Title: World of Speed 2014
Post by: USFRAMONTE on August 11, 2014, 06:36:01 PM
Just wanted to let all of you know that the USFRA officials will be watching salt conditions very closely. We have some people who will
be going out this weekend to check conditions and then again on the 23rd of this month and at that point will do some preliminary
dragging to see what happens.
We will do what we can to accomodate as many as we can and still give everyone a chance to get the needed runs in. We will be
looking at many possible solutions. Stay tuned here and on saltflats.com for the latest official information.

Monte, are there unlimited entries , or is there a limit on the number if entries you will accept?

Monte, There is a post on FB by Tommy Whiteman that tech is on the 4th, racing starts on the 5th. Have the dates changed? Is Whiteman a part of the USFRA? Thanks.

Buddy, that is one of the things we are looking at, we do not have the equipment nor manpower to run 4 courses.  Two looks to be
doable. So there is a possibility of a short course and and combo course.
Will keep you updated as things progress.

Roger, our chief inspectors name is Chuck Whiteman, not sure who Tommy is. Extending the meet an additional day is also one of the
thigs we have discussed.  No official word yet but that is a distinct possibility. Wish I could say more but we are still trying to sort
out all the possibilities.

Thanks Monte. Tommy Whiteman just responded to a note I sent that the website is being updated. If you are a Facebooker, go to World of Speed 2014. I certainly like the idea but need to let my crew know to change the travel arrangements if it is going to happen. I am sure you guys are going to have a surge of entries as a result of Speedweek being cancelled. You have my support for an expanded meet. Really appreciate the USFRA giving it some consideration, I am sure it is not an easy decision.

If USFRA deals with the same BLM as does Speed Week, there

may be some decisions that are out of their control. Lets

give them some time and when they know they will be happy

to tell us. This is one time that we can't be very demanding.

I joined the "World of Speed 2014" FB page.  Firming up the start date will be extremely important from my point of view.

I can manage additions to the end of WOS pretty easily on the fly, but if the start date is moved to an earlier date, I'll need to make bigger modifications to the overall plan (vacation for myself and crew), departure date and time, etc.

I'm 100% in favor of using FB to post updates, as long as I'm confident that I'm looking at "Official" USFRA information being posted there.

Thanks,

Steve.

We are aware that many of you need to make plans and adjust your schedules. We have time reserved with the BLM prior to the
scheduled race days but nothing after. If we expand the racing days it will only be possible to do so by starting on Friday the 5th.
We have the equipment to run a long/short combo course as well as expanding the 130/150 course into a standard short course.
As difficult as it is to hold off making the changes, we feel strongly that we need to inspect the salt this Saturday before making
the decisions. We trust that you understand we want to do this in the best way possible for the racers and the USFRA.

Jim Burkdoll and Gary Wilkinson will be leaving SLC in the am tomorrow and will call us as soon as they have a chance to check the tracks and pit area. They will also send photos that we can post on.  We have scheduled a USFRA officers meeting for Sunday at six pm to make some of the more time sensitive decisions. Stay tuned on Saltflats.com, the USFRA facebook page and here on landracing for the latest updates and information.

Just got off the phone with Gary Wilkinson.  There is still lots of standing water at lands end. Course #1 is still very wet and the normal pit area has standing water.  However, course #2 is looking
very usable as is course #3.  He sent along some photos which I will post later.
As of now it looks like we will be using course #2  as the combo, long/short course, and #3 as the short/130/150 course.
Have some phone calls to make but will put up photos soon.

At our meeting tonight is was decided that the number of racing days will stay the same.  We will be running two tracks so
we are confident that we can accommodate the racers and make sure there will be enough runs for everyone.  The official
schedule is listed on our website, saltflats.com.  I still plan on posting photos if I can get 30 minutes to sit at the computer.
Title: Re: World of Speed 2014
Post by: USFRAMONTE on August 18, 2014, 12:23:32 PM
I should make mention that we are accepting additional entries for the World of Speed. Virtually every year the last day and a half
of the meet I sit at the starting line waiting for someone to come up and make a run.  Our thinking is that with two tracks and four
days full of racing we can get everyone the runs they need.  As a reminder we are still doing the feature vehicles, which this year are belly tank lakesters. Anyone that brings one either to race or just for display will receive special recognition and grouped together parking in the pit area.
I apologize for not posting photos of the salt conditions yet. I need to resize them in order to post. I will get to that task tonight.
Several of us are going to the flats this weekend to do preliminary track prep and equipment checks. I can post more info using my
phone when I get there. Sign up now for all the fun!

