
Foul language and loud sexist guffaws may abound. I will furnish water, pop, cheap snacks. You want booze... you gotta bring it.
If that Stainless guy shows up again, I may be packing heat as it is now legal to preach in Washington while fondling your "gun".
If any are still in town with time to kill on Sunday, give me a call if you want to see my stuff. Others have come before and lived to tell about it..............
"One Run" Bob Drury (360) 696-1428 home or (360) 241-4768 cell

Will everybody be able to wear those cool stickers that say "MY NAME IS ............. " ?

Sounds just like my place!!... seirously... there is a drive shaft in the living room right now and coleman lantern parts scattered across the fire place mantle. Oh.. and the vintage plate modulated AM transmitter in the living room. (Heathkit DX-100) Oh and the walls are decorated with the side trim from a 1960 Seneca.
Anyway, I'll take that as an invite to get slobbering drunk and pass out on your sofa. What's a bachelor pad without a friend passed out drunk in the living room?
-
Crap. I shoulda thunk of this earlier, but I can still do it if I scurry. Blatant fund raiser follows:
If you'd like a super-duper nametag that you can pin on and use all the danged time -- I'll make one for you and ship it in time for the reunion in return for a $25 donation to landracing.com.
I've made 'em for Salt Talks, I've made stuff for One Run to give to his crew as thanks, I've made tags for lotsa stuff. If you want one with, say, your name and team name and vehicle number and a photo of your car/bike -- or whatever -- I can do those, too, for a $35 donation to the site.
"Standard" size -- something like a business card but maybe a bit bigger. Your choice of magnets or stick-pin-thingie to hold it on you or your shirt. No specific color choices for what it'll be made of -- other than if it's a photo tag then it'll be full color. And if I can get enough of you to pay for these -- I'll give Freud credit so he doesn't need to make
Getcher buttzin gear and get in touch with me so you can have a custom-made nametag for the NW Reunion. If nothing else -- I'll send them to the Shilo to await your arrival.
-

Are there any seats still available for dinner or will I have to stand in the lobby. Not sure if Pops will be able to make it or not, but if there's room I'll be in attendance.

Actually, Ben, the `One Run` moniker and all the stories that surround it are way to numerous and frightening to start expounding on here.....The real thing is much more..um....interesting.......scary.....sorry, got a bit out of kilter there.... :-D :-o

Anyone else run into this?

You got it, Don. They changed the terminology. "Change Is Good ©"

He is a fine young man, and I am sure there is little I could do to lead him too far astray! He has mentioned he is aware there are some places in Eugene that a person could possible get a beer that is not just flavored water and has volunteered to help me find them. I know college takes up most of his free time and money, but he said he wanted to come to Portland to see his Grandpa Freud. He mentioned you might have to work and I graciously told him he could hang with us...
Wow, it just occurred to me we need another emoticon.... a smiley shoveling subaru :-o
See you there
edit: folks always ask me how I got started landspeed racing...
I always tell them I fell in with the wrong crowd when I was young
-
ORB,
Junior, Little Puke or what ever you want to call him was going with or without me.
It sounds like he dumped me for the likes of Stainless.
You can only try and keep them headed in the right direction for so long.
Sometimes they fall in with the wrong crowd and go a stray.
Lord help you if they show up at your door.
Don.... Don... Don...

I second that. Lately it looks like we need one. :-D

Ah... Stainless, I was born and reared (no, not like Rock Hudson) in Eugene, was a bartender for a while and hung out with Novelist (and acid head) Ken Kesey's cousin. Mention my name at your own risk! We all grew up drinking Blitz-Weinhard (Oregons only Brewery ... now long gone). It had a piquant flavor with a heady hop aroma and tasted like Rat P*ss (or so I am told). God, it was like drinking Schmidt Beer in the Army. Horrible hangovers and a good case of the "flying Australian sh*t's were the norm.
The food in the Jail also sucked and you had to eat it with a spoon... sporks were decades from being thought up (probably by another drunk).
I just hope Dennis and Carol Murray don't shoot My Acura for giving Fred their phone number..................... ORB, out............................
-
I kinda knew Dennis phone number. He has sponsered me almost from day one. If I had to buy a pipe, at screaming retail, I would still run a Murray Sidewinder. They are the best pipe around. You have to call Dennis, I dont think he ever checks his email. Old school all the way.

