Title: Motorcycle Glove Question
Post by: BasementBorn on June 10, 2015, 12:17:24 PM
The specs for motorcycle gloves have changed this year. The new rule reads:

"Leather gloves that cover the entire hand and fingers with a minimum 2-inch gauntlet cuff and wrist enclosure are mandatory. Additional safety features such as knuckle, palm and/or finger protection with engineered materials are acceptable."

The part that I am confused on is the 2-inch gauntlet cuff and wrist enclosure. I have never heard the term gauntlet cuff. From a quick google search it looks like it means the gloves extend a minimum of 2 inches beyond the wrist but I am not sure. The gloves I have from previous seasons do extend beyond my wrist 2"-3". They don't have a Velcro strap in the cuff but they do have elastic built in to them so they fit tightly around the wrist. Just want to make sure I get new gloves before Speed Week if I need them.

I'd have to go and check last years rulebook but if I remember correctly, the change had to do with the "additional engineered material" and not the gauntlet issue.  :-D

It could be, I didn't check back with my previous rule book If that's the case I am probably good because they passed in 2013. All I was looking at was the whole section was bolded as if it was all changed. Just wanted to make sure.

My '13 rulebook says this about gloves:

"leather gloves are required.  No perforated or skeleton gloves are permitted."  That's all it says - but remember it's from two years ago.  Sec.7.C.4, page 115 if you want to see for yourself.

Yes, the rules have been changed to include the gauntlet cuff.  I think it's a good change.  Without a cuff that can be cinched up, gloves can come off easily if you're sliding.

Full gauntlet all leather gloves with reinforcements for abrasion areas and without perforations for breathing are not that easy to find. I can find one or the other but not both together. Any suggestions on suppliers?

I'm not sure if they're still making them, but mine will pass the new rules.  They were custom made by Z Custom Leathers - quite a few years back.  The cost was about the same as any brand name gloves - but sized to fit me perfectly.  www.zcustom.com

There seems to be a lot of really high quality gloves on the market but most have perfs in them for ventilation which makes them illegal for SCTA use. Custom made/order may be the best way to go. Thanks for the info.

As far as I read it the rule book does not mention perforations?

That's true. Maybe we are reading a little to far in to it because of the perforation restriction on suits? Might be worth shooting an email off to verify that one. I'll do that now just to get some clarification and let you all know.

I think I will probably see about picking up some new gloves just to make sure I am covered since mine don't have any way to cinch the cuff. Thanks for the help everyone.

mine are nit cinched , cut that off as the velcro kept coming undone and flapping ,
i thought the cuff was just to give extra protection in case the leathers rode up your arm if you took a slide

Mine now don't have the cinch but do have the cuff. They were fine before but it's that "wrist enclosure" part in the revised rule that has me wondering.

From Matt Shuss on the perforation question.

"We allow limited perforations in gloves.
What we don't allow are the car driving type skeleton gloves"

The "limited" part always kind of bugs me because it seem pretty subjective depending on who is looking at it when but good to know that perforations are allowed.

Edit: Also, I asked as a follow up, they do need to have a cinch strap along with the gauntlet cuff.

After my up-close tour of the salt at the last BMST race, I am going to say that a wrist strap should be required. I had my glove cinch straps  on tight and my glove did not come off, but just think of the damage if it had come off. I don't know if my hand hit something sharp on the salt or if the fricton tore it all up, but I got a long deep gash on my hand as well as a bad burn on my wrist. My next gloves are going to have a long cuff.

NHRA requires gloves with kevlar in the palms for their faster classes. All the ones I can find look like they would hold up really well and don't seem too expensive.

I wear Harley Davidson fxrg gloves here in the UK , no perforations ,decent length cuff with a cinch strap, full leather with knuckle protection - not exactly cheap but neither is new skin for your hands ! (and I don`t just wear them on a Sunday ride lol- used every day in glorious Scottish weather )

Hey Slim, maybe we need a member from the SCTA on safety as a member here?.
There may already be but i think the personal touch is better than the rule book in this case.
Just my 2C.

An update on this. The new gloves I purchased didn't pass tech because they had small vents on the knuckles. Turned out the ones I had originally purchased passed just fine. Worry for nothing I guess, glad I brought both pairs.
