Title: Mike Cook's Top Speed Shootout 2014 . . . radio coverage?
Post by: tallguy on July 29, 2014, 10:18:00 PM
I'm planning to be a spectator at the Shootout this year.

Is it likely that there will be radio coverage of the vehicles
(speeds, etc.) during the runs?  If so, what band and frequency
should I tune to?

Thank you in advance for any info on this, and good luck to
us all.  Hope it doesn't get rained out this year.

Last year the Cooks asked me to investigate having some kind of radio to broadcast.  Not so much as speeds and  vehicles, but for sure to be able to tell everyone -- spectators included, who probably don't have a CB with them, that a vehicle is about to run and the course is now locked down -- nobody move from where you are!!  I haven't found one at a reasonable cost - but still I search.  There are a number of problems in making such a system work - at an affordable cost.  I'm planning on giving audio streaming a try from the Shootout but remind you that not only will that do no good for the spectators on the salt -- but there's very little talking to send down the internet.  Stay tuned for further information.

Maybe Mike can get the chatty Kathys they had at SpeedWeek last year to talk endlessly about nothing to make sure there is no dead air.   :x

low power FM is limited to 200 feet.

Maybe a CD with "a little extra power!"

If you liked the Harold and Ron/chatty Kathy show last year -- I betcha you'll really enjoy the new, 2014 version -- Harold and someone else.  I guess that Ron won't be doing the radio anymore.

As for low power FM -- well, yes, Richard.;  The rules allow low power stations to have pretty small footprints and share frequencies and all of that.  but - what are rules, anyway?