Mike sent me a copy of his presentation.
He seems to have covered conditions very well.
In fact some new information was included.
Getting closer.
See You soon.

Just got to the Shilo Inn. Going to get something to eat and then crash.
Tomorrow I'll be ready for sightseeing, visiting, fun and festivities!
Gregg
-
Mike, Check your PM's and give me a call.
Gregg
-
Welcome Gregg.
Get some rest and I'll see U Friday.
The shuttle driver will take You to a car rental place if U need a car.
Just ask. It's nearby.
I think You will be the long distance traveler.
FREUD
-
Thanks Freud,
Rested and looking forward to tomorrow.
I do have a CRAP rental car (unlike your Bonneville Chrysler Cordoba from years past) and have been doing some exploration of this area. Talked with Stainless, ORB and met 4-Barrel Mike. Going to ORB's tomorrow,
Also, in addition to the cost of the hotel and car rental, I ordered a racing torque converter from A-1 Performance Trans and Converters for my truck so this trip is getting to be $$$$ and I ain't done yet.....LOL!
C'ya tomorrow night,
Gregg
-
Doc.
Have a great reunion... I am there in spirit.
Bill R.

Photos, I'm not going to be there, I need photos.

Don, you know Mike doesn't allow photos... might scare the women and children  Oh wait.... I'm thinking One Run...

Too many things to do to post the video. Besides it hasn't even been downloaded but it will be.
Mike has had a recent back surgery and I just about hung him out to dry too long before he
was given a tall chair. He discussed the surrounding salt basins around B'ville, the two sites in
South America, and the gypsum runway in New Mexico that was built as a back up site for the
shuttle and Australia.
He is sending Rocky to South America before long to scope out Salar De Uyuni in Bolivia.
The Red Bull F1 team ran there a while back but their purpose was not a LSR. This site
has a distinct possibility. Salinas Grande, Argentina, has 100 miles of salt that is 10 feet thick
but it also has constant wind that is above the FIM limit for records. It's elevation, 11,000 feet, is
a challenge for aging crews.
White Sands, New Mexico has around 7 miles of gypsum runway that could be used, B U T, as always
there is a but involved. It has had no maintenance for a long time. It's not long enough for
400+ MPH records and who wants to clean the car after running on wet gypsum. It is available.
If you just have to run Mike says Australia is our best bet. He plans to run there in 2017 if
Bonneville is not useable. Treit and Davenport are also considering Australia in 2017. Shipping,
vehicle availability and the support of the Aussies are all pluses.
In Mike's opinion patience is the proper behavior related to Bonneville. The two adjacent unused
salt flats next to Bonneville just won't happen. Access, I know you can just look right over there and
see it, and the documents required to run a Speed Week type of event are not achievable. I know,
he wants to run as much as anyone but when he turning away from those two sites should convince us
that it's not going to occur. Andy Green wanted to run there but they also decided against it.
When one has to deal with Mutha Nature and the BLM you are playing against a marked deck.
So run the pavement sites that are available, wait for Bonneville or go to Australia are his recommendations.
Soon I'll post the almost hour long video that I shot.
Again, Patience folks.
One Run Bob expressed it in his refined attitude, "Patience HELL, I wanna race."
-
Not just American teams will be digesting this information. Of course many will be waiting to hear Mike's voice and the manner in which he described the options. With the Bloodhound SSC 'lock' on Hakskeen Pan until after they run their 1000 mph bid, any new information from an experienced project leader is vital to planning. Thanks Freud and Mike A.
-
I can honestly said I had a GREAT time. Good visits with Mike and Bob.....Guys, please don't sell anything!
Also met/talked with many from here on lr.com.....some I knew, some I didn't.
Freud, I'm so glad I decided to do this. MANY, MANY THANKS to you for putting this on.....again!
I'm already thinking about it for next year!!!!!
Gregg