World of Speed version 2014 is a go!  There was rain on the salt last night but no harm done to the race courses.
During our inspection today it was decided that we will indeed use course number 2 as our main track using it
as a combo long/short course.  Number 3 will be used as a short course along with the 130/150 club.  This will
put the starting lines a longer distance from each other than normal but it is the best option at this time.  Where
to locate the pits will have to be a game time decision.
As you can see, there is still a lake at lands end.

These two were taken at the zero start on course 2. The first one is looking down track towards floating island.
For the second one I just turned 180° and pointed towards the access road.
You will notice the pits for the motorcycle meet, they are doing tech inspections today.

Course 3 is similar in condition to course 2.

Speaking of WoS 2014 -- this will be your reminder that I'll be on the salt with a (too big) inventory of 2014 Salt Talks shirts.  We've run kind of low of some sizes, so if you're going to want a shirt or two it wouldn't hurt to let us know so we can be sure to have enough of the correct size to fil your order.

There are the shirts with the photo collage of Ray the Rat on the back - a true collector's edition to honor Ray.  Buy one for your collection and one to wear - unless you want more than one to wear.

And speaking of Salt Talks - I'm not sure if I'll try to stage the picnic that didn't happen at SpeedWeek.  Nancy won't be with me this time around so I'd have to do the whole danged thing by myself.  Yes, volunteers are very much helpful, but there's also the background work - buying the groceries, lugging the big grill from the Enola Gay food stand to the Museum parking lot - and back, and so on.  I won't be dragging our trailer out to the salt this time, so there goes the way of transporting the tables and that big stuff.

If there's a massive groundswell of interest I can be talked into it, but -- speak now or forever hold your piece ().  In the meantime -- order some shirts and plan to buy even more when I'm out there.

I'm planning on streaming the audio from WoS in a few weeks.  Chris, Gregg and I will set it up so all you have to do is click into a link we'll provide, and there'll be that link on not only the Forum but also the home page - so those that aren't Forum regulars can find it easily.  Streaming isn't free t the website, so please consider sending some $$ to help defray the cost of providing the sound of Glen's voice at your home computer.  Thanks.

Monte, are those miscreants ensconced in the truck to get out of the sun or for additional weight as you drag the course?  On a normal race day Hugh is most visible at the end of the access road and Gary is a blur of action as he solves every problem along the course.

Wes, that is an apt description for the two of them.  We met at the truck stop just off I-80, those in attendance were me, Jim B.,
Gary W., Ellen W. and Hugh C.  Too many to fit in the cab of the U-haul so we drew straws and those two came up on the short end.
Everyone wanted to keep their personal vehicles clean and not take them out through the water.

I added the text in color and renamed the photo and still got this:

"Sorry! There is already an attachment with the same filename as the one you tried to upload. Please rename the file and try again."

This is ridiculous-- it was posted in another topic 3 years ago!

The camp site at the Museum is a safer option-- it has gravel and isn't a mudhole when it rains like the campsite at The Bend In The Road..

Neil, I'm sorry to report that the software for the Forum is about the best we can find for the purpose.  And the memory is such that something from three years ago is just in another folder -- but easy to find and check.  It can be a pain in the butt -- no questions.  But Bob and I have looked a couple of times and can't find a forum program that'd let us do everything else that this one does -- so we've gotta stick with it.

You're right about the Museum parking lot.  Camping on the outside of the bend, some part way up the hill, is fine, too.  For instance if you want to enjoy looking at the skies - there'll be less light pollution if you're on the hill.  As for whether Mike'll let you camp there -- I dunno.  I expect so but it probably won't hurt to stop at the Carquest store and ask him.

