g'day Drew, Halloween just around the corner :-o, its here already :-)

started on my performance enhancing plans immediatly after the 13BUB event,,

the green Kawasaki ZX12R has had a dyno tune that (i hope :|) will be more favourable to altitude,, had the new Bridgestone BT-OO3 rear tyre fitted yesterday and am working on gearing calculations at the moment,, by late this afternoon she will sit ready for our Aussie Speedweek which i will be using as a test and tune, then, everything will be packed into a box and BMST15 bound,

"Scary/Spooky Fast!!"  :?, just "Fast"

seeya mate,,,,

Great News on the Bike!!
I have an Australian friend, and each time he phones the conversation always starts with...
"G'day Drew, I'm calling from the future", which always makes me feel good to know
someone is contacting me from tomorrow. HA!

Thanks for posting your contacts.............I get the feeling that the CLASSIC category of bikes at BMST is going to GROW :-D

Not much actual work so far..............but acquired several more sizes of jets for my M-CG 750 and dyno times are scheduled in January. We plan to see you in IMPOUND

hoping to bring something very different than our normal pushrod twin next year.  Will probably enter it in FIM for the first time as well

Yes, Drew, my husband is finally back on schedule after 2.5 months playing catch-up with farm chores and mishaps (HAD to replace the garage door opener, yesterday), you should have heard him griping about how one job turns into six jobs, "when will I ever get to THE bike?" (as we have many MC's "THE" means SALT BIKE rather, 1972, R5 Yamaha), since he put in a new LED shop light.  Now, having already removed all external salt, he can look into the inner hiding places (carburetors, etc.).  I am looking forward to next year!  Hope we get the whole week in with out weather issues.  See you on the salt!   'Great Granny' Sandy,  Vetter Velocity.

We're havin fun now .......

13.2 hours on the drivetrain ......

About 60% throttle you have 15 # of boost and you can almost see smoke in the rear view mirrors...

First freeway ride. 65 miles North on the 405 and the 5 .....4th gear for a few minutes ....

FREEDOM is great, that and a shot of Adrenaline .....

Support you loco 5-Ball Racing Team ......

Ray,
You're really quite the optimist looking forward to the year "2105".  :-D
In another 91 years there will probably be a hovercraft class.
Until then we will get our excitement from blown 4 cycle internal combustion.  :-D

In 2014 I made my first 2 runs on the salt to get the open 1350 P-PS record.  When I got home I found #3 cylinder was scored pretty bad.  When I pulled the cylinder, #3 piston was smeared and the second ring stuck in the piston groove.  #1 also had the second ring suck but no scoring / smearing.  I think the cast pistons did not like the 45 seconds on WOT boost, the top ring had actually pushed the ring land below it down to pinch the second ring.  Back together with a clean up hone and some old stock pistons.  Put some drag race gearing on it for some fun on the street before the snow hits.  I will wait for January to start on 2015 plans.

Ralph;

What was your piston ring end gap?

Pretty sure your record is in 1350 P-PB.  No such class as P-PS.

End gap was .026" to .030 "  with new uncut rings in worn and honed out bores.   And yes the class was 1350 P-PB

Bikes can be set up to run blown motors reliably with forged pistons of the correct alloy with proper ring end gaps and skirt to cylinder clearances.

Not in AMA Production Engine classes if the bike was manufactured with cast pistons.

RP, I am not familiar with AMA rules.  I was once then I forgot them when I stopped racing under AMA classifications.  A previous post mentions 45 seconds of WOT boost.  Boost means blower or nitrous?  That is too long of a time to use standard pistons.  Racing pistons and proper setup are very important.

Boost means a turbo, I ran a 1015cc 1978 Kawasaki Z1R TC.  At home at the top of 3rd gear the boost was set for only 4 pounds, but as a rookie on the salt I was too focused on watching where I was going to see what the boost gauge read going though the speed traps.

Do you have a picture showing the undersides of the piston crowns?

What are we looking for on the undersides?

The brown is from oxidized oil.  The oxidation is from heat.  Comparing the color between the pistons will tell you if a cylinder is running hot.  Darker deposits indicate more heat.

The oxidation around the corners like seen is not uncommon for cast pistons.  Heat is concentrated there.  Is the ring land failure on the outside in the same place where there is dark color on the inside?

The ring lands are pinched on the centerline of the intake valve notch where it is not so dark.  First I need to work on jetting, and maybe take a couple more degrees of timing out of it, and it might live.

you are correct. Pinched ring lands is a sign of detonation.  Definately need to take out a few degrees of timing.

The lack of cylinder wall to piston seizure marks at the corners, combined with the not very brown of black undersides, says heat might not be the problem.

Funny,I thought in Production class anything goes internally just exterior needs to appear stock and same bore/stroke.

How could the AMA reasonably enforce their rules unless they do like Fireman says?
