Post by: gkabbt on September 24, 2014, 07:22:37 AM
This is the usual place holder for pics from Wilmington this weekend.

I'll be driving up to Wilmington tomorrow and I'll be taking pics Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will post the links in this thread.

Also, anyone who has pics, please feel free to post here!
To ALL racers : Be Safe, Have Fun and Go Fast!

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL weather here today for tech inspection. Low 80's, no clouds and plenty of sunshine.
Very good turnout for this meet! I don't know what the final entry count is but it has to be close to full of 150!
Talked with many old friends and met quite a few new ones.....Always a good time for me.

Here is my Google+ link of today's bikes and cars:

Ahhh . . . the Suede-a-baker has arrived.

Tell Chuck about Bonneville - I'm beginning to think he's never heard of the place!

Yeah, I know - the expense - but for the money he spends dragging that thing from Loring to Wilmington, he might just as well throw his hat into the ring AT LEAST ONCE!

Mike

I'm so ashamed - I saw the car at World of Wheels in West Allis, Wisconsin last February, pitted next to Burton in 2013, and didn't recognize it.

I can tell you more about cars being built in New Zealand than I can folks right up the road . . .

Yup - Kent block with a custom head.

Shame on me . . .

Guess I never saw it with the engine cover off.

No worries, Chris.  At Speedweek he had a "stock-appearing" Kent motor (complete with finned aluminum "Capri" valve cover) in the car ("for licensing") but took the time to show Drury & me his special engine.

Again, absolutely BEAUTIFUL weather here today. Mid 80's, really COOL looking wispy clouds and plenty of sunshine.
Surprising news at the drivers meeting this morning. Donna and Joe Timney are retiring from the ECTA and Brian Lohnes (announcer here and 1/2 owner of Bangshift.com) and his wife Carrie (I think that's right) are assuming their positions!
I wish all four happiness in their new adventures!

As for racing today.....Spectacular!

Here is my Google+ link of today's bikes and cars from the staging lanes, starting and finish lines:

Spent most of the day helping overhaul the trans-axle on Burton's liner so picture count is down! Pinion bearing had melted at B'ville!  Should be running in the morning!

Lots of records today - tail wind for 95% of the day!

True on the records and I forgot to mention the tailwind in my post.
I swear I think this is probably the 2nd time I can ever remember a tailwind here!

REALLY good seeing and talking with John again. Last time I saw and talked to him was at Loring in 2012!
Then, it was fun telling him about Randy Dupree when he owned the car and running at Maxton!

Weather started off mostly cloudy but was pretty clear by noon and temps went to the low to mid 80's.
Unfortunately, we lost our tailwind from yesterday so some folks did slow down.

As for racing today.....quite a number of racers left yesterday or earlier this morning.
As the day progressed, the staging lines got thinner and folks started lapping!

If my feeble mind remembers correctly:
Dave Marcis had fastest speed for cars at 218 and change!
Don Haas had fastest speed for bikes at 240 and change!

As you would expect with cooler weather, MANY records were set for both bikes and cars this weekend!
VERY GOOD MEET!

As I was leaving, I heard Brian announce the winners of the Super Street Bike Shootout but I did not write all the names down. My last pic shows the bike numbers so I'll put names with the numbers and post.

Here is my Google+ link from today of the staging lanes, starting and finish lines:

Looking at the pics I posted this weekend, I once again want to single out the Gary's Speed Shop team.
As I have posted before, these guys show what LSR is all about.....Be Safe, Go Fast and Have fun!
It was good to see that Lloyd (forgot last name) and Gary Hart got their 200+ runs and I think green hats!

This was Lloyd at the finish line on his 200+ run:

And, if I remember correctly, this was Gary in prestage getting ready for his 200+ run.

I don't know exactly how many runs he made (A BUNCH) but all were in the 203 - 206 range!!!!!
VERY IMPRESSIVE.....Good job guys!!!!

I can honestly say that this car hauls A$$ from the 1/2 mile on!  :-o

Chris, sorry for the lack of details - just quick shots this round - busy crewing. I am certain they set a record for the world's tallest roll bar!  :-D The Olympic committee may even be interested in it for high jump and long jump events!  And the new record for the bug-eye long/high jump is ............... :-o

Greg it was great to finally put a face to the name your pictures and live feed add greatly to the overall event.  We had a great time once again in Wilmington added two more MPH to the flathead record it now stands at 172.546. While I was working on my car in the pits I heard that little Crosley working hard coming to the line Gerald pushed her to 121 MPH dam fast for sure.
Thanks to everyone involved putting another great ECTA event in the books. To Joe and Donna I know your going to enjoy retirement you deserve it. Welcome to the new ECTA partners Kerri and Brian Lohnes there youth will add fresh ideas to this great organization.