Caveat Emptor!

Last night at the meeting we discussed different options for laying out the main track.  We have been very concerned that track 2
is pointed towards the dike on the north east of the salt. That only leaves about 2 miles beyond the 5 for someone to get stopped
before running into a possibly horrible situation.  We will be looking at making a new course that will start in roughly the same
location but then head straight toward floating mountain, that would leave more miles of safe run out area and be safely away from the
dike. We have surveyors scheduled to come out and we will do what ever is needed to make a certified and safe course.  The placement of the pits may end up being completely out of the norm. We will draw up a map much like we did for the test n tune and post a copy on the web site and here.
I did hear back from Mike Crawford and he says that camping at the museum site will be not only allowed but encouraged.

Just finished up a phone call with Ron Main. He is on the salt as I write this and called to say the surface is drying quickly. Says he is
amazed at the difference between yesterday and today in the condition of the salt. He was very upbeat about it all.

Agreed Wester!  Ellen does a great job and puts in serious time and effort to help it all keep flowing.  I absolutely love being a part of the USFRA.  The meetings are enjoyable and the people are top notch!  Can't wait to hit the salt with everyone next week!

For those experienced with WOS, a question:  If a rookie were planning to run a car in the 130 class, which days would be the best to show up?  Beginning of the meet, end of the meet, doesn't matter?  I read on the forum that Monday afternoon and Tuesday things start to slow down, so maybe that is the best time to show on say Saturday, tech late that day or Sunday morning and then have Monday/Tuesday to run?

i would recommend  as soon as it
suits your situation to be ready, no guarantees,  its possible to get to race a day or two, and none after
only way to capitalize on such unpredictable scenario (with next 130-150 club 360 day wait) is to be as ready as
possible early as possible ...

I will be there Friday for inspection and hope to be racing right after the drivers meeting, I would recommend that to you.

I agree.

Rain can cancel a meet.

An accident can slow up a meet.

Wind can stop a meet dead in its tracks.

And if a meet has a lot of attrition, two things can happen - Either you're lapping, or they close up shop early.

Make hay while the sun shines.

Further, there are times when they'll stop running the 130/150 vehicles a day or two before the event ends - for whatever the reason.  sooner the better, okay?

Let's hope the weather holds out for World Of Speed. We will be licensing Barc Goodson in the Bockscar Lakester my father. I can't wait to see him go fast. He has driven everything from Funny Cars and Front Engine Dragsters for Kenz and Leslie's to dirt modifies and builds beautiful hot rods. It has been along time since being in the driver seat but I believe it will be like he has never been out of the seat when he steps on the throttle. At age of 74 he will finally get his chance to race on the salt. He went to Bonneville with his father in the 50's and again in the 70's with the Peek Bro. roadster. Then came back in 2010 to work on the Bockscar and watch me go fast. 2011 at Speedweek he watch me break the record and join the 200mph club and couldn't of done it with his encouragement and support. I heard from the guys that there was a tear in his eye when I broke the record, I think I made him very proud that day. I thank my father for teaching me about cars, racing and teaching me about life. He will be able to check this off his bucket list and fulfill one of his dreams to race on the salt.  I hope I get to hand him his RED HAT and be a part of the 200MPH club with me. Now it's my turn to encourage and support him for what ever happens on the salt I am proud of my Dad.  Also want to thank Stainless and John Boy for everything they have done for me and my father on the Salt and there friendship.
LET'S GO RACING!

Special?... like short bus special maybe.... Our team members all get an opportunity to drive sooner or later.  Barc has worked to keep us doing everything the same every time... He is a good wrench and works pretty hard for an old guy.
The motor we put together for Barc failed to survive its second dyno experience after our first session data showed we were running out of injector.  So he will drive our biggest motor ever.... The Knecum 1... no stranger to Bonneville, the motor has already put someone in the club on a bike.  Our fingers are crossed.

Arrived on the salt at 10:45 this morning.  Started dragging and was able to get some done on both courses.  We will be using the international course as our long track and course 2 as our short track.  There is still a significant amount of water at lands end.
I have included some photos.  The first was taken at lands end.  The second shows the international course at about the 4 mile
looking back towards the start line.  The third was taken on course 2 at the three mile looking back to the starting line.

