Title: Internet Audio feed for WoS?
Post by: SteveM on September 03, 2014, 12:43:33 PM
I have had some friends/family/coworkers ask me if there was a way to follow the WoS action online.

Will there be a live internet feed to follow?

Steve.

Slim and Gregg are on the case.

Steve, Chris is correct.....there will be streaming from WoS and the Shootout.
Jon has the equipment and he is bringing it out to Bonneville with him.
He is not scheduled to get into Wendover until late Friday so we will not set it up until Saturday morning.

We'll keep everyone posted on the streaming activities.

See you on the salt,
Gregg

Excellent news.  I'll tell my friends/family/coworkers to be on the lookout for updates.

Thank you very much Gregg and Jon!

Steve.

Here's a bit of detail.  I'm in a crack whore motel in South Dakota tonight - and will letcha know what's what about the streaming audio before I go out for supper.

I've got the hardware for doing the streaming from Wendover.  I plan on doing that stuff for both World of Speed and the Shootout.  At WoS I'll put their AM 1610 radio station on the air (at least that's what frequency Monte said it'd be) and I've got a CB with me so I can try to feed that audio into the stream.  Gregg, you might be corralled into helping me figure out how to get it working.  I've got everything - save maybe a wire.  I even brought a spare 12V deep-cycle batter to power the CB.  And completing the odd stuff I loaded -- in my rental Chevy I've got a Honda generator to power the streaming stuff and the battery charger to keep the big battery full.

I'll remind you that WoS's audio might not be what the folks at home are used to hearing when they listen to an event, in that I won't be doing continuous play by play.  It'll be their announcer (who may be Ron Christensen on AM and Glen Barrett on the CB) that doesn the talking, and there'll likely be long pauses when there's nothing going on.  Sorry - that's all I can figure out for now.

Gregg, how many microphones are in the kit?  I did get the long skinny box with the mike stand (I think that's what it is), but does that have one or two or how many mikes?  I didn't find a spare one at the house, so maybe we won't have an ambience mike.

Now a few words about the Shootout and the audio.  It's been arranged that Bill Guzenski - the track announcer at El Mirage - will be there to add his voice to the stream from the Shootout.  Being from the EM part of the world he'll know the racers just about as well as anyone, so we oughta be able to give out with some good information.  There is no track announcer/radio station at the Shootout, but we'll try to fill in some of the long pauses (which, at the Shootout, are sometimes an hour or four long) with interviews by Bill as he meanders around the pits.

That's enough for now.  My tummy's starting to think my throat's been cut.

Slim, let me know what you need by 5:00 PM Thursday - Central time, please - and I'll corral it so we're not short on kit.

Chris:  I'll dig around tomorrow morning before I hit the road.  It's beddy-bye time here in Mitchell, SD, and I don't think the neighbors in the motel want to see me get out of bed and drag my skinny hiney out to the car, unload most everything looking for bits and pieces, and so on.

I expect a spare microphone's a good idea.  I'll check tomorrow to see what we've got.  Thanks for the offer.

I've got the funky Radio Shack POS mic - that's "Pitch Over Shoulder" - which won't work with the kit, but I'll return to you to do with as you see fit.

I'm grabbing a set of headphones, and SM58 with a cable, and I'll put together an OHSHIT kit of cables and other such truck.

You mentioned an AM transmission you are rebroadcasting.

I suppose an AM antenna might be helpful . . . I don't think you've got one.

A M ?   :| You sure 'bout that?

Guys, sorry for not getting back sooner. Been a long travel day and we're now getting ready to crash in here in Las Vegas.

Jon, the only microphone you have from me if the one in the long skinny box. I left the ambience mic at Chris' as I didn't think I would need it.
After the June meet we decided that we wanted to do a mic and that is the one in the box.
No problem on help from me getting all this setup.

Chris, if they are broadcasting on AM I guess we would need an antenna.

TTFN and we will be in Wendover tomorrow afternoon.

I'm not too worried about an "AM antenna".  A hunk of wire will work just fine, and I don't think we'll have too much hassle finding one of them.  As for a mike/mic -- we don't need it, just thought it might be worth another try, that's all.  Don't sweat if you don't have anything that's worth the bother to pack.

