I am getting ready to order a new video camera. My last one was a GoPro, but that was a couple of years ago. Currently, I am looking at a Sony Action Cam. It has on-board GPS, and can show speed.

They also have one that has a live feed.

I am wanting something that has that on-board GPS speed option. So, what do you have???

Race Camera - App for an iPhone. Has video and sound overlaid with time, elapsed time, speed, top speed, direction, elapsed distance, G-forces experienced in 3 axis. Plus it tracks the entire run in a data file for graphing with Excel, has "Dash Cam" mode with continuous recording.
Sony Action cam: $299.00
Race Camera: $4.99

Stay tuned for more features coming in March.

I do not have a smart phone...
-
How's that possible if you're under 80 years old? My grandma has an iPhone.
-
Company phone. And the only non smart phone in the company at that!!! Trust me, it is not my choice.
-
We've used contour. they are about 4" long 1.25" in dia. HD quality easy to use.

Just got the Sony HDR-AS100VR has a wristband live view remote to check view angle with remote control and live feed, better image stabilization and sound. My Go-Pro got legs and ran off. Looking to replace it with the silver Go-Pro when salesman thought the Sony was better.
Also bought the roll bar mount.

In my opinion it's not the camera that's important; it's where you are starting in the line up and whether to track is dry or wet. If your starting on the the front row it's your choice especially if you think you can hold them off. Wet track always face it backward cause if someone gets in front of you I guarenttee it will mud up....good luck

JD -- we're talking Bonneville.
Good luck this year at Perris -- maybe I'll see you there.

Don't you use a shaker screen on your in car camera?
-
As mentioned above, I have also used Contour for five years with favorable results. I can say the audio on others seems to be better if mounted out in the wind but despite being dropped on the salt and cycled a hundred times it always works. They went out of business so I scooped up a couple more (heard they were coming back) and the styles of mounts works on either helmets or frame/forks.
The off shore knockoffs are plentiful with names like GearPro (direct ripoff of GoPro) and under $50 bucks with decent quality reported.
Youtube has lots of brand comparisons for pic quality.

huh???
what's a "shaker screen"?
In answer to this threads 1st Q:
TFA has 2 vid cameras which i bought with our Racepak logging system.
we were just learning how to use them in 2014, so we have no advice.
In 2015 we'll learn how to the data synchronized with the vid.
Hopefully the next vids will show mph, distance down track?, rpm?, wheelspin?

Contour with GPS. Contour allows for remote mic. Moving to Replay next been talking to reps and seen new units. Also very good cameras. Mounting is ABSOLUTELY the key. Make it solid and in the center of Yaw/pitch if you can. In short ANYTHING but GoPro..= crappy audio and flimsy mount with the aero of a brick.
-
I mounted my GoPro in the headlight bucket with a remote cable to a button in the car.

For me as just a vivid consumers of racing vids, the videos from cameras mounted in the cockpit is way more interesting as the driver and view through the front screen is putting the viewer really where the action is.
-
In my case, the camera would be used on a motor bike. So, mounting might be a pain. I have never really been a fan of helmet mounting. But, choices are limited.
-
For a viewer, high on the chest is the best of the choices. That way the rider action can be seen and jolts are cushioned somewhat. On the helmet the pic gets too irrational and on the bike the view is shaky and often restricted, or the only thing you see is the road ahead. That is often boring in the long run..

I like the Replay XD Prime X. It is very compact with very high quality and Android app viewing and running if you lile.
We have been using it with work on Sam Wheeler's project and it is awesome!
-great mounting systems available
-wifi viewing
-wifi setting
-awesome quality
-compact, well built.
and the company is Bonneville nuts and supporters.
Of course the GO PRO is good, but too big for in cockpit usage.

Lately, the safety inspectors have looked carefully at the mounting methods used for on-board video cameras. They will want to make sure that the camera won't fly off during a run. (This causes the whole track to shut down while they search for the missing camera. Major pain in the butt.) At some events, they put an approval sticker on it if it is attached securely. You need a sticker on every camera, or they will make you take it off in the staging lane. :-(
So before you buy a camera, you need to figure a way to mount it securely, like with a nut and bolt through the base. They won't go for the standard sticky tape method. Maybe a lanyard will work, but check first.
If you don't have video, it never happened. :-)

I have a Replay XD 1080 Mini, which I tried to use last weekend at Wilmington without success. I'm 99% sure, however, that it was my fault and not the camera's. Between forgetting to hit "record" in the staging lanes and hitting "record" incorrectly, I don't think I got anything. But I can't be sure, because the camera's drivers wouldn't load onto my PC when I plugged it in. :x I'll either give it another shot at Loring, or borrow my wife's Go Pro. Not trying to bad-mouth the Replay at all--everyone else (with a brain) seems to like it...