Rolling out of STL on Thursday morning, and should arrive in Wendover Friday evening.

Leaving the trailer and race truck there saved me big $$$$ in fuel for the towing vehicle.

Towing out there for SpeedWeek, the truck got 12.6 mpg.  On the way back, without the trailer, we got 22.8 mpg for the 1,500+ mile trip. (2013 Ram 2500 diesel).

Fred and Chris,

Here is Jon's post from 08/24 in regards to a Salt Talks at WoS:

Speaking of WoS 2014 -- this will be your reminder that I'll be on the salt with a (too big) inventory of 2014 Salt Talks shirts.  We've run kind of low of some sizes, so if you're going to want a shirt or two it wouldn't hurt to let us know so we can be sure to have enough of the correct size to fill your order.

As for me, I'm all in for a Salt Talks gathering this weekend!

See you guys on the salt!

Gregg

Well,  another productive day of work on the salt.  I received a phone call this morning reminding me that the international course is scheduled to be used for Cook's Shootout, which is right after WOS.  My bad.  Anyway, moved to the west and started dragging a new track parallel to the international.  Both tracks looking good.  Also got the pit area smoothed out.  I will take more  photos tomorrow and post them when I get back to the motel.  It has dried significantly since yesterday. It was beautiful blue skies  and lots of sun the past two days.  Things are looking good.

To the question of Salt Talks at WoS:

I don't know for sure.  My truck is still in the shop -- so I'm driving a kinda small Chevy Cruze and don't have room for lots of the stuff that I'd take to Salt Talks.  I don't have much in the way of vision through the inside mirror -- that's how full it is packed.  I've got a few things, like raffle tickets and the Salt Talks t-shirts, but just plain don't have room for everything.  Let's keep the ad hoc idea alive and maybe as we travel we can come up with a way to do some Salt Talks activity.

Sorry to sound negative on the entire ST idea - but there just ain't room in the car.  See you on the Salt.  Should arrive there Friday mid- to late afternoon. :-D

Salt Talks '14 is an if --= if you ask me.  I've got a few of the things we'd need -- but didn't pack anything like the food basics -- condiments, plastic forks, spatulas and pans to hold the meat and the rutabaga greens, etc.  I've got a few gifts for a raffle and did bring the tickets for said raffle -- but that's about it.  If youse guys want to pitch in and help I sure betcha we can do in, but please make your intentions be known to me - preferably in person once we're all there - so I can give you some information like when to show up for your assigned duty.  I'll be hanging around the streaming audio, I guess.  I'm driving a Chevy Cruze - black car, Minnesota plates - and don't have the well-known SSS trailer to serve as a landmark.  But donchu worry - I'll be there.  See you on the salt.

The courses have been surveyed. We now have the dragging done on the long course, the short course is about 2/3rd's done.
The water is receding at lands end but it is not going to be a pretty sight when everyone starts driving through there.  I included
a photo taken at 8:00 am this morning to compare with the one I posted Monday night.  The second photo was taken on the long
course at the 4 mile looking back toward the starting line. The third photo is also on the long course, it was taken at the 7 mile
looking toward floating mountain.  You can see how brown it looks now, it will whiten up a bit as it continues to dry.  I was able
to drag to the 7 1/2 mile but chickened out and turned around.  If I ever get the drag truck stuck in the mud, I would never hear
the end of it.  It is quite smooth beyond there but don't know exactly how far you could go without getting stuck.
I feel that we will have two good courses to run on and hope to see everyone soon.  Drive safely!

Whew, a long day today.  Got to the end of the access road this morning and had quite the shock.  The wind had blown hard all night and lands end had more water than on Monday.  The good new is:  no tracks were harmed during the excessive movement of air molecules.  However,  the access to the pits is the PITS!
WOS looks like it will all come together.  Thanks to all the volunteers that have put in so much work. Looking forward to Saturday when we can start racing.

