Post by: 2club on July 15, 2014, 08:05:23 PM
The 2014 Shootout Dates are September 12-16. Here is the link to the latest update of 2014 Shootout competitors. Racers listed here have returned their letter of intent and a deposit for their 2014 entry. There are currently eleven streamliners, three of them motorcycles and one electric, plus one sit-down bike and one snowmobile. We still have several slots available so check in soon if you want to race. Check our web site at landspeedevents.com, our facebook page and this thread regularly for updates. _John Baechtel

Disappointed not to see Richard Brown's Jet Reaction on the list.

Any Brit in the know care to comment on whether he might be running somewhere in 2014?

Thanks, Ivan. Seems like a combination of a technical issue and lack of adequate funding has caused a year's delay. Kind of normal for land speed record attempts.

Interesting list.  Should be a great event.  Sam Wheeler's PARTS UNLIMITED/EZ HOOK is not powered by a turbo Hayabusa.

Richard, I thought that Sam W. had forsaken the Kawi motors that he's used for a long time - - in exchange for a 'Busa engine.  Take a look at the build details (you'll find links on the home page of this site) and you'll be able to see what the engine is to go along with the new body and colors.

Correct. Sam has a turbo Busa built by Vance and Hines. The Vance is not related to me, darnit.

Vance & Hines; I was just reading a 1980 magazine article about them getting together to go into business together. That's already 34 years of very successful business!

My typo.....I was trying to say that IT IS POWERED BY A 1300CC HAYABUSA.  I type not instead of now.

I do know the difference as I saw the engine in pieces in Indy V&H race shop, and we shot video of Byron hines and Eddie Krawiec etc....  http://youtu.be/4q8IOtnvwA4

Maybe this sentence from the OP answers the question.

Why is Poteet and Main going for the big prize using such a small engine?

That little engine sure makes for a mighty fast car.

Why is Poteet and Main going for the big prize using such a small engine?

My thought is that the engine can make the power needed and is much easier to control bringing the power on over the run vs. a larger engine or one that doesn't have a turbo as the power adder.  Also a larger motor might mean more frontal area?

Running over 400 is all about acceleration not just speed.  At the drag strip they manage the traction over the entire run and these guys running over 400 have to do the same.  Overpower the track and you waste valuable time peddling the car.  I think George is pretty much WOT most of the run and the computer controlling the engine, waste gates and traction control keeps the car accelerating at about the fastest available rate.

Other cars have run and are running with probably more HP, but they can't use it all and have a harder time using what they have as effectively,

I think Rob with Carbinite is taking this to the next level with a lighter car and his variable aero traction via the rear wing.  It is going to take some time probably to get it all right but having the turbo and a lighter car that still has the potential for good traction has a lot going for it.  I'm not sure how sophisticated his computer control of the power delivery is at this point or if it is primarily his butt and right foot.  Speed Demon has the power delivery dialed in pretty darn good now.  I feel there next hurdle is going to be increasing the traction needed and possibly then needing more HP which might mean a larger motor,

Sum

As Sum sez, in layman terms too much hp and lost traction is wasted forward motion. You cannot get anywhere if you are not moving forward.

That little Dutweiler engine makes ~2500 Hp and has still room to grow, so there not short on power at all. There may come a time but for now it's all about traction and controlling it. They are pretty good at that right now but if they can get a coarse that would handle the power they have on tap now, speeds will climb pretty quickly.

The experience I have with bikes is it can be hard to get a nice controlled burn across a large piston.  Maybe the size motor they have is easier to tune.

The experience shows that Dutweiler doesnt suffer from tuning the combustion process across the  top of large pistons
