Do you guys have a lube you recommend for a Hurst Shifter? I run at El Mirage a lot and it seems conventional lube would attract dirt. Currently I am soaking it in advance of running with a spray can of WD40. My son has suggested motorcycle chain lube. Any ideas? Thanks!

I don't see anyone making enough passes at Elmo in a weekend to create enough gunk to make the transmission tough to shift or difficult to clean. In most cases, I'd bet the transmission would go before the shifter.
But if it worries you, I think just a ritual of a can of brake cleaner followed by a couple shots of spray lithium for a garage door track would be all you really need. Do it every weekend you run. Loosen the boot, put a tray under the car, grab the brake cleaner, spray, spray, spray, then spray it with the lithium, put the boot back.

LPS Force 842 dry moly lube. Amazing stuff. Meant for areas with dust and dirt. Used on aircraft landing gear, hinges etc.............

Speaking of shifter levers getting hung up -- when I got home from WoS/Top Speed Challenge, driving a rental car from home and back -- I drove the little car to work the next morning. That afternoon was when I had to return the car, so a few hours before the deadline I went out to shop-vac the insides and hose off the outside. I got in, started the engine, but the shift lever was frozen in place. A look under the car showed massive deposits of some white crystalised stuff. I wonder where that came from? Eventually I got the stuff to let go - by trying and trying to shift without bending anything.
Under the rear was ugly, and under the hood -- well, you needed to see it to believe it (unless you've already been driving through the salt and water day after day after day. Will I go back - in my own truck? Of course I will.

I run a Hurst shifter on the T-10 in our street roadster. I remove it, clean it thoroughly and lube it minimally with grease in the off season. It lasts a whole season at El Mirage but we clean the car top and bottom with soapy water and a spray nozzle after every meet.

A quick fix for any shifter is to clean it with brake or carb spray clean from the top and let it drip into a pan. Blow out with air to dry. Then use spray Pam to lub, it works great. Mike

I lube Hurst shifters in a garbage can and replace with a Long shifter

The dry film lubes will work better were dusty dirt is involved.
Pam, Oh no, Some one said "PAM", I had a friend once that recommended spraying "PAM" on my bike to help get the salt off after Bonneville.
Well maybe it helped get the salt off, maybe not?, but it took months to get the "PAM" off. There is literally no know cleaner that will get that crap off, nothing! It drys to a sticky black goop that will never come off without scrapping half the paint off.
I still have that same friend, but now he knows better than mention "PAM" and racing in the same conversation. :?

What a bunch of sicko's, a conversation about shifter lube degrades into a Jungle Pam slobberfest. :?
On second thought, the are related topics, huh? :-D

Yeah! What does Jungle Pam have to do with shifters?

What's a shifter have to do with a one-speed dragster?
-
Just because she tells you its a one speed Stan, doesnt mean there isn't more, perhaps you need to work on your shifter, shifting technique ...

When Linda was doing the Hurst thing, most T/F car were running 2 speed transmissions. I guess I just showed my age :?
In the mid 70's we even tried a 3 speed. That didn't work out to good, but we tried it. Now we know better.