As for if the station will be AM or FM (that's "American Music" vs. "Finnish Music", you know) -- over the years the SCTA broadcast on 1610 AM at Bville and 89.7 or so at EM.  It's just the last few years that they've used the FM stuff at Bonneville.  I think I remember that USFRA used FM most recently.  Monte's the one that's responsible for telling me that they'll be on 1610 this year -- but maybe he's wrong.  After all, he is tall.  We'll find out in a couple of days.

The light bulb just went off in my head.

Wow, Jon - interesting perspective.  I hadn't looked at it in those terms.

For all these years, I thought it was because our wives were shorter than us . . .

And Kate actually had the brass to tell me it was because I was a GUY . . .

Of course, I don't dare jump to the conclusion that I might have been right about something . . . or anything . . .

About a hotspot on the salt, check with the Head Handlebar Holder, Jon.
He and Nancy have been using an aircard to post stuff here for a number of years while driving down the road.
You could put your pics on a thumb drive, give it to Jon and then he could do the upload.

He should be rolling into Wendover tomorrow afternoon.

Gregg
Title: Re: Internet Audio feed for WoS?
Post by: Seldom Seen Slim on September 04, 2014, 11:21:46 PM
No, I won't have the aircard that we use -- because I left it at home so Nancy and I can do some sexting chatting while I'm away for the events.  I have one via my iPhone, though, and we'll be using one for the streaming audio.  But I haven't tried the audio one - don't know if it could handle regular traffic while streaming, so I won't offer it 'til I know better.

My phone is kinda limited in how many Mb it'll handle without the bill going way up -- but hey, maybe I can get away with it.  Stop by if you can find me, Freud.

I'll check that, Neil, onceI'm back out there.  I headed to town to ask Mike Crawford if the Daypass had arrived - and he told me that the PO doesn't do street delivery in Wendover.  So I scampered the the post office and the nice lady there handed me the package.  So now all I've got to do is get back to the salt and disconnect my phone and install the
Daypass for the wifi connection we need.  Soon, soon.  And yes, there'll probably be an interruption in service when we do the changeover.  Bear with us, please.

I'm in the motel -- and the wi-fi here is so crappy that it won't hook up.  so I'm using the Motel 6 wi-fi -- right next door - but the signal is weak enough that the data rate must be very slow.  Sorta like pushing a small rope through an even smaller straw.  But at least I've got some connection.

I saw Milw. Midget Chris in line at the fuel truck a while ago.  He's got Nick, his crew, with him -- and Fordboy, too.  I finally got to meet him.  Finally.

Over to you.

It's about 10 'til 6 and we've got to shut down the audio stream.  The meet is winding down -- staging lanes have been closed since 5 and the cars still in line will get to run.  Sorry about having to shut it off early - we'll try to do better tomorrow night.  It's sorta my fault, as usual.  The computer for streaming made it here with me.  But - I forgot to pack the keyboard and monitor.  We've been running on Greg's laptop all day and he's got to go find Linda in town.  I expect I'll be borrowing the hardware I need for tomorrow, but in the meantime - thanks, Greg.

I'm going to go visit with Ellen to see if there's a way for me to get the results from today.  I'll letcha know.

See you in the morning.  I think racing begins, with return runs, around 8 tomorrow.

Hi again, girls and boys.  The steam car saga goes a bit like this.

This morning the car left the line and was building speed just fine.  He was running on a 145 record and turned in a 144 last mile.  He pulled the chute -- and that's approximately when he went into a flat spin.  No, I don't know if he spun and threw the laundry or the chute came out and tugged him around.  The wind was not very high at all.

So - he spun and then the car flipped over and landed on the top.  It took quite a while to not just get the driver to the ambulance and off the salt, but also to clean up the bits and pieces.  Longer than usual, I mean.  Maybe the boiler exploded when he went topsy-turvy?  I don't know anything about that -- only that the course was on hold for quite a while.

One of the riders with the Fred Vance group went down on her bike.  She was riding one of Ryan Ostergard's Busas and for some reason got off at some speed.  I talked with Fred afterwards and he knew nothing at that point - and I still don't know any details.  The rider was named Jennifer (I think he said that), and it was NOT Brenda Sue.  She was with the rest of the crew when I heard from Fred about what was going on.

I think I'll copy this to the WoS results topic, too.

We have put it back together -- you ought to be able to hear it now.  We still can't make it work right on my laptop - but the Turbinator is going to make a run soon and we wanted you to be able to hear that.

