Better than GoPro and FREE!
Don’t spend $300 for a GoPro that only records video, or $1000s for a camera that also captures data and video.
If you have an iPhone, you have the ability to capture your racing runs on video PLUS capture data about your run.
Race Camera is an iPhone app built for land speed racing that records wide-angle High Definition video, and the following data:
• Speed (in MPH KPH, KTs)
• Altitude (in feet, meters)
• Direction (magnetic North)
• Elapsed time
• Current time
• Distance (miles, Kilometers, Nautical miles)
• Fore/Aft G-Forces
• Vertical G-Forces (negative and positive)
• Lateral G-Forces
• Latitude
• Longitude
Just mount your iPhone to your vehicle or body (many mounts are available for the iPhone) and when you are ready to go, start recording. Race Camera will record your run and later you can analyze the data.
- How fast was I going at the 2 mile?
- Did I slow down during the entire run or keep accelerating?
- How was my track? Was I veering left or right?
- What, when, and where was my top speed (it may not have been at the finish line)
You can use Microsoft Excel or other software to graph all these parameters so that the data is easily interpreted.

I would like a code for the #672 H/DT entry.
I will use it at SpeedWeek to record my effort to up the record in that class.
I will send the video ASAP - perhaps even from the Hotel at SpeedWeek if I can get good Wi-Fi service.
(I may have to fab up a duct tape and zip-tie mount for my Iphone 4, however).

That graph was when I was testing the app this past week. It was on a flight from Anchorage to Kodiak in a Dash-8 and the graph starts right on takeoff.
Thanks to those who have responded. I hope you can use the app to your benefit.
I am sending a private message to each responder with the Promo Code.
Here is how to redeem the promo code and install the app on your iPhone:
1. Launch the "App Store" on the iPhone.
2. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the first page where you will see a "Redeem" button
3. If you are not signed into the App Store you will have to enter your password to get in.
4. Click the "You can enter the code manually" link
5. Enter the code I sent to your private message.
6. If the code is correct, the app will automatically install.
The first thing to do is to set up Race Camera. Click the Settings button and you can enter the following;
- Team Name
- Speed and distance display as Miles, Knots, or Kilometers
- What to display - Altitude, Heading, time, distance acceleration
- If you want the camera to automatically switch from the front camera to the rear camera at certain intervals. If you use this feature it will show the front view out the windshield, and what is behind the camera such as the driver.
When the app asks permission to use location services, click Yes. That is the GPS function.

The instructions for using Race Camera are sparse because it is a new app. The image below shows how to get the data file. When you click the box with the arrow coming out of it, it will generate an email that has the data file attached. Just enter your own email address and it will be delivered to you as a .csv file which most software like Excel can import automatically. The clock button just brings up a window with the data displayed.

Don, cool deal... put it on my phone, took a test ride, I have not been able to find the saved file on my phone, but I also emailed it. Any idea where it goes, I gave it permission to access Photos, just cant find it

The video could have been lost if the app was switched to another app while recording.
To successfully capture video and data:
1. Start the app and make sure the settings are what you want as far as what data is to be recorded (The settings button).
2. When ready, click the green record button.
3 When you want to stop the recording and save the video, click the red stop recording button There will be a message that says "Saving Video" (warning - the video will not be saved if the app is switched to another one before the stop button is pressed.
4. The Videos screen is where all the recorded videos are stored. If you want them to appear in your camera roll of the iPhone memory (so you can view, upload, etc) click the video you want to view and a summary will be displayed. Here you can delete the video, preview it, or SAVE it to the camera roll. There will be a message that asks if you want to delete the video from the videos screen. Do this if you are done with the video and only want it view it from the camera roll. Once the video is deleted from the videos screen, the data file is gone too.
Just experiment taking short videos of anything and using the system.

I'm always hip on trying new technology and new things! 2568 is my race # and it's a TO motorcycle or a H/DT truck. We are running both this year. iPhone 5. Not sure if it was 25 yet or not so figured I would just put it up if there is still a slot!

Ditto on the Android version. My Droid Maxx has built-in GPS, three axis accelerometer, three axis rate gyro, magnetometer, light sensor, & pressure sensor-- as well as a still & video camera & cell phone. It is an amazing device; to read & record those sensor data, I use an app called "Sensor Kinetics Pro". Now, if it could record video with this data superimposed... perfect!

Dear Don,
This is very educational and would fit with our integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) into our Eco Car and Manufacturing Program at Granite Falls High School. Now our cars are built for fuel efficiency and not for speed, yet in 2011 we took our Urban Concept car with a longtail to World of Speed for aero and diesel fuel testing in an exceptional educational environment (see T-2011, what's behind the number somewhere else in this forum). For our 2014 race we built 2 new cars which will be modified and refined over the next 2-3 years. As part of that we are given the rare and unique opportunity to use the PACCAR Test Center's oval (and banked) test track in Burlington, WA for testing aero, acceleration and fuel consumption with our new Urban Car (on the right). This is where we would love to apply the documentation capabilities of this App. Please send us a code when available, thank you.

Although Speedweek caused a lot of racers to have no use for Race Camera, Jack Rogers was able to mount his iPhone on his car at both WOS and at Newfoundland and take a few videos using the app.

The car sounds pretty awesome..
Remember that Race Camera also records a data file of all data so you can graphically analyze your runs.

Of course! The app is good for any kind of action sport. auto/moto racing, skiing, cycling, skateboard, etc.