One more brick in the wall.  Yep -- I'm out here and therefore my wall is much more complete than it's been for the past few days as I drove pretty incessantly from the UP of Michigan to Wendover.

I'm heading out to Carquest and the salt now.  I've got the camera and will try to get some good photos to show you how the salt is - and I'll post them for your conflaguration, okay?  And then you wonder about the live streaming, don't you?  That's why I'm visiting Mike at Carquest -- because I had some of the hardware shipped to his store.  I sure hope it's there and waiting for me.

Later - -

Noel, if you look at your "location" you'll see that Jon has filled it in for you seeing as you didn't fill it in yourself. I'd suggest you go back into your profile and adjust it to your location on the great Canadian prairie.

Good to see your participation. Unfortunately you'll probably find that you're hooked for life. Have fun, go fast and be safe.

Well, Peter Jack, sir -- you've gone and spoiled my fun for the day a few days back.  Noel -- my way of teasing new folks (and sometimes the old timers here, too) that they didn't completely fill in their Profile page when registering - is to assign locations to those who didn't pick their own.  You can see what that means in your case, hey?

I'll look for you in the pits over the next few days.  I'm sort of easy to find -- tall guy, hair going grey, wearing jeans shorts and a race t-shirt.  Keep your eyes open.  Welcome to the Forum - and good luck in the fun.  Red Neon, hey?  What class or which of the 130 or 150 will you be running?

I do apologize for that Slim, sir. I thought your fun was just in coming up with the place names and posting them.

I was just trying to help a fellow countryman. With any luck he won't see it while he's on the salt so you may have a few days to chuckle anyway.   :-D

The long course is done for the day now -- and I'm about to shut off the stream - and yes, I know the 130/150 folks have a few more to run.  I need to get this thing shut down so I can try to fix the audio issues for tomorrow.  Thanks for listening, girls and boys.

I don't have much time to post -- going to dinner with the USFRA workers -- thanks to the Wendover City (Mike Crawford) for putting on a feed for all of us.

I expect I'll get the run logs again from Ellen, but since she'll be at the same dinner as me -- you might not see them 'til morning.  And I promise to remember to post both courses right away in the morning.

We hope to have better audio tomorrow.  And by the way -- as I went past impound tonight it was pretty danged empty, so return runs might be over quickly in the morning.  I'll give you what I find as soon as possible.

Note to all:  Crass begging letter from me will be posted later.  Right now I'm going to dinner.

Hello all
I was rebuilding the Lambky liner Vincent engines and gearbox in 2012. I would like to hear what the team achieved this year. Did they make any successful runs? What speeds? Cant find any data on the net. It would be nice if someone could fill me in - Thanks!

Best regards Hartmut

Heather West stopped out here and said that she's got the record certs. ist from yesterday posted on the USFRA Facebook page.  Go take a look.  For that matter -- copy it to here.  This laptop is about as busy as I dare get it right now.

It's 5PM here and the staging lanes are now closed for the day.  Runs will continue 'til 6PM.

Harmut,

They had a problem shifting and broke a chain... They suspected a solenoid issue,  Previous years ok but I heard he had some wiring redone in that area so they were looking at that... Next pass not sure no speeds given so not sure if they made it to the measured mile.

Thats all I heard

Max is in Impound with a 167.
Noel made the 150 club with a 154 and is headed to Denver for some road race action this weekend.

One more day to bump my record, but nothing can compare with the new friends I made at this meet.
Tip of the hat to Max, the Midget, Danny Thompson, Valerie, Noel, and so many others....

World of Speed 2014 is in the history books now, and I'm writing this note to thank the many of you that took the time to send a donation to landracing.com to help pay some of the costs of sending along what information I could gather and transmit.  I'll try to send individual thank you emails, but until then -- thank you for hanging in there while I got the audio streaming sorted out, and for watching all of the posts that I and others made during the event.  Your help makes it all fun as well as possible.

I'm not sure yet if I'll hang around for the Lucas event that may or may not happen later this week.  It's still up in the air as to whether there'll even be an event, and if there is -- is it worth the hassle and costs of staying out here to send the information down the wire.  I'll find out more today and let you know what I've learned.