IIRC that Bugeye Sprite ran in H/GMS and was in the 110 range. The rollbar was definitely hideous.

On the drive home from Wilmington I thought of the steam powered motorcycle.
Don't know the owners name but this bike ran 80 mph and is now the fastest steam powered motorcycle ever!

These track shots are the only ones I have. I thought I had some of it in the pits but I cannot find them.

COOL bike but it's REALLY weird to see a bike that has a sound like a train!  :-D

Story I'd like to share.

Many ECTA and Bonneville folks remember the names Courtney and Villa Hizer. As I understand, over the years, their cars set numerous records at both ECTA and Bonneville events and Courtney was in the 200 MPH clubs for both organizations.

After Courtney's passing in 2011, the team wanted to carry on the Hizer racing tradition and so the #80 Hizer Racing Spirit '59 Berkley was built for the Modified Sports class. Unfortunately, the car had some teething issues at Bonneville in 2012 and several things had to be changed. They regrouped, came back in 2013 and on crappy salt, Paul Powell set the B/BGMS record at 250.563 with a best speed of 278+ and a Red Hat to boot!

For 2014 the team decided on an engine change to a slower class and Villa would drive the car.....something she had never done before. They came to Wilmington in July to let Villa get some seat time before SpeedWeek. They had engine and transmission issues but did make a few slow passes. Engine and trans issues were resolved back at the shop and the car was readied for SpeedWeek.....Strike one! Decided that the car would run at World Finals.....Strike two! They came back to Wilmington and Bingo! Villa was finally able to make several passes with the best being 128+. Several small items need to be changed over the Winter and the Hizer Racing Spirit team will be back in Wilmington next year before heading out to Bonneville.

Pics from this past weekend:

I have gotten to know the team over the past few months as Paul only lives 10 miles from me. I spent quite a few hours at his place helping them get ready for SpeedWeek, World Finals and Wilmington.

Sorry to ramble on but I think it's a REALLY COOL story!

Gregg,  Nice pict of me in the "Angry Italian" the 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo 5spd, totally stock, no tweaking and pump 93 gas.  Our best time was 122.8837 for the record in H/PS.  We had a blast and will be back in May I want to get to 125.  Drove it out from New Jersey, its my daily driver.

Besides that getting to chat with fellow Wisconsinite Stock Car racer Dave Marcus nothing can quite compare. Dave is one of a kind. I plan on putting some hours in to try to beat the Daves "Fast car" of the event in May  He had fast time....again. Good Job Dave.

Dave was at the last Maxton event.  Very cool that he's found a second career make it tough on us youngsters!

As far as Woody being a contributing factor to stormy weather, you'd be hard pressed to think of someone you'd rather have around when the clouds really opened up.

Burton - are you planning on "World of Wheels" again in West Allis?  I'm thinking of bringing the Midget to the show.

I don't know about anyone else but Dave nearly gave me a heart attack Saturday afternoon.
He came through on this very clean and fast pass.....then

his chute did not open until just before short shutdown so he really had his work cutout for him to get it stopped.
He turned into long shutdown hot and the rear end slid out causing him to loop and go in the grass.
Fire and rescue rolled and luckily all they had to do way pull him out!

Dave and car were OK and he came back later to set the top speed of the meet for cars at 218!

Dave, if you see this and as a favor to everyone.....please don't do this again...LOL!  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

No worries, I talked to Dave in the staging lanes after that run and he intentionally spun the car so he didnt run off nose first and tear it up. Pretty fast thinking I would say. And keep the foot on the throttlle a little so you dont flat spot the rear tires. I have to keep that one in the memory bank if the new Datsun appears with the E engine next year. You do what you gotta do.  :-D

That was a inside Joke with Woody and his Wife. It seems there is a cloud that follows me around on occasion. ITs just a perseverance test I believe.

As far as the World of Wheels I am debating about it. The Milwaukee or Chicago ones are of interest trying to land a sponsor,,,,,