That "cannot load. . ." msg means that we aren't putting anything into the system.  We've tried four or five times and haven't made it work yet -- Apple vs. Microsoft - so we're back to Gregg's 'puter.  I checked and can hear the stream now -- at least it's working.

I'm now going to see if tech support works on Sunday at Meridix so they can maybe walk me through getting it to hook up here.  Sure hope we can do it -- so we don't bring this streaming event to an end tonight.

I'm sorry about the farkled audio late this afternoon.  We tried to use this Macbook -- and had to get the software from Meridix, which we did.  But the laptop wouldn't switch to using the external mike input no matter what we tried (and I tried lots of stuff).  So we ended up having just the built-in microphone picking up the ambient sounds in the radio trailer.

There's hope for tomorrow, though.  We've located a young fella with a fine Windows-type 'puter and he'll be there at the trailer in the morning to hook it up.  Things worked okay with Gregg's laptop, right?  They oughta be just as good with this lad's machine and I'll have all day to figure out what I can do differently so I can use the Apple.

In the meantime -- thanks for all of the comments - even the cranky ones.  They helped me target what I needed to work on - and they tell me that people are listening.  Tune in again tomorrow morning.

Jon, my comment wasn't cranky.  :-D It was merely an observation.  By the way, I've been out in the shop all day doing the initial installation of the AEM Infinity Engine management system. I did have a chance to listen to Chris's runs and I walked into the house just as Danny made his 390 pass. Anyway, thanx fo' da feed.  Wayno

Speaking of Danny Thompson's pass this afternoon -- I wonder how much faster he would have gone if he hadn't had a bit of an incident.  According to what I heard at the table tonight he could barely see out as he was nearing the 5 mile.  And that makes what I heard earlier in the day when I was in the radio trailer with Ron Christensen.  Some of Danny's crew stopped by to ask if there was anyone in the pits that had three (3) 10-pound fire extinguisher bottles for the Thompson car.

Sounds to me like the system triggered for some reason and made enough fog or mist or steam or something so his vision/visibility was compromised.

Well, that WAS a shakedown run, right?  Yeah -- 390++ on a shakedown run.

And I so wish you could have been out there to hear it.  When he left the push truck and got into the throttle -- it was a true shivers-down-my-back sound experience.  That sound alone made the event great for me.

I guess I'll have to post this here, too.  I put it on the regular WoS topic a little while ago.

The streaming isn't running right now.  That's partly because the young lad whose machine we're going to use isn't here, and partly because nothing is happening yet.

I think I see the vehicles at the start of the long course, so maybe return runs will start up.  It sounds like the course is set up and ready and stewards are in place.  But Ron's not here to do the broadcasting, so until all of these things come together - stay tuned.

By the way, Connie and I should see you folks out there Friday. I Hope.

Interesting hassle here:  The audio coming out of the mixer is not getting into the line input of either computer.  We had it for a while - but it was going through the audio goofy card in the 'puter - made a Donal Duck effect.  Got rid of that -- no more audio coming out of the wire now.  Working on it.

Did the 550 liner run already?
Thanks, Jim

I am frickin' stumped.  I get Only the Donald Duck (which the computer that's running calls "Screaming Bee"), but yet most of you are hearing it clean enough to understand -- no DD effects.  WTF???

I don't have much more gain to increase -- afraid to push it into distortion.  Levels look okay at the mixer output.  Remember that much of the audio is getting inputted to the system via Ron's microphone and that's why it isn't really clear, but that's the way it's available.  Think of it as if you were sitting here listening live to AM 1610.

I'm going to sit and watch it for a while and read your comments -- then head to town and get some other hardware.  I've shut off the ambient mike -- let's see if it helps.  Keep listening-- keep sending comments.  We'll get this running yet.  I think. . .

The sound I'm getting is like playing a 33 rpm record at 45 and that gives me the chipmunks talking and everybody is running a motorcycle engine.

Jon, not complaining just trying to describe what I'm hearing.

It's not any better now than it was before -- so we've shut off for a while and will try to regroup and start over with the Apple.  It makes for lousy audio quality -- but at least it sounds like real speech, not helium-induced squeaky-talk.

It appears that something changed/is different today as opposed to yesterday on your machine.
Please make sure you don't make any changes to your MacBook!  :-D