Frued: Thank-you for yet another great event. It is good to get together with the like minded Bonneville Racing fanatics. Had a Great time and even learned a few things. Hope to see everyone on the Salt this year. Lets get those race vehicles Ready. Thanks again Frued.

staying in the bar too long, talking gear head crap, and having to walk 4 miles home from the airport, totally worth it. :D
I had taken maxx over there, knowing I was going to the bar, didn't want to drive. Lots of great info... now to go get myself some gm door lock linear servos.

Those two scruffy looking fellas with caps on gabbing to each other look really suspect. I especially am disturbed by the one leaning on the pillar with the envelope. Thank Goodness there aren`t any wires or strange chemicals coming out of there. The fella in the red sweatshirt looks a bit alarmed. Oh Boy! :-D

Paul, from what I saw last weekend all the guys were kinda scruffy looking.....LOL!
REALLY good meeting and talking with you!
If you have free time tomorrow, Bob and Mike are meeting me at the World of Speed museum in Wilsonville.
Would REALLY love to have you join us.

Who may those fine gentlemen be?. Looks like Bo and a guy from the Land of the Great White Cloud but I could be mistaken.
Tell me if I'm wrong!. :-D
-
Bo is the guy in the plaid Neil-Young-style ?Pendleton? front-and-center in the second pic, NOT one of the two ragamuffins in the pic that KP referred to. Gregg was appropriately dressed in a new Columbia-brand (Portland local) pullover.
Mike (ragamuffin #2) :-D

OK, I get it Gregg and 4 barrel Mike???

Mike, you got 1/2 of that right. It's Kiwi Paul on the left and 4-barrel Mike on the right.
I, once again, managed to escape the eye of the camera! :-D
Gregg

Hey Greg....you still in town? If so, I have a diversion for you tomorrow, maybe.....Call me in the A.M..

Paul.....Sorry, but I'm leaving this morning at 6:00 AM. Thanks for thinking of me anyway.
I can say that I had such a good time out here this year that I might need to do it again next!

Thanks, I sure missed being there.

I missed You being there also but I certainly missed
your wife and daughter. I always hope that the ladies
attend. The more they understand about the group

Thanks for your support.

Should be OK, I think they are still pumping any way. [If they still are doing that].

your post related to any recent topic.
Rattle my chains if I have overlooked the obvious.

note to all: Marlo's email has apparently been hacked so don't respond to emails from Him. And if He actually is in the Phillipines with no wallet or money, go ahead and send Him all You got... or better yet send it to me..... Bob
-
Sorry, Freud, I was on the wrong line. I was replying about the rainstorm. [Speedweek 2016]. My bad.
Doug
-
ORB I also got a fake? email. I sent it to the Dr.
-
Marlo was hacked.
He hasn't had time to get to the Philippines after returning from Muroc.
His account will not accept any e-mail for a while.
So just stand by.
It's a function of our marvelous technology.
One Run will handle any money that You want to send even after You have been advised not to.
FREUD

Freud, any updates on Les Davenport's scouting mission? Bob
-
I haven't talked to Les but I imagine
he was sobbing when he returned.
He said the Target 550 car could
have raced on that surface without any
preparation.
He just didn't take it with him.
Marlo is back on the internet after several
days of wrestling with AOL. I imagine he
is a bit cranked over that experience but
now he has had the chance to speak with
someone in a foreign country. His "slight"
hearing impairment didn't help.
FREUD

Is there going to be a NW reunion in 2017?

No Bonneville NW Reunion for 2017.
Sorta Sorry, Sorta Relieved.
FREUD

Well doc, that gives us something to look forward to next year.