In the meantime, thanks again for your help and interest.  It's a blast being able to do this for us all.

Just talked to Mike Cook don’t know where Slim got his information but the event is absolutely on. Course markers are in place porta potty’s setup. Right now 5 ½ good hard miles to the clocks and Mike thinks he will be able to provide a 6 mile run up. With 3 miles to stop. It’s called the Mike Cook Shootout Test and Tune. Lucas may come up with some money if then it will be the Lucas Mile. We are on our way there.

Mike, i got the information from Cook himself -- but I guess it was a few hours earlier then when you did.  When I was out there there wasn't an event title like you've reported.

I saw two truckloads of porta-potties headed past the truckstop as I was leaving - but didn't follow to see where they went.

Will there be any certifying bodies out there?  FIA/FIM/SCTA/USAC/AMA?  I didn't hear anything other than Dave Petrali was probably already headed out -- don't know if FIM Charlie will be there.  Nothing was mentioned about him.

This is from Mike's website:

Update 9/9/14

If you’re having difficulty reaching Mike Cook about attending the test and tune session you can call PR Director John Baechtel @ 951 824-0625. I will be posting updates frequently and will try to help accommodate your needs and questions.

Tuesday 9/9/14:  10 am

Attention: Cook Shootout Postponed to the pre-planned rain date of October 5-10.

Test and tune will be run on the shorter course during the scheduled period from  9 /12-16

The Cook team conducted an extensive evaluation of salt conditions early this morning and determine that they cannot guarantee a long enough course to conduct the high speed shootout on time. The first mile is fair, 2nd mile is bad, 3 to the 9 is good, 10 questionable and 11, 12 are bad. The weather is holding but the track is poor at the 2 and no good at the far end.

Because so much of the track is good in the middle Cook has decided to throw the current date open as a test & tune for racers who want to run without FIA timing on the shorter course that is still useable.  Anyone who wants to run needs to call Mike Cook’s cell phone  immediately at 951 675-3070. We’re taking a limited amount of cars at this point and some of the fast cars are staying on for testing. Among those already requesting to run are Poteet & Main Speed Demon, Ack Attack, the Mariani streamliner, Allan Johnson’s Studebaker, RJ Gottleib’s Big Red Camaro and others. The test and tune fee is a flat $2500 for a 5-mile course with terminal speed timing. If you still want to come we need t know ASAP.

There will be no FIM/FIA records as it is a one way run only with a 5 1/2 to 6 mile run before the timing lights we should see some impressive speeds which really don't count for anything but will give an indication of what the machines are capable of when we get a good 2 way course.

Just a quick note to catch everyone up to date. We finished the racing on Tuesday afternoon about 2:30. We started the clean up
process right away. Picking up cones, course markers, pulling down inspection tents, packing the registration, timing and sales trailers
and getting them hauled to the end of the pavement, and rolling up all the wire...(that is where the problem popped up). We use a Briggs & Stratton gas engine to spin the spools and wind up the wire. The engine crapped out and by the time they got the problem solved and the wire picked up it was 11:00 pm Tuesday night. Everyone was too tired to keep going so it was decided to finish putting everything away in the storage units on Wednesday. Myself and several others had to be back to work on Wednesday so we packed our vehicles and headed for home.  I got to bed at 2:00 am Wednesday morning. Gary, Ellen, Reed and Dennis, (hope I didn't leave anyone out) worked all day Wednesday to get everything put back in their respective resting places until next year. Gary and Ellen will be coming back to Salt Lake sometime today.
That is why we have been delayed getting the final run data posted. As soon as we can catch up on our sleep, we will get the info up on the website and here.
Thanks to all that showed up to participate. It was a great event, not without some problems, but great nonetheless. I will post some
more info as I get time.

The whole experience at World of Speed was incredible.

I would like to thank everyone individually, but I'm afraid I might leave someone out.  For that reason, I'll throw out a big THANK YOU to EVERYONE who made this event possible, and for everyone who showed support for our team.

I was truly blown away by the positive response we got from so many people for our little green Rampage.

Thanks again,
